1). Trust me, it takes far more than 10mins to edit a web page like that. If you did manage it in the first place, then you'd have to alter the address in the bar on the screen shot because the edited page would have to be on your computer.

2). That picture has not been edited, I'm 99% on that, I've had a very close look.

Edit: Rocket Queen, when I click on your link, I get that message, but if I type it into my address bar, it works as a normal search (no CD of course)

I wouldn't copy the whole web site or the page...i'd take a screenshot and then edit the one line using the same font. And you would have no chance of telling if it was edited.

10 minutes no sweat.  yes

I would modify the page because it would be more believable. You can tell if it's been modified unless someone one has been very, very, very careful with a picture. As far as I can tell, the screenshot is not edited.

didn't time it, but approx 10 minutes...(yeah you could tell it's edited coz of the spacing but if i could be arsed to perfect it  you wouldn't)

had to jpeg coz it was too big for my free site.

(BTW I never said this was edited - i believe it wasn't - I was just giving a reference for how long it would take to do something like that)

One point to make:

Notice in the "CD" screenshot it says "Popular Music:See all 30 results"?

Notice if you do a search now, it says "Popular Music:See all 30 results"?

Now, to my logic, if CD had really been added, even for a few seconds, shouldn't the "CD" screenshot say "Popular Music: See all 31 results?

I'm not saying the screenie isn't real, but given that the count doesn't change...I have my doubts.

For any other posters out there....I have a request (we'll see if it's honored).  IF you come across a page like this in the future, do 2 things to help us verify it's legitamacy.  First, in IE, click File, the Save As.  Give the page a name and save it to your HD.  Second, click Tools, then View Source.  Then, when the source code window opens, click File, then Save As, give the file a name (gnrpage.txt or something like that) and save THAT to your HD as well.  Once you do that, we can pretty much get verificiation if the page is legit or not from the results.

Xavier,
Actually, geocities was just the place they were "hosting" the screenshot.  The original poster claims they have a screenshot of a search of CDNOW, showing CD with a release date of May 18th, '04.  They further claim that the item has now been removed, and further searches don't bring it up.

 rofl

I think that 'related items' don't really have to be related.. just what another customer who bought that item also bought

perhaps same thing with searches...

If the screenshot had been a JPG it would have been more in the right direction so to speak, but it's very very easy to take a bmp shot, modify the damn thing and put up again. Ive done it a few times with other things. No biggie.

Actually, I've been doing a bit of testing on the 'related searches' thing.  It appears that that information is hardcoded into the database by the DBA (DataBase Admin) - They are NOT generated automatically via relational links.  So, in summary, some DBA actually put 'Chinese Democracy' in there as a search term - but the big problem is, we have no way of knowing when.

(For those curious how I tested this - basically, I did about 20 searches for both more mainstream and some more obscure things.. the really obscure dont have ANY relationals  - even though I know they would based upon related terms if the DB built them automatically)

I wish it was true! but it isn't...

If you save the site you can easily replace Use your Illusion I into Chinese Democracy...
But then the file would be on your pc... The stupid fuck here didn't host the file and just opened it on his pc!
If he put off his statusbar, it wouldn't matter but he didn't (again: stupid fuck)

So when you look in the right bottomcorner of the screenshot you see "My Computer" as where it's supposed to say "Internet"...

Damnit, I hate fucking fuckos who do shit like this!

Sorry, getting a bit angry here

Totally right Evil Ash!

Plus, it's not well done, take a look at that:

He hasn't underlined "Chinese Democracy" title, like the others... he underlined a space with the title.

I hate those kind of guys who has nothing to do except making bullshits like that.

Mods:
Might I suggest changing the title to FAKE:(Subject)?

And, whatever disiplinary actions you see fit, of course.

Hey, it's easy to understand why the made the relation between Guns N'Roses and Chinese Democracy.

Since 99 we know for sure that Guns N'Roses next album is being called Chinese Democracy. That's it. Amazon just related GNR and Chinese Democracy because of that.

Just as an FYI, I'm just about positive that "Chinese Democracy" has been a related search on Amazon since the Greatest Hits was first on there last year before the aborted Novemeber release.
I've seen it there, at least, since November.

To add to the B.S. factor:

I did a few searches on confirmed upcoming releases (Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, etc.) and when the title does show up, there is never a release date posted after the title.
