SLASH: New Signature EPIPHONE Guitar To Debut At NAMM - Dec. 10, 2007

Epiphone Guitar announced today the introduction of the new Slash signature Les Paul Standard Plus Top electric guitar. Designed and produced in close cooperation with Slash, this new Epiphone combines all the great design features that have made the Les Paul guitar "the" rock guitar while Slash's own personal touches create a unique instrument destined to become an instant classic.

The new Epiphone Slash Les Paul starts with all the basic features of an LP including a solid Mahogany body with a highly-figured, flame Maple top and glued-in Mahogany neck. Standard equipment now on most Epiphone models is the new LockTone stopbar/tune-o-matic system that secures the bridge and tailpiece to the guitar even without strings while adding as much as 20% more sustain. Unique to the Slash LP are features including, the neck joint which uses a long neck tenon typically found on late-1950s Les Pauls. Extending well into the neck pickup cavity, this provides more strength, more wood-to-wood contact and ultimately, more tone and sustain.

Next, the Slash Custom neck profile or shape is patterned after Slash's original Les Paul and his choice of pickups are two Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro-II open-coil humbuckers. Finally, the guitar features a Dark Tobacco Burst finish, nickel hardware and machine heads with vintage "tulip" buttons.

The new Epiphone Slash signature guitar will make its initial public debut at the upcoming Winter NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA in January 2008. Projected U.S. MSRP is $1,165 and includes a certificate of authenticity. An optional hard case is available for $115. The Epiphone Slash will be available at authorized Epiphone retailers worldwide in December 2007. Slash will be making special appearances related to the launch. Details will be announced on www.epiphone.com over the next few weeks.

Mahogany body, maple cap, mahogany neck...that's Gibson stuff. A lot of Epiphones don't actually have mahogany bodies, but have alder bodies (some with a mahogany veneer).

SLASH: New Signature EPIPHONE Guitar To Debut At NAMM - Dec. 10, 2007

Extending well into the neck pickup cavity, this provides more strength, more wood-to-wood contact and ultimately, more tone and sustain.

So. it has standard Epi appointments and a long-tenon neck joint and a thin neck. The maple cap will be maple with a flamed veneer, so nothing all that special there. Sorry...that sounds like a pretty standard guitar with "Slash" written on it. Certainly not better than the Japanese imports (Burny, Edwards, Tokai) you can get for less than that. Get one of them, write "Slash" on the truss rod cover, change the pickups (if you want to), and you have a much better quality guitar with the "correct" headstock shape!

My Edwards is the best guitar I have ever played. Every time someone else plays it, I have to pry it out of their hands. I'm not saying it's better than Gibsons, but it is better than most Gibsons I've tried. Seymour Duncan pickups, too...!

Nope, China. They were once made in Korea.

And of course the two epiphone copies of those two mentioned above.

Kind of wierd the whole epiphone thing. It's wierd seeing Slash posing with an epiphone guitar knowing he would never ever play one live... Maybe they'll force him to do so now tho, like at least on one song every gig or something... I guess it depends on how much cash he got for this deal...

/jarmo

So far, we have:

1. Gibson Snakepit - discontinued
2. Epiphone Snakepit - discontinued
3. Gibson Slash
4. Epiphone Slash
5. Gibson Les Paul Slash V.O.S. (Vintage Original Specifications)

Some more info:

The Snakepit models were similar to an ordinary "Les Paul Classic", while the later Slash model is more like the actual guitar Slash plays, wich is based on a rare (= made for a short time only) 60's model, later custom equipped with special Seymour Duncan pickups. It's basically a mix of Joe Perry's old Les Paul with Jeff Beck's old pickups.

The Gibson Slash also has a special pickup (Fishman) and an extra switch, both absent on both Snakepit models (Gibson AND Epiphone) and the latest Epiphone model.

The current Epi model is way overpriced. You could as well buy a vintage sunburst, mid-90's, korean made Epi LP Classic on eBay, take offthe pickguard, put a pair of Duncan's in and have an even better guitar for half the money, looking, sounding and feeling just the same.

As far as I know, Slash never played an Epiphone, he just posed with one for the ads. The contract said he had to have one on display on stage and he did, but I never saw him playing it.

In my opinion, signature models are for collector's and hardcore fans with too much money on their hands. Most guitarists probably have found their own "dream / custom guitar" not by copying someone else, but by making modifications and changes to the one standard model they've found to work best for them - like Slash, Buckethead and Robin did with their Les Paul models.

Slash went one step further than that...his 80s Les Paul was made by a custom luthier, not Gibson. The man who is oft credited with the resurgence of the Les Paul in the 80s ironically did not, in fact, play a Gibson at the time.

You mean "how long before the Gibson Casket and the Gibson Condoms?". This is Gibson marketing for a Gibson product, and they are going to milk it for all they can. Having a go at Slash for this is like having a go at that boy who plays Harry Potter because the film company has allowed McDonalds to put his face on their burger wrappers.

Gibson is a blue chip company in the guitar world, and it says alot about Slash's popularity, status as a rock icon and commercial viability that Gibson has put the effort into creating the marketing campaign for the launch of his new signature models that they have. The president of the company this year said that the Slash launch and the launch of a new Jimmy Page guitar were the biggest priorities this year. That is some decent company to be in in terms of a company valuing your worth to them.

They have plenty of other guitarists on the roster, and they wouldn't be wasting their time, effort and money on Slash if they didn't think he would deliver a return on their investment in him and his brand. They picked him as one of the main priorities to focus on, and when you look at their roster of guitarists he should feel very proud of all his achievements that put him in a position to be valued like that.

I can't get that link to work without changing my security settings, which I am not about to do. I can only guess what is on there.

Your point is that there seems to be a lot of promotional items already. Launching your comment from the promotional activity for these guitars has no merit - this is a Gibson marketing campaign for one of their guitars.

All bands and artists have promotional items; it is the nature of the game now that nobody buys CDs any more. Even GNR's official shop has official GNR incense and scented candles.

The Gimme That Cool Slash Les Paul Gibson-YouTube Video Contest

Give you that cool Slash Les Paul? That Gibson Custom Shop Slash Signature Vintage Original Spec limited edition Les Paul?! Yeah, okay, we can do that. But here?s what you gotta do: Make a video?an original video?that lets Gibson and Slash himself know how much you love him, how bad you want that Les Paul, and why you deserve it more than anybody else. And be creative! We?re busy and we have short attention spans, and we?re going to have to watch a million of these. So you better make that video stand out. This is a killer Les Paul, so fire up the camera and get busy!

Seriously, Gibson. no

How greedy can you get?

Oh, Gibson is suing Activision over Guitar Hero, citing some obscure patent they registered a long time ago. This in spite the fact that Activision already licenses guitar models from Gibson for their controllers. Apparently, that money wasn't enough. Find the story here.

I dunno why people think this guitar is a rip off??  Well UK prices seem really good (and we usually get stiffed in UK) As the guitar has a better neck profile, the Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro II pickups and a hard case that the regular Epi Standard doesnt have... sure you can buy a case and the pickups but you cant upgrade the neck... plus as long as it sounds good and plays well I dont give a fuck whos name is on the headstock.

Gibson Guitar Corp. went further with its patent infringement claims regarding Guitar Hero and filed a lawsuit against major retailers selling the game, including Wal-Mart, Amazon, Kmart, GameStop and others. This followed the January 7 lawsuit against Activision, the publisher of the popular game, when Gibson claimed Guitar Hero infringed its patent.

The guitar maker asked the retailers to stop selling the game and even more than that, to remove the game from their store. As it has been reported in the media, Gibson is also seeking damage, but an exact figure hasn?t been specified so far.

The game publisher responded through a public statement, saying: ?Our Guitar Hero retailing partners have done nothing wrong. We will confront this and any other efforts by Gibson to wrongfully interfere with Activision?s relationship with its customers and its consumers.?

Activision responded at the time that the game does not violate any patent of Gibson?s: ?We disagree with the applicability of their patent and would like legal determination on this,? said George Rose, Activision general counsel. Activision also asked one question: why did Gibson decided to wait 3 years before alleging a patent infringement?

According to Gibson, they have a patent for a device that allows a user to play along with a song (or something similar). Gibson says that since this concept is the basis for Guitar Hero, Activision should pay them royalties for the game or stop selling the product.

If you read the original patent, it was meant for recording or something and Gibson's claim that it applies to GH is a bit of a stretch.
