Here Today... Gone To Hell!

Initially, Stadium Arcadium, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' forthcoming ninth studio album, was going to be released in three separate parts. Frontman Anthony Kiedis was keen on the idea ? and championed it ? until he realized the third installment of the trilogy wouldn't surface for almost two years.

"That notion, I couldn't handle," he said. "In a year and a half, I know we'll be writing new music and then it will be time for that. In the end, [these songs] seemed like a body of music that needed to be heard as one body."

So Kiedis and the Chilis suffered through the "heart-wrenching" process of cutting down the 38 tracks they'd recorded with longtime friend and producer Rick Rubin to the 25 featured on the Stadium Arcadium double LP. "Slow Cheetah," "Storm in a Tea Cup," "Hard to Concentrate," "C'mon Girl," "Ready Made" and "Desecration Smile" are just a handful of the tracks that survived the process and will make the record's track list.

"I think we always [approach the songwriting process] with this mindset that this time, we're going to write the perfect 11 songs and just put out 11 songs like they used to do in the days of Buddy Holly and the Beatles," Kiedis said. "Those early records were so short and sweet, and had this kind of lasting profound impact on the world because they're very memorable and digestible and, I don't know, maybe it just takes less energy or effort to connect with smaller collections. But as has been the case with every single time we've tried to do that, we end up with 30 some-odd songs. The difference this time was we ended up liking all of those songs and finishing all of those songs and it actually became a very difficult process to even just whittle it down to 25. I think it's sort of the best thing that we've ever done, and I just want to get it out there on the airwaves and in the earholes of the world."

Stadium Arcadium's first single will be "Danni California." Kiedis said the band plans to shoot a video for the track soon with Tony Kaye, who directed "American History X." The performance-based clip will boast an underlying story about a character that's appeared on the band's previous two discs.

"The spirit of Danni was evoked in the song 'Californication,' and it talks about a pregnant teenager. And then she sort of comes to fruition in a song called 'By the Way,' where she is actually mentioned by name," he said. "This song's the final chapter of Danni." Kiedis wouldn't elaborate further on the video's treatment, but did say Danni's "an amalgamation of lots of things and people ? she's not really based on one person but a collective of probably every girl I've ever met."

As for Stadium Arcadium's sound, Kiedis said the writing process was aided this time around by the fact that "everybody was in good moods. There was very little tension, very little anxiety, very little weirdness going on and every day we showed up to this funky room in the Valley where we write music, and everyone felt more comfortable than ever bringing in their ideas."

Every idea was used to create those 38 tracks. "There is a weird thread that connects back to our first three records," Kiedis added. "There's this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records. There's some retardedly painful funk on this record. There are a few songs that are just straight-up dirty funk, and beyond that, there's this ongoing progression of everything else that has been slowly happening between Californication and By the Way, with harmonies and textures. [Guitarist] John [Frusciante] has really fallen in love with the art of treating sounds. [The album's] layered, but not in a heavy-handed way. John's work is definitely of the masterpiece quality, as a guitar player and sound treatment-ist. He has certainly gone to some weird ?ber-level of hearing some Beethoven-sized symphony sh-- in his head. He really shines on this record."

The 13 tracks that didn't make it onto the final product might wind up surfacing commercially, after all, because "I'd be crushed if they didn't get heard," Kiedis said. But it won't be cheap for the truest of the band's fans to get them all. The singer said the idea is to release different versions of the album through different retail outlets, each with a unique bonus track. So fans who download Stadium Arcadium using iTunes would get one bonus track ? say "Especially in Michigan" ? while those who picked up their copy at Target would get a different bonus song ? like "Mercy, Mercy."

"We're going to try and do that with the independent record stores across America, and for all the monster chains," he explained. "We'll service everybody with a different bonus track, because we have them."

Stadium Arcadium is due May 9, according to the band's management.

By The Way is my favourite Chilly Willy album, so it will be hard to top, but this is definetaly something to look forward to.   : ok:

I think that, with the 13 song dealio, the only real 'fair' way of doing it would be by region.

I mean, I find having a 'special edition' is a bit exploitative, sometimes, if you're only going to be buying it because it will be a collectible. But when there are thirteen different version...

report from a few weeks back said that the first half of the double album will be released in May, and the second half in early 2007.

oh yeah Im insanely excited about the album, John has discarded some of his "minimalist" attitude towards the guitar and have taken a bit of a rock approach it seems, with longer and more complicated solos than on the previous 2 albums.
he lost a lot of his technique during his drug period in the 90s, but has made up for that with an incredible creativity and a great minimalist way of playing (his amazing right hand technique has always been there).
he has since then taken a helluva lot of guitar lessons and have practised every day it seems, he has also promised there will be a lot of Hendrix-like solos on the album.
so I can't wait to hear how amazing this is gonna sound!

Supersize Flea: After more than a year of ridiculously prolific, collaborative songwriting, SoCal's funk punk stalwarts unleash a Rick Rubin helmed double album.

"The chemistry was in better order then in a long time," singer Anthony Kiedis says. "Everyone is frighteningly happy at the moment."

Page Dr. Phil: Kiedis says he's again exploring "the dark and nefarious side of Los Angeles, but not in a judgmental sense."

He adds that the personal songs are similarly about "dysfunction and lack of success in relationships, but it's an "it's okay, it's not the end of the world kind of thing."

Paging, un Marky Mark: While Arcadium still boasts the chilled out grooves of Californication and By The Way, Kiedis contends that "it's probably the funkiest of the bunch. There's one song, Charlie that is more profoundly funky than anything we've done in awhile."

That's cool about the double-album but it's stupid that the're releasing the bonus tracks like that. Stupid.

The funkmeisters have also been booked for a handful of European summer festivals, and Flea divulged that they've even agreed, in principal, to play Lollapalooza (see "Lollapalooza Returning As A Three-Day Festival"). Oh, and then there's that idea they're kicking around that involves them doing a U.S. arena tour with Kanye West, which, if all goes according to plan, would launch in late August with dates running through the winter.

"I think we'll be doing some legs with Kanye, but I don't know if that's confirmed yet or not," Flea said. "I think we're going to do a month or two with him. I think it's going to happen, and I hope it happens. He's a great artist ... and we always try to get the best people to play with that we can."

Last month, frontman Anthony Kiedis told MTV News that discussions had been initiated between the Chili Peppers and Kanye camps. "I'm a fan of him in general and I think his music is very good, and I just like his vibe and his energy," Kiedis said. "We've had good success with bringing bands [on the road with us] that aren't traditionally seen as going together, and the more we can kind of break the mold of a genre-specific bill, it's kind of good for us. It would be great. I hope it all works out. The channels have been opened."

A spokesperson for West had no comment.

But even if things don't end up working out with West, it doesn't look as if it'll dampen Flea's enthusiasm about the 25-track Stadium Arcadium. He said he hasn't been this excited about the band's music since "we first started in 1983." The songs, he said, "mean so much to me ? it's the best record we've ever made. I feel so important to share [this album] with the world. Making this record, I just feel like each one of us was at the best that we could be. This Stadium Arcadium, this is our grand statement ? this is the best that we can do. This is the best we're capable of. If you don't like this [record], you don't like the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Period."

Flea said that all the ingredients were in place for the band's "magnum opus": Producer Rick Rubin (Slayer, Jay-Z) was back on board to twist the knobs, and "we worked really well communally together. We really respected each others' opinions and didn't waste time arguing about stupid stuff. We really just got down and made some music."

This was not the case when the Peppers recorded 2002's By the Way. "It was an unpleasant experience for me," Flea explained. "There was definitely tension in the group, tension between [guitarist] John [Frusciante] and I, and I didn't feel comfortable creatively within the band. I didn't feel free to express myself. All of that [was] resolved [during the Stadium sessions], and we got to this place where we felt very free. We were all getting along and all working together well, and when we do that, that's when we're at our best ? that's when the real magic happens."

Arcadium, Flea said, is a funk-riddled rocker, which should be good news for the band's longtime fans. But the album has its tranquil, muted moments too.

"I've always loved being mellow," he said, smiling. "Love being intense too. I can't describe what effect [this music will have] on people and whether people [will] perceive it as being mellow or what. We keep rolling along and we learn stuff as we go, and the more that we learn, the more we keep adding. I think initially with us, the main thing we knew how to do was rock out. Just rock the f--- out ? to just go into animal mode and get into this primal thing. We've always loved that, and that's always the essence of what we do: complete surrendering to the groove and giving it up.

"But as you go, you learn other things," he continued. "You learn harmony and melody and how beautiful it is to love something as delicate as a flower petal. You deepen. To me, we've retained the intensity and used it in a lot of different ways. But I think people are going to be able to rock, and I think people will get their boogie shoes on and have a good time. I think that everybody likes to feel the power of life."

Have you guys heard Dani California yet?  I just downloaded it a few days ago and I've been listening to it a lot... I like the way it breaks into the solo at the end.

yeah I love it, solo is great but the vocal melodyline of the song is the thing that sticks out for me. Kiedis did a great job.

Elvis, Nirvana, David Bowie, Poison?, The Misfits, The Beatles, Parliament, Buddy Holly, Jimmy Hendrix, Sex Pistols, Boy George and i think Green Day.

i like the single alot but it just seems like they have no where to go musically anymore, it seems slightly rehashed. I guess thats asking too much since they've been together so long.  I still love it though.

The Darkness?

Dani California sounds EXACTLY like every other Chili Peppers song!  Which is fine, I like them, but I saw these guys talking up their own album and I was thinking we might get something really different here. 30 songs that all sound like Dani California is not going to cut it for me -

Because the lead single sounds like their other songs. And their other songs all sound the same. Hence the revelation.

I saw the video for Dani Claifornia earlier. I don't think too much of the song (though it isn't a bad song), but that was only the second or third time that I have heard it. But I agree with DC-and a whole bunch of letters and numbers. It was just...Chilli Peppers. No risks, at least not with that song. Sure fire middle of the road rock, pretty much. But maybe it will grow on me. Maybe some part of it will stand out at some point. The video was awful though. I don't know if it is supposed to be funny, but it isn't. And it sure as hell ain't innovative. Who says that every video has to be innovative, eh? Not me. But that video is rubbish.

yeah I agree, DC isn't very inventive, but that's usually the case with any first single from any big bands. it does have a very catchy chorus though, also something common with most big bands first singles.
it's a song that could have been on Californication, from the sound and style. but it's nothing like the By The Way album, except from the song By the Way....which was also the first single.
so I don't exacly agree everything with RHCP sounds the same, every album they have released have sounded very different from each other IMO.

Markus, my man, you gotta take it easy.  You don't have to take what I'm saying as the ultimate truth at all. As I said earlier, it is only my assesment. I never said anywhere that people should not buy it, or that my word is stone. People give their opinions on these boards all of the time, I was only giving mine.
As for you guessing that I have never listened to their albums, you are very wrong. You have any idea how many comments I read on this site where I completely dis-agree with people's opinions on certain GNR songs or Solos or something, but I don't think I'd call someone a moron because of it.

Scar Tissue was the first single from Californication........ No other song sounds like it on the CD

By the Way was the first single from By The Way and is in myopinion the 3rd or 4th weakest track on the album and no other song sounds like it.


the only reason people are saying this is standard RHCP is cause Anthony does the word play on the states but for fuck sake its not like he does it in every single song.

Edit: I just ordered a new RHCP dvd the other day btw, "the Ultimate Review". it's some unofficial thing I think, but it's got the Woodstock 94 performance on it, so I'll get so see more of Navarros live performances with RHCP (this was his very first gig with them actually). the other stuff Ive seen with him live in RHCP has been phenomenal, so I hope I get it tomorrow! ;D
it's also some documentary thing on it, I don't expect too much of that though.

I heard the song played on the radio again, and it's okay... Something I would probably turn the radio up for, but I would never bother downloading it.

I also saw the video again. Start to finish, this time. It really is awful. It's as if RHCP's are trying to make fun of old bands to prove that they are still down with the kids, to distance themself from other bands that have been around for ten+ years. Who are they trying to be, Bowling for Soup? A parody of Give it Away, that would have been funny. That MTV shite that they came up with, certainly ain't.

I've never been impressed with the peppers' videos.

All those were innovative amazing videos but I think this video is pretty cool. I love the song and 28 songs over 2 discs, there is gonna be plenty for everyone.

Compared to every other video out I think its pretty genius.  Morphing from one period to the next, I think its cool.

I'm kidding! I don't hate the song, and I will definatly try to check out the new material... So I'm not really hating on it. The video just does nothing for me. It's just easy and, as I said, no risks. But hey, hopefully the material will be strong enough to render that merely a footnote.

that is, to me, usually the case with first singles. they seem like insignificant footnotes when the whole album drops.
labels are only looking for something simple and catchy for first single, so most bands usually write a first single for the purpose of it being a first single only...satisfying the label sort of.
but RHCP has always done it in a mighty fine way IMO. I like all their first singles, but the rest of the albums are usually loads better!

Filler is a matter of opinion.

Around The World,Parallel Universe,Scar Tissue,Otherside,Get On Top,Easily,Porcelain,I like Dirt,Purple Stain and Road Trippin are songs I love.

The rest Im not crazy about but 10 songs I like on a CD is an amazing number so i dont hold it against them.

By The Way however has no filler to speak of in my opinion.

I wasn't a big fan of by the Way when it first come out ,But later really grow to love that album.

Same reason everyone's favorite song differs. No such thing as a universally liked song, so even though IM not a fan of lets say Emit Remmus. Im sure someone out there considers that one of the best songs off the album.

To that end, filler must be a purely subjective term. In which case we all have the right to a personal definition. My definition is Californication.  :P

I try not to think of filler as songs that I don't like... Anything termed as filler, for me, represents songs that fill up an album in as far as they are: safe, no risks (we've been there); are no different to any of the other songs on the album; sound like a bad immitation of a previous effort, or they just sound like they are there to increase the running time. If a band tries something in a different direction and fuck it up, a bad album it will make. If you fill the gaps with 'Chilli's' songs then I would be forced to class it as filler.

I never  understood the word filler and Personally think its a bullshit term.

Some of my fav songs of all time would generally be considered "Filler"

with gnr comin back and RHCP releasing Stadium Arcadium, '06 is looking to be the greatest year ever.  damn could you imagine if CD ends up being a trilogy (wishful thinking, I know...) then we would have five great new albums from two amazing bands in one year! i would lock myself in my room and listen to everything all day.

Anthony Kiedis is like an entirely new frontman, he started vocal lessons and has truly improved everything.

John Frusciante is the most innovative and greatest guitarist around today. FLEA is unmatched on Bass, Chad Smith is probably the most underrated drummer in music history.

Anthony writes amazing lyrics and IVe tried and tried but u very rarely hear any 2 pepper songs that sound anything alike. that to me is amazing.

They sound amazing live, they have great chemistry and energy.  Their songs take u to places and really move u in a way not very many bands can.

Anybody who simply says a band: "Sucks balls", in my opinion, is obviously not intelligent enough for me to argue with.

SA with 28 brand new songs is mouth watering. DC is the only song ive heard so I got 27 unbelievable surprises to hear May 9th and I am so excited I cant put it into words.

Ok bud - sounds good - Ac/Dc I love, but they sound exactly alike - RHCP aren't like that! Metallica's newer stuff sounds too similar, I would'nt say their older stuff is that repetitive - But you are absolutely right about GNR following up with different stuff, and I'm glad the newer tunes have a completely different sound, as well-

the whole album is not as good as My Friends of course, that's one of the best RHCP songs IMO, but it's DEFINATELY worth picking up!

a lot of people don't know this, but Flea actually wrote quite a bit of the lyrics for the OHM album. Kiedis was having a very rough time with drugs and finding the inspiration to write lyrics at the time.

pop the album in, start with track 1...Warped, it's gonna kick you right in the face man! :)

good call D, I personally don't like RHCP (the album) much, mostly because of the shitty production, there are some cool songs on there for sure. I haven't heard the remastered version though, it might sound much better!

i have been a chilis fan for years,and i liked there early stuff and i like there last couple of albums too.i think californication is there best followed by blood sugar.
im looking forward to hearing the new album however the only thing i have heard is the new single and the only hing i like about it is the guitar solo.i think kiedis sucks too both vocally and lyrically.

I just checked out the tracklist for that "What Hits?" album... it's all old school!  Funny that there aren't more BSSM songs on there (I only spotted "Under The Bridge"?)

What Hits? was released by EMI in 94, Im assuming they made a deal with WB to have the biggest hit, Under the Bridge, on the album.
What Hits? is also out on DVD with all their 80s videos, plus some live stuff, some hilarious stuff on there! ;D

BA, IMO Kiedis did the finest job on DC. lyrically it's ok, but the vocals are great.

His vocals are fine but his lyrics do need some work. I own all 8 studio albums from the peppers, plus the greatest hits cd released in 2003 plus I got the live in hyde park import in August of 2004. So, I can't wait for stadium arcadium to come out especially with so much music to listen to.

Earlier in his career he may not have wrote the greatest of lyrics but Mother's Milk to now he is amazing.I love AK cause I relate to him so well.


AK like myself wasnt born with a naturally gifted set of pipes but he persevered and with hard work developed into an amazing frontman and a pretty damn good singer now. I wasnt born with a great voice but instead of giving up I used AK as my inspiration and realized I could do it, So even though Ill never be a beautiful singer I have vastly improved my vocals thanks to AK showing me if u work hard enough and want it bad enough, U can get pretty damn good at it.

So I apologize if i go a little off but Anthony is one of my biggest inspirations and heroes and Ill fight to the death defending him.

But the band's ninth studio album is the most ambitious work of its twenty-three-year career -- an attempt to consolidate everything that is Chili Peppers, from their earlier, funnier funk-metal stuff to soul-baring "Under the Bridge"-style balladry to Californicating vocal-harmony pop. And unlike the Foo Fighters' similarly expansive but bloated double disc In Your Honor, and almost every other double album of the post-vinyl era, the band pulls it off. It's a late-career triumph that could pass for another, lesser group's greatest-hits collection.

Much of the credit for the album's depth -- and the swelling, ever-morphing, headphone-candy arrangements that boost every track -- goes to the band's not-so-secret weapon, John Frusciante. It's been clear since his return to the band on 1999's Californication that Frusciante came away from his near-fatal heroin addiction with new musical superpowers, and they're in full bloom on Stadium Arcadium. Take "Charlie," which sounds like a monochromatic "Give It Away" retread until it bursts into the rainbows of Frusciante's falsetto harmonies and dueling, simultaneous guitar solos. Also of note are the laser-gun funk riffing and nuclear-fuzz solo on the pulsing, supercatchy "Tell Me Baby" and the Art Garfunkel-like backup vocals on the eerie, droning ballad "If."

But like the Rolling Stones -- another rhythm-conscious act who started by ripping off black music only to dig much deeper -- the Red Hot Chili Peppers are a real band, where everybody counts and no one is replaceable (save for, perhaps, Bill Wyman). Flea has spent years whittling down his frantic popping and slapping to a Zen-like melodic minimalism, while melding ever more deeply with Chad Smith, who remains the swingingest rock drummer this side of Mitch Mitchell. But after 2002's By the Way, the band's least funky album, the bassist finally cuts loose again here, reasserting himself as the best non-hip-hop reason to buy a subwoofer. Flea's quacking, double-time lines on "21st Century" are a reminder that the Chili Peppers were recording Gang of Four-influenced dance rock back when Franz Ferdinand was just a dead Austrian. And then there's Kiedis, whose vocals keep improving at an age when many rockers start slipping their high notes to backup singers. He shows versatility throughout, from his dead-on impression of Jimi Hendrix (his biggest vocal influence) on "Hump de Bump" to a new country-rock growl on the chorus of the riff-o-rama track "Readymade." Kiedis is also, more or less, the inventor of rap rock, and he embraces his roots, dropping the most rhymes on any album since BloodSugarSexMagik. He hasn't updated his flow in a couple of decades, and most of his lyrics are still unrepentant nonsense ("Ticky ticky tackita tic tac toe/I know everybody's Eskimo"). But the very familiarity of the style makes it an appealing counterpoint to the band's latter-day melodic splendor, instead of a Durst-ian embarrassment.

Stadium Arcadium has too many midtempo tracks and, in the manner of U2's All That You Can't Leave Behind, is more of a summation of the Peppers' career than a step forward. But the band is still capable of surprises, as on one of the discs' many potential singles: the bouncy, four-chord "Make You Feel Better," a Sixties-influenced pop tune with Fifth Dimension harmonies and a Ringo Starr beat. A few songs later, Kiedis seems to confess some fears about the project at hand: "The risk, is it worth it?/The disc, is it perfect?" Perfect? Nah. But close enough.

i was was confronted with the news that our record has been leaked to
the internet
it does not come out til may 9 but now it has leaked
and not that i know alot about this kind of thing
but i guess now it is possible to down load it for free if you want
well
that's not very nice
if you down load it now off one of these file sharing sites
you will be getting a pale imitation of the record
it will be of the poor sound quality of the technique they used to
get it on there
and that will break my heart
it will break john frusciante's heart
it will break anthony kiedis's heart
and it will break the heart of chad smith
yes, we worked for a year and a half to make the epic record of our
lives
and it is sad to me for the business reasons of course
i think we are selling something really cool and we put all we had
into it, 28 songs, 2 hours of the best that we can offer
and i think it is a fair deal for everyone
and for people to just steal a poor sound quality version of it for free
because some asshole stole it and put it on the internet
is sad to me
but, equitable business reasons aside
the thing that really bums me out is
we worked so hard, and so thoughtfully, all of us, for so long
to make this record sound as warm and full from top to bottom
as was possible
we spent day and night for a year making sure every little sound was
just right
that they were all put together in the most beautiful way we could
we did not leave a stone unturned in doing that work
i can not put in words how much this record, stadium arcadium, means
to us
how sacred the sound of it is to us
and how many sleepless nights and hardworking days we all had
thinking about how to make it be the best sounding thing we could
and now, for someone to take it and put it out there with this poor
sound quality

Yeah, it's very sad for bands to go through this sort of thing. But, a more important question, how do you stop it?

Cry me a river......man..... He should be happy people want to hear / listen to their songs! I couldn't wait to check out people's reaction about the songs...if I knew it got leaked....there isn't anything you can do about it at that point......the comments on the album have been more then positive by the way.....no...instead he bitches about it beeing leaked....no shit......that unfortunately happens with every band....every band..... It breaks his heart? Devastated...hurt?...A painful pill??.....C'mon....too much big words.

I would be hurt if someone stole work in progress songs. Then I could understand his point of view. Not finished ready to go songs, which quality leaked is around 160 kbs... mp3's on your mp3 player are around 128......

stop sending out advance copies to the media. your fans are gonna buy it without reading a review anyways, so make the press/media wait til the release date befor ethey can review it. that's the only thing i can think of. that and stop putting streams of it online for advance listening. people just record that shit.


i don't know what flea is talking about with this poor sound quality mumbo jumbo. the version i got was FLAC files which are lossless quality, and it sounds great to me. maybe someone just copied mp3's into flac, but it sounds atleast just as good as anything i've ever downloaded from Itunes.

It is lame when people download a whole album. A few songs are ok. But bands lose money when lots of fans rip the entire album off. I don't care if it's the year 2030, stealing is stealing.

You guys sound like the RIAA blaming the internet for ruining the artists, but the music industry is pumping out processed trash with one hit single that is shoved down your throat so that you buy an album that is all filler.  If Stadium Arcadium is a good album, it will sell.  It doesn't matter if a few hunded people download it a week early for bragging rights.

I agree with that. But I think people have a moral responsibility too. Downloading a few songs to get a sample of what the new album is going to be like is cool.

Maybe you are fortunate enough that you can buy every album that comes out that you want, but I think that you need to appreciate that not everybody can. And what? I myself will probably download around five or six songs, maybe less, and if I think that it is worth my money then I will buy it... Because I am lucky enough to be able to afford it (Well, sort of...).

Not one member of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers need ever work again. So what right do they have to complain that people are downloading their albums when they are sold at such ludicrously inflated prices? Were it not for the Supermarkets selling chart album's at around ?8.99, we would be back in the ?12.99 for a new album territory over here. Hell, that is already the case with slightly less commercialy succesfull bands (that does not mean bands not part of the industry... there is a difference). Bands like this get to do something they love, as well as making infinitely more money than people that work three times as hard. Yes, it can be a fickle industry but as is the world and so are a lot of jobs.

Journey, the lesser bands need not have any concern about people downloading their music, because chiefly it can only benefit them. It is a great way to get exposure. If they are out of the limelight, the people that care enough about music to have found them in the first place are going to be buying their album anyway. Once they have got that exposure, and have reached the point that there are going to be people around the world, criminals (...I would love to be able to use the world burglar, it's such a great word!)... These robbers!, that there is going to be people downloading their music, well... They are probably by then going to be earning enough that it shouldn't matter.

Music piracy is not going to destroy music. At most, all that it is ever going to destroy is the music industry.

How does any band ever get heard if they aren't getting radio play? You know Markus, the radio isn't the only place to hear about new bands. Bands can gain momentum from throwing cheap CD's out for nothing, they can get new fans when they're supporting/duel headlining with other bands or, the old fashioned way, by word of mouth. You see the sticky at the top of this section? (the one that matters) Read it. Go on, be the first person to actually read the rules! You see what is happening in that thread? Well, that is what is happening all over the internet, ever minute of every day. Grass roots music fans are getting unknown bands out there all of the time.

One other thing that I just want to add, which I did mean to say in my original post but completly forgot to include, is that I do not condone the downloading and subsequent bootleg selling by non-fans of copied CD's. It's exploitative to both the artist and whoever they are selling it to (unless they know... If they do, they're an arsehole as well). That is 99% profit from a process that the individual had nothing to do with, and never would I have any part in it.

I see were your coming from D.But you can't blame the whole sales slump on Downlaoding .A lot has to due with the fact that the recoded companys releas a lot of shit product every year.

And hell the companys really don't care about the aritist the will sign some one just to get one or two hits of them then they could care less about them.

Well I'm not syaing anything official, but I've previewed about 20 songs so far.

I've listened to the sounds and vibes of them, its a lot of variety. For an album of 28 songs, that's a good thing, but there's too much funk/early rhcp. I like the 99-2002 era RHCP better.

They really mixed it all together, which isn't bad but I personally almost might not buy the record. "Stadium Arcadium" is the best song so far I must say. It's a decent album. For the length, it's great. I just don't like the early RHCP, if you do then you will love this album...

What do you guys think?

daaaaaaamn, I can't even begin to explain how much I love this album!!
this is IMO their best effort since BSSM, definately!
it's got everything, funk, rock, mellow...all clashed together in a fucking amazing double album!
it took me probably a few months to fully appreciate the BTW album, it was a little hard to get into for me. but I love it a lot now. but this one...lord, I loved it from first listening! normally that might not be a good thing, since you might get tired of it sooner. but it's got 28 friggin songs! so I think I'll keep my ears very busy with this album for a very long time!

my first favourites are of course the most funky rockers, but that's cos Ive always been an old school RHCP fan. but the more mellow ones are just friggin great as well!
I can easily play through both cd's without skipping a single song, just enjoying the whole thing.
I think I will have this album on repeat for quite some time before I even listen to anything else again!
that says a lot, cos Im very restless when it comes to music, I usually switch a helluva lot between artists and albums when Im listening to music.

So far I've heard the first 4 songs and Slow Cheetah. Snow is easily the best one for me. I cant really say that I'm a fan although I've liked the songs that I've heard. Theres just something that keeps me  from buying their music. So far the 5 songs I've heard are good but there arent any real surprises. Except for Snow, everything else immediately sounds like RHCP. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your point of view. :peace:

Buyed it today. After I listened to the songs...yeah I downloaded them... when I like it I want to buy it anyways. Gonna get back to which songs I liked most, not decided yet. Great tunes on it, very well written. In almost every song there is a cool element to find.

Stadium Arcadium....great song....kinda gets me... I still have to figure out what's it about... The melodie grabs my throath somehow...yet the lyrics are not 'sad'....more positive..."warming to you". Kinda contradiction with the feeling I get from only listening to the melodies...I love it.  Did that make sense?
Torture me...one of my favorite's too! The drums....great great....gets me pumped up...And the trompet is cool!

I really love By The Way i dont why it gets so much shit from so many peppers fans, it was different and it was great. very melodic, i love the crazy ass beach boy ish melodies in "Tear". There are so many fantastic songs on that record. im actually rocking out to it  right now lol.

it's got all that stuff and way more! it's like a perfect combo of BSSM, Cali and BTW, plus some brand new sounds!

I actually did buy it. Walmart had it for 13.88, I got it marked down through an Target ad for 12.88, paid 13.76 for it. I've listened to disc 1 mainly, fell asleep through track 8 or so, so far its a good album. It put me to sleep, I liked Slow Cheetah, and Strip my Brain

The Chili Peppers come out swinging on this one. I'm a casual RHCP fan but I gotta say I really like it. It has a cool blend of newer sounds (Californication) and older style jams (Freaky Styley, Mothers Milk). 2 CD's, 2 hours, 28 songs, well worth the purchase. I don't buy CD's as much anymore, not because of downloading but I'm getting older & my music taste isn't around as much anymore, so I usually just buy the heavyweights (Foo Fighters, Metallica, VR). This one was well worth it and packs a punch, I highly recommend it as it covers all the Pepper sounds and then some (old school funk, slow love ballads in the way only they can do, heavy hitting rock)

"Hard To Concentrate" to me is maybe the greatest Chili's song ever.

This song is amazing and makes  me shiver when I hear it.


this album is gonna take some time to fully digest.

Hard To Concentrate was the song that stood out to me.... but I think that's because it was the first song I listened to... and it was on headphones.  I also like Desecration Smile, Hump De Bump, Slow Cheetah and Made You Feel Better.

I still have a ways to go, but these are the songs that I've let "sink in".  I'm not sure the album is the style that I would have preferred going in, but the songs are still really good.

I think this is another album I'll have to add to my "to buy" list. That along with Pearl Jam's newie.
And Tool's new album is getting pretty good reviews, so I might have to check that out too.

I'm very impressed with this album, the only RHCP cd I've ever bought was BSSM (Cali was on the radio enough so didn't have to buy it).  Thanks alot to you guys in this thread for the good reviews and recommendations  : ok:. 

I haven't got through the second disc yet but favorite so far is Snow.  Cool bass lines and awesome guitar on entire album! 

Man the store I bought it had a sticker for $19 and it rang up as $12, couldn't hardly believe it, for a double-disk nonetheless. 

First time through H2C doesn't really stand out for me but I think it's because I always like their songs where the instruments carry the song and in this song the vocals really do. 

Stadium Arcadium is awesome!  I'm not sure if it eclipses my extreme like for Blood Sugar Sex Magik(which is probably the closest album to AFD in my ranking of things) but it is quite excellent.  All of the songs are good IMO, but someone of them are worse than others.  A few songs that stick out are "Torture Me" "Wet Sand"(which could very well be the next Under the Bridge) and many more.

And i'm seeing the Peppers later tonight!  ;D

ive listened to Desecration Smile bout 8 times in a row, WOW i cant stop listening, I am mesmerized.

I mostly put on Jupiter, listen through it. then I put on Mars and listen through it...than I go back to jupiter again ;D

So far I listen to Jupiter a lot more. I just haven't gotten into this album that much as a whole.

I think this album is great in its depth of 28 tracks, but it has a little too much tone to it. It has everything, and I'm not really liking that. They should of stuck to the Californication and the By the Way sound... I loved that, and this goes back to that Uplift Mofo party bs....

A little weak.

From 3:42 seconds to the end, it is the most heartbreaking absolute perfect song.


Only flaw is it doesnt last long enough after that, they couldve brought it back and made it one of the greatest songs ever, but it ends too soon.

But from 3:42 on, it is simply a perfect piece of music all the way around.

Hey is a great song but it just cant follow an unbelievable listening experience like Wet Sand.

Listened to it a few times all the way though. A really great body of work, but it needs a few spins to really get into. I really like "Death of a Martian" and "Makes you feel better."

Bought it on Friday. It does have a lot of different styles in it.

The first 7 tracks of Jupiter are just great. I also love the 9th, 11th and 14th tracks of Jupiter as well as the first and 7th tracks off of Mars. They're just way cool. I'll have to listen more to Mars to give a good review.

THe album takes a few listens.

My first listen through, only about 4 or 5 songs really caught my ear.

NOw though after about 5 listens, every song is just fantastic.

It's definatly an album that you need to listen to atleast three times striaght through .

See  I disagree with this. The albums have 28 songs, so of course some will end up what are called "filler". But instead of having "filler" songs that sound like Californication or BTW, I'd much rather hear them change it up and go a little old school. Hence the Uplift Mofo & Mothers Milk style songs. Maybe to most they're not great, but they are different. And it's a change of pace while listening to a double album.

Some great songs on this, I prefer Mars for some reason but both are solid. For anyone on the fence about buying this I highly recommend it. : ok:

Actually i've been listening to the album for about two weeks.  i listened to it when it was streamed on VH1.  and it really doesn't take me long to formulate an opinion on something, especially if i hear it a lotttt.

This album is a different kind of album. It has many, many styles on it. Not necessarily something you can put in and listen to all the way through, both discs but something where I could find something to fit my mood no matter what. Meaning a different song fills a different mood.

It'll take me awhile to have my review but it will definitely be a positive one.

the only song I tend to skip is "If" but it's still a good song! hell, I can't describe how satisfied I am with this album! ;D

I don't mean this as an insult but I usually play "If" when I want to go to sleep. It just has that quietness to it.

I think that everyone is blowing this album out of proportion. It's a good album, I have it. I like it, but it isn't their best album or the best album of the year.

This new RHCP album doesn't compare to Buckcherry's "15".

The double disc album that has  been getting so much praise is a little bloated I believe. I havn't listened to it but only 3 times all the way through, so I may be taking these things back later on. Right now, this is how I feel.

After a week of casual listening (interrupted by an insane week at NYC), 'especially in michigan' is my favorite song by far.  Second fav is "if".  I'm enjoying the funk songs but it's going to take me a while to get used to the slow ones.

After a week Im enjoying alot and Frusciante really picked his game up.

However, much like the Illusions, Im starting to think that one album culled from this would have been wiser

Jupiter is absolutely brilliant, while Mars is well....Mars...

This is an album(s) that Im more than glad to have as a part of a collection, which is coming a long way from since I only buy maybe half a dozen albums a year.

I was worride Id only end up liking Dani California and another potential single, but the whole first album is entirely filler-less in my opinion, while I can only hope Ill soon have the same opinion of Mars. : ok:

I don't think RHCP was aware of this at all, if they were they would have left that 1 song off the 28 track album! there are plenty of other singles on there, and the b-sides Ive heard are just as good as the rest! so they could easily have replaced Dani California.

I agree, the Chili Peppers have been one of, if not the most origial bands for nearly 20 years.. Although I do find it odd they chose THIS song as the first single. If it was the 3rd or 4th single, I don't think it'd be a big deal, even though it really isn't a big deal. Anyone know if either Petty or RHCP commented on this?? I'd imagine Petty would be pretty laid back about it all.

This CD took me till 4 listens before I really fell in love with it.

I dont know, its like after 3 listens or so, melodies and hooks jump out at u that u really didnt notice before.

I didnt like this song the first two times i heard it.

Now its one of my favorites.

Same with Wet Sand, Gunner, listen and relate it to your life and I guarantee u it will hit u like a bullet.

I didnt particularly care for it either first few listens but I was driving and it came on and it was like a shotgun blast to my heart.

As u can see this album is amazing.

I tried to be as unbias as possible but this is how I feel about this album.

I just love the melting pot of different styles represented on each album, first and foremost...

I mean you go from sing-along Dani California, to the beautifully melodic and uplifting Snow, then the ever funky and catchy Charlie,etc...

All musical styles on the two albums are all the things the Chilis have touched on, and even mastered once before...but theres so much depth, and dare I say maturity to these albums, its amazing : ok:

i really dont get whats so good bout this new album. its too slow and weak (term not to be taken as-crap muscians-crap lyrics)

I haven't gotten Stadium Arcadium yet, but will. My question to you is this:

Is it an album that has 20 something excellent songs or is it an album that should have been condensed into one CD with 15 or 16 songs?

Could they have removed some weaker shit to focus on just one album?

People are always putting their " Illusion " single album wishes together on these sites, but I always thought the way the Illusions were released
was fantastic. Is this album needlessly 2 discs, or not?

Its incredible and If there is a filler song on the record, I havent heard it.

So far around half the songs on each CD I am struggling to get into. However I really think I'm going to need a few listens, like a lot of albums I think this is one of those that may need a few listens for some people.

It took me 4 listens all the way through, each CD.

Very good album, Frusciante has really upped the ante.

I have to say though, imagine what it would have been like as a single? (much like UYI, an all time classic I believe)

Singer Anthony Kiedis was born and lived in Michigan for part of his childhood.  (He alternated from Hollywood with his dad to Michigan with his mother) and he went there many times when he was having trouble with drugs, or for holidays, etc.

D as much as I disagree with you, and I'm from Kentucky also... I'm living here now, I must say I don't think that S.A. is that good.

The album overall gets a 8.0 from me, but it's not as you say it is.

Mars is growing on me no doubts...it's just that going from the sheer happy and cheerful Jupiter to Mars can be a bit of a shock sometimes.... :-\

me n' some buddies drank a case and got blazed and cruised around D.C. listening to some tracks of this album.  The only one that really stood out was Snow (Hey Oh) but that's a really great song.  It's funny cuz this was before the whole Chili Peppers copying Petty thing started and I don't remember which song we were listening to in my blazed/kind of drunk haze, but I remember just being like whoa these guys sound a lot like Tom Petty on this album and every1 agreeing with me.  Whatever some people need to chill out when people say that they sound the same.  They do, I'm not saying they were trying to rip them off, but there's no denying that the first verse was intentionally made to sound like Petty's song.

Dude when A GNR guitarist writes a riff anywhere close to "Under The Bridge" Which is one of the greatest riffs ever written, then u can talk that kind of shit.

U then tack on the absolute amazing other riffs and songs he has written, throw in his diversity.

Thats the key thing here, diversity.

Frusciante can not only play Rock Guitar, he can play funk and whatever other style u can dream of.

Truth of the matter is JF is not that great of a guitarist live at all.  For me, his riffs are simple and to the point.

How am I talking shit all I said is that I thought, judging by Bumble and Bucket and to some extent Robin and Richard, Axl wants someone who is technically more efficient than Frusciante.  I agreed with you that he was better creatively though.  Also judging by songs like Nightrain and November Rain Gn'r needs a dude who can lay down a really sick solo.  Frusciante does write better riffs than the guys in Gn'r, but none of his solos have really impressed me.  Maybe he would have been a good guy to replace Izzy or something, but i just dont think hed be a good guy to be a lead Guns n' Roses guitarist.  Belive me ur not bursting my bubble, ever since Buckethead left I haven't had too much faith in the guitar department of gnr.  U need to fucking not get so defensive about someone disagreeing with you then saying that they are talking shit. 

I think he's brilliant live, he usually lets it rip a lot more live, especially the last few years, than on the albums. like Flea says, John holds back a lot in the solos in the studio. it's just the way he likes to do things. he opened up to being more of a ripping lead guitarplayer on the last album however.

I am so sick of hearing people say that.  It's ignorance.  Did you know that Buckethead has a jazz-rock cd, a and two acoustic and classical flavored cds that contain no shredding.  No tapping, no sounding like a spaceship, that's on some of his releases, but not most.  Listen to any songs off of Population Override, Electric Tears, or Colma to see that he is actually much more versatile than Frusciante.  You can argue that Frusciante is better creatively, but sorry Buckethead is much more of a master of the instrument and I fucking hate it when people say he can only play fast, it's just pure ignorance and generalization.

Frusciante is definately a master of what he does, but overall (judging from his non-gnr projects) I think Buckethead is more of a master.

I was skeptical, because Dani California did not exactly thrill me, but I gotta say Frusciante's playing is great on these albums.

I think " Turn it Again " is an amazing tune to say the least

But I posted a thread last week about whether or not this album could and should be cut into one album and the responses seemed to be that no, it should'nt. I would disagree, and say that there are probably 15 great songs. Either way - I'm glad I bought it

15 of the best on one CD would be amazing but then again, I couldnt live without the other 13 so Im definitely glad its two CDS.

Look what Slash did back in the day was good.

But what has he done recently? Besides VR.

Even with Velvet Revolver he recycled the Sweet Child riff on a lot of the songs for example Fall To Pieces he recycles it.

I would rate John F as of right now better then Slash.

I would take him over Slash any day cause he can play lots of styles is young and doesn't seem like hes washed up.

Slash did some good riffs in his day but VR nothing at all awesome.

A whole lot of Frusciante bashing seems to be happening. I see this guy as the perfect guitarist for that band and as someone who just keeps getting better and better. He's got more feeling on Arcadium than I can remember on the other albums. Big Fan, personally.

This is a really good CD... but there are some songs that I just can't get into.  After giving it a few months, I'd say I still prefer By The Way to this CD... but that's one of my favourite CDs, so it's not really a put-down to Arcadium.

By The Way will probably always be my favorite album just not by the Chili's but one of my overall fav albums of all time.

I bought that album the week it came out, and it never really did anything for me except for the title track, and the Zephyr(sp?) Song...just too slow and not nearly as funky and edgy as Californication... :drool:

I think that's primarily why I adore SA so much, because it returns more to their classic styles extremely noticeable on Californication, and after Blood Sugar Sex MagiK, Californication is easily my favorite Chili Peppers record.

By The Way in my opinion is tricky.

If u are in the mood for a good time and are in an extremely happy place u probably wont find it as appealing as u would if u were absolutely crushed and heartbroken.

It came out right after I went through all the crazy stuff I went through in my life, Losing a fiancee, finding out the kid I thought I had with her for almost a year wasnt even mine etc etc etc.

Those songs just had an "estranged" quality about them that absolutely comforted and helped me out through all that.

D - I'm surprised you're able to talk about this kind of stuff in a place like this, but either way, I can relate to how you can completely connect to music when you need to -

That's exactly why I never really got into that album probably...I didn't have a life experience to go along with it's release.

Plus, it came out in the summer time if memory serves me correctly, and I was probably hoping for an uplifting record much alike Californication and was unfortunately dissapointed :-\

I read an interview in "Rolling Stone" and Tom Petty says he knows it wasnt intentional or with any kind of malice so he isnt gonna do anything. he named a whole bunch of songs that were similiar and said it was no big deal to him.

Funny, I heard a new Tom Petty song, and the DJ mentioned it sounds like George Thoroughgood (One bourbon, scotch & beer song) sure enough it did. Same guitar chunk riff. And I remember Thoroughgood had a song (Get a haircut and get a real job) which had a controversy because it sounded like a 70's 1 hit wonder song, and that did. So yeah, every couple years this happens.

I think beats & song repeat each other more often then we'd think, it's just that only occasionally do they repeat other songs which were hits. Most times they sound like unknown songs off an album forgotten.  There is a song on this RHCP CD which to me sounds like a Dead Milkmen song called "Born to Love Volcano's" I remember from years ago.

Good God, how f'n true.  "Dosed" is the soundtrack of a broken heart, many of ours it seems at the time...
And then there is the poetic bliss of Universally Speaking "Simply put, I saw your lovestream flow".


And I have to disagree about the "no-filler" claim regarding Stadium Arcadium.  This is the laziest producing job Rick Rubin has ever done.  The band was challenged on nothing.  Half-complete studio jams that didn't materialize into full songs abound, the "funk" is forced (and apparently only present to appease a frustrated Flea, who saw his input minimalized on By The Way), the majority of the songwriting is either dumbed down or astonishingly obtuse (even for Kiedis, and that's saying something) and the sublime pop is too sparse.  Truly a drop in constistency from their last two gems.  Could you imagine if this had been a 3-disc affair, as was originally intentioned?? 

After the near-perfect By The Way, I was severely dissapointed.  :(

Additionally, if you want to hear top-notch recent Rubin, I suggest you check out Neil Diamond's 12 Songs (no joke) and Cash's American V.  The songs are better, too.

I tell u what "Out Of Range" a Bside off By The Way is one of the best Chili pepper songs ever.

Midnight is my favorite off of " By the Way "

Wow, I'm suprised you guys associate By The Way with a "heartbroken" vibe. ?The songs are definetaly filled with emotion, but I've always thought of it as a really laid back summer album. ?It seems to me like the best way to enjoy it is on the beach or driving around in your car during the summer... ?The melody's make it good for listening when you're really chilled out. ?Strange how we can enjoy it so much for completely different reasons.

Dont get me wrong, not all the songs are relatable to heartbreak.

HOWEVER:

When I am down or was down

"Dosed" is the closest thing ever to "Estranged" for me, this song does the trick.

Universally Speaking fills u with hope after you had a good cry.

Zephyr Song I want for my wedding song, it feels me with great hope.

Dont Forget Me is great when u are angry to just scream and thrash around to.

Venice Queen is like a goodbye to a previous life of misery and a hello to a new beginning.

Warm Tape is also great for the hope of finding someone new.

Tear should've been a single, this song is so amazing and I never see anyone talk about it.
