My dad played the Doors constantly while I was growing up, when I was thirteen I started reading Morrisson's poetry. Since my dad passed away on Father's Day of this year. I can't listen to their music without crying because it has too many memories of my father attached to it.

Add

The Lizard King: The Essential Jim Morrison by Jerry Hopkins to the list of Doors books in my possession. It's ok, covers a lot of familar ground, but has some awful, awful errors in it. Certain lyrics are atributed to the wrong songs and things and he gets a few dates wrong, like mentioning what Morrison did in 1989.....Other than that, it's pretty ok. It's spilt into two parts, a quick biography and then a collection of interviews Morrison gave....

His name is even Captain Obvious and STILL you...ah nevermind

For years I hated the Doors.? The organs sounded cheesy to me and i hated Morrison's vocals.? But I've accepted them and now own all the albums (Strange Days being my favorite).? The music is actually very good and involving but I'm still not sold on the vocals.? To call Morrison an American Poet is laughable.? His lyrics are simple and mundane and hardly anything i'd call poetry.? but despite all my grievences, yes, i am a big doors fan.

Soft Parade' is my fave album.

To say his lyrics are simple (as a whole) is an understatment - The words (& emotions) came from libraries (from real & from mind) to being > learned & relearned & put back together, in a way that most of you will never comprehend in your life time.

One of the greatest Philosopher's of our time.

ps. If anybody judges on Oliver Stone's movie......   yo' a fool

well...yeah, basically.  If it's straightforward and sounds like standard prose, that is not poetry.

Well, show me the way, To the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why, Oh, don't ask why
Show me the way, To the next whiskey bar
Oh, don't ask why, Oh, don't ask why
For if we don't find, The next whiskey bar
I tell you we must die, I tell you we must die
I tell you, I tell you, I tell you we must die
Oh, moon of Alabama, We now must say goodbye
We've lost our good old mama
And must have whiskey, oh, you now why

looked at you, You looked me
I smiled at you, You smiled at me
And we're on our way, No we can't turn back, babe
Yeah, we're on our way, And we can't turn back
'Cause it's too late, Too late, too late
Too late, too late
And we're on our way
No we can't turn back, babe
Yeah, we're on our way
And we can't turn back, yeah
C'mon, yeah!

seriously, to say that these lyrics have poetic value and to call him a philosopher is ridiculous.  I hate to break it to you, but these lyrics are extremelly shallow.  And i just chose these randomly, i could bring up many more pointless lyrics such as these if you wish.

jim released lots of poem-books, the american prayer tapes (wich the doors did music on afte his death) and have hours of tape of voice, the did celebration of the lizard live several times and jim is a well recognized poet by experts, universitys etc

like he said: I better be a word man, than a birdman ok

I really like crystalship, the end, people are strange, shamans blue...

I like these parts, it's just experts of some of his poems (edited)

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
The movie will begin in five moments,
The mindless voice announced,
All those unseated will await the next show.

We filed slowly, languidly into the hall.
The auditorium was vast and silent.
As we seated and darkened, the voice continued:

The program for this evening is not new,
You've seen this entertainment through and through.
You've seen your birth, your life and death,
You might recall all of the rest.
Did you have a good world when you died?
Enough to base a movie on?

*****************************************

So you know how pale & wanton thrillful
comes death on a strange hour
unannounced, unplanned for

like a scaring over-friendly guest you've
brought to bed

No more money, no more fancy dress

This other Kingdom seems by far the best

until its other jaw reveals incest

& loose obedience to a vegetable law

I will not go

Prefer a Feast of Friends

To the Giant Family

Well, I've allways known that there were a band called The Doors. But I haven't heard their music since couple of years back.

They have few good songs. Like L.A. Woman(I heard this song first from Billy Idol, and I didn't like it, so I had my suspicions for it...), Break On Through To Other Side, Riders On The Storm and finally Light My Fire.

I also knew that Jim Morrison was some kind of legend or something. Everybody has his poster where he would be with no shirt, You know... that famous picture. He was one those famous rockstars who died in the age 27....

I think The Doors was a one mans band, to the most of the public. But not for the die-hard fans, it wasn't.

Whisky Bar (Alabama Song) isn't a cover in the truest sense of the word. It's a section of a 1930's German opera, which the Doors reworked to make it into their own song.
