Post by: Verse Chorus Verse on December 02, 2006, 09:14:58 PM
What would be the easiest song for an absolute beginner on the guitar? And not just Guns N' Roses, but any band.

use drop d tuning, cos then you only need one finger to play loads of songs! (Slither for example)

Make sure you know power chords before any 'proper' chords, new chords can take a while to get used to so its nice to have something to play in the meantime.

tune your low e string down a tone.

it should be an octave lower than your d string.

use drop d tuning, cos then you only need one finger to play loads of songs! (Slither for example)

Make sure you know power chords before any 'proper' chords, new chords can take a while to get used to so its nice to have something to play in the meantime.
How do you tune to Drop D? I've seen plenty of songs tuned in it but down know how to do it myself.

Tune you low E (top string) down to a D.  So then you have DADGBE.

Slither, Serial Killer, What I want (Chris Dautry with Slash).

But Remember, GNR plays a half step down.  So everything is flat from standard tuning.

Csharp = Dflat....

the way i drop d tune is pluck the top E string and the D string at the same time and then detune the top e until they resonate the same....its real easy to hear : ok:

Neemo, that is easy, if you have developed an ear, if not there yet, just use a tuner.  Wow, what a run on sentence.  I think a tuner is good so that they can see what is going on.

Title: Re: Easiest song on the guitar (For a beginner)
Post by: The Estranged MrFlashbax on May 10, 2007, 03:59:54 AM
its fun to learn songs by ear.. cuz after i play the intro to civil war, i can play the "look at your young men fighting.. look at your women crying.. look at your young men dying.. the way they've always done before..." and keep going with the song.. i can play the vocals (the ups and downs and melody i guess, i dunno what its called) on the guitar cuz i learned it by ear rather than by tabs.. its not that impressive to play for people but its fun to play nonetheless.

Title: Re: Easiest song on the guitar (For a beginner)
Post by: stolat on May 10, 2007, 04:04:37 AM
That sounds really good. So you play the vocal line note for note ("look at your young men....etc") and then rip into the chords for ("my hands are tied...)?

OR, Peter Frampton could distort notes via a tube thing that he could blow into - it was attached to his guitar. Listen to Frampton Comes Alive or Live (something like that). There is also a (Steiner?) guitar, very 80s in its look that had a distortion bar on it. But in the meantime, listen to Frampton...... : ok:

Sweet Child O' Mine...if you want to play just an acoustic version without the intro try this...for the first part there's just 3 chords D, C9 & G...get that first and then the chords change for the 'where do we go' bit at the end...they're like Em (where do we go) G (where do we go now) A (where to we go) followed by a C & D then back to Em...etc. It goes something like this

If this is a thread dedicated to easy songs. For beginners.
Why than people speak about crap like Civil War, Coma and Bucketheadstuff?

If you are a beginner struggling with barr?chords etc etc, you dont sit down and play Civil War, or something similar thats riffbased.

If you are a beginner I would suggest you to play easy chordbased songs like, I used to love her, patience, sweet child o mine, knocking on heavens door etc etc in order to train fingermovement during chordprogressions.

Than you start playing stuff like smells like teen spirit in order to learn the art of quintchords.

+ its Em, G, A, C, D, G during the "where do we go " part.

But you knew how to play other chords before learning to play an Fm etc etc.

What I meant was that this thread had gotten braggieful.

Braggieful! I'll give you braggieful!!!! Good thing I've been playing the piano since 8 and dabbled in the violin as well!!  ::) Just letting people know that barrechords can be done in that time. A lecturer at uni can teaches basic guitar for 1 semester and then in second semester uses that theory to teach barre chords. By the end of that semester they make alot of sense. Not a bad course!

By the way, an easy song for a beginner using barre chords is Saltwater by Julian Lennon.  :peace:

I was bored one day and there is this guy in Canada posting "Learn a song a day" stuff on youtube so if you search "LASAD guitar" you'll find a bunch of his lessons. Steppenwolf's born to be wild is up there. Not for absolute beginners, but when you get your slides and finger stretches down its really easy and fun.
