Oxygen Tanks!

Not sure if this should be in this section or if its been asked before so if it has I apologise but I was wondering if anyone Knows anything about Axl's oxygen tanks. What are they for? does he use it to catch his breath at gigs? I remember seeing a clip about the GNR + Metallica gigs in 92, duff was giving a tour around back stage and pointed out axl's oxegen tanks so it's not a recent thing that he needs it now because he's a bit older. Has he always needed oxygen during gigs?
