I'm a small town white boy...

« on: November 20, 2009, 09:53:26 PM »

Okay folks.  I've been out drinking with my father-in-law, so I make no promises regarding clarity, but I just wanted to note that, as of this December, I will have been a GN'R fan for 22 years, having received Appetite for Christmas in the winter of 1987.  It's been a long, strange, exceedingly complicated trip, but, let's face it--Axl has treated us all to the best of all possible of down-and-dirty, helluva time, kick-ass trips that anybody could have sent our way.  So thanks, Axl, for answering questions we didn't even know we had, and for giving us tonics that helped us through every era, whether it be the tease of Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, the  grit of Appetite, the reckless abandon of Lies, the over-the-top perfection of UYI I&II, the temporary (but indescribably fun) fix of TSI, the unexpected but rockin' fun of Live Era, or (most important) vindication of Chinese Democracy.  Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, Steven, Matt, Dizzy, Gilby, Tracii, Tracy, Roberta, Teddy, Ole, Rob, Paul, Bucket, Josh, Brain, Robin, Richard, Tommy, Frank, Chris, Bumble, and DJ--thanks for everything.  Sincerely.  Here's to the next tour, the next album, and another decade of kicking my ass.

Me too! I can remember being a senior in high school and hearing Appetite for the first time. Driving around in a friend's car. I had heard Jungle on headbangers ball, but was just blown away when listening to the cassette for the first time.

And I remember my first time listening to Lies.

Then being at college and the radio station played both albums, every song . . . that was another magical moment! The first time Dont Cry came on . . . Yesterdays . . . November Rain . . . . Estranged . . . . even Breakdown was cool . . . Civil War . . .. Coma ...... it was just awesome.

Good post.

21 for me..........I remember during the summer of '88 I was just a youngster hanging at my local eatery which had a jukebox and pop-a-shot machine.  I remember one day someone had played Sweet Child O' Mine and I was awestruck, like completely blown away.  Up until then I was still living in my parents musical shadow and at that moment I established my own musical taste.  Rag Doll by Aerosmith was the other big song at the time!

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
