Title: Rocky statue ready to hit the steps
Post by: MR.BROWNSTONE on September 07, 2006, 09:42:59 PM
Apollo Creed couldn't keep Rocky down. Nor could Mr. T's menacing Clubber Lang. Not even the steroid-juiced Russian giant Ivan Drago could knock out Rocky Balboa.

In that spirit, the 8-foot bronze statue of the fictional film character won another fight yesterday - over its own meaning and worth - when the city's Art Commission voted 6-2 to move the statue to a patch of lawn near the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Supporters maintained that the statue had stood the test of time and had become a beloved symbol of inspiration for Rocky fans. The two opponents thought that the statue was unnecessary at that location - that the museum steps themselves provided the magic and inspiration.

That's where the statue belongs.  :)

I saw that statue years ago when it was outside the Spectrum.  I thought it was cool.  Then I heard it was in storage and now it is going to be on display again, sweet.  It belongs at the museum.  It is a symbol of Philly.

I hate that cheesy, 70's Rocky character. Thoughts of bad hair, ugly girlfriends, and drunk, balding, wifebeating stepfather is not the image of Philadelphia i embrace.

If you're talking about Paulie........Paulie was Adrianne's brother not stepfather.  And yes that statue is a part of Philadelphia history now.  I lived in Philly when they first put it up and during our 3rd grade school trip we all ran up the steps.  It's a friggen piece of Philadelphia culture now....regardless if the asswipes in charge of the museum are too assholish to put it on display.  I dedicate Anal Cunt's masterpiece work "Art Fag" to them.
