Bob Dylan Language For Dummies[/u]
(please read for understanding of Bob's Quote)

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really.

I don't know anyone who's made a compact disc(CD) that has as good audio quality as records in the past twenty years.

You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them. There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ? static?

When you listen to these CDs(Bob, here, is used to saying records from his youth, so he says modern records), they have worser quality than the warm sound of vinyls.

Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it.

The songs sound much better live than on album.  CDs have bad quality, there's no stature.

READ IT.

Some of y'all need to chill out. As others have mentioned, he is criticizing the sound quality of CD's and mp3's vs. vinyl. There are plenty of CD's out there that sound great (AFD being one of them), but he's got more experience at this than any of us so I'll take his word for it. He's not criticizing the actual music, he's criticizing the crappy sound quality.

Dylan is a better lyricist

Prince is a better singer, much better overall musician, prince is way more diverse and I think he is an overall better songwriter as far as music, melody, different styles etc.

Quit believing everything your parents told u and everything the critics say.

He can write a song but to me, thats about it.

I actually own 15 Dylan records and have listend to him since the age of 15. He has written songs in more genres than Prince; Prince has not covered more music territory than Dylan - that simply isn't true. To compare Prince to Bob Dylan is silly because they are from two different eras and are speaking from entirley different platforms. Only The Beatles have contributed to popular music on the levels Bob Dylan has...

i have say about 20 GnR vinyls and i have to say that some songs sound better on vinyl than on CD, for instance on AFD you can barely evenhear Izzy's parts where as on CD its clear to hear it. but i guess its just peoples own opinions of what they like the sounds of best

I don't think that Bob Dylan was dissing any artist in particular. I think what he was trying to say was that the music business isn't as genuine as it once was and there is a lot of music made for the sake of $$$. Music is marketed different and albums are produced with a lot of pre meditated style and image. He's saying in todays music there is less thought put into the songs and less care being put into the production. In fact, Bob Dyaln is going to be touring with 3 good bands from our era. So, don't misread whay he's really trying to say - "There is a lot of crappy music out there these days and folk are buying it"

If that is what he was saying than I agree.

Music is all about posers and carbon copys.

When Paris Hilton can make a record... that is when u know the record business is over.

First of all, you kids need to learn some things, Bob Dylan is the greatest lyricist, songwriter, and poet of the past 100 years. There has not been anyone have the talent and power with words since Shakespeare. By this, he has the right to say anything he wants about the current music scene. Where as I don't agree with him, you all need to learn who he is and his work before you go around bashing him like this.

And FYI, he's only 62, not quite 100 years old.

direct quote from bob dylan (or someone who looks like him anyways)
"i used to be with 'it', then they changed what 'it' was, now what im with is'nt 'it' anymore, and whats 'it' seems weird and scary"

all old people have problems with music the young people like.

if you are going to quote him, quote the entire thing not just one sentence taken out of context.

I read the whole Dylan interview in RS. He is only talking about HOW the material is recorded and the sound of it. He is not saying there are no good songs or albums. Basically too much technology can lead to poor recordings/poor production.  peace

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.  Dylan's only covered the blues, rockabilly, soul, jazz, folk, rock n roll, gospel, country, etc....Dylan's done it all and then some....Prince, while interesting in his own right, can't touch Dylan...not musically not lyrically.  That's not personal taste either, that's just fact.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

No, it is your opinion, and most music critics would probably agree that Prince is more diverse when it comes to his SOUND. Dylan is a better lyricist but he has never been regarded as a strong singer, and his main style is folk - Prince is definitely more "out there" than Dylan when it comes to experimentation with different genres. Listen to 3121 (or whatever it's called) and then compare that to Purple Rain - you'd never think it's the same guy.
