Is this widely known? Also, is this a coincidence? I had never heard any reference to this until I played trivia last weekend in Dallas and that was one of the questions.

"What rocker chose his name based on it being an anagram for Oral Sex?"

Yet I understood that Rose was his birth name from his father William Rose.

I think it was a coincidence. ?Axl's biological father was named William Rose. ?That's where the W. Rose comes from. ?And AXL was the name of one his earlier bands with Izzy. ?I know I'm just restating old information, but that's his explanation of the name, so I think the anagram had to be an accident. ?
But that would be cool for someone to ask Axl -- I've never heard him address that in an interview. ?
