Title: "Greatest Hits" on Sam Goody upcoming releases list
Post by: grog mug on September 30, 2004, 08:14:18 PM
I just came back from my local Louisville, KY Sam Goody store with some weird news to share, but I guess anything that happens in the GN'R world doesn't make any sense anyway.  I go in Sam Goody every couple of months to ask about any new GN'R news, so they took out the list of upcoming releases and there it was Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits.  I talked to the lady that showed me the chart and she knew about Axl trying to prevent the release of the March 23 release, and told me "this is going to be AXL'S GN'R version of the Greatest Hits, not the record company's."  Those were her exact words, so I'm guessing we might see ANOTHER Greatest Hits album, before any signs of new singles or Chinese Democracy.

This must be a mistake.... How the h*** does she knows... Its probobly just some mess in her pc data... Im sure its the old GH date that is wrong placed

Exactly my thoughts, but she said it was something "NEW".  She knew about the March release, and this was on the UPCOMING releases for the year.  I hope it's not true, but according to her something with Axl's input is in the works to be released.  Maybe with a new single worked in?

Axl's greatest hits are going to be the songs on Chinese Democracy. Usual something completely crazy in the GNR universe. Always seems to happen on the same day, completely out of nowhere, huh?

Hmmm.. i belive your words, but im not sure i belive her`s. But anyway... Lets pretend Axl is releasing a BONUS cd` for Chinese Democracy, this could be it.. A single could be possible, but i hope its a new song, and not old rerecorded songs:/

Wouldn't it be funny if this was how we found out, this turned out to be Chinese Democracy? I'm not saying it is it, because I wouldn't believe it, but waiting all these years for something huge, and we stumble upon it by accident? Pure Axl.

Well, whether this is true or not, I can almost guarantee that if there is another greatest hits Axl WILL include Estranged on it.

I've heard this rumor somewhere before and just ignored it.  I went in Sam Goody out of curiousity and saw the Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits on upcoming releases myself, which is not the one from March 23 but a NEW one like I said before.  I didn't believe it so the girl actually told me that Axl did not want the Greatest Hits released and since it was against his will he's going to release his own version with his Guns N' Roses, which means songs like Estranged, Mr. Brownstown, Nightrain possibly.....Or it could mean the same songs with a few new tracks ALL recorded by the new band.

that'd be friggin awsome.. i dont care if its "getting money from fans w/ just old material" its friggin awsome that axl wants to release a greatest hits of his own.. *if this is true that is*

I think the new version recorded by the new band is just wishful thinking on my part.  I remember around a year ago we were hearing the rumors of GN'R rehearsing the Illusion tracks, so I figured there could be some truth to this Sam Goody rumor I came across.

I don't know if you guys remember or not, but back when the Illusions were about to be released, under 'the scheduled albums list' the Illusions were listed as Guns N' Roses: Greatest Hits (back in 91'). Also, there can't be a Greatest Hits 2.0, all of GN'R's hits have already been covered in the original Greatest Hits album. The only other way I see it is that album being a "Best Of". So I believe we have 3 options here:

a.) Axl is releasing a 'Best Of' album soon. (which would be redundant)
b.) This is really Chinese Democracy in disguise. (or a single)
c.) This is absolutely nothing.

Which option do you think is right?

A few things... there was a post on mygnr.com several weeks ago where a poster said they heard a radio station say that "A band that has recently released a Greatest Hits is to put out another one..." (or words to those effect) but nobody knew what the band in question was. Also, if this new information is true, how will it be marketed so soon after the last one? Will Geffen still put it out? Will it be labled "special edition" or something? I just can't imagine it will be promoted by the same record company.

Also, regarding the '91 situation.... how did anybody believe that when GN'R only had about 5 or 6 singles out up to that time?!

Assuming that this is another greatest hits album/best of album/whatever the fuck that isn't new material album:

On the one hand, the Greatest Hits was a terrible track listing and a travesty ...

On the other hand, how much fucking bullshit must we wade through before we get a new album?

Right now I'm feeling the second a lot more than the first, as much as I am trying to feel the first more than the second.

I would be interested in Axl and his new band playing the hits, It's not CD, but it would be better then most new cds that come out.

I remember the same discussion from GNR fans in 91.  If Axl had a tentative release for CD, I believe he would do the same thing as 91, label it Greatest Hits.  It's not like he isn't secretive or anything.

I don't think its likely that they could successfully release something with the new band playing the old songs, considering the current lawsuit.  I have to assume Duff and Slash would block it immediately, until the case is settled.  Unless that's why they filed the lawsuit in the first place.

Also, wasn't there a rumor on this board about a month or so ago where someone said they were told at a music store that there was a self titled Guns N' Roses album due to be released?  I can't find it now, but it had to be on this board because this is the only one I read.

Hmmm...

If it isn't c.) then it must be b.) - The Greatest Hits a collection of GN'R singles, i really can't imagine for one minute there could be a Greatest Hits 2, it would surely contain some tracks from the The Greatest hits already released (and that would make no sense).

...and, another way of looking at it is, if there is anything coming out from GN'R, it's got to be new material  : ok:

Might be 'Best of'? No TSI tracks  8) + estranged, used to love her, it's so easy, mr. brownstone, Pretty tied up, rocket queen, garden of eden ??? and even old unreleased track or demo, like heartbreak hotel

I don't think A is true. I just don't think Axl would do this as he is so wrapped up in Chinese Democracy - and besides if he is releasing an album around this time he won't want another GNR product to compete with.

Unless of course it has something to do with the court case as has been previously commented upon.

I hope its B, but realistically its gotta be C!

I've always thought we'd see some sort of "code name" for a tentative album release. If they put up there, a specific time for a specific title, the secret would be out. I'm sure Axl will want to drop an atomic bomb with this one. I definitely don't see a GH v.2, unless it's got new/rerecorded material on it, but my guess is that the next Guns N' Roses cd out will be 'Chinese Democracy', no rarities colection, no "Best Of", etc.

Come on people - get real here. Die-hard obsessed GnR fans, mods who have connections . . . can't find ANYTHING out about the new album, but some checkstand girl is going to know that information? She may have a tentative release date for an album, but what - Axl's mangement crew called her up and said 'Axl wasn't happy with the first Greatest Hits album, so he's putting out his own version of it. We're not telling anybody but a few select cashiers at a few select music stores."

She assumed that it's Axl's version whatever that means.? I have no idea why it was listed for upcoming releases, but it clearly stated "Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits".? On the CD release date rumor thread back in July, someone says their friend was at a Sam Goody and was asked to preorder GNR's upcoming self - titled album, due in November

So either both Booker Floyd (from the CD release date thread) and Grog mug are posting BS stories, or two different people have heard similar info from 2 different Sam Goody stores.

I'm not saying this guarantees that either or both stories are true, but it makes me think something might be going on.  Although why only Sam Goody stores would have this information and not any other stores makes no sense to me.  But has anybody else done what Grog Mug did, and just walked in and asked somewhere, for example, like Tower?

If anybody lives in Kentucky, please go in to the Sam Goody store in the Oxmoor Mall.  They will tell and show you the same thing.   I'm going to go there tomorrow and ask them what it really means and talk to the head manager to see if he know's whats up.  Like I said your guess is as good as mine.  Not looking for attention here, just sharing something I've been told by simply asking a record store if anything is scheduled or coming out.

Has anyone stopped to think that if this really does come to fruition (and I think Axl is looney enough to go through with releasing a Greatest Hits II) that we would officially have LESS released CDs (If Live Era counted as two) that contain original material than CDs that do not?

Appetite + Lies + UYI I + UYI II = 4

TSI + Live Era Disc 1 + Live Era Disc 2 + GH + GH II = 5

I think this album the GHs II was chin dem and was to be released in Nov but the album got pushed back to Feb. Tommy And Diz both said the planned release date was Nov but that apparely has fallen through. I dont think there is another GHs album, it was IMO just a code name for CD so it wont leak out.

She assumed that it's Axl's version whatever that means

that makes sense
doesn't sound like he's saying she claimed to KNOW anything
other than there being an upcoming release listed as "Greatest Hits"
and she knows the GH already came out
and she know's Axl protested it
so this is how she's rationalizing it

what is it?
who knows!?  No one!  :P
but could it be that CD has a different name? and they are keeping it secret?

i don't think there will be a 2nd GHalbum, but didn't axl say that they're rerecorded 11tracks from A4D plus patience and they want to release it as a bonus disc for CD?
i mean, this would go thru as a GH, doesn't it? so this release info combined with the '91 incident - were there was also a GH listes to be turned out as UYI1/2 - "could be" something. AND, it wouldn't even be a lie.

anyways, this is total speculation, nothing more. but i kinda like it to put some things together into a lil conspiracy.

Im not even going to get my hopes up saying to myself that this may be Chinese Democracy. I seriously doubt there is a re-recorded alternate version of the Greatest Hits album by the new plan scheduled to be released. Its interesting none the less but I think the best thing to do would be for some of us to visit various record stores other then Sam Goody and browse through the upcoming release catalogue. If the GnR name surfaces in multiple lists then there could be something brewing :-\

Grog mog,

Thanks for this info.? If it turns out to be bullshit, no harm done because we are all expecting to hear a release date soon anyway.

If this is a GH2, did Axl lose out on money associated with GH1?? So, maybe he is releasing something to piss off the record company knowing that this will sell far as well as GH did and Axl gets the money? ???

I hope it's CD too.? But just wait and see, I guess and we are all novices at that : ok:

edited to explain novice:  taken as a devotion to something such as GN'R (figured I'd explain this as there is more than one meaning for it) ;D

About a year ago in Kerrang! Magazine they printed something along the lines of Axl was re-recording AFD to re place the original version so the old band mates could no longer benefit from the sales of AFD. How stupid is that?

Now Welcome to the Jungle is to appear in the video game: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and it will be the original recording. So I guess that blows that rumour out of the water. Wouldn?t have made more sense to use Welcome to the Jungle as recorded by the new line up?

Then Kerrang! said Lies was to re-released without One in a Million, did that ever happen?

...and now all this talk of a Greatest Hits II - i don't think so? ;)

-

Although i do like the idea of a bonus AFD (recorded with new band)  appearing along with CD  : ok:
...or maybe it might simply be a bonus disc with tracks from AFD and UYI and UYI II  :peace:

i dont know how music stores work but couldnt be that a new album is listed because they are producing more greatest hits cds because they are sold out?

the worst mistake that Axl could do is to release a cd with the new band making songs from the old band , that would make normal people to notice than this is another band and then the name of guns n roses for the new album wouldnt have the same power to sell copys.

First off I would like to say hi as a new member to the board. Ive been reading this site for a while now and im not just trying to be another sticky fingers with a stupid rumor. Today in Sam goodie i asked the girl if Guns had anything new coming out she checked the list and she said GN'R had a new greatest hits cd coming out there is no release date yet though. I read on a post on this site that when gnr released uyi 1+2 they put on release sheets that it was a greatest hits cd. No release date maybe its Chinese Democracy maybe its another greatest hits i don't think that makes sence though. Take it for what its worth. I'm not saying its true I hope it is though.

ok so if they said there was a release listed as 'greatest hits'... being a gnr fan you surley asked what date right? also maybe it's possible the 'greatest hits' album is just being re-issued or whatever...

out of everyone on this board, who gets info on a gnr release and then doesn't bother to post the actuall date? the answer is: someone who is full of shit!

Well for all you doubters, give the guy a break.  He said that there was no release date yet.  He isn't saying CD is coming out, he isn't giving us a date.  All he is doing is saying maybe.  I'm tired of people giving 1 post people shit.  Think about it, a lot of people may hear something about GNR and want to go to a GNR website and share the news, or ask questions.  Therefor, they will be 1 posters and all we do is shoot them down.  Are some 1 post people full of shit?  Yes, but most aren't.

Hey, I think this poster?s no bull. But the girl at Sam goodie might be.

Hmmm... This is not the first time Sam goodie had GNR on their list. Booker reported his friend?s episode among those lines but as "self titled". Was it in August? And several weeks later I saw the other one on this board.
I wonder if they went to the same Sam goodie store and if they all talked to the same girl.

I'm tired of people giving 1 post people shit.? Think about it, a lot of people may hear something about GNR and want to go to a GNR website and share the news, or ask questions.? Therefor, they will be 1 posters and all we do is shoot them down.? Are some 1 post people full of shit?? Yes, but most aren't.?

From an old thread called "greatest hits part II"

I just came back from my local Louisville, KY Sam Goody store with some weird news to share, but I guess anything that happens in the GN'R world doesn't make any sense anyway.? I go in Sam Goody every couple of months to ask about any new GN'R news, so they took out the list of upcoming releases and there it was Guns N' Roses Greatest Hits.? I talked to the lady that showed me the chart and she knew about Axl trying to prevent the release of the March 23 release, and told me "this is going to be AXL'S GN'R version of the Greatest Hits, not the record company's."? Those were her exact words, so I'm guessing we might see ANOTHER Greatest Hits album, before any signs of new singles or Chinese Democracy.?

Similar stories.? Of course the person who started this new thread might have just read the old one and decided have some fun.

Title: "BEST OF" ( NOT Greatest Hits ) could be released?
Post by: RnT on November 15, 2004, 04:23:43 PM
Well
To me, that 2002 tour was not "canceled" at all
I changed my mind
I think that was part of the marketing thing
To make a product sell, they can do whatever they wanted
People are still talking about GNR, if they didn?t make that 2002 tour, GNR? won?t sell that much of the Greatest Hits ( Record Label )

What I?m saying is, "Greatest Hits" is diferent of a "Best Of" ... Greatest Hits you show all the hits, and in a Best Of you show what the band is capable to do, what the band is all about.
That?s why I think Axl wanted to do that tour... and he know that, doing that tour, and then stop and let the GNR members doing they own solo?s work, GNR will be in the spotlight, even with no new material to talk about... giving Axl all the time he wanted
I think the GNR label said "We will release something", and Axl saw that the new GNR album won?t coming out soon that time... so this Greatest Hits thing was "covered" by a tour, that ended with "no oficial words", making midia and people talking: "this time is for real... why start a tour with no album coming out?" and "no, now they?re gone" ... then the Greatest hits come and sell a lot ... GNR ( Axl ) had a Live album ( old GNR - Live Era ) , Greatest Hits ( old GNR -Greatest Hits - ALL THE HITS ) ... THEN a "BEST OF - 2002 GNR Tour" ( New GNR - All the songs Axl wanted to show to GNR fans with the NEW BAND ) and the new CD, Chinese Democracy ( New GNR ).

Again
they can do whatever they want to make a product sell
and if they put a BEST OF now, will sell a lot

I posted the Greatest Hits part II a while back.? Where was your Sam Goody store located?? I think there might be some kind of truth to this, either Chinese Democracy or ANOTHER Greatest Hits.? Just something weird about it, that's all.

The only way this would make any sense at all is if Axl decides to release new material on this "best of". Otherwise noone cares, because its just more identical tracks from AFD or UYL.

Now maybe Axl will release a "best of" with re-recorded tracks with the newest band. That would be interesting to say the least. Just do something!!!!  :o

That would not make sense to release a "best of" 6 months or so after a "Greatest Hits". It would be an awful marketing move.

And I'm sorry but your theory doesn't really make sense. There's no way they did a tour for something related to the GH. No way in hell. And GN'R isn't exactly "in the spotlight" right now. Sure the GH CD sold pretty well the first few weeks/ months, but the hype came down pretty quick. Besides GN'R forums, GN'R isn't really on people's minds right now. That's why they will need a HUGE, GIGANTIC marketing machine. A never-seen-before promotion plan that will put GN'R back in people's minds. And I'm not talking about another tour or GH - or best of. Whenever GN'R is gonna make their next move, we will hear about it. And I'm pretty sure it won't be from some Sam Goody clerk or an obscure music news web site. When it's going to happen, we will all find out pretty much at the same time.

Ever since Axl mentioned the re-recorded tracks in an interview, I wish he'd release them. I'd love to hear those tracks !

What kind of deal did guns originally sign with Geffen? Could this be a way of getting out of the contract, by releasing X amount of CDs. Guns only released 4 albums of original material.

Didnt aerosmith do something similar. They were locked into a contract in which they had to produce X amount of CDs before they could be released. Instead of going through all the legal crap they just put out shedloads of Greatest Hits and Best Ofs in order to make up the numbers.

If this isnt Chinese Democracy then it could well be another greatest hits. Axl may want out, we have been hearing rumours for ages about his relationship with Geffen/Interscope.

Cant someone just call this store up and ask them. Dont know how things work over in the US but in the UK i can just pick my phone up and dial any of the major music shops and ask them.

This is really Chinese Democracy in disguise.

this really wouldnt surprise me, the new star wars trailor was released under a different name to keep it a secret for as long as possible, some cinemas didnt even know that they had the trailor!

they could be oiling them gears up again!

Chinese Democracy in disguise?  I don't think many people (other than members of this board) would listen to it if it was delivered right to their door, or email for that matter.  The last thing GNR needs to do is disguise anything else- in case you forgot, they've been disguising exactly what the fuck happened to the tour.

About two years ago there was a store up north that had CD listed and with a release date. I called to confirm it myself and the guy gave me the same name (CD) and date.

Nothing ever came of it.

So...don't get your hopes up, even if it is on their computer..whatever 'it' is.

Mysteron?

Aerosmith signed with columbia, and did owe Geffen a couple more albums, but that situation is totally different. GnR have been using Geffen's money for the past several years recording this thing. They can't just decide to release a greatest hits to fulfill their contract and walk away with the Chinese Democracy masters.

And Chinese Democracy will not be released or put on a release date list under a code name. I don't know who has been reading too many mystery novels, but my god....the album has been in the works for years. The last thing they need to do is keep the release date "a secret". If it's ready to come out, they're going to do everything they can to get the word out.

I agree. No reason to hide the date after all this wait.

Maybe they won't even tell Axl that CD will be released like it 'happened' with the European tour years ago.

I agree with Lesty: they won't hide Chinese Democracy if it ever comes out.

I think it'll be some kind of weird release process that Axl will come up with.  When that girl told me that Greatest Hits is still on upcoming releases and it's supposed to be Axl's version; I'm sure it's probably either re-recorded past GN'R songs, or CD in disguise.

Chinese Democracy with 10 extra bonus tracks.

10 extra bonus tracks = Axls version of GNR's greatest hits.

According to www.musictap.net......For December 6, Geffen Records plans a Volume 2 for Guns & Roses called Greatest Hits. I like Guns and Roses but is it really possible to have 2 volumes of hits in such a short and under-nourished career? Hmmm.

I've been hearing about this for quite sometime now....supposively another website is posting the same thing I've been seeing.? Axl's version of the Greatest Hits will be next to hit stores instead of Chinese Democracy.?

December 6th, 2002 - Philadelphia, PA @ First Union Center .  Notes: This sold out show was cancelled for "health reasons"

The opening acts played tonight. Mix Master Mike finished his set at about 9:50 and people began getting restless at that point. About 40 minutes later, people were booing. After 11 some people started throwing chairs. At around 11:10 the official announcement that the show had been postponed due to health reasons came out over the PA.

December 6th, 2005 - Chinese Democracy released???

Probably not, but it would be a weird coincidence.
