I know you are speaking in generalities, but since I am the one who first brought up The Birdcage I will say this, yes it was a comedy and Nathan Lane was pretty over the top, but as I recall that movie Robin Williams played it straight, for lack of a better term, and was just as good as Lane in the film.

While I agree with what your saying, liking this movie or Will and Grace doesnt make any one more homophobic either. I laughed at the movie because it was well written, and the acting was good. Not because they were making fun of a segment of the gay community.

You are right, I should have said more or less homophobic.  But I still think that as a society, that is where we want to keep gays.

Ok, first off, I'm not talking about you personally because I don't know you.  I'm speaking in generalities.  But what I said stands, there are reasons why certain things interest us and others don't.  Just because you aren't consciously aware of what those reasons are, doesn't mean they don't exist.  That's why they are unconscious, you can't access them with your waking mind.

im with chineseblues on this one...

as far as i am aware psychology is just based on theories that have been proven to work through statistical or visual observation...but that doesnt mean these theories are exactly how the human mind works...you can prove that my height correlates with Microsoft profits over the last 30 years but that certainly doesnt mean i am in cahoots with them (honestly its not true Tongue) so there is no connection...you can justify lots of theories based on false premises

so to me it makes no difference if you want to watch it or not as long as there is no discrimination then its ok with me...

i do agree with the comment about gays on american tv...i must admit i never noticed that before...but again sometimes that down to gays accepting those type of roles...unlike those actors in brokeback mountain i guess...

i do have a problem with people trying to push others into a certain pattern of behaviour, like those that have been made in this thread...you should watch this film or you are out of touch, or youre an underground homosexual or whatever...i have the facts, i make my choice...some peoplejust cant accept that...

Thats the mindset towards any minority, if they are funny, they are safe and can be accepted.
Chris Rock may curse his ass off but once he started with Saturday Night Live he was one of the most popular "Black" entertainers in the USA. If you would have asked these same people what they thought of him when he played "Pookie" in New Jack City, I would be willing to bet that a large majority of them would not have liked him then.

Please don't misunderstand me.  I'm not trying to push or coerce anyone into seeing this movie.  For one thing, there is no point.  If you bully somerone into watching they will automatically dislike it.  I'm simply interested in people, and why they make the choices they do.  I don't  think that if you don't watch Brokeback Mountain, you must hate gay people.  Its not as simple as that.  (At least not for most people.)  As I said before, I won't watch movies about retarded people.  I could say, I'm just not interested.  But I know there is more to it than that - and I don't hate them, I actually work with them.

And you are correct, psychology is not a science, as it is virtually unprovable.  But sometimes we still get it right. Wink

If I were to push anyone to do anything, it would be to explore your own mind and motivations.  Don't be afraid to look at yourself honestly (you don't have to tell anyone what you find).  That's really the only way to grow and expand your mind...you have to know where you are starting from.

I think we (heterosexuals) like to see gay people placed in easily identifiable boxes.  They are not threatening, and we can laugh at them, and sort of keep them in a place where we are comfortable with them.  At least in America, that is how we have accepted gays into the mainstream - as a joke.

That is an interesting statement..........

yeah, same thing with Mohammed Ali in the past.  People were terrified of him because he wasnt meek or funny (the two pigeonholes that blacks had to fit into in the past).  I find him really fascinating.

But how much of the mindset is perpetuated by the miniority itself?  In one extreme, there's flamers letting it all hang out in cringeworthy gay parades, and in the other extreme, men on the down low who hide it and we get cases like what jessica described.  Both these extremes make for better news and press, and hence the average gay whose neither a flamer or on the down low, and doesnt lisp or have limp hands is ignored.

Read this thread and what I gathered from it , as being probably only the only open gay guy for yrs on these boards, and there was a time when I gave a shit aobut perveption, but at the end of the day its a movie, and I like alot of the post that are here.

I really have nothing to say or try to talk sych, I read chinese blues post and I have to agree, he simply isnt interseted in the subject matter, and that is cool . Bottom line is  who the fuck cares who you sleep with.

Apperntly alot of people who want tpo discuss it

Its a great movie for sure, and thought provoking, and some can see its true message. But at the same time , hey why not an action movie with the main action character who is gay but kicks ass. .

Well I'm sure you know why.

Anyway, then we'd have people saying  " Why would anyone want to watch a movie about a gay action hero?"

I just question people who are afraid of gay people.

It just seems so neanderthal in the 21st century to be fearful of Gays.

they are human like everyone else
Not only that, gay people have existed since the beginning of human race, it's nothing new at all. These homopobes are afraid if they do accept gays, they'll "turn gay".
