Title: David Bowie
Post by: Malcolm on July 09, 2004, 09:40:46 AM
Musician David Bowie underwent an emergency angioplasty to open a blocked heart artery in Germany and is recuperating, his spokesman said Friday.

Doctors discovered the blockage after the 57-year-old Bowie sought treatment after performing in the German town of Scheesel on June 25, according to the spokesman, Julian Stockton.

A pinched nerve was initially cited as the cause of shoulder pain that forced Bowie to shorten a June 23 performance in Prague and eventually to cancel the remainder of a European tour.

Stockton did not specify the date of the procedure but said it was after the June 25 show. Bowie left the clinic in Hamburg, Germany early this week and is now with his family in New York.

Stockton quoted Bowie as saying, "Can't wait to be fully recovered and get back to work again. I tell you what, though, I won't be writing a song about this one."

The British Bowie, who was born David Jones , gained stardom with his groundbreaking 1972 album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust," following it up with albums including "Young Americans" a few years later and "Let's Dance" in 1983, another huge seller. His latest album "Reality" was the centerpiece of his tour.

He is married to the supermodel Iman.

Yeh i heard this news today myself.  I am a huge Bowie fan Love the guy to bits.  He always seems so unstoppable, with his musical out-put and touring, his energy is boundless - he  puts people half his age to shame.

Imagine a world were David Bowie never existed, that seems such a boring place.  Get well soon DB!

I like how they gave a quick biog to hide the fact they haven't got much of a story.

The stupid old cunt should retire if he can't handle it, stop dragging it out old man.

Show some fucking respect!  He is 57 just done 100+ dates has had 2 albums out in the past 2 years - great fucking albums I may add.

His contribution to music is fucking limitless.  No other artist has put out the volume of work he has with such consistant quality.

You do half of what he has achieved first, then come back  and start your insults.

To say his songs are quality, is nothing but an opinion. I don't share your opinion. I have the opinion that he's a stupid old man.

Jesus, if he can't stand on stage less than a 6th of a year, you'd think he'd give it up.

And how long has Axl stood on stage for the past 10 + years?

Not digging at Axl but my point is Bowie has worked almost non stop for 40 years.  You dont have to like his music or him even -  to see that and show some respect at a sensitive time/issue.

Er..u picked a strange time to have a go at him - he almost died

I'm not a massive fan of his music but i admire his drive - at 57 he's allowed to have a few health problems

And the reason he doesn't just give up is because he loves what he does and millions love him for it.....

If  a member of  Electric Frankenstein or Cathedral or the Dangerfields had a health problem would u hurl abuse at them and tell them to retire?

Saw him at the Isle of Wight festival and it was easily one of the best shows I've ever been to, his voice hasn't lost it and he performs fantastically, he was much better than 90% of the shit bands that performed that weekend.

Saw him at a festival in Finland less than a month ago, and agree 100% with what you said. Rarely are you left with such a good feeling after a gig.

Yeah Bowie respects his fans and loves them, that is why he is still out and about. Most performers like to sit back and relax with their money. Bowie atleast gives the fans what they want. If the fans didnt want a huge bowie tour how come its selling quite well.

Get well Bowie.

Damn, should prolly visit  threads when they are more...up-to-date.:)
It's great  to know db's feeling better again, his heart condition didn't seem to hold him in the bed for too long:)
Touring apparently is over for a while tho..

I saw Bowie's  last full-lenght reality gig at the end of June in Provinssi Rock, Finland. And goddamn how it blew me away!

Bowie had approximately gazillion times more stage energy and attitude than anything else I've seen during this summer. Possibly the most impressive gig I have ever seen, even. His voice was in great shape and you could see the backing band has been there for years. Chemistry between them and Bowie worked really well.

It's a shame Bowie's music nowadays is miles away from even trying to be experimental or exiting. It's fun to listen though. But just that. There hasn't been anything truly interesting in the air since 1. Outside....Wich btw  is an extremely underrated album! It should be regognized as  one of the milestones of mid 90's industrial boom.
Then again, pretty much everything Bowie did during 1970 and 1981 is absolutely amazing. I just can't listen Low, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane enough! Amazing stuff, amazing!!

Boy, that misfit guy sure seems like a class-A asshole.  *Flips misfit off!*

Don't start off with a Greatest Hits box, try an studio original. I recommend Ziggy Stardust ( I'm sure Random Would agree with me on that one  :) ) There's not one weak song in there. My fav are Starman, Lady Stardust, Soul Love, Ziggy Stardust...

.also, if I were to get an album, which one (which is his "best")?

Don't touch collections! It's cheating:D
(I will never tell anyone that my 1st Bowie album ever was Singles colelction. Never!Hahahaha!!)

My personal fav is Aladdin Sane, the follow up of Ziggy Stardust.
Even though  Bowie introduced new alter ego/imago he  really didn't uh, reinvent himself at this point. In Aladdin, Bowie is still pretty much the same songwriter who wrote Ziggy Stardust.
Aladdin Sane  is alot more..um, mature and Art-popesqe than  it's prequel though.

The title Track, Time and Cracked Actor never leave from my playlist.
Lots of Piano.Absolutely amazing piano.Occasionally strangley chaotic and haunting piano that delivers this "who ever wrote this is not well at all!" -type of a feeling.Great stuff.
Time is pretty great example of Bowie's talent as a singer. Manner he manages to  carry the middle part of it...um.There are no words. One of those songs where you'd like the lyrics even if you didn't understand word of english.
Cracked Actor must be the most rockety rolly song by db. Well, that and Sufragette City,

In a strange parrel universe where Aladdin Sane doesn't exist at all, my fav Bowie album is Low.
Low comes in  2 parts, pretty much.
First 4 or so  songs are guitar driven rocking pop written by Bowie who was experiemnting with whole lot of all sorts of chrazy chemicals that made his head all oozy.
After that, things start getting more and more experimental, instrumental, gloomy and ,industrial.
The peak of the avant garde- part IMO  is Warszawa. It's this amazingly fuckin dark wordless scream of a portrayal of this depressing commie town.
It's fortunate cold war exsted

In the light of Low, it's pretty irrational and ironic that when Bowie made his attempt to break through again via "commercial" industrial-scene during the peak of said music style around mid 90's, it got slammed because, critics said, Bowie was just ripping off Nine Inch Nails, Manson , Ogre and whathaveyas...while Bowie's own, then about 20 year old creations had infact inspired the likes of Trent Reznor and Marilyn Manson quite alo in the first place.
.

Ziggy Stardust has to be a 'classic' fav...highly recommended...I personally loved and still do, Hony Dory and Thin White Duke...Man Who Sold The World is timeless....but seriously...DIAMOND DOGS ;)

I sure would  8)

I also love Scary Monsters, Heroes, and that 80's album which everybody hates, Let's Dance.  From his 'new' stuff, Outside is pretty good.

I might as well confess I was introduced to Bowie's music thanks to Nirvana (when they covered 'The Man Who Sold the World').

Ziggy Stardust is too simple for a Bowie album, but a good one to start with because it's an easy listen. And Bowie-collections are over-all not good because they only capture the "hits", Bowie is an album-artist with many different styles so either you like hardrock and riffing (Man Who Sold The World, Aladdin Sane) or experimental avant-garde (Low, Heroes) you will always find your favourite.

Alladin Sane is another good one.

I am a massive Bowie fan i have seen him 7 times now and love his work.
He is a true genius.  His work is so vast and eclectic you'll have a great time exploring his work :-)

You can find most of his albums at around ?5 each if you look around, bargain!

To start off with i'd recommend Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust  (even those people who don't *get* Bowie tend to like Hunky Dory and Ziggy!).

Then i'd get Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs and Low these are all considered to be amongst his masterpieces

Actually there is a new Bowie Album track Collection out just this week, it has a great example of his album work and it's only ?5 brand new.

And of his post 70's stuff; Scary Monsters, Buddha of Suburbia, Outside, Earthling and Heathen - just fantastic awsome stuff!  Enjoy the trip ;-)

And for a Bowie related album to get look out for Lou Reeds Transformer album which Bowie produced. It has Perfect Day and Walk on the wild side. It oozes coolness.

I have decided that

Scary Monsters is my favorite album by him.

My reasoning? He combines the raw glammy rock n roll of his Ziggy era with the atmospheric synths n slightly depressing atmosphere of the Berlin trilogy.

Thoughts?

Great album,

But I'll forever be hooked on the Hunky Dory - Diamond Dogs stuff.

God I wish Bowie would perform again, I saw photos of him at his son's movie premier and he is definitely showing his age now.  He was amazing on the 04 tour supporting Reality (great album).  I was in NYC when he came out and sung with Ricky Gervais at his comedy show and did Little Fat Man.  Come on Bowie...one more tour!

I wonder if he ever  performs/records again. It has been an eternity since Reality.
If that was his goodbye, atleast he did it with style; it is such a great album, one of his best since Scary Monsters even.
I do miss being able to look forward to new Bowie  album/tour :(

Fun Fact: In October of 1989, Guns N' Roses film a video for the Appetite for Destruction track "It's So Easy" at the Cathouse.
During the shoot, which includes Axl's then-girlfriend Erin Everly decked out in bondage gear, a drunk David Bowie shows up
and proceeds to hit on her, setting Rose off. "That was when David Bowie was in the band Tin Machine," recalled Rachtman
in an interview with Yahoo. "So Axl was running [down the street], yelling, 'I'm gonna kill you, Tin Man!'"
