Ok, so 2006 looks set to be the year. But at the time (ie, before the tour collapsed), 02 looked like a solid bet too. I know there were differences and stuff, but theyve been done to dead horse. What Im wondering is - was the GNR community in 02 buzzing like it is now with release date infos, speculation and stuff? Or did Axl's interview on the VMA's kill all that?

I ask because I wasnt active in the community at the time but Im curious as to how it was.

There was lots of speculation... many people were expecting a single in November or December (Catcher in the Rye was the rumour until the MSG gig when Axl told a fan that Catcher was planned for the third album). Then Philly happened and left everyone wondering WTF?!

At Vegas and Rio3 I think everyone got hyped up.  It looked like we were going to hear some new stuff then.  Those were big times.  Then nothing again.  Then came Vegas again and.......then nothing.  Then came Asia and Europe then the US......then nothing again for a long time.

There was more rumor in 2002.

The hype was about the same.

What we have now that we didn't in 2002 is actual activity.  There's much more shit happening now than in '02, more Axl sightings, more photo ops, more press, a successful European tour (they didn't do nearly as many shows in Europe in 2002 prior to the US tour), Kid Rock showing up at Download, Baz doing guest spots, Izzy... there's a lot more momentum this time and I hope to hell the band and Axl uses it to their advantage.

well we had a supposed release date in actual record chain flyers in 2002 (12/3/02, if i remember right)....i think the online gnr community was pretty confident things were really happening...we know how it turned out.

in retrospect though, you could see that things werent right--axl wasnt into it (as evidenced by both his appearence and demeanor, the tour was underpromoted and sold poorly, etc.).

i think things have changed though-just look/listen to a boot from this tour vs. 2002 and its like night and day.

I'm 85 percent sure it'll happen this time.  Everything's in place for a release.  I'm sure it'll be out in November.  Remember in January Axl said they had 26/32 tracks done?  i'm sure they've completed those last 6.

But yes, there was the same hype.  Everyone thought it was gonna happen(at least that's what i've heard).

Yep. There was a radio interview with a DJ in Rio I think about and Axl basically said it would be out within a year. Back then we had a release target and a touring band. Funny ...

Thanks for the people who answered as to what it was like in 02. Guess it goes to prove that a whole lot of rumours means absolutely nothing.

rumors dont mean anything, that certainly is true.  however 2002 didnt work out, after the uk tour, gnr would have down 38 shows, which should be considered a very successful tour, now the next step would only be release CD and tour with some new material.  i think another greatest hits tour would not work out, all they need to do would be 50-50 of new and old.

Hmmm, is this why Buckethead left? He just got frustrated that the album wasn't coming out...?

Yep, all Axl said was, "I don't think soon is the word."

Pretty much said it all really, the rest was pure rumour.

Also I what I was trying to get at here was that there can be a whole of buzz, heaps of talk and people digging the vibe - but that dont mean any music is coming soon.

This has got to be it. We've probably heard half of the album or nearly that by now. If it doesn't come out this year, then it's never coming out.

Of course not. There are no guarantees concerning CD. There's no guarantee of it coming out this year or next year. In fact, I dont see any signs pointing to it being released this year. Axl made one comment on a radio show months ago? Big deal. Look at this quote from 2002:

"There are a lot of new songs that were just done in the last year that we feel that ?Okay, well that bumps a lot of stuff of the previous list,? but it?s time to stop that now and wrap up the baby.  It feels right, the timing, and a lot of things.  We?ve sorted it down to what songs are on the record.  What the sequence of the songs is.  The album cover art is ready.? ? Axl Rose (August, 2002)

Axl gave even better descriptions of what the status was then. We hear one vague comment about fall in 2006 and everyone thinks its time. Well, it was time then as well.
