Album recommendations?

Please recommend essential albums that everyone should own. Masterpieces. Albums that have changed your music listening life. I will go out and buy some of these for myself, so please make sure what you recommend is really worth it. Thanks
Also, if you could include a description of the artist/album, and why you like it, I would appreciate it.

Pearl Jam "Ten" - classic 90s rock
U2 "Achtung Baby" - my favorite U2 album. The track "One" alone is worth the album's price.
Alice In Chains "Dirt" - I bet this is what many of today's bands listened to.
Sex Pistols "Never Mind The Bollocks" - how can you not own this?
There's more..... How big is your budget?

My budget for music is unlimited because music fuels me, so it's worth spending on.
I own Dirt and Ten, and both are amazing albums.
I never bought the Sex Pistols album because they were so "overhyped" in America, that I got kind of turned off to them. But, I am open to getting it if it is indeed good.

2. Van Halen- The first 6 albums, VH1, VH2, Woman and Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, 1984-The best band of the late 70s, early 80s, great stuff.
3. Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral, The Fragile.
4. Pearl Jam- Ten and Vs. Some of the best music of the 1990s.
5. STP- Core, Tiny Music, N0.4- Great band, these are their 3 best, IMHO
6. The Doors- Self-titled and LA Woman- A great band, their two masterpieces.
7. Led Zeppelin- Zoso, Physical Graffitti- Two classic albums of the 70s.
8. Metallia- Metallica
9. John Lennon- Plastic Ono Band, Imagine, Mind Games, Walls and Bridges, Double Fantasy, Milk and Honey. As good as the Beatles, IMHO.

Thanks for the time and effort you put into your replies. But, can you try and convince me to buy a particular album?
When you guys mention a few albums by one artist, I get a little turned off because it is too much for me to handle. How do I pick?

if u love mellow great uplifting love type songs By The way is one of the greatest cds in that genre
u cannot go wrong with this cd, however if u are a hardcore metal head or something u probably wont like it, but if u have a wide variety of range in your musical listening give this cd a couple listens, it will blow u away
it stayed in my car cd player for 6 consecutive months and i played it over and over
it has 16 songs which is a high volume to digest at one time
u may like 5 the first listen, after the second listen u may dig 8 or 9 and so on
it took me a few months to love all the songs
whats great about this cd is the hooks, melodies, and the music, also the great lyrics
the songs are so melodical, just when u think the chorus is ending the actual chorus hits u and takes it even higher than the first one which u think to yourself "theres no way"
stand out tracks on by the way are all of em but here are just a handful of very notables
Univerally speaking
Dosed
dont forget me
zephyr song
Cant stop
Midnight
cabron
Tear
Warm tape
Venice Queen
in myopinion the title track which was the hit on the radio is probably in the bottom 3 on this album

Oasis's what's the story morning glory is the best album to have in any collection. it has many different sounding songs on there. theres the soft songs like wonderwall, cast no shadow. then there are the heavy songs like morning glory. and the mid tempo songs like champain supernova. it is also a lyrical genius album. and that album really sum's up the year 96 for me and many people worldwide. it is truly one of those albums you can listen to from start to finish many many times!

Stabbing Westward - Darkest Days
its industrial rock/ electro rock or whatever ( labeling bands sucks!)
it got me turned on to bands that got some industrial sounds in 'em... these guys are great! the vocalist screams hes ass off sometimes! awesome! eventhough their guitars could have been more outstanding i dont care, cuz it all just rocks!
oh, and Megadeth made me listen to more heavy shit... but that was only the Duke Nukem Theme.... best tv game song fucking ever!
also, check out Backyard Babies - Making Enemys Is Good or Stockholm Syndrome. nothing too special about those, but it fucking rocks! old time rock n roll with a new spark!

I defenitely recomend you Innuendo if you are in the mood for melancoly, good songs: innuendo, I'm going slightly mad, delilah, these are the days of our lives, show must go on, headlong, bijou. In that order I listen the album, even though sometimes I hear headlong and don't try so hard.
It's must.
If you want rock! Seven son of a seven son from Iron maiden is the best!! you just have to trust me on that no words can describe it.

Pearl Jam -
Vs.
Ten
is an undeniable classic, but this tops it. It has a more raw sound than
Ten
, but most importantly, the songs are incredible. "Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town" is a touching, beautiful song. "Dissident"s huge open-highway riffs, the smokey, candle-lit atmosphere of "Indifference", the tense, charging rhythm of "Rearview Mirror," the twisting heaviness of "Leash" - it all adds up to a classic. The music is really good and Veddars vocals are powerful. Everybody should have this.
The Smiths -
The Queen Is Dead
From the stunning title track introduction to the haunting "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," this album is great. The Smiths best songs might be found elsewhere, but this is their best album front to back. Johnny Marrs guitars are beautifully textured and Morrisseys vocals are cryptic and entertaining.
The Smashing Pumpkins -
Siamese Dream
Another album thats beautifully textured. The production is great and it just sounds good, but Corgans songwriting is remarkable as well. "Cherub Rock" is an awesome opener and the band does a nice job of alternating between soft, ethereal pieces to hard, rushing ones throughout the album. Enough with the mini-reviews...
Green Day -
Dookie
Nirvana -
Nevermind

Just some thoughts on some of the picks...
Quote from: Izzy on December 14, 2003, 05:35:34 PM
Smashing Pumpkins - Melancoly and the infinite sadness
Overall, a very good album, but theres a lot of average songs in-between classics like "Tonight, Tonight" and 'Thirty-Three".
Siamese Dream
is a true classic.
Quote
Marilyn Manson - Mechanical animals
No way. Theres hardly one classic song on here (you could argue for "Dope Show" and "Come White"). Theres some good tracks like "Rock Is Dead" and "Great Big White World" but most it is pretty damn bland. Toward the end of the CD theres two or three faceless, fast-paced "electronica" tracks in a row that really showcase the album weakness. You could certainly argue that
Antichrist Superstar
is a classic (and I think it is for a lot of reasons, but mainly because the musics very good), but
Mechanical Animals
is an impossible sell.
Quote
Evanesance - Fallen
You probably know my feelings on this one.
Quote
Slash's Snakepit - Ain't life grand
Nope...
But is those are your favorites, thats cool...
Quote
then there are the heavy songs like morning glory
That song is
Great album

Ok, I'm going to throw in a few I haven't seen so far:
AC/DC - Back In Black
Someone would mention Evanesance, but no one has mentioned AC fuckin DC?? I'd be shocked if you didn't already own it, but if you don't, GET IT!
Soundgarden - Superunknown
If you are into the whole grunge thing, this is a great CD to buy (along with others already mentioned: Nevermind, Ten, etc.). You can probably judge whether you like Cornell's voice or not by listening to Audioslave, if he gets a thumbs up, this CD won't let you down.
Radiohead - The Bends
Radiohead before the weirdness. If you aren't a fan of the new Radiohead, this is the flipside. Most people would say OK Computer is there best, but this has way better songs (High and Dry, Just, Street Spirit). Great the whole way through.
Stone Temple Pilots - Purple
I saw someone list off their top 3 (out of 5!) favourite STP albums below and this wasn't one of them. Are you shitting me? Better and more varied than Core, but it still packs a punch. The songwriting is outstanding... I can listen to this CD thousands of times.
I agree about What's The Story (Morning Glory)... It seems like everyone already owns this album anyways.
And if you want to mix it up abit:
Daft Punk - Homework
Worth it for "Around The World"... the rest is just as good, if that's your thing.
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
Life ain't nothin' but bitches and money, and they'll tell you all about it.
Top Gun Soundtrack
Come on, everyone likes Danger Zone.
Bob Marley - Legend
It's Bob, everyone should own it. Everyone who doesn't like Bob Marley should be sent to Australia.

My favorite album of all time may be John Lennon's debut "Plastic Ono Band." It's a real raw, honest, bare, rock-n-roll album. It may not be a punk or metal album, but it is one of the most intense CDs that I have ever heard.
For Van Halen, I'd go with the self-titled debut.
For Pearl Jam, although I love Vs., I'd start with Ten.
For Stone Temple Pilots, I'd start with Core.
Nirvana, start with Nevermind.
NIN- Pretty Hate Machine.
The Beatles- Sgt. Peppers Lonley Hearts Club Band.
And let us not forget:
Bob Dylan- Highway 61 Revisted.
Izzy Stradlin- Ride On

Purple is a very good album and has tons of good singles. However, overall, think that Core, No.4, and Tiny Music are better, more solid albums. The last STP album, SLDD is also a great album.

Misfits - Walk Amoung Us
SOIA - Blood, Sweat and No Tears
Cathedral - Caravan Betond Redemption (every metal fan should own this)
Electric Frankenstein - How I Rose From The Dead (live album from the worlds best ever live band)
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists
Green Day - Kerplunk!
Stampin' Ground - An Expression Of Repressed Violence
Zeke - Dirty Sanchez (fast as fuck punk rock n' roll)
Dog Toffee - Sacred Heart (the not so much punk album, from the Manchester punk n' roll band)
Motorhead - 1916
That's a list of the best known bands I listen to, couldn't be arsed naming all classic albums, I'd be here to dawn.
