Title: for singers: which cigarettes are easiest on your voice?
Post by: Wheres Izzy on January 23, 2006, 09:45:00 PM
Hey, I am a smoker and occasionally sing in bands. I have been smoking menthol (newports, marlboro menthols) since I started smoking about four years ago and lately my throat really bothers me when I sing. I was wondering for anyone who smokes and sings if they can recommend any brand that isn't too rough on your voice. Thanks.

??? If your a singer and want to preserve a really strong voice, you shouldn't be smoking in the first place..it's really bad on your vocal chords.

Lightest cigarettes I could recommend would be Native smokes, or Matinee extra milds, but thats only because there like smoking air.

Put a patch on your arm and sing away!

Don't.   Smoke.

And learn how to sing properly.

Yeah, seriously none. If you want to be a singer full stop, you need your voice so make the decision to stop  : ok:

If you don't have the will to stop smoking, move up to a harsher cigarette and do black metal. Don't settle for a compromise!

I think it's safe to say that all cigarettes, even the all-natural ones, are bad for your throat.

These won't hurt your vocals:

The ones with the fewest additives are 'American Spirit' - but they are NOT healthy cigs at all, just a little less additives compared to Marlboros or other well known brands.

'American Spirit' could also help you to smoke less and eventually quit smoking. Worked for me. They taste like shit in the beginning, but once you got used to it (three or four packs), any Marlboro will taste like shit for you. After a while, there's a good chance you might quit because you get away from all the additives and are addicted to sole nicotine only - instead of a few dozen other adictive additives that are in standart cigarettes and tobaccos.

But ALL cigs will hurt your vocals!!

I AM a singer myself and I WAS a chain smoker for a long time. All I can say is: if you love to sing, quit smoking today, your vocals will improve more than you could ever imagine. It's like having a new voice, really.

Good luck!

 :hihi:

I like Rod Stewart's voice. I'm not sure if he smokes, but he does seem to have a smoker's rasp.

avesia, cigars are probably worse than cigarettes when it comes to damaging the vocals. I could be wrong.

no, you're not...they are worse
I was just kidding :hihi:
my advice is: if you want to preserve your voice, don't smoke at all! :peace:
