Fascinating.  I like hearing Tommy's insights into what took so long.  Of course any suggestion that it wasn't entirely Axl's fault will be met with disbelief by most  hihi

That was a good read!

Seems like If The World will sound a bit different live. Or did he mean they had to work on the arrangements for the recording of ITW, to be able to play it live(?) Either way, can't wait to hear it!

Thanx for posting GypsySoul!!    ok   beer

Great interview.

I like how he was honest about everything, in terms of coming to respect the GNR legacy, what he wanted to bring into the band and so on. I think that really comes across on alot of the tracks on the record. The guys on the album really took the time to both compliment each other and bring their own ideas in.

What I found very revealing, and also kinda sweet, is the way he references Duff.

I wonder if you could ever get an interview with Robin where he would say, or would feel free to say, Well, I wondered, what would Slash do?

Great read, once again an 'insider' says Axl is not the evil maniac that some of the 'outsiders' claim - can't wait for the tour.   I would love to see an 'in-depth' interview with the entire band, see their interaction etc., and would think we would see one in one of the 'major' pub's shortly before tour begins.  ok

Could be. But I'm not sure Robin Finck or Chris Pitman had put out a record at that point. Didn't Trent play all the NIN stuff?

Pitman had recorded two released album at that point, as well as numerous demos, and writing for other artists.  He was also part of Tool's Aenima tour... which would probably make Tobias the guy he was talking about, except he said it was eight people collaborating together at the time, and there were only seven band members.
Although the extra person would probably be Youth or someone else of that ilk, and no one could accuse him of not being experienced enough (Killing Joke and The Fireman aren't exactly minor projects).  So yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't like Paul's stuff to begin with, and then gradually started to see their potential.  I know I wasn't expecting much from him, but he came out with some really great stuff on the record.

he used the same "8 people collaborating" before.. and the other person was Buckethead
i also remember an article saying that tommy and paul had problems in the beggining, because paul had a huge ego and had the whole guns atittude and have enver toured..

Not in 1998 it wasn't.  Although it's possible he was talking about everything after then too, it did sound as if he was talking about when he first joined specifically.

And no, I don't think it was a swipe at all.  I think it was more acknowledging that there was a certain arrogance that had to be overcome in order to realise that people with less experience than them could have good ideas.  That's probably where the collaboration came in, getting to know each other both on a personal level, and professionally in regards to what everybody is capable of, to bring everyone onto the same path.

I was a keen reader of tommy interviews and I thought the 8 were the 2002 lineup when he mentioned that in 2003/4.

absolutely. "at first"..... "but"... are the key words.

yeah i also understand.. that the 8 are the 2002 line-up
he started talking about the egnesis of the new band but the writing stage didnt finish in 99.. and i really think that the meat of this album was written/arranged in the BH era

Pick up the April '09 issue of Bass Player for our exclusive interview with Guns N' Roses bassist Tommy Stinson. Here's  more from that interview.

How did you come to play with Soul Asylum?
We?re all old friends from high school. After [bassist] Karl Mueller passed away in 2005 from throat cancer, his widow Mary Beth asked if I?d fill in for gigs the band booked before he died. When the band went to finish the record they?d started, she asked me to do that, too. Apparently Karl had a list of people he wanted to take his place in the band, and I was on it. I like those guys a lot?fortunately I?ve been available to do shows with them the past couple years.

You just got back from playing a Soul Asylum gig in Lima, Peru. What was that like?
There?s a lot of turmoil in the government. Around town, you can feel something?s not quite right. It?s chaotic and sketchy, but we met a lot of neat people. They don?t get to see a whole lot of live music. Soul Asylum did a big press conference?it was like the Beatles had come. [Laughs.]

Aside from Guns and Soul Asylum, what else are you up to?
I have my own studio where I do my own music. I couple years ago I scored a movie for Sony Pictures called Catch and Release. That was really fun, and I?m trying to get more into that.

How did you get that gig?
I played on a track of Paul Westerberg for Open Season. The woman who hired him asked to hear some of my music, and they loved it. They couldn?t just give me the contract, since I was a new composer?it was a $40 million movie?so they had to pair me up with someone. I teamed up with BT [film composer Brian Transeau] because he?s a friend of mine, and we?ve worked together before. It was a good fit. The producers gave us ideas like, ?We want something that sounds like Los Lobos.? I love Los Lobos, but I would never try to cop them?they are so good! So we?d come up with our own thing. It was a blast, writing things unlike anything I?d done before.

How does film scoring work?
Before filming starts, you sit down and draw up blueprints of where there are going to be musical moments. Then they film it, often with some sort of temporary music in place to help the producers visualize the finished product. It was a great experience ? and it paid me a lot of money, which was great, too!

Do you have plans to do more of that?
I do, but it?s a hard racket to get into. And right now is a really hard time for movies. A great way to get back into it is to hit the independent film circuit, but since so many hedge funds have gone bankrupt, there aren?t many indy movies going into production right now. I?ve had to put it on the back burner, but my studio is up and ready for when I do get the call.
I like the idea of having my own studio to score movies, but I can?t really count on those jobs coming in. And I?m going to be pretty busy with Guns for the next year and a half, so I might rent it out or put it in storage. I?d like to say that I?d use it to produce bands, but there?s hardly enough time to do my own music.

What was your involvement in the new Replacements re-releases?
Peter Jesperson and Phil Broussard, Paul?s manager and I did a lot of stuff. In my studio, Phil and I mixed a lot of the extra tracks that weren?t originally mixed. Years ago the analog tapes were dumped to digital files, and we worked with those. The tapes are old, and I didn?t want to be the one responsible for messing up our first record. [Laughs.]

In 2004, you released your own record, Village Gorrilla Head. Do you have plans to do another album?
There are a bunch of songs I?ve been working on for the last few years. I might just put them up as a free download?it?d definitely simpler that way. I can?t be bothered going the record label route; that?s a big pain in the ass, and they don?t seem to know what they?re doing right now anyway.

good that he will be "pretty busy with GNR for the next year and a half" hope it'll be for a longer time  smoking

I'd say mid to late summer would be an optimistic view, but you never know with this band.  We didn't find out for sure that Chinese Democracy would actually be released until a little over a month before the release date.  So when/if it IS finally announced maybe the wait won't be that long.

with 3000 differents guitars..  1000 amps.. 10 kinds drums

i remember an RTB interview about the darkness last akbum production.. saying they used like 30 dif guitars in just one song.. with parts where one guitar was just a few secs

Tommy  ok

Great guy, great musician!

For those 0,2 % of you that don't have his solo album (Village Gorilla Head), pick it up. Well worth your while. Not so much what's in the title, Village People, Gorillaz and Motorhead but I will say that he is forever blessed by me for including Motorhead in the title!  Cool

Will be a blast to see GNR live again and in looking forward to many of the new songs, one was actually If The World and Tommy on that. Funny.

She does a service for this site so go figure.

Riad live kick ass! The Vegas 01 performance was killer and I'm sure the band have fun playing it.

For those 0,2 % of you that don't have his solo album (Village Gorilla Head), pick it up. Well worth your while. Not so much what's in the title, Village People, Gorillaz and Motorhead but I will say that he is forever blessed by me for including Motorhead in the title!  Cool
Are you sure its Motorhead? I thought it was Radiohead...

Well, I agree with you - VGH is awesome. And it would be really cool if Tommy put his next solo album for free download!!!

I've been meaning to ask about these scans, actually. I enjoyed reading the interview but are these scan any more legitimate than say an early gnr leak?

If you want me to remove them, just say so.

We'd just have to make sure that everybody knows that the objection came from fellow GN'R fans.

It seems like some of you aren't happy that GypsySoul has spent her time and money on bringing these articles to all of us here. Just simply because she chooses to make sure that those who like to post others' work as their own, can't do so as easily as they wish.

Within like half an hour, the article was posted on other forums. That in itself isn't the issue. The problem is when people just take and pretend it's their work. I don't think it's unfair that she should get some credit for actually typing the article out.....

"What really happened was the record company stood back and left Axl to his own devices. Axl had all these ideas, and he needed someone to help interpret what he wanted. He had to bascially produce himself, and that's not what he went into this wanting to do."

I thought that was the most interesting part. It makes some more sense of what Axl said in his last interview.

aye yes

Tommy on "Why I Called My Album Village Gorilla Head"
"It comes from the song on the album called Village Gorilla Head which was three parts of music that I was trying to sew together to make a song out of. When I first started writing, for lack of anything else to call it, one part of it reminded me of Motorhead and one part reminded me of The Village People. As I sewed it together it seemed a good idea to call it Village Gorilla Head. Some people might find it interesting, but I don't. After trying to come up with serious titles and funny titles, my manager came up with the idea that I call it that. I thought about it for about half an hour and decided to go with it."

Is she the author of the article?

It's not an objection. I'm pointing out that you're breaking copyright rules and to have it watermarked as "here today..." maybe isn't the smartest idea ever

Since you used to be so big on copyrights here *cough demos cough*, I thought it went for all things copyrighted. Not just certain things, which makes no sense at all.

You are 100% correct. Spreading unfinished leaks that were stolen and you paid nothing for is exactly the same as GypsySoul buying a copy of a magazine and spending her own time typing it all out for others to enjoy. Everybody is here is a likely Bass Player magazine buyer and reader.  Roll Eyes

Do you know how much material on fan sites is selfmade?

It's somewhat telling that the guy who's offended by this is the same guy who's spent a lot of time whining about how this board is run.

Edit: I put the scans back. It seems like there's something called fair use.

If you're the copyright owner of said piece and you object to us using it for news reporting and commenting, please get in touch and we'll remove the scans ASAP.

You'll have to ask those DCK and chuzeville what their real problem is.

I'm sure it wouldn't have been a problem if there was no mention of where the scans came from. So they could've posted them as their own work on other sites without mentioning this horrible site that can't be mentioned by name.

For those complaining, we still got the most important part from their website.

True that, first it was the Robin leaving thread getting hijacked by slash fans, now we have members who have a problem with a scan of a magazine ? rofl

: ok:Cool interview! I like that he kind of shed some light on why Chinese took so long to do ... and it WASN'T just Axl being a diva, but the sum of the problems caused when drummers and guitarists leave, record companies put their nose where it doesn't belong, and not where it does.

I'm still kinda bummed about how poorly marketed CD was. I really think Best Buy dropped the ball. My local Wal-Mart just took down the Black Ice stuff like last week, and there's still lots of AC/DC things everywhere. Oh well, at least we got the best album I've heard in years out of the deal.

Oooo, how well you know me.

I asked a simple question regarding intellectual property considering that this forum's administration is usually pretty strict about it, that's it. If fair use is your answer, then why not just say it right away?
So now we can all reflect upon the 4 criteria of fair use:
       1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
       2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
       3. the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
       4. the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

I'm a librarian, you see so I'm interested in those things.

But, yeah, the name of the forum on material copyrighted by someone else is a bit too much! By the way did you like Kevin Cogill's last album?  hihi

I asked a simple question regarding intellectual property considering that this forum's administration is usually pretty strict about it, that's it.

Is this about your wish to download leaks and talk about them?

I'm fully aware that some of you are still upset that we didn't let you talk about those unfinished songs and will keep going on and on about it for all eternity.

I guess in your opinion if we allow people to post GN'R articles, we should allow you all to post link to download GN'R music for free.

 Roll Eyes

If fair use is your answer, then why not just say it right away?

I thought it was obvious why somebody would post articles on fan sites.

Or photos. Or Youtube links.

I'm a librarian, you see so I'm interested in those things.

Maybe next time you can keep your complaining out of the threads and let those who wish to discuss the material do so?

But, yeah, the name of the forum on material copyrighted by someone else is a bit too much!

Of course.  Roll Eyes

But if you look closely, it doesn't claim to be copyrighted by the forum in question.

Maybe our rules aren't strict enough for you and you need to look for a stricter place where you can post?

If you're gonna do the same routine every time somebody posts a (news) article, I think the above is a good option for you.

I guess it's the old "if you won't allow us to download GN'R's songs for free, you shouldn't let us read articles for free either" routine. Obviously you didn't think before speaking of that's your opinion. If we start doing that, you wouldn't see a whole lot of things posted on any fan sites. A majority of news articles are copyrighted. Just because you can easily copy and paste them doesn't mean they're not.

What's left to post for you?

If you have taken pics at GN'R shows, you might have violated the venue's rules regarding photography.

You can't post pics that you found on Google because they're not yours to post. Forget news articles. Etc. etc.

We have to draw the line somewhere. And we did. We don't promote stealing from GN'R.
