Title: iPod questions & tech support
Post by: liquidvirus on September 01, 2004, 12:02:55 PM
What are your thoughts on Apple's iPod ?
Even though I own one, I feel it's a pretty shamelessly hyped product.
Its supports very few formats and doesn't have many other features as well

The Rio Karma is a great alternative to the iPod.

What are your thoughts ?

I haven't used a Rio Karma, and I don't own an iPod, but my roommate has an iPod, and I've seen several other handheld digital audio devices.  The iPod is by far the best as far as interface and overall design.  Sure, it's hyped, but I don't see what's bad about it?

I don't have a problem with a company only supporting their proprietary formats (I think it supports mp3s anyway).

i read in the newspaper a while ago that the ipod's recharchable battery only has a set life of about 1 and a half years. After that you need to get it replaced which costs more than the ipod itself so you just have to buy another ipod.

have they fixed this problem yet?

No idea, but that's pretty shitty if that's the case.  My roomate has had his iPod for at least a year now and never had any problems.

I love the Ipod yeah it doesn't support a lot of formats but if all you want is a music player their isn't anything better on the market tight now than the Ipod.

http://ipodsdirtysecret.com/message.html

says there that ipod now offer a replacement battery for $99 (i am assuming US).

it was a major problem, sometimes happening to the battery within as little as 3 months. The battery would not last longer than an hour after a full charge. but still, for a battery to fail like that and for them to expect people to get a new ipod instead.

sorry that the site i gave wasn't exactly, professional or anything.

but yeah i couldnt find the newspaper article (it was over a year ago) but it was on the front page of the technology section of one of the biggest papers here in australia.

and still not many people know about it.

these guys made a video about it

http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/

i wont be buying an ipod.......i don't care if they offer replacement batteries now........$99 US.......

This is what you want:

 :hihi:

I'd like to get an iPod, it seems like the perfect music player.

I have a Minidisc now. The battery time on it is limited (unless you bring an extra battery pack) and you have to bring discs. So and iPod would be great for me.... Maybe I'll get one when I win on the lottery.  ;)

its like everyone just ignores the little fact of the battery. shouldn't action be taken against them for lying. replacement batteries my ass i dont see the need for that in other music players.

there are better things than the ipod.

I?m planning on buying one but I have a question:

How do you charge the battery, I mean, do you have to buy a dock to do so or can you do it with the USB or FireWire...how does it work?

Title: Re: iPod questions & tech support
Post by: Timothy on June 08, 2005, 08:17:10 PM
It comes with a charger that you plug into the wall.

Or if you are using a Mac and connect it to it it will charge it's self that way.

I think it receives charge when you plug it into a PC too...? From personal experience, but I haven't connected mine to a computer for a couple of months, so maybe my memory is wrong.

Yeah your right ,But only if your computer is Firwire not usb.

It charges with both Firewire and USB2, not USB however.
What a beautiful piece of technology though!

Get yourself a docking station as well and also an Itrip so you can play all your MP3's through a stereo. i picked one up for ?7.99( the itrip that is, not the pod itself)

please don't buy an ipod
it's 8 years old technology
it's just a trend
it's EXPENSIVE
their are hundreds of other mp3 player that are far less expensive and much more advanced

seriously. people have to stop with ipods. i see like 40 a day in paris.  i don't get it. it came out 8 years ago, and now people are just buying because of the commercial and marketing effort .....

I don't think people care about "old technology", they want an mp3 player that plays music and looks cool.

I didn't know the ones that came out eight years ago had color displays... I guess by your logic, nobody should buy Volkswagen Golf because it was introduced in the 1970s?

by y logic people shouldnt be sheep following the trend of marketing process
ipods are just simple mp3 player. their are 1000s of other mp3 player taht looks as cool, and are way better (in technology)
but people see ipod's ads and buy them.
simple.

ipod really did not evolve that much in 8 years (screen colors ? how useful ...)
and apple almost never lower their prices ....

but i have to admit that the fact that   E V E R Y B O D Y   has an ipod here in paris makes me sick :)

I don't know much about this sorta stuff, but I do know I bought a different kind of mp3 player first, and it was a total fuck-up. It wasn't as small or light, and the software included wouldn't work much of the time. I took it back to the shop and got an ipod instead, and I don't regret it at all. Perhaps if I was more clued-up about mp3 players, I'd feel differently, but to me ipods seem a good deal.

well i guess thats why everybody buys ipods (even if it's damn expensive)
for the majority of non-nerds (id' say) IPOD is the only choice out there.

it's the MASS product by exelence.
their ads reflect that : they don't talk about technology, they're not like " ipod is good because ...."
it's just
here is IPOD. don't think . just BUY.

:) and i hate it :)

Apple are smart enough not to lower prices on something that sells, and sells a lot!

You don't seem to realize that iPod is a whole family of players, it's just not one player. There's the iPod Shuffle, iPod Mini and then the "regular" iPods as well as the iPod Photo with the color display.

Now, did iPod Shuffle exist eight years ago?

Your problem seems to be the fact that Apple went from being the brand of geeks into being the brand for a majority of people who own an mp3 player.

I guess you hate the fact that they started offering iPods that work with PCs......  :hihi:

I think many people buy them, not only because it's "cool", but also because it's a known brand. Not too many people know of Creative, Rio, iAudio, Archos etc.

edit: ipods stayed pretty expensive all along these years

You don't seem to realize that iPod is a whole family of players, it's just not one player. There's the iPod Shuffle, iPod Mini and then the "regular" iPods as well as the iPod Photo with the color display.
ipod products are globally the same thing (mini, regular, photo) nothing compared to what the competitors have (video, recording, games ...)

Now, did iPod Shuffle exist eight years ago?
they did that because cheap "usb key" mp3 player started it and became a hit. they just went "late" on this market. but can't compete (the very cheap price of "usb key" mp3 players"

Your problem seems to be the fact that Apple went from being the brand of geeks into being the brand for a majority of people who own an mp3 player.

well wel. i dunno i just don't like ipods :) i like my nintendo ds :)

well judging by the above we really cant take you as a nerd, as you dont seem to understand how to post a reply to quotes without posting in them.... funny I think.

The old saying here is "if it aint broke dont fix it" well I think that apple has been following that rather well. From a company that "requires" money... yes they dont work for free, they seem to be really on the ball. As with all corporations if something is a hit they will never lower the price. Im actually happy that Apple is starting to move more into the mainstream with everything, I far prefer them to any other company that i have dealt with.

The tech maybe 8 years old for that of an IPod, but how old is solid state memory tech? seems that its older then 8 yrs... the main reason that usb key players are so cheap is because it is based on a tech that has been coming down in cost for the past 20yrs... so what if you went to 8yr price drop on that tech id be able to buy a car for the cost of a 1 gig key. the Tech is simple it works great, very few manufaturing flaws.....seen far to many "keys" die when droped.... ipds... well they seem to keep ticking now dont they? My only regret is that no one is making a IPod after market case that is in CADPAT TW or AR with light displine usage... id love to be able to use a IPod on patrol when i gets in the army... would be so nice.

oh and i must ask.... how old is the tech that is being used to make your DS which you seem to love so much?

Just like PCs....

How often do you wonder about how the CPU in your PC works and buy a PC based on that? Or do you buy one because it actually does what you want it to do (for example run Photoshop)?

Dot,

The IPOD will not play files directly onto your stereo, but you can buy an accessory called an ITRIP that fits into the headphone socket.

It then transmits a Radio signal, so you can tune your Radio in to directly interlink with your Ipod.

Brilliant for if your at a mates house, switch on your mates  stereo, tune into the ipod frequency you have selected and bam...theres your mp3's!

i have to agree this time with WAT-EVER, i'm totally buggin , i see people buying Ipods and they think its the collest best thing , but i think its not , its very expensive and it does nothing outstanding , there are better mp3 players , i have to say that the Ipod its not bad but people dont seem to realize that they have other options and products to choose they just buy an Ipod , so well job made by Apple.

in the nintendo thing , you seem to like inovation and improvment in your gadgets and you choose nintendo? i think nintendo its a very good company but its really losing market due to his norrow mind in videogames , its funny because they keep claiming that they are the ones that inovate all the time , but they inovate in things that people dont seem to like very much (for example if you move the DS the stuff in the screen moves , like with the game of yoshi , its cool but it last 5 minutes and then its boring),  they didnt put internet option on the gamecube they didnt put dvd options , they just keep doing mario 421 and mario party 26. lets see what they do with the revolution.

Of course Apple has done a very very very good job in promoting their product..that?s a huge reason for their commercial succes, however, peopel buy the Ipod because Apple has been around in the computer/technology business for quite a while, so that makes them a brand you can trust......

There might be other better MP3 players, but let?s face it, few people like the unknown brands. BTW, you say there are better MP3s, which ones?

They also say that they cost  less . but for the sixe of the hard drive o0n the Ipod I have only notice around at the most a $30 price diffrents.

Ditch the fucking IPod and go for the Sony NE-701 player, what adv. does it have over the IPod?:
1) Cheaper by abt. $50
2) Flash memory based (1GB)
3) Battery life of upto 80 hrs. on a single NiCd battery!
4) Recharge by USB ( a 3min recharge lasts for upto 3hrs. of playback).
5) Ultra cool lookin!

Ditch the fucking IPod and go for the Sony NE-701 player, what adv. does it have over the IPod?:
1) Cheaper by abt. $50
2) Flash memory based (1GB)

Well, of course it's gonna be cheaper if it's "only" 1Gb.....

True, but 1GB is enough for most people... 4GB is overkill, unless ur using it as a portable hard drive, or insist on carrying ur entire music collection with u all the time...

hmmm not bad considering that im not int he states, and i know tonnes of people in teh  CF and though you are not allowed to do it, yo0u can do it so long as you only use one ear plug...... that is if you are not using a headset... IE. not as a veh crewman or commander.. nor as a section leader on foot..... they mostly have ipods... either shuffles or minis... and a few use teh keys... but have or are planning to move to an Ipod cause they have totaled their keys at least once and those using the pods have not and have had them londer.... and they have all painted their cases a flat green (nonreflective) but would like a nice CADPAT pouch with molle on it to jsut alice them to the TV (tac vest) for teh headphones they use the cammo hydration system straw cover to hide the plain white cords.... works nice.... keeps it ran nice for a existing pouch.... too bad they mostly use it in a ammo pouch lol

So if some nice aftermarket maker is reading this... it would be real nice if ya could make one for us ;)

as for teh light disp. if the pouch was water proof and when you lifted teh lid a folding mesh would come up it would be good too.. easy to check your song list.. LOL

I have the Creative Zen 20GB, bought it for about ?160...its fantastic, ive had no problems with it and i do recommend it,

anyone who buys sony is off their heads...you usually have to use their software which is as buggy as hell...and songs are stored in sonys own format and not mp3...

That "dirty little secret" is old BS. You CAN replace the battery in the iPod. There are dozens of manufacturers that offer battery replacement?
Just today a new offer popped up:

"FastMac has announced a new iPod battery upgrade that offers up to 70% more capacity than the original battery and up to 7.5 times as many charge cycles, according to the company. ?This is accomplished through the use of patented nanoparticle technology code-named ?TruePower,? which significantly slows the degradation of the battery,? says FastMac.

The upgrade is available for 1G/2G iPods ($39.95) and 3G iPods ($29.95), and comes with a 2-year warranty. The company said necessary tools and installation instructions are included. FastMac also offers an iPod upgrade service for an additional $49.95, which includes prepaid shipping and professional installation."

From what they're saying, it's a pretty small % of the screens that actually have the issue.

Something about a vendor quality issue?  Sounds like the vendor producing their screens fucked up.

Like most of the time. The supplier has quality issues and Apple gets the reputation.

It's the same thing with everything else, cars, mobile phones etc etc.

I don't really care about iPods. I'm happy with my Sony ATRAC/ MP3 player (which is smaller than iPods, just a bit smaller than a lighter). 500 songs for 50 hrs. battery time is enough for me.

My friend had a karma.  His biggest bitches about it were the power switch (too easy to turn off, and set on the top of the unit), the flaky software, and, eventually, the crappy HD (which faiiled....was replaced...and then failed AGAIN).

I got the iPod shuffle from the folks for Christmas and I fuckin' love it. It has a GB of memory so I can store anwhere from 250-275 songs on it, not to mention the sound quality is unreal and it's light as a feather. The only thing Im pissed about is the black earmuff things they give you for the headphones: they fucking fall off so easily!! They only give you 4 and Ive lost all them already..can you buy replacements anywhere because the earpieces themselves aren't the cumfiest without the black foam things.

LOL, it's true... my Dad got the shuffle and I stole two of his earmuffs just in case.  I thought that would last me for a long time.  I lost mine within a couple of days of that and the ones I have on now keep falling off, luckily I've managed to find them each time though.  I asked my sister and she said she lost hers easily and doesn't bother to wear them anymore.  It sucks because I really like the earphones besides that...

Oh, and a note for anyone looking at the "BOSE soundock" or whatever it is.... RIP OFF!  You can go buy a cord to connect your Ipod to any stereo, plus this thing boasts "superior sound quality!", a lot of good that's going to do you playing MP3 quality songs off your Ipod.

i got one of them, no problems with it, easy transfering of files, not bad battery life, quite sturdy the only down side is that its a little on the heavy side compared to other ipods

  That you make friends with people similar to you.

Seriously though, the problems you had mostly deal with using your computer.  I saw my Dad having trouble getting it to work with iTunes and stuff too.  Maybe I'm a nerd, but I had no trouble getting it to work properly.  The battery life might be an issue, I haven't had mine long enough to complain about that though.  My last MP3 player could hold 20-30 songs so right now this is the greatest thing I own.  I need to find a damn case for it though!

One of the things I really like right now is that I can listen to a handful of CDs I ripped to my ipod on my computer by just plugging it in, so I don't have to keep switching discs (and I guess I can do that on any computer with iTunes).

Ok - Well its not my computer or my computer ability because even the Apple Mac people couldnt get it working when I took it into them and when I called them.  So figure that one out....

My friend (who dosent even know how to put songs into iTunes just had hers work instantly.  Its the itunes 6, it has bugs... everyone knows that.

I got a case it was $27.90 AU and then I had to buy a scratch guard to put over the screen for another $16.70.

Well, I have 90 gigabytes of music on my PC, not including the lossless files. The question is, do I listen to all of them? And the more important question is, do I need all this music on the road with me?

The answer for me is simply NO.

So, my phone will do just fine for the next couple of years.

Yeah, I was talking about 7.9 that I listen to.  I get sick of a song fairly quickly...  so I need a lot of songs and videos to keep me amused ;D...  And I listen to my iPod at school during IT and writing and study times, and when I run and on the bus... so I use it 24/7 almost.

The phone sounds like a good option if you dont feel the need to have MEGA choice. 24/7

BTW - wowah 90 gig, man!  :o

I need some iTunes help... is there anyway to make a RANDOM playlist?!?!

I really like the "Smart Playlists" where you can limit it to specific albums, genres, artists, etc.  The problem is, I set it to pick random songs (and it does), but it ORGANIZES them by artist... so I have a bunch of random songs, but still in alphabetical order.  Can you get around this?

Or is there a way to play random songs through the iPod but limited to an album or genre?  The only thing I can find is the "Shuffle Songs" which includes them all...

You can limit it to a playlist - so make a playlist of all of the songs you would like to play in random, then down the bottom select Source: HipHop   (for example)

Title: Re: iPod questions & tech support

Depending on the iPod you have you may only have about 2 hours worth of battery life for videos... So just keep that in mind if you want to be entertained for a "long" flight.  Music can keep you going a lot longer!

I use "Videora" to convert my files.  I've had a few problems with the audio track seperating from the video somewhere in the middle, but I'm sure it has to do with the specific files I'm converting.  If I convert a file I rip off one of my DVDs it is never an issue.  I have also used "PQ DVD" before which is much faster but, as a demo, it only converts 5-10 minutes max.  This is only good if you are converting music videos, or want to split your video into a bunch of smaller videos (you could put them all in a video playlist and the ipod will play them in succession).  Try doing a Google search for other programs, something better has probably come out since I originally got my iPod.  If you can't find the programs I named I can probably send you the installation files.

ok now you wil have to define crash.... as a crash to me is  a hard lock, and the computer has to be turned off........ now you speak of freezing, so that the system hangs after you attach the ipod?

is that is what you mean how long are we talking about.... 5s 30s 1min 5 min?

if its the 5s dont worry about it...... and stop being a sook
if its 30s most likely too much crap running in the backround causing for slow memory access
if 1min buy more ram and start shuttting down crap in the litle spot by the clock... shutting down crap is good for teh 30s one
if 5 mins.... give me the current system info..... HD type size freespace, OS type and version including updates, amount of ram, ill need to know what your cpu usage is at idle and how much memory you are using.... and your swap file info

if you were to start up the computer then once everything ws loaded up u launched mmmmmmmmmmmmm IE how long would it take to loadthe program tot he screen... not including the tie it would take to launch to your homepage

Title: Re: iPod questions & tech support

when you unplugged pod, did you Eject it first?  If not, that could be why.  Is it new and up to date?  I ask as I've had mine just over a year and have always kept up to date with the upgrades etc.  Had a problem yesterday and took to the Apple store - the guy had to wipe it all and give it a system upgrade. perhaps yours needs the same.

Have you tried restoring factory settings? you can do that manually yourself - its fixed a small prob for me in the past.

or...

If you are close to an Apple store - I'd advise booking in and letting them have a look at it - they will advise for free.  If you still have warranty, you will get a new, free replacement if needs be.

I've learned my lesson regarding unplugging the iPod while it says "Do Not Disconnect"...  Did you try restarting it (holding down the middle and menu button for ten seconds) and then reconnecting it to your computer?

Title: Re: iPod questions & tech support
Post by: zman on February 14, 2007, 09:07:51 AM
if you unplug the Ipod before you disconnect will cause damage to your internal drive and you will then have to send it in ifyou cannot restore. I learned this the hard way and did this after the warranty was up and lost 27.7 gb (4011 songs) of music. The hard thing was I lost ALL of my leaked GnR songs that i did not back up. So now i have to wait for the new album to get the tracks back.

I don't have my ipod with me now, but I believe that you can set the shuffle funtion to "songs," "albums," or "off."  It will either shuffle the songs on a playlist or jump between albums...

Anybody with good knowledge of Ipods willing to point me in the right direction of a good, well priced one.  See the thing is i must be one of the few people my age who doesn't even know much about them, i know the basis, small little music player, put music from your computer onto the hardrive and they can vary in space, battery power etc. right?  Last time i had a portable music player of any sorts it was a CD player walkman thingy or whatever they were called and that broke like 3 years since, so i've decided to get into the modern age, now being from the UK i dont want linkage to any sites from abroad with high postage like, just something, UK based, which is value for money, and a little explanation of how they work and anything i should know, kind of like an idiots guide to an Ipod would be cool, cheers ;)

I use to hate on Ipods but they are easily the best music player.

The ON THE GO playlists u can make are awesome, U don't have to be on the computer to make the playlist. Just click a song hold the middle button and custom a playlist on the go.

I love my 8 gig and Im gonna buy an 80 gig Ipod Classic for my car. : ok:

U can get a 2 Gig Ipod Nano for about 120 bucks or so on www.amazon.com

great deal, about 500 songs or so.
