So it does look like GN'R will play both weekends. Kinda like Coachella in 2016.

Large crowds, perfect to introduce a new song for a new era of GNR, imo.  And while I'm at it, there's something wrong about 4, odd numbers are better, we need a 5th show even if it's a small club.  Cheesy

Seems like GNR is by far the heaviest band on the bill. I wonder what the crowd will be like.

No, no and no. We have spent decades and thousands following the band. We must get the new music first and not in some festival where most are random people peace

Would make sense since there's already a show for the second Sunday in TN. Plus you have to travel there.....

Hell yeah!! I can't wait. I'm going both weekends and this will be the easiest trip to I've ever made to see them, since 93. I live in Austin, don't really care for ACL but i'm all over it this year.

I think this is it.  It's too costly to get out all their stage stuff and activate a full crew for a few single shows.  Unless there is some more festivals and I didn't see any I thought would work, this is it.

Good news though, if they want to keep that crew and not pay to store all that stuff, they're probably working on a world tour.  Little road rats that they are, we'll all get to see them.  Cheesy

It has been awhile since Ive seen an article on GNR this bad.  Only thing I got out of it was the history of the band as seen thru the eyes of a pretentious hack "journalist"

Why Are We Still Rewarding Guns N' Roses in 2019?

This year’s Austin City Limits festival has announced its 2019 line-up, and for the most part, the roster is solid. The Cure, fresh off their induction into both the Rock & Roll and Shady Bitch Halls of Fame. Billie Eilish, the filthy possessed child from every American horror movie of the last 15 years. Cardi B on weekend one and Robyn on weekend two. Kacey Musgraves and Lizzo in the smaller print on the poster, because the world seems intent on undervaluing American royalty.

And because 2019 is garbage, the festival will be headlined by Guns N’ Roses, who are the worst, and you know it.

Read on if you want, it goes downhill from here......https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/music/a27324259/why-is-guns-n-roses-headlining-austin-city-limits-2019/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=socialflowFBESQ&utm_medium=social-media&fbclid=IwAR2YowYCWceiNoqsmHff7r-vLTMvQHkJ2emKVWZvc5ndK1Rq2diIRNWxvG8

“Who is a Replacements fan just like me.”  I happen to have been in college during the AFD time period. It just so happens that 3 of my all time favorite records were released in 1987-AFD, Pleased To Meet Me by The Replacements, and Joshua Tree by U2. There was no love lost between the fan bases.

Disclaimer: I don't agree with the article!

Having said that.....don't you think we're saying it's terrible just because we don't agree with it? Critics should be free to say things like this. It's not badly written, by someone too young to remember what GNR were all about; he was there, he's expressing his opinion. It's reasonably witty in places and he seems informed. It's not an ignorant hack-job.

It's a modern phenomenum to deride any opinion other than ones own. It's ok to have different opinions. It doesn't make you a bad writer.

No, because we can read and it's a shitty article with errors in it written just to get a reaction....  Cheesy

GNR burst onto the scene in 1987, and were ridiculous from the jump.

Then he goes on to point out how ridiculous the opening of the Jungle video is.
Now, I can respect that opinion, while disagreeing. But if that's an issue.... Jeez!

So to answer the question in the article's headline. Because there's no one else like them. No matter how much you hate the band, how much you claim to be a hipster who only likes bands that no one else listens to, the fact remains that GN'R has released some of the most iconic songs of all time, and people wanna see the band!

Oh it absolutely is written to get a reaction....but aren't we giving it what it wants if we do anything other than shrug our shoulders at it?

I feel a bit like people get so angry if people think differently to them now, that they can't even tolerate those thoughts existing. It's an opinion thing- I'm fine if this guy doesn't like GNR. I may qell not like a lot of the stuff he does!

I mean, goodness knows why I'm sort-of defending this article! Playing devil's advocate a bit I think, as people's reactions to it seem worryingly extreme.

To elaborate further on the article, It's typical hipster douchebag stuff.  Title may has well been ' I hate GnR .'

It is one thing to be critical of the band, but to slam them with almost every sentence in a lengthy article? (The writer does appreciate how good they are live , sort of.)  Not well written and has a decent amount of inaccuracies.

That’s just an opinion piece.  Just go with the saying opinions are like assholes everyone has one.  I just love that November Rain might sound like it has a full orchestra but most that was done with synth. No that’s was impressive for the time it was done.

He will be at the show even if he says he won’t.  Maybe his opinion will change with his press pass getting him front row probably.  Maybe Jarmo, if here, can get a good picture of him singing along just Incase he tries to say it was not a good show.

What go me was the d-bag claimed to be a Replacements fan, noting that Axl "stole" Tommy from the band. Yeah, the Replacements broke up fucking years earlier. Idiot.

I guess his logic is that if Tommy had been available, the Replacements would've reunited years earlier than they did.  hihi

This type of concert reminds me of what was it in NY the Governors Ball or something a few years back forgive me if I am butchering what the concert was called but definitely not your hard rock type of festival. Would be very interested in seeing the type of reaction they get. Even if no new material is played its always good to see the type of chemistry they have going for them on display.

No, I did not laugh but this almost made me cry. This, of course, has nothing to do with real journalism but why are these pieces published. It's not even a click-biting title.

This same could have been said in a few sentences but this is the world we live in. Just publish rubbish and people will read it and post it on social media. I don't know the magazine (vaguely familiar name) and the writer's boss will be very happy because, as mentioned, the reaction.

My feedback to them is that write a real click-baiting title or real journalism. Don't write this in-between stupidness. In this case nothing was done well or correctly Cry

You're absolutely right. It's like somebody saying they hate the taste of shrimp and losing your mind because "BUT I LOVE SHRIMP!!!"

Also, I think it's pretty clear that a lot of the article is tongue in cheek hyperbole. It doesn't exactly make for an interesting article to give a balanced and nuanced opinion on a band. It would also be pretty short if he just said "Eh, they're not my cup of tea."

Also someone who isn't a fan or isn't familiar with present day GNR will likely have a preconceived notion of them shattered when they actually see and hear them play. I think this type of crowd would appreciate the extended jams of the classic songs.  (Rocket Queen for example)

Really? Bores the living shit out of me. Reminds me of lift music!

They're the Beatles mixed with Pink Floyd. Sounds like you're the boring one here...

....and there lies the problem for me! They sound EXACTLY like the Beatles mixed with Pink Floyd, which to me is just something from the past now. if I wanted to listen to the Beatles or Pink Floyd, I'd do just that- I'd rather hear new acts doing something a bit more original. I'm not sure how it qualifies as 'boring' to want that from new music?

Is there something wrong with sounding like they're from the golden era of music? It's not like they're Greta Van Fleet literally aping old artists and having no inspiration. Their songwriting is on the level of those legendary old bands and they absolutely have their own sound. Nothing by them actually sounds like a Beatles or PF song whatsoever.

Guns N Roses was often accused of sounding just like Aerosmith mixed with AC/DC, and their sound was "something from the past" when they came out. What matters is the songwriting, and Tame Impala are brilliant at that just like GNR. Not to mention their sublime use of effects. I can only assume you have never actually listened to them on quality speakers or headphones.

Pretty cool song...does have a Syd Barrett era Floyd feel to it.

Either way Friday is ridiculous...Thom Yorke then Jack White then Tame Impala then Guns.  Shocked

Now if we could somehow get Yorke to play some Radiohead songs and White to play some White Stripes, it would really be on.  hihi

There's nothing wrong with "sounding like the golden era of music", if you want that no. There are probably people who want all their music to sound like Bill Haley and The Comets as they probably view that as "the golden era of music".  I'd rather something sound fresh and original, and like it was made in 2019. I see little difference between Greta Van Fleet and Tame Impala really - they're both new bands trying to imitate the past. Only difference is that you don't like Greta Van Fleet.

That's a fairly arrogant and patronising approach to someone that says they find something boring.: " I can only assume you have never actually listened to them on quality speakers or headphones". You assume very wrong - I've heard them through the speakers of a top level recording studio. Still find them dull and boring.

You know, it's ok for people to have different opinions to you right, and find something you like boring? It doesn't make them wrong.

Again, literally all of the same things apply to Guns and you apparently like them. Or do you want the new album to "sound like it was made in 2019" and have no guitars, a verse by Nicki Minaj and a trap beat?

Being influenced by the past has no bearing on whether the songs are fresh and original. That is precisely the difference between them and GVF. I also like Alabama Shakes, who are influenced by artists of Bill Haley's era, even though I don't listen to anything of that era. Judging music on what it's influenced by is just myopic and prejudicial. Hell, I don't even much care for Aerosmith and yet I love Guns.

And it's fairly arrogant and patronizing to call them "elevator music". It's a practical response to assume you may have only heard them on computer speakers or something because that would produce low quality elevator tonality. Because otherwise, it would just be an asinine statement about an artist who goes to great lengths to create exquisite, hi-fi soundscapes. I guess I shouldn't have given you the benefit of the doubt...

Sure, and if somebody tells you Guns are a bunch of hair metal wankers you'd say "that's an insightful take, good sir"...

I think we have to distinguish between all these bands.

First of all, What they said about guns in the past was  wrong ( i think they said that in order to diminish the breakout of the band). They didn't sound like another band, obviously they played a kind of music (hard rock) that they didn't invented. But they didn't sound like aerosmith, led zeppelin, rolling stones etc . They had their sound, which was a meltin pot of their personal musical influences. Axl rose had that nazareth lead singer style with a lyricism that was almost too much for a hard rock band. Slash was a kind of raw gary moore, not blues not metal not hard rock but oll of these put togheter. Duff was the guy who had the punk vibe. Izzy was the classic rock n roll rythm guitar who wrote songs in that style. Steven was..steven. They didn't sound like another band & that's one of the reasons they had the succes they had.

Greta Van Fleet are Led Zeppelin 2.0 (without the quality of led zep songs), nothin' more than that : singer sounds and acts like robert plant, lead guitar plays and moves like jimi page, riffs are cut & copy of any led zeppelin song, they even dress like they are in the seventies. I mean they won't last for long if they don't find their own sound/ style

Tame impala is all another thing again, for what i've listen to up to now, cause i didn't know the band. They surely lack originality in terms of  (60's) sound and style ,  but they don't sound like a particular band,  u can hear "influences" here and there but that's it.

Surely i can appreciate tame impala more than gvf

It's called 'differing opinions' - something you seem to have a very big problem with. Tame Impala sound like elevator music to me - to you obviously not. That's absolutely fine.

"It would just be an asinine statement about an artist who goes to great lengths to create exquisite, hi-fi soundscapes" - yeah in YOUR VIEW. Again, that's fine, but you really do need to accept that there are people out there who find Tame Impala boring. They're not wrong, or right. They just find them boring. People like different things you know?

As for the GNR thing- yeah I'm hoping they do push their sound on, obviously. I don't want to hear Appetite part 2. Chinese Democracy pushed them on massively, and doesn't sound like anything else. I hope they can do something again.
