Title: Wolfmother anyone?
Post by: vietnow138 on June 19, 2006, 03:49:58 AM
Has anyone heard that new band called Wolfmother? They remind me a lot of Zeppelin and Sabbath but with definately with a modern sound. If you havent listened to them yet you should they're one of the best bands out right now. Lately they've even began to get some good air play, which is great considering there hasn't been too many really good new rock n' roll bands.

You can hear them hear:  http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=18035203

Ive been hearing nothing but good things as far as this band goes, which is a real positive change from the same old, boring and generic rockbands that are multiplying like cockroaches these days....

Any really cool songs to check out, or is their whole album all around impressive?

They've been out here in Aus for a while now. Don't mean to be rude.. but they're more or less a rip-off band, just like "our" other band Jet. Wolfmother are too much like Black Sabbath, with bits of the White Stripes and Zeppelin added in. I honestly don't like them, if only because I like the original bands better.

Interesting point - they had something like 5 or 6 songs in the (triple j) top 100 countdown for '05 which is pretty amazing.

Exactly, they aren't very original. And Australia has MUCH better rock bands like the Screaming Jets, Powderfinger and The Butterfly Effect.

well...I listened to the songs on the MySpace link.  I liked all of them, especially Dimension.

But I see what you guys are saying about sounding a little too much like Led Zep. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

On the plus side, the singer has cool vox, and I like the guitar sound.

Yea exactly. When you listen to a band in 2006 you dont want to be saying things like "Hey they sound exactly like rock did 30 years ago".

Theyre fun to watch live but they aint doing anything special.

First I heard Mother on the radio; than I heard the 4 songs they had on myspace; than i sampled the album on Amazon; that day I bought the album (this past Fri 6/16)

I fucking love this band, love their sound, definitely sound like Sabbath and Zeppelin.  Shit, some soongs the riff sounds like Sabbath botht the vocals remind me of Zeppelin and vice versa....

Wish I had known or the gay rock station I listen to let me know they were in NYC earlier this month

Oh well, now there in Europe and won't get to see them  :-\ for a while at least

Why not? Rock in the 70's was the best. I'd much rather listed to a band that has a 70's sound then listen to bands like bullet for my valentine or avenged sevenfold.

I love rock from that period too. In fact, its pretty much all I listen to besides GN'R.

But, like, what does a band contribute to the world if they just carbon copy a bunch of stuff that has been done. We got the classics, and I love them, but Im more interested in bands that actually add to their genres.

this band is so much better than the crap polutting the rock airwaves these days....they play Mother alot on the rock station by me but that's not even close to the best song on the album....

another band I like that has new material out is Buckcherry.....from the video, Josh Todd looks like he knows how to have a good time :hihi:

I mean, how many times can they play Nickelback, TOAD, et all

It all sounds the fucking same I can't tell which band is which

I get what you guys are saying about them sounding a lot like Sabbath but they're definately not a rip off band. You could say that about any band, you could say all Zeppelin did was rip off Robert Johnson or that Stone Temple Pilots ripped off Pearl Jam because you heard the song Plush and saw a similarity. What good bands do is take things that aleady existed and push them further. Personally I really don't see that much of a similarity to call them rip off artists and to me they sound like they could fit into any time peroid after 1969 (including today) and sound relevent to what was happening musically.

Here is why wolfmother is a good band. They basically realized that 70s era rock n roll was great, so they thought "hey, if it aint broke don't fix it" Why should rock move in a new lame direction(like emo, hardcore, screamo..all that crap) when 70s rock still sounds good today. I'm glad to see some more zep influenced bands.

eh...they're decent....just another one of those rock revival bands that fails to make music with the same energy as great bands of the past...

much like jet....they have an old school sound, but their music just sounds too mellow and lazy...lacking any real power...

if you want real old-school rock with power and energy....go with buckcherry...they're the only band that has really maintained the power and energy of rock n roll.

I agree, theres nothing wrong with sounding like an awesome band.  I'd rather they sound like zep or sabbath then limp bizkit or fall out boy.  real rock died a while ago, heres to hoping new bands can bring it back.     Wolfmother sounds cool from what I've heard.

There are plenty of people out there that miss the 70's and 80's sound of rock but yet when we get a new band with that sound they are always criticized as being unoriginal and rips offs.  ???

There's not much orginality in rock today anyway. I'd rather listen to an unoriginal 70's style band than yet another unoriginal cookie cutter emo band.

I haven't heard Wolfmother's cd yet but the two songs I've heard were pretty good.

Exactly, anyone who says they don't like them because they sound "retro" thats complete bullshit, it's music, either it's good or its not. It doesn't matter how old or new someone is, that doesn't change the quality of their music. I'm sure if this band was form the early seventies they'd all be saying how great they are and wishing there were more bands like them today! And call me crazy! but I'd rather hear more bands that sound like Led Zeppelin than all the Emo and Metalcore shit thats out today.

Actually, bands like Zeppelin and Sabbath were the most highly criticized bands of the early 1970s. They weren't celebrated at all (especially Zeppelin). Just look at all of Rolling Stone Magazine's "critiques" of Zeppelin. As the movie Almost Famous points out, RSM trashed every album Zeppelin ever made. The fans, of course, loved bands like Zeppelin and Sabbath despite the critics unfairly bashing the bands for using the blues as a template to kick ass.

But I do agree with you that I'd rather hear bands like Wolfmother than the Emo and other junk that is currently dominating the rock music scene.

Anyone watch the grammys? Wolfmother won best hard rock performance which makes them the first Australian group to win a grammy in 25 years.

This is from blabbbermouth:
Launch Radio Networks reports: Australian trio WOLFMOTHER issued a statement yesterday (Tuesday, February 13th) regarding its Grammy win for "Best Hard Rock Performance". The Sydney-based band became the first Australian act to win a Grammy in 25 years, with its single "Woman" beating out entries by established acts like TOOL, SYSTEM OF A DOWN, NINE INCH NAILS and BUCKCHERRY. The group said, "A Grammy was the last thing on our minds today. We really thought that was reserved for the permanent residents of the U.S.A. We're honored and we're overwhelmed. It's enormous!"

MEN AT WORK was the last Australian band to win a Grammy Award.

WOLFMOTHER is currently on the road in Europe but will begin a new North American trek on February 22 in Vancouver, Canada.

The group expects to begin recording its second album in the fall.

Wolfmother have cancelled their European tour date for June and July.  Andrew Stockdale is too ill to fly.

Wolfmother Cancel European Tour

Australian rockers WOLFMOTHER have cancelled their entire European tour - frontman ANDREW STOCKDALE has been taken ill and is unable to travel.

The band was due to play a series of gigs over the summer (10) including several shows with veteran rockers Kiss and sets at Germany's Rock Am Ring this week (beg31May10) and Britain's famous Download music festival on 11 June (10).

They were also set to support Pearl Jam at London's Hard Rock Calling event on 25 June (10).

But the group has now scrapped all its European dates for June and July (10) because singer Stockdale has fallen sick.

A statement from the band, released to organisers of the Main Square Festival in France, reads, "We are sorry to announce that Wolfmother have been forced to cancel its full European tour for June and July. Due to medical reasons, Andrew Stockdale, Wolfmother's lead singer is unable to fly."

No further conditions about Stockdale's condition were available as WENN went to press. The band is expected back on the road in August for shows in the U.S.
