What IS it Man?!

WWW
« on: September 17, 2006, 11:07:22 AM »

The parking lot attendant asks, "Who's playing tonight?".

"Buckethead."

"Who the fuck's Buckethead?".

Anyway...

On the way in, the doorman asks, "Who's Buckethead?".

"An ex-guitarist for Guns N' Roses."

The doorman then proceeds to say "Axl can't hit the high notes anymore."

I'm like, "No way, yeah he can!".

He says, "Yeah, well there's no Slash.  blah blah blah blah blah".

I kept walking in.  Whatever.

That 1 Guy opened up.  If you've never seen this guy (which I hadn't), he plays this real crazy instrument that has triggers all over it or something (it makes a whole bunch of different sounds).  He also has pick-ups and guitar jacks installed on various items such as a shoe, and a saw.  It was very entertaining.

Buckethead was awesome, and That 1 Guy played on a lot of the songs.  I picked up Bucket's new CD, "Crime Slunk Scene", which features that new awesome tune that's been on YouTube.  This disc is awesome!  It's up there with Colma!  Seriously, it's awesome!

Anyway, after the show, we're waiting by the stage exit door for Buckethead, and let me just say that security were complete assholes!  They kept telling us to leave, and I kept telling them that we didn't want any problems, and that we were just fans.  They finally had the cops threaten us to leave.  It was just me and my friend, and our girlfriends.  They were throwing a fit over 4 fans!  Unreal.

Oh, and before we were told to leave, this suspicious guy came out of the door, and I'm like, "Hey man, is this where the band comes out?".  He says, "I don't know...  Did you guys enjoy the show?".  We say, "Yeah, it was great.  What about you?".  He said that he didn't get to see the show, because he was working it or something.

My friend says, "That's him!  It's Buckethead!".  So I just look at the guy (suspiciously), and say, "Buckethead's awesome, huh?".  He says, "Yeah, but I think he's Paul Gilbert."

Anyway, I doubt it was him, but we were speculating for the rest of the night...

I got some pretty good pics, and I was recording, but I ran out of recording time.  I haven't listened to it yet, to see how it sounds.  If it's anything good, I can post it.

Okay, well I guess that's it.   beer

Oh, and before we were told to leave, this suspicious guy came out of the door, and I'm like, "Hey man, is this where the band comes out?".? He says, "I don't know...? Did you guys enjoy the show?".? We say, "Yeah, it was great.? What about you?".? He said that he didn't get to see the show, because he was working it or something.

My friend says, "That's him!? It's Buckethead!".?

Can I ask what the guy looked like?  I saw a suspicious looking guy watching That 1 Guys's set when we went to the Urbana, IL show the night before the show you saw.  The guy had a hat, glasses, and was wearing biker gloves.  He kept touching his face and wiggling his very large hands around a la buckethead.  The guy looked like a stereotypical nerd, very shy acting too.   When he stood up to shake That 1 Guy's hand after the set, you could see how tall he was....he was very slender too.

My brother and I were spectulating that it might be buckethead...especially since we never saw the guy again the rest of the night.

Btw, what's with all the idiots moshing at the buckethead show.  Calm down and watch the master instead of knocking the bejeezes out of each other!

I saw a young Latino guy.? He had long hair, in a pony tail.? He wasn't particularly tall, either.? I really don't think it was Bucket, but he was acting like he knew something...? He did come out of the band's exit door, after all.? We were really drunk too though.

Anyway, the guy you're talking about sounds more like Bucket to me.? On his newest CD (which is only available at his shows for now), there is a picture of a guy with glasses and a goatee, and I'm thinking, "Who the heck is this guy?".? I read later online that this is supposed to be Buckethead unmasked.? I don't know if that's true or not, but he sounds like the guy you're describing.? I'll upload the pic in a few.

As for the kids moshing...? Yeah, that was dumb, but at least they were getting into it and they didn't mosh into me, so whatever.

Yeah, I can see a resemblance between the guy on that CD case and the guy I saw in the backstage area watching That 1 Guy.  That only thing I would say is that the guy backstage didn't have the same glasses as that guy, had a very thin goatee, and he seemed thinner than the man on the CD case.  But the facial features are similiar.

There were quite a few occasions reported where people saw him (or at least a seven foot guy with massive hands and curly long hair) with bandmates or roadcrew, somewhere around the venue. Especially when they are arriving at the place. It would be easy for you to comment on how nobody could know for sure (mask etc). However people close to him would all tell you that he isn't always ?ber-carefull about it, just like they told me.

I'm jealous - I travel for a living and I was supposed to be in Chicago when this show happened. But I got rescheduled to go to Seattle. I am going to be in Sacramento next week, and was going to go to the GnR concert there and now they have rescheduled it to January!

I'm just missing out on all fronts Sad

Anyhow, thanks for the pics and tunes - greatly appreciated!

I've been a fan of him since the early nineties and have spoken to dozens of people close to him and seen tons of footage where he's Bucketless.

everyone thinks he is? paul gilbert.
And they'd be wrong... He took lessons from Paul Gilbert back in the day. And Paul's recent material sounds nothing like BH.

I used to have an old guitar magazine from the late 80s that had a photo of Brian Caroll (a.k.a. Buckethead)? in it, along with a profile of him as an up-and-coming shredder.

**a brief google search later**

Here it is:

You should be banned for being that insensitive and disrespectfull towards Buckethead and his fans.....

Some people have made a conscious decision not ever wanting to see Buckethead unmasked (because it takes away from the mystery for them), yet every once in a while some mental midget comes along and ambushes them into it anyhow.

True, but the picture exists and there's nothing we or google can do about it. Sad as it is, it will always surface sooner or later. However, in the aforementioned context people will decide for themselves if they want to see it and go look for it (unimaginable, yet fine with me). Here in some thread about some Chicago show, people (including those who really don't want to) are literally ambushed into seeing it.

Anywayzz, thanks for the quick solution!

Ps.

Board Rules:

Posting pictures of Buckethead without his mask isn't allowed.
Until Buckethead decides to start appearing without his mask, you won't see that kind of pictures here.

No need for such an abrasive and Neanderthal reply. Looking at the link to the board rules that you've provided, I would note that they include refraining from "...personal attacks, slander and/or insults of any kind...", which I would certainly categorize your language as. I'm fine with being corrected as to my actions here, but but if you're going to rag on someone for being ignorant of the rules, the least you can do is adhere to them yourself.

As you say, perhaps 'some' fans don't want to see Bucket unmasked. I'd wager there are just as many, if not more, that are curious as to what he looks like. Posting that photo was hardly an 'ambush', as that would imply that I were out to kill people's enjoyment of Buckethead's tunes and imagery, which wasn't the case. Plus, the photo's been around for awhile, and I've never come across a board before, where posting specific photos (outside of porn) was prohibited. It was an innocent mistake.

Will, thanks for removing the picture, and sorry for my oversight there.

For somebody who?s so into the slander-part of the board rules it sure makes you look silly to be talking about a Neanderthal-reply. Good going there, you've just disqualified you?re whole whiny rant on slander.

I know that when people ignore the board rules as violently as you do (in respect to such a vital aspect of Buckethead), most really aren?t that offended by a true Buckethead fan letting his heart speak (using his third insult in 4 years of membership). After all, a mistake is quickly made when people are passionate about something, as is illustrated by your hypocritical application of the slander rule. The ones who are offended are the ones like you who seem to have no clue whatsoever what Buckethead is about, yet don?t hesitate calling themselves ?fans?.

I'm fine with being corrected as to my actions here, but but if you're going to rag on someone for being ignorant of the rules, the least you can do is adhere to them yourself.

The best way to succeed in life is to act on the advice we give to others. Fact of the matter is that when you would have read the rules and refrained from posting that picture, I wouldn't even have bothered responding in such a fashion. It's a matter of action and reaction. I'm always astonished to see how hypocritical people can respond to something they planted the seed for themselves.

As you say, perhaps 'some' fans don't want to see Bucket unmasked. I'd wager there are just as many, if not more, that are curious as to what he looks like.

Real Buckethead fans are the ones who have read the dozens of interviews the man has given in which he voices how important it is for people to respect his anonymity and make that respect shine thru in their actions. Real fans have empathy for what?s important to Buckethead and the people that support him. His true fans, the ones who really get him, don?t want to see him unmasked at all. All of them would be very sad if the man one day would decide to loose the character and start performing unmasked like all the others.

Posting that photo was hardly an 'ambush', as that would imply that I were out to kill people's enjoyment of Buckethead's tunes and imagery, which wasn't the case.

For many people a big part of their fascination with Buckethead has to do with his total separation of the music and ego & identity of the player, and the freedom (in making music) the man experiences (and expresses) by having an alter ego. They are fascinated by the concept of this mysterious entity who?s music only seems to exist when he's in full uniform. You taking away from this anonymity and mystery, for those who really didn?t expect to come across that picture in some thirteen in a dozen thread about some Chicago show, are indeed ambushing many of his real fans. Just because you can?t place yourself in the mind of a fan who consiously avoided seeing that picture for a decade, doesn?t make it any less true.

Say what you want, but there's nothing that could prepare a fan for that picture, when looking at this thread title.

Plus, the photo's been around for awhile, and I've never come across a board before, where posting specific photos (outside of porn) was prohibited. It was an innocent mistake.

Bullshit.

Many boards on the net won?t allow that picture being posted. Because they understand what it means to Buckethead. The innocence of your mistake is illustrated by the fact that a board rule is dedicated to that picture. Other board's rules and ignorance don't apply here.

Good grief... what have I gotten myself into? Roll Eyes Tongue

For somebody who’s so into the slander-part of the board rules it sure makes you look silly to be talking about a Neanderthal-reply... Good going there, you've just disqualified you’re whole whiny rant on slander.

Hypocrisy? Perhaps, but no more than you've shown. I'm not one to slander or insult people, but when somebody attacks me first, I think I'm entitled to play loose with the rules of 'netiquette' in my reply to them.

And that was hardly a rant. It was three sentences. That doesn't qualify as a rant.

a mistake is quickly made when people are passionate about something, as is illustrated by your hypocritical application of the slander rule.
...or by your initial reply to me, wherein you called me a 'mental midget', declared me a non-fan, and asked for me to be banned over an innocent mistake.

...ones like you who seem to have no clue whatsoever what Buckethead is about, yet don’t hesitate calling themselves “fans”... Real Buckethead fans are... Real fans have... His true fans... All of them would be very sad if the man one day would decide to loose the character and start performing unmasked like all the others.
That's just your opinion, and a rather elitist stance to take, IMO. You're saying that I'm a non-fan because I don't put a lot of weight on the imagery and identity of Buckethead. I would disagree. For me, I'm just into his music. He's one of my favourite guitarists, and one of the few guys playing these days who continuously re-invents himself. I could care less if he wore a mask, I'd still listen to him.

To me, a non-fan is somebody who's into his work solely for the costume and gimmickry aspect, or thinks that his musical career began with Guns n' Roses. But again, these are just my own opinions, and I'm not about to go on acting as if they're some moral compass by which others' should be judged, as you do. To each there own...

Well, if you've convinced yourself that I posted that photo as a malicious 'ambush' against helpless fans, then there's nothing I can do to change that... arguing with you further would be nothing more than watering a cement garden in that case. If in fact you yourself are one of these hardcore fans that you speak of, that has had their perception of Buckethead ruined by my mistake, then you have my apologies. It wasn't my intent.

Can we please move on now?
