http://www.mad.tv/news/?id=21764

this is an article about gnr requirements regarding their show in athens on july 10th.

i will attemt to translate it

*4 trucks and 6 tour buses will be used in order to move the equipment and the gnr crew which consists of 80 people

*band members travel by liar jets and limos

*the show will have pyrotechniks(sp?)  and confetti

*every band member will have his own room backstage with airconditioning

*Axl and the band members requested a yard backstage in order to relax rofl

*Axl's room backstage will be white with lots of roses and 150 black towels rofl

*Axl's room backstage will have lots of tv screens so that Axl can watch fans gettin inside the venue as well as the reactions of fans in the front rows

*gnr have asked for a dressing room and have employed a 'tailor" who will solve clothe-related problems

*gnr will look for second hand guitars and want the keybord technician to be at all times with them

that's about it-sorry for the translation mistakes ok

The funniest request to me is the tailor for "clothes related issues."  They've worn the same things at all of the shows!   That tailor has the easiest job in the world!    hihi

Yeah, that looks like it's from the UYI tour days, because James Hetfield reads off a bunch of those in one of Metallica's home videos from the Metallica/GN'R tour.

Having said that, I don't want to turn this into anti-Metallica thread, I just thought I'd point out when I think these Axl backstage requirements might be from.

well you are making a judgement on an unconfirmed article, you are creating your opinion without knowing the facts and in the end it is totally Axl's private thing what he does or does not.  no maybe he gives all the towels to charity after he (ab)uses them each night  hihi

Yep, in this article, whether it's true or joke, there're two things I don't quite get.

1)Why should the towels be black?

2)Why do they look for second hand guitars and not new ones? Are these to smash on the stage?

Folks, I can make perfect sense of the outlandish requests that rockstars like Axl make.  It's all very simple.  There's approximately 1, 000, 000, 000, 002 things that can go wrong at a show, ruining it for all the fans.  A major piece of equipment could fail, a plug could be plugged in the wrong way, a piece of euipment could get packed wrong, destroying it, an instrument could be plugged into the wrong board, etc., etc., etc.  The shows are extremely carefully pre-planned and must be followed to the letter.  The reason those lavish things are on the contract is to prove that the venue and the show organizer READ THE DAMN CONTRACT.  If they did not read the contract, then all those things that could go wrong at the show probably will.  If they don't read the contract, the performer could get into a LOT of trouble....not only with the fans if the show goes wrong, but financially if there's a disaster, and even physically if there's a riot or he/she gets electrocuted because some jerk didn't read the fine print.   These lavish things in the contract are for YOUR benefit, the fans.  There's just far too much on the line for a show to have something major go wrong, so these things are all safeguards against that sort of thing.  It is simply far too dangerous to NOT have these things in a contract.  They insure the safety of the performer and the entertainment of the fans.

He employs a crew of around 100 other people. He's helping 100 other less fortunate people just by doing his job. How many less fortunate people did you help today just by existing? Not 100, I'm guessing. 100 people and their families have food and clothes, money for bills and mortgages and loan repayments, just because GNR are touring. That goes a little further than your $5 donation to the salvation army, 'kay? 'Kay.

1)Why should the towels be black?

I'd guess it's so that you can tell that they're new, and not the promoter's hand-me-downs. Same for the amount, 150, no-one has 150 towels laying around and certainly not 150 black ones. You'd be forced to go and buy them. And so, Axl gets a clean, unused towel. And 149 spares. Because it's hot under those lights, dammit! Also, put them all in a pile and you've got a makeshift matress! It's way cheaper for the promoter to buy 150 black towels than to buy a king-sized bed. I'd rather ask for the bed though, because you can tell it's new and unused because it's wrapped in plastic. Actually, I'd ask for 150 black california king-size beds and I'd bring my own towel.

For that matter, why doesn't he sell his Ferrari, his crib and all the rights to his music and give it all to the poor?? Why stop at roses and towels?? ? confused

I am by no means an Axl apologist, but he's earned his money.? He'll spend it as he sees fit.? The taxes he's paid alone probably contribute to more charitable causes than any of us ever will...

Artists' diva behavior and requests are basically based on the "cuz I can" rule. There's one thing that always struck me as weird. When you start out in a band, you're lucky if you get a case of beer and a sandwich at the club you're playing, yet you put on a show and you do it and it's all great and fun. Then they sell a couple of million records and all of a sudden they need all this stupid shit and make ridiculous demands. I mean, I understand if you want a decent meal and some drinks and stuff, but 150 black towels?

But I'm not talking about just Axl, I'm talking about a lot of artists. The whole "the couch needs to be white leather or else I'll be unhappy" thing always seemed idiotic to me.

OK...I'm breaking my haiku thing THIS ONCE.
Van Halen put it best in reply to questions about their infamous "no brown M&M" rule.
Their stage setup was very heavy, and required that there be certain modifications to the stage itself to support their sets.? If these modififcations were not made for each show, the result could be a literal stage collapse, risking injury or death to band and fans alike.? If the promoters read the contract and followed it to the letter, and there were no brown M&Ms in the bowl, then the odds were that all other parts of the contract had been read and complied with.? If, on the other hand, there WERE brown M&Ms in the bowl, then obviously part of the contract had been skipped or ignored.? If one part is ignored, then what else may be?? Would the stage construction be within tolerances?? It can't be risked.? It wasn't a diva thing...it was, and is, a very real safety issue.?
If there aren't precisely 150 towels, as outlined in the contract, then how can one be sure that the precise required voltages are figured correctly?? That pyro is set up in the EXACT places where bandmembers expect it, and know not to step, and not two inches away, in a possible danger zone?
It's less of an "I'll be unhappy" thing than a "How can we be sure the important things are handled as outlined" thing.?
God, it feels weird not to post in haiku.? Not used to it here anymore!!!!? Tongue
OK.? Back to my normal style.

Rockstars or not, they're all spoiled babies.
