This is inspired from my Fireaxe thread, among others. Basically, how often do you check out new bands? How often are they big media bands, and how often are they 1 man projects only 3 people know about? I check out about 5 new bands every month, and about 1/3 of them are small projects, 1/10 are big media, and the rest are in the middle. That's generally how it goes for me.

If I hear something I like I'll take a listen or if I hear good things. Liek Brand New Sin.. New band pretty much. Saw them live with BLS.. Become an instant fan. The band "The Sword" is new and pretty damn good. I got into Shinedown as well after hearing them cover "Simple Man". I love the chance to hear new music.. Add a few more CDs to the collection..

Is that a new band? I'll have to check 'em out.  Wink

I don't know where to find new music. I've discovered a few anti-mainstream bands through college radio and on ares.

I feel sorry for you now.  no Stick to Nevermore, Pantera, Iced Earth, Fear Factory, and Annihilator if you really want some good post-thrash. Maybe check out metalcore as well. The Haunted are mediocre.

You know, i dont find anything amusing in the NEW music, it sucks! but if we talk about like.....Soulfly (wich is not new) but their last album "prophecy" 2004 is a piece of art,  It has every type of influence that u can think of.
If we remember Max Cavalera (leader of the band and Ex Sepultura) is brazilian, so he once said:" When i grew up i wanted to be a soccer player, but when i saw Queen live in Rio De Janeiro , wich was my very first rock concert at that time, i changed my mind and i wanted to play rock instead"   ok  Thanx Queen!
So "Prophecy" is an album that has Metal Reggae , Bosanova, progressive and all kinds of melodies you will not believe, its an awesome album, i love it, I know Soulfly its not "the new music" BUT it has the new music atmosphere influences.

All the time. I'm constantly reading reviews on bands I've never heard of and watching The Wedge on Much Music. The stuff I hear on radio rarely appeals to me(yes WALK I realies U2 is a staple on radio). That's not to say there isn't good stuff to be heard on radio it's just that more often than not it's very forgettable stuff to me. A good way to find new music is to join a forum of a band that you're not neccessarily a huge fan of and get other people's opinion as to what's good music. I do that at The Pixies site quite often. Also I browse on myspace type of sites. I don't have an account but it's also a good way to see what peope are into and find new interesting bands. College radio is a great way to find out about new bands but sometimes I swear the dj's play total shit simpley to try and look cool/different. Some of the crap they play is aweful and I find myself thinking there is no way they actually like this shit, they're just doing it to look "indie" The Indie scene pisses me off because I feel the majority of the people in it are their for the image rather than the music.?It's like the new "grunge". It's become a cliche.? Also I get alot of new bands through djing which is cool.? I rarely buy a cd without dowloading some songs first. If I like what I hear than I definately support the band by buying the disc, but if I don't like it than I useually delete the stuff off my computer. I don't agree with downloading for the sake of owning but it's definately a great way to do research. Wink

It looks like mallcore is out in force in this thread.  no Soulfly is a terrible band, just like The Haunted. Don't get yourself down, though. Just work your way back. Forget about Soulfly and look at Max's old band, Sepultura. Everything Max did with Sepultura BEFORE the Chaos A.D. album is classic. The 4 albums you need are Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia, Beneath The Remains, and Arise. It's ok. I used to like mallcore before I discovered better bands. It helped me get into good music, so think of Soulfly as a learning experience.

Here is some good (relatively) new music you should enjoy. It usually takes metal bands a while to peak, so 5-10 year old bands are new.

Slough Feg (Celtic metal)
Destroyer 666 (blackened thrash metal)
Battlecry (power metal)
Grom (black metal)
Sunn O))) (you just have to hear it to know Wink)
Fireaxe (progressive metal)
Dream Evil (power metal)
Finntroll (black metal)

Most of the new bands I listen to are from the 80's and 90's that I never previously knew about. Don't start complaining about a lack of good new music until you've exhausted all the old stuff. I don't even think it's possible to run out of good, old music, but I enjoy good, new music as well.

I'm always looking for something new, because when I do turn on the radio or a music video channel I never hear anything original.

It appears there is a really creative movement happening throughout Canada right now. 3 of my favorite bands right now are from there: Stars, Arcade Fire, and The New Pornographers (Thanks, Ignatius) ok

Soulfly aren't bad at all, their latest album is brilliant.

Check out Nevermore, they're probably the most muscially talented band I've heard. Also see Dragonforce and Opeth.

The Haunted mallcore?? WTF. Their first two albums are brilliant thrashers, I'd imagine if you're a fan of Slayer you'd most likely dig them as well.

Finntroll (black metal)

I don't know if the really early stuff is black metal, but the songs I've heard are far from that genre. I'd rather call it polka metal or folk metal.

I don't even think it's possible to run out of good, old music, but I enjoy good, new music as well.

Now this I agree with. People who complain there's no good stuff out there "anymore" just aren't skilled enough to find it.

Ok, calling them mallcore was a bit strong.  Wink The politically correct description would be post-thrash. Nevermore is great post-thrash, but I just never really got into The Haunted. I generally prefer old school thrash riffs (Slayer's first 5 albums) to modern chug chug groove. Groove doesn't always mean mallcore (Pantera kicks ass), but it definitely sets off alarms in my head. When Slayer turned to groove, it killed the band.

I don't know if the really early stuff is black metal, but the songs I've heard are far from that genre. I'd rather call it polka metal or folk metal.

They're definitely a unique band. Black metal can mean just about anything, though, from Mercyful Fate to Gorgoroth. It was the closest label I could think of. Besides, black metal usually integrates folk elements in the music, anyway, so I think that base is covered.

Now this I agree with. People who complain there's no good stuff out there "anymore" just aren't skilled enough to find it.

 smoking  ok

As for Soulfly, they are responsible for the whole JUMP DA FUCK UP saying that no one should take seriously at all. And come on, the backpack gimmick just has to stop.  rofl I'll stick to classic Sepultura. I don't hate Soulfly because Cavalera has to pay the bills, but I definitely don't like them.
