So what is the story between the Libs and Babyshambles? Pete used to be the singer of the Libs but got kicked out quit? and now Babyshambles is his new band? Have the Libs replaced him yet, new dude better/worse? Also, any GnR type animosity between Pete and the Libs now? Grin

History of The Libertines is quite messy..

I?m not sure how many times Carl kicked Pete out of the band and took him back, because of the drug use, difficult behavior and as he was so unreliable. One of the best love/hate rock and roll relationships to come along in a while, as said.
I remember to read somewhere he started a rehab altogether six times while he were in The Libertines..

Here?s a short history of The Libs from MySpace:

"The Libertines joined the pop fray of 2002, competing with the likes of the Strokes, Hives, Vines, and Doves with their debut single, "What a Waster." The Bernard Butler-produced track entered the U.K.'s Top 40 in June, leaving NME to crown the Libertines as the best new band in Britain. The double-A-side song "I Get Along" earned Single of the Week on BBC Radio 1. The London-based band, who inked a deal with Rough Trade in December 2001, features Carl Barat (guitar/vocals), Pete Doherty (guitar/vocals), John Hassall (bass), and Gary Powell (drums). Up the Bracket was released stateside in March 2003 while the single Time for Heroes gained momentum on the U.K. charts.

The group's Coachella Festival appearance later that spring, meanwhile, introduced their kinetic live act to the States. In June 2003, the band's playfully volatile chemistry began to go awry when Doherty didn't show up for a tour of Europe. The rest of the Libertines went ahead with the dates while Doherty formed another group that he initially also called the Libertines before changing the name to Babyshambles.

The following month, while the remaining Libertines were on tour in Japan, Doherty was arrested for breaking into Barat's apartment and stealing items including a harmonica, laptop computer, and antique guitar. In August -- around the same time that the band's single Don't Look Back Into the Sun became one of their biggest hits -- Doherty pled guilty, and also confessed to addictions to heroin and crack cocaine; in September he was sentenced to six months in jail. However, his sentence was reduced to two months on appeal, and with time off for good behavior, he was released from jail in early October and the complete Libertines lineup performed at the Rough Trade 25th anniversary show later that month. In November, Doherty played two shows in his own apartment that featured a mix of Libertines and Babyshambles songs. The band closed out 2004 with a string of local dates, and began 2004 by writing and recording new songs in France.

Their first U.K. dates of that year, a three-night residency at London's Brixton Academy, unfolded in a typically chaotic fashion when Doherty smashed his guitar and left the stage in the middle of the band's final performance. As the band continued to record, Doherty and Barat also appeared on "For Lovers," a single by their friend Wolfman; it became a surprise hit and the biggest Libertines-related release yet. Meanwhile, in April 2004, Babyshambles released their self-titled, limited-edition debut single. Later that month, the band were joined on-stage by Peter Perrett of the legendary new wave band the Only Ones, and performed "Don't Look Back Into the Sun" and the Only Ones' classic "Another Girl, Another Planet" with them.

But by May the Libertines' future looked grim again: Doherty was in and out of rehab clinics, such as London's Priory, in rapid succession. His ongoing troubles led the Libertines to cancel their performance at the Love Music Hate Racism concert that June; the event was subsequently canceled altogether. The band's appearances that month at Glastonbury, the Isle of Wight, and Morrissey's Meltdown festivals were also canceled and Doherty went to the rehab program at the Thamkrabok Monastery in Thailand; after a few days there, he left for Bangkok. Just after returning to London in mid-June, Doherty was arrested by London police, who detained him for a traffic offense and found a switchblade in his possession. The rest of the band carried on with their obligations for July and onward, saying that Doherty was welcome to rejoin the band once he had his addictions under control.

The Libertines recruited guitarist/vocalist Anthony Rossomando for their upcoming gigs, which included a performance at the T in the Park Festival. Doherty, meanwhile, set up a string of solo shows and dates with Wolfman, but failed to appear at several of the performances in early August. "Can't Stand Me Now," the debut single from the Libertines' self-titled second album, entered the U.K. charts at number two; in mid-August, Doherty appeared in court and pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of an offensive weapon. The Libertines arrived late that month, and the band -- minus Doherty -- toured the U.K. and the U.S. that fall in support of it. Doherty, meanwhile, put his efforts into Babyshambles, touring the U.K. with the band throughout September and October."

Oh, and Carl has his own band Dirty Pretty Things with Gary Powell (ex-libertine drummer), Anthony Rossomando (replaced Pete on libs) and Didz Hammond. John Hassall (played bass in libs) has also a new band called Yeti.

Thanks alot for posting that. Certainly seems the shit that goes on behind the curtain as far as that band goes is pretty fucked up, and Pete seems like a very volatile and unpredictable singer to have in a band.

Interesting read none the less, and Im sure being a follower can be even more aggravating than GnR. Tongue

Peter is in court today, charged with possesion of crack cocaine and heroin (this is his first drug related charge, i think..). And here?s some more Babyshambles news.

"Babyshambles kick off UK tour without guitarist

Patrick Walden walks out of the band

Babyshambles kicked off their UK tour last night at London's Koko without guitarist Patrick Walden (January 9).

The band have been playing as a three-piece since their Christmas show at the capital's Rhythm Factory (December 22), and following two low key intimate performances over the weekend at Soho's Jazz After Dark (January 6-7), they are heading out on the road without him following.

With Pete Doherty taking over on guitar duties, Babyshambles treated fans to a set of live favourites including 'Fuck Forever', 'Killamangiro', 'Sticks And Stones', 'A'rebours', 'In Love With A Feeling', 'Back From The Dead' and 'Albion'.

The group also tore through a handful of Libertines classics including 'What A Waster', 'Time For Heroes' and 'Don't Be Shy'.

At one point during the set, Doherty unfolded a charge sheet and read out that he will be appearing in court tomorrow (January 11).

He also quipped that if the band's tour gets cancelled, it may be due to his court appearance not going to way he would like it to.

As previously reported on NME.COM, Doherty was arrested last year after "driving erratically". Police allegedly recovered Class A substances from the vehicle.

Later, referring to their departed guitarist, Doherty pretended to read again from the charge sheet, saying: "Patrick Walden - misuse of the guitar act. I'm paying my penance for it now."

Babyshambles ran through some rare songs such as 'Palace Of Bone' and 'Upon The Numbers' on which collaborator, and Doherty's former cellmate, The General guested. He also joined the group for an extended version of the 'Down In Albion' track 'Pentonville Rough'.

Earlier in the gig, Doherty joked with the crowd: "It's my New Year's Resolution not to throw my clothes into the crowd," before adding, "Oh, I've already lost a coat."

Babyshambles continue their tour tonight at Sheffield's Plug (January 10) and are scheduled to appear at Stoke's The Underground on Wednesday (11)."

Petes hearing is tomorrow!

He?s been jailed since 27th of january, after getting caught of possessing drugs for the second time in a week. I?m sure he?ll continue with a propper sentence.

Peter was at same court few weeks ago and admitted possessing heroin, crack cocaine, morphine and marijuana. He get free on bail. He?s also on bail after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine and heroin of 30th of november arrest.

The maximum sentence for possession of "Class A" drugs such as heroin and cocaine is seven years in prison..

BBc News,

"Community order for Pete Doherty

Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty has been given a 12-month community order after admitting possession of drugs.

The 26-year-old was sentenced at Ealing Magistrates Court. The singer was also ordered to take part in a drug rehabilitation programme and warned he could face jail if he breached the order. Doherty had been held in custody since being arrested by plain clothes police officers in Whitechapel, east London, on 26 January.

Treatment

He pleaded guilty to a total of seven charges of possessing illegal substances at three separate court appearances last month. The year-long drug rehabilitation programme will require Doherty to attend a drug centre and undergo monthly check-ups. Magistrate Ann McLaughlin told Doherty: "You must submit to treatment with a view to ending your dependency on drugs."

More than 40 journalists and about 30 fans crammed into the court for the sentencing.

Speaking after the hearing, fellow Babyshambles member Adam Ficek said: "We are thrilled for [Pete] and for the band and we can go forward now.

Talent

The band's bassist Drew McConnell added: "We did not speculate [on the sentence]. We were very nervous about what the sentence would be but it's a result. "We can't wait to see Pete and make plans for the rest of the year." Both men said they would support Doherty in his battle against drug addiction. "I think some people just have a natural knack for summing up how a whole generation feels with a few words and a few notes," added Mr McConnell. "[Pete] still finds it hard to believe that he has that talent sometimes." Mr Ficek added: "He is very talented in a musical sense and with the written word. The general public have yet to recognise that."

Doherty shot to fame as lead singer of the Libertines and became a tabloid regular during his relationship with model Kate Moss. "

This is his chance. Yet he?s spent few week?s in rehab wing at Pentonville. His rehab continues and he has to take a drug test every month, if it?s positive he goes back to prison..
