« on: October 10, 2006, 10:16:20 AM »

OK...so I thought we could make a list of remaining Tuesdays and start a process of elimination.? As of today, there are 12 Tuesdays left (wow...has it only been one week since the announcement?):

October 10
October 17
October 24
October 31

November 7
November 14
November 21
November 28

December 5
December 12
December 19
December 26

I would say that as of right now, October is pretty much out of the question...possibly the 31st, but doubtful.? That eliminates 4 possible dates, leaving us with 8.? Jarmo and Mysterion have confirmed that November 21st is out as well...down to 7.? I agree that releasing anything AFTER Christmas also seems unlikely...though many retailers say that the time directly after Christmas is even busier than before.? So go ahead and knock off December 26th as well.? That leaves us with six realistic dates:

November 7
November 14
November 28

December 5
December 12
December 19

So we can eliminate half of the possible dates at this point.? My guess is that the announcement will come at least a month before the date, so by next Tuesday we can probably start eliminating even more.

I'm still pulling for November 14th!!!!

Peace,

SBM

what we really need (and I'm much too lazy to do it) is the information on what other major CDs are being released in those weeks.  It's pretty standard -- although why do I write that, does GnR management do anything standard? -- to place your release when you are not going head-to-head against another major release, particularly if it pulls the same demographic buyer.  It's the same thing with movie releases.

It's essential that CD open at No. 1 because the press will, of course, label it a "triumph" if it debuts at No. 1 and a "disaster" if it comes in at No 2..  For silly reasons, the number of units sold for the first week often does not carry as much weight as the opening week chart position in the mainstream press.  So, a No. 1 debut at 155,000 units (on a slow week) receives more press than a No. 3 debut at 220,000 units on a busy week.  The reason why the mainstream press matters is because it helps create "buzz" in ticket sales, more CD sales, etc...

So, I would HAVE to figure that even if not GnR's management, certainly Universal is paying a very careful eye to the week that is most likely to generate a guaranteed No. 1 debut and also play well in the long-run.  I think the only album that they may be concerned with, believe it or not, is Jay-Z's "secret" comeback CD, which many in the industry predict may break the all-time first-week sales record.  So, give a wide berth around that release and any other really big ones and we might narrow it down.

Outside of that information, I think December 5th is a good bet.  It's a little too close to the holiday shopping season, but most of the December releases are greatest hits/holiday releases and this may be interesting counterprogramming.  It still leaves plenty of time for Xmas shopping.  With a single dropping in early November, that might be enough to help the ticket sales for the early leg?

I'm going with the 14th. Maybe it's wishful thinking but since I'm going to a show on the 15th, it would be fucking sweet!

Lets start a pool. Not that I'm condoning internet gambling for you Americans (*looks around shifty-eyed for overpaid FBI agents with too much time on their hands*), but the rest of us... Wink.

It WON'T be december 5th, Eminem (Interscope's savior and cash cow) is releasing an album that day. ?No chance in hell that Interscope wants two of their releases on the same day. ?If BigBoss is right (and I have no reason to doubt him), then it's one of three dates. ?11/28. 12/12, 12/19
