Prince Video Sparks Racism Debate
Oct 15, 8:15 AM EST

The Associated Press

Watch the video
Prince's music: Listen & download

Prince is once again stirring up some controversy. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is generating debate with a new music video depicting an Arab-American teenage girl imagining herself as a suicide bomber.

The "Cinnamon Girl" video ? created mostly in the Twin Cities and released to music television channels this week ? has been criticized on Fox News and CNN.

"Prince intended for it to spark some dialogue," said the video's director, Phil Harder, of Minneapolis-based Harder-Fuller Films.

The clip features Keisha Castle-Hughes, 14, the Oscar-nominated actress from the movie "Whale Rider." She plays a schoolgirl who witnesses a terrorist attack and then experiences racism from classmates and others.

The racism pushes her to dream about carrying a bomb into an airport.

"Cinnamon Girl of mixed heritage, never knew the meaning of color lines," Prince sings. "9/11 turned that all around, when she got accused of this crime."

Prince will not comment on the clip because he prefers that people make up their own mind, his publicist said.

Representatives for MTV, VH1 and BET channels said their programmers were aware of the clip's content. MTV plans to begin airing it next week on MTVU, its universities-only channel, to gauge the reaction of viewers. VH1 and BET are undecided.

Rana Abbas, deputy director of the Midwest chapter of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee in Dearborn, Mich., voiced her support after seeing the video Thursday.

"It was shocking, but in a good way," Abbas said. "Prince is the first major recording artist to address the prejudice and issues that (Arab-Americans) are facing after 9/11, and I think he has done it in a very powerful way."

The New York Post said it "might be the most tasteless video ever." Fox News commentator John Gibson suggested that Prince is "causing trouble," and CNN anchor Kyra Phillips said it is "shaking and rumbling the entertainment industry."

Rolling Stone magazine music editor Joe Levy said the video should be put in context, and the song says that Arab-Americans were victims of hate after Sept. 11, 2001.

Harder said the lyrics show Prince is "sincere in wanting to speak to the times." He also emphasized that the video "resolves itself peacefully."

It's a good song with a good video (very well shot, edited etc), but bith have a very one sided view of the whole war on terror and the alleged 'Islamaphobia'.

Great - more pretenious stuff from musicians - i guess Prince's album sales have slumped and he's in need of a PR boost - a controversial video, what a novel idea!

Prince had a tour and a song called Xenophobia this kind of is on that lines.

If i were on a plane and a bunch of islamic people got on id be scared and that isnt fair.

Its like we are damning a whole race of people based on horrible acts committed by a minority.

Prince deserves credit speaking out on this.

Prince's Musicology has been his best selling record since Diamonds and Pearls, he is officially back

Prince doesnt have to do stuff for publicity

since the 90's with the name change Prince has preached about "the truth" this video in his opinion is the truth which is why he made it.

Listen Prince is the greatest musician to ever grace the planet earth *im not sayin the most popular* but over all instrument, song, style, diversity, prolificness he cannot be matched by one single individual.

He doesnt need publicity and doesnt do stuff for personal gain, he is sending a message that needs to be sent.

Today is kind of like a mini Chinese Democracy day for me.

Im gonna wake up, throw on some clothes and a beanie and head straight to Best Buy and pick up a CD i am sooooooo anxious to hear.

Yes its time for a new Prince CD.

his last CD "musicology" went double platinum got 4/5 stars and Prince won a couple grammys.

This CD 3121 is getting rave reviews. It runs the musical gauntlet, every style is featured and it is suppose to showcase some of his greatest guitar playing yet.

I cannot wait.

I know this is a GNR board but is anyone else picking this up?

I might have to check this one out... Prince is an exceptional exceptional guitarist.

One of my favourite songs is Bambi, though... total rocker!

Let me know what it's like I might get it. I'm only just starting to listen to Prince. "Purple Rain" is my favourite song by him.

I picked up 3121?

The good news is that it's a step up from Musicology(which sucked). My favorite song is the title track 3121, real funk with a little experimentation. The SNL performance of Fury destroys the album version, which is typical of Prince? ever heard the One Nite Alone version of Joy In Repetition? A whole bunch of songs could've been cool? I rate the album 6.7/10

either "The  Hits 1" Or The Hits 2 if u want a variety of his styles.

Overall best album is probably "Purple Rain" Or "Sign Of The Times" although my favs are "The Gold Experience" and "emancipation

Cool thing about Prince is, he doesnt have one style.

He is R and B, Funk,Jazz,Pop,Rock and even has metal riffs and he can hold his own soloing with any guitar hero u can name.

buy Purple Rain and remember while listening that he is playing every single instrument by himself.

3121 is like the Chinese Democracy demos.

First listen I fuckin hated 3121

second listen, I fuckin hated 3121

third listen it was not very good

4th listen it was ok

now I fuckin Love it.

Prince is soooooooo complex that his hooks dont jump off at u immediately, it takes time to truly absorb everything goin on which is why I love him so much.

album is getting better with every listen.
