49 Killed After Plane Crashes Into House Near Buffalo
By MATTHEW L. WALD and TRYMAINE LEE
A Continental Express flight from Newark to Buffalo crashed into a house about four to six miles from Buffalo Niagara International Airport on Thursday night, killing 49 people, officials said.

The plane carried 44 passengers and a crew of 4, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Ted Lopatkiewicz, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said at midnight that he did not know if there were any survivors on the plane. The Erie County executive, Chris Collins, later said at a news conference that 49 people, including one on the ground, were killed.

Mr. Collins said the plane, Continental Airlines Flight 3407, crashed about 10:20, five minutes before it was due to land. The house it crashed into was still engulfed in flames at 12:30 a.m., and Mr. Collins said that about 12 houses were evacuated and a limited state of emergency was declared.

Trooper John Manthey of the New York State Police said the plane went down in the hamlet of Clarence Center.

?It was just like a huge great big crash, a boom,? said Sandra Baker, who lives two blocks from the site of the crash on Railroad Street.

Both of her sons, volunteer firefighters, were at the scene.

?There was this banging sound? before the crash, she said. Then she said there was a boom, then a dark cloud and flames and the acrid smell of fuel and fire wafting through the air.

She said she believed the two people who lived in the home where the plane crashed made it out safely.

Another woman who lives nearby described the sound before the crash as ?a loud roar over my house.?

?It was like the whole house shook,? said the woman, Jennifer Clark, who also lives on Railroad Street. ?Then there was silence.?

Ms. Clark said she looked out of her window and saw a ball of flames rising into the sky.

She woke up her husband and said, ?I think a plane just crashed.?

?I don?t know,? she said. ?I feel bad for the people on the plane and their families. I feel bad for the firemen who have to recover the remains of those poor people.?

Ms. Baker described the town as ?small town U.S.A,? a place that will reel from what she was sure would be the biggest tragedy the town has ever seen.

The plane went down in light snow, Mr. Lopatkiewicz said.

A joint investigation was being done by the State Police, the Erie County Sheriff?s Office and the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. A safety board team of investigators will arrive in Buffalo on Friday morning, he said.

The plane was a De Havilland DHC-8-400 Dash 8, a 74-seat twin-engine turboprop, operated by Colgan Airways, a feeder airline for Continental.

Colgan also flies as a feeder for US Airways and United Airlines. Colgan?s Web site said the airline operates 51 turboprops.

The last fatal crash involving a scheduled carrier in the United States was a ComAir regional jet in Lexington, Ky., in August 2006. The crew picked a too-short runway for takeoff; 47 passengers and 2 of the 3 crew members were killed.

Colgan is owned by Pinnacle Airlines Corporation, based in Memphis.

Micheline Maynard contributed reporting.

I just flew in a Dash 8 two days ago, from Grand Junction, CO to Denver, CO...straight over the Rockies....this was just a freak accident, please don't let it bring to a fear of flying. After all, it's still a million times safer than driving.

D has never been in a plane before.

I took my first flight back in August when I made my voyage to the Big Apple.

Let me tell you one thing, I hate airplanes.

Normally staying at home would be safer than both...in this case however, it was not for one poor guy!  nervous

I am not afraid to fly but if you have ever been in a prop you'd know the 2 hours worth of buzzing can drive you mad.  The plane I took decided somewhere right before the flight that they had to stop in Syracuse and pick up some folks before getting on to Rochester.  Between the hour drive to the airport and the flight making stops I could have driven in less time and not had a headache from the noise.

I agree this was a freak accident though.  Even sadder at the loss of a 911 widow on the flight.

I flew from Philly to Tennessee a couple years back and I wouldn't change a damn thing!  There is no way in hell I'd drive some ridiculous amount of hours when I could make it there in 2 hours.  On-time, my buddy waiting at the gate, enjoyed the wedding!, got smashed at the reception, had my other buddy designated driver us to the airport, hung out, 2 hours back home...great weekend.

From the studies I've read, flying and driving are about equal in their safety.  Don't let freak accidents scare you.

From what i've seen, they say flying is way safer....

I think there is less of a survival chance in an airplane crash..... I think thats what scares people

What a sad tragedy!!! And to top it off they say that it may have been on autopilot at the time!

That's why before a flight you need to have a few beverages, man!

Gotta fly with a clear head, man.  In case there IS an emergency, I have to be able to operate under duress.

I hear the stats etc, but Id much rather try to survive a car wreck than a Plane crash

I realize a very very small percentage of planes crash, but I just cant imagine being that many feet up in the air...... Imagine what goes through people's heads knowing they are about to crash etc. At least car accidents are usually pretty spontaneous and fast.

In a plane crash, u get a few minutes to think about it.............

I wish every passenger had a parachute.

Captain: Soooooooooorry to inform the passengers of flight 312, but we are going down.  Please form a single file line and jump out of the airplane and follow the instructions you were given before take-off.

Ah fuck it, everyone would still be screwed.  No one ever pays attention during the safety instructions.

There are some good stories though...

A guy spent an extra $50 to get an earlier flight that landed safely...

Another guy missed the plane due to having to do business on his laptop

Also there is a petition going around to get Ty Pennington to bring his show, to build a new home for the family who had their home destroyed...

If anyone is interested!  peace
