Bootlegging (recording and selling) is illegal period, unless given permission by the band.

I think the whole bootleg thing is basically illegal, but most bands don't seem to care unless somebody is making money of it.
If you download a show for free and then sell it, then you're definitely gonna make some people upset.

it's only illegal if the band cares.gn'r don't care so do what you gotta do.i know alot of people are gonna get pissed at me for saying that but shit i was selling gn'r for years on e-bay and not one notice or letter or anything.i sold to duff's wife n' buckethead and not 1 problem.now on the other hand once upon a time i was selling the mike tyson's fights on dvd and showtime contacted me and told me to stop or else.i honestly believe gn'r does not care 1 bit about the selling of thier shows.i never sold anything that they were selling so maybe that's all that counts.i guess what it comes down to is that if it's copyrighted then it would be illegal but the police won't just come after you because they have cars to pull over n' seatbelts to watch so they have to be pointed in the right direction n' if the band or record company doesn't point then...and yes trading and giving is still illegal because your still distributing copyrighted material,it's just the chances of anybody caring goes down a bit.i personally don't worry about things like that i leave that up to the gn'r police like limiluis.limilus was hired by the band to stop the selling so if he see's you selling your gonna get yelled at!!! watch out!!! sorry but he just kills me.he spends so much time to stop this n' it just won't go away.try stopping the coke dealers, well no that's probably legal in your country.another point is that the copyright laws are probably different in each country.seems like in japan it's legal to take a show and put it on a silver cd with a cover and label n' call it an original.i think that is complete bullshit that the "big traders" say that's ok because all it is is a coverup, hell i can make silver originals you can buy them online for about the same price.any show that was not released by the band is an illegal product, period.so don't say silver cd's (original,no sorry but it's not)are ok!!!!

You're making money of somebody else's work. It's really easy. First somebody needs to record the show (and risk getting kicked out and his/her equipment taken away), then somebody needs to put it on a DVD/CD/online so you can get it. Then you take that work, burn it on a disc and make a nice profit.
What's wrong with this picture?
Taper tapes the show for
free
He/she authors a DVD for
free
He/she puts it online to share with other fans for
free
You download the show for
free
and sell it on Ebay.

I think the main beef traders have with selling is that the original tapers invested money in their equipment, took the risk of bringing it into the venue and sometimes took the time to tweak the recording afterwards. And then they shared it, most of the time
for free, when they could have kept it for themselves
. Seeing other people making money off their back probably doesn't push them to share other recordings in the future, and it kills the whole thing.
Oh, and "official" bootleg companies like Aces High have no more right selling live recordings than the average Joe, IMO.

GNR doesn't care? I have to say seeing Axl jump into the audience to take a camera from someone suggests otherwise. Also I have heard Slash say on many occasions including recently that they don't like to play unreleased material because of bootleggers. I think that it's more of a case that they know it is going to happen anyway.
