Estranged............The Guns n' Roses Story

« on: March 22, 2004, 02:09:27 PM »

LiveERA ended up #42

Seems that the UK loves 'em at #2

Think they can end up in the USA top ten........ with a boycott by the fans?

Most likely Usher and The Vines will enter in the top 5.

I'll tell you one thing, there's a lot of people have gone on about how nobody cares about Guns N' Roses, Chinese Democracy won't sell, blah, blah.

With the album number 2 in the UK, and if it goes in the top 10 in the US, with hardly any promotion except some adverts, I don't think there's a problem with the selling power of the GNR name.

I was wondering about this also. When will we find out how it did? I think it would be great if it broke into the top 20 and amazing if it broke into the top ten. Just think how good CD will sell then if people are buying an album if no new songs on it. But this just shows again how Guns N' Roses music is timeless and will never die.

my guess is it  will move about 35k the first week.

Nikki Sixx new band sold about that as well.

It will be out in the states in a few hours...Im going to buy it just to look it over and see what its all about..

It wont do as well here as it is doing in the UK and Europe.  They are not as popular here anymore like they are in Europe, South America, and Asia..

I've never understood the varied popularity in different countries. Living in the UK and having visited Europe often, I've always thought Europe really like GNR but in the UK hardly anyone is interested in them.

I'm quite amazed by GH reaching no. 2 here. I also always thought they were more popular in the US than here. They are never mentioned here, they are never played on the radio, when I go to see a tribute band there are far fewer people there than when there are for other cover bands. They just never seemed to be mentioned by anyone here.

They will SELL ALOT of these to the average people who dont listen or follow the band for 9 dollars... The Impulse Buyers will move this CD.....

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I'm not sure how to compare album popularity either side of the Atlantic, but if GH sold 130,000 in one week in the UK, a country with a fraction of the population of the US, what makes you think it will sell around 35,000 and come in in the 20s or 30s?

It take sales of about 150,000 to get in the top ten, so having sold 130,000 in the UK, am I being naive thinking logic suggests it will get into the top ten?

I'll tell you one thing, there's a lot of people have gone on about how nobody cares about Guns N' Roses, Chinese Democracy won't sell, blah, blah.

Yeah, but dont forget a key factor here: All of the hits that people love guaranteed on this album.  Thats why people are buying it.  And dont forget that Guns N' Roses selling this record is not the Guns N' Roses selling any new original records.  Im not saying GNR will fail to sell because of these factors, Im just pointing out the obvious reasons this record is selling.

I think Greatest Hits will end up in the top ten...Im thinking between 3 and 7.  Its selling pretty well from what I understand...a friend of mine whos not really into the band at all (like many people, just loves the hits) surprised me when he said he bought the album - without any motivation from me.  The promotion of this album has been better than expected too.

Itll be nice to see Guns N' Roses (especially this GNR) so high on the charts again.  beer

If they would have sold 130.000 in the US this week, they would have entered at #2. Norah Jones is #1 with 147.000 copies sold. #2 is Cassidy with 117.000 copies sold. Josh Groban is # 10 with only 66.000 copies sold.

ONE-DAY SALES:
USHER PACKS THE AISLES

Arista Soul Man?s Confessions Driving Consumers to Retail

March 24, 2004

It?s the rise of the house of Usher once more. This time around, though, it?s looking like a major leap ahead for the Arista R&B artist, as well as a definite #1 on next week?s chart.
As expected, according to early reports from national accounts, Usher?s new album, Confessions, is on track to sell a huge amount in its first week. What's unexpected, however, is that the album's first-week number looks like it will come in around 900k, and possibly more. Previous guesses had pegged it at around 700k.

While difficult to gauge after just one day on sale, most think the album will come in shy of a million, even if it continues to outperform throughout the week?though prognosticators say nothing is out of the question when a record is this big.

The major sales surprise follows a major radio story, where second single "Burn" is following in the wake of #1 barn-burner "Yeah," which features rappers Ludacris and Lil Jon.

Early success for Confessions represents a final feather in the cap for outgoing Arista execs and staffers including EVP/GM Larry Mestel and promotion head Steve Bartels, who are rightfully proud of pulling off such a big set-up and release under lame-duck conditions.

Responsibility for the project now falls to Joe Riccitelli and his Jive promotion squad, who will work with Usher co-managers Tommy Mottola and Jonnetta Patton, who also happens to be Usher?s mom.

Meanwhile, the second-highest debut on next week?s chart will be Now 15 (EMM), which looks headed for a first week of over 300k.

And coming out of left field is Bad Boy/Universal?s Carl Thomas, whose Let?s Talk About It is surprising everyone with first-day action pointing to a 150k week.

Vying for fourth-highest debut, meanwhile, are N.E.R.D.?s Fly or Die (Virgin) and Guns N? Roses? Greatest Hits (Geffen), each of which is likely to log a first-week total exceeding 120k.

Next week, it?s all about Janet (Virgin) and J-Kwon (So So Def/Arista).

It will, but I disagree about the Vines being garbage.  And while they might be cool "modern" rock, theyve never been huge sellers.  None of these bands really are.

Booker, my post probably should have been directed at Falcon, but he isn't around. These "modern" rock bands don't sell a lot. They just get a lot of hype from critics desperate for a truly great band.....none of which we have seen since the mid nineties. This is precisely the reason I don't want VR to go for that modern rock format (which they clearly have after hearing the sound of Slither). I believe the next big band to really make a difference will be more of a classic rock act. Just my opinion. Smiley

I dont know, I think youre a little too hung up on labels...

Call "Slither" 'modern rock' if you want, but all I hear is a cool riff, good vocals and a great guitar solo.  If thats "modern rock" then so be it - I could care less what its called.

I hate the labels, that is my hang up! It is all rock and there is no difference. That being said, I wish Velvet would have gone for a little nastier sound...more raw like the White Stripes (sort of) or older 70's punk ala The Stooges. Slash may be too good of a player for his own good at this point...too much the professional. Undecided

i know three people that bought the GH cd today. none of which i ever thought would.

i noticed a big display at target and saw people buying it there too. first week sales could be strong.

if CD were to come out in a month or two, this GH would probably help its sales. cause alot of people are thinking about gnr again. AND realizing how great there were, and how there's nothing out there like them.

This album is for casual fans, who only want one or two GNR albums.

The interesting thing is this album proves which countries GNR is biggest in, and the answer seems to be Norway, who woulda thunk it.

I'm back madagas, I was sentenced to a week in Ohio for work...as Courtney Love says in her blistering single "Mono" , "Did you miss me?"

I digress..

I'll disagree on The Vines as well, hardly garbage but not a big seller, stateside at least.

GH should debut in the Billboard Top 40 somewhere, then fall quickly out of sight.

Well actually according to that Hits Magazine article on page 1 the Greatest Hits is battling N.E.R.D's "Fly or Die" for the #4 spot in the charts. Think about it,N.E.R.D formerly known as the Neptunes is a group of musicians who are very "in" in the market and in the record industry and they're battling a band who hasn't released an album since 1993?Man you gotta admit,it is pretty amazing.

Second week sales on GH's records normally fall off dramatically 2nd week on, I expect the same with this..

It's an impressive chart position nonetheless..

I think (hope) Axl is sitting on awesome stuff and waiting for the market to be just right again. Think about it, the tide shifted and is slowly ebbing back to eighties-ish rock or at least its becoming accepted again. I think it will be just a bit more time and then he will come out and open a giant can of awakening on the music industry like he did in the eighties. He - they revamped it all then and gave it a good kick in the ass. I believe it will happen again.  Because we all know Axl is the best ass kicker musically.
