"Castro almost died," Ch?vez saysCaracas, Friday September 21 , 2007
Convalescent Cuban leader Fidel Castro "almost died" and "they changed all his blood" in several transfusions, but he is doing well now, and is happy because he has time to watch television and write, Friday said Venezuelan President Hugo Ch?vez.
Castro (81) has been sick for more than one year. He left power and has not made any public appearances. His health condition is a secret, said Reuters.
"Fidel is all right, but he has not fully recovered. He is facing a small problem, but he can live other 100 years that way," Ch?vez told reporters in Brazil about the health condition of the man who has ruled Cuba since 1959.
"What is this problem? Well, he underwent one, two, three surgeries. He is 81 years old. He almost died. Fidel's blood was changed almost entirely. He is alive because he is Fidel," Ch?vez added.
Rumors about Castro's worsening health spread over the last month among the Cuban exile community in Miami.
