Please, let's don't turn this thread into a court room.

Let's just talk about his music - it's none of our business if he's pervert.

I admire and respect him enormously as an ARTIST. It's just sad if he's a sick bastard, but let's try to focus on the artistic part of him.

Yes, your honor..

Tell that to the victims and their parents.

Take the word "If" out of that sentence, and you've got yourself a true statement.

Its hard for people to take him seriously, and its even harder to listen to his music. I also like quite a bit of his old stuff, but how can you hear those songs and not think he's talking about kids? Its sick. His music will be forever tainted.

I've never thought of that... what an ugly thought indeed.  Undecided
Maybe because I haven't listened to his music a lot, after the scandal.  But I was a huge fan before that and I've always thought he was talking about Diana Ross with whom he was obsessed.

I havent listened to his stuff either lately. I mean, think about it: What do you think the song P.Y.T. is about? The Way You Make Me Feel? Remember The Time? These are just a few examples, there are many more. I remember Boy George(or was it George Michael?) saying years ago how they had to change their lyrics around a little bit so people wouldnt know they were actually singing about men. Same thing with MJ, but his attraction is kids.

genius and crazy often goes hand in hand. i guess i'm coming from the  other end here, but the man is (was) a fucking genius. The sort of talent that only comes around so often. i don't know if i think he's a child molester. if i had a kid, i wouldn't let him near MJ. but we don't actually know for sure. what i do think is that MJ is very very very fucked up.
and his music is fucking killer.
i just couldn't care less about the context of the music itself. it's about the art, and he's made some of the best records out there. it really is too bad that he's created all this baggage for his masterworks.

Eh, I don't think it really matters what the original motivation for the lyrics were, ESPECIALLY if MJ has never said "oh btw, PYT was actually about Emmanuel Lewis".

Does knowing Rob Halford is gay "change" the way you think about all those awesome Judas Priest songs?  Granted being homosexual is night and day compared to being a suspected child molester, NOBODY thought Halford was gay and metal is a very macho form of music.

great music is great music.

Oh pleases - get off your high horse.  I suppose your craps don't stink either eh??

If a movie kicks ass, an album is awesome or a painting is beautiful I REALLY don't care what the persons personal beliefs are.  EVEN IF MJ was accused of molesting kids, you can't say that suddenly "changes" how good his songs are.  Just b/c mel gibson is a raging anti semite doesn't mean Braveheart and Mad Max are all of a sudden bad movies and I'm not going to watch them....I might think less of each of them as individuals, but its not like I was spending quality time with them anyways.   Its not like I really care if they are bad people or not - I buy their CDs and watch their movies b/c I like their work, not b/c I think they are good/cool people.

I used to think he was pretty cool musically speaking but now I'm afraid I cant think about him without thinking 'perv'.

Sadly, that's my feeling too.  I grew up listening to his songs, and it's hard to walk away from that.

I like his live cover of the Beatles' Come Together.  One of the kids sitting to the right of the stage is none other than Sean Lennon.

Come Together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkcFixZuW4c

I dont know if you are a Soundgarden fan, but if you want to hear a band truly "own" that song and make it their own, check your PM box. Its an excellent quality demo.

not to take this offtopic, but the Soundgarden version rocks. Thanks jameslofton.

back on topic, I was under the impression that most of MJ's biggest hits were the result of his former producer Quincy Jones.  I dont know how many songs he actually wrote himself, probably just stuff like Heal the world.

if thats what you believe then excellent for you.  "Good" is all about perception, its not real, there is no "perfect" to a song.  Since he is almost undoubtedly a child molester the perception of the song changes, for me the song changes from good to a painful listen...its almost amusing to think some people defend his behaviour just because they like a few of his songs.

and as for mel gibson, i dont see him harming anyone, do you?

disassociation from a guilty conscience...does it feel good?

When all is said and done, we're not the only ones

If we separate the artist from the man for a few moments...

music video pioneer - he made music videos THE place to sell records, for better or worse
singer, dancer, songwriter and music composer - when he was on, he was ON; the layering of percussive vocal ticks as backing track under music was a melding of hip-hop, soul and doo-wop, done to pop perfection and imitated infinitely (message to Timberlake: you're not an eighth the man MJ is); oh, and the voice?  incredible
simply the biggest American entertainer, ever - from boyhood to manhood (and beyond)

I wish he'd get back with Quincy Jones, concentrate on songwriting and then head to the studio with Rick Rubin and put out a deep, dark artistic statement.  His career may be as good as over, but a strong epitaph would be a triumph...
