Title: Normal Topic VS Important Topic
Post by: Dr. Blutarsky on January 24, 2007, 11:46:09 PM
In Fun N Games, how is wrestling important, but Baseball, Basketball, NFL and Hockey normal topics? I understand the universal global appeal of Football(soccer), but wrestling??? Its a fake sport!!

There are more wrestling fans on this board than baseball, basketball or whatever. That's all.

Most likely not true. Only mods and admins can make the threads important, so its one of them that did it, probably for no other reason than liking the sport more.

Well you can pretty much say what sports are 'popular' topics by looking at the number of posts.

And by popular in this context I mean that people want to talk about those sports here on HTGTH.

And how would you know that?

Since it has around 9000 posts as opposed to the nearest competitor, the football thread having about 4000.

This time... Okay. You can blame me for this one.

But I have alibis for anything else that you people try to pin on me.

Oh, hold the front page, wrestling is a fake sport.

Ya know, since these guys are all gay in their skimpy costumes and they don't do anything special, the results are all pre-planned, these guys don't hurt each other, anybody can do it, i mean really, they get paid lots of money so they can go to the gym once a week, take some steroids, become big and get paid for it, what a load of crap.  And hell they even pretend to bleed, i mean some of these guys hide blood capsules in their trunks and then sneak them out and splatter them over their faces when nobody is looking.  In emergency situations though, when they lose the capsules they have ketchup bottles under the ring.  As for those rare times you see them receiving stitches backstage, or the fact that they have scars on their faces from all the cuts they "received" over the years, not so, 'tis make up.  The business doesn't really take it's toll on people, that myth about wrestlers having a worse life expectancy than rockstars, not so, guys like Owen Hart, Eddie Guerrero, Curt Hennig, Davey Boy Smith, Rick Rude, Bruiser Brody, The Von Erich kids, they ain't really dead, there all holed in on an island that's off the radar (kind of like the one in Lost - There ya go Jim!), it's sort of a wrestlers retirement home.

So yeah, wrestling sucks, when everybody on the board hates it and nobody posts in the threads on it having it as an important topic is damn crazy

Please explain Evo how a fake sport like Wrestling, where everything is made up, holds so much appeal?

P.S: I'm not kidding, I really want to know.

First off that YouTube video is one of the more embarrassing aspects of the industry. Back in the 1950's up until about 15 years ago, Pro Wrestlers took it upon themselves to act as if wrestling wasn't scripted and "protect the business." Thankfully that practise is pretty much abandoned.

Anyways, try telling people like Darren Drozdov that pro wrestling is a made-up sport. The dangers are very real. It is their job to execute their moves in as most realistic way possible, and "sell" them as being devastating, but of course, poor training or simple human error is all it takes to end a promising career.

For me, the appeal lies in the fact that it takes years to fully master the sport, and to put on a wrestling match that will sell pay-per-views and draw a huge crowd. Not just any Tom, Dick or Harry can pull off a five-star match. It takes exceptional skill to do it.

Also, it's just another form of escapist entertainment. Jack Bauer isn't really saving America against terrorists, but you wouldn't slag him off for being a fake. Instead, you watch into the show, and get sucked in by Keifer Sutherland portraying a kickass character and get entertained by it. That's what wrestling is to me anyway.

The argument of "it's all fake" just doesn't really cut it anymore in these types of conversation. We all know once they go back through the curtain, they talk about their matches, socialise etc. just like basketball teams, football teams do after the final whistle. The business has changed. Just to call it "fake" is disrespectful to the men and women who are on the road 250 plus days a year, suffering through very real injuries simply for the love of the business and the desire to entertain the fans. It's predetermined, but the physical toll is very real.
