« on: March 20, 2007, 12:03:22 PM »

Well since hes out on his own again I thought I'd get a thread going for him...Feel free to talk about all his projects here

Chris Cornell previews solo album during spring tour

Singer Chris Cornell, who recently cut ties with Audioslave, will give fans a taste of his forthcoming sophomore solo album during a brief outing that launches early next month.

Cornell has lined up stops in 11 major cities, beginning April 6 in Las Vegas, and wrapping up May 2 in Los Angeles. Details are included below.

In addition to featuring cuts from his upcoming release "Carry On," Cornell's setlist during the tour will include material culled from his days with Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave.

Last month, Cornell announced that he had split with Audioslave due to "irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences," and simultaneously announced a May 1 release date for "Carry On"; the set has since been pushed back to June 5.

"Carry On," Cornell's first solo collection since 1999's "Euphoria Morning," was produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones). Among the album's 14 tracks is the cut "You Know My Name," a song that first turned up in last year's James Bond flick, "Casino Royale," and the lead-off single "No Such Thing," which is due to hit radio stations March 26.

Alongside the set's 13 original tracks will be Cornell's "slow-grind cover of Michael Jackson 'Billie Jean' that gives the familiar song a completely new feeling," according to a press release.

Looking forward to his new album. I really liked the Bond theme he did, and loved his work with Soundgarden as well as his song "Seasons" from the Singles soundtrack. His debut was also pretty good. Too bad Audioslave was such a letdown...

Launch Radio Networks reports: Singer Chris Cornell recently told MTV.com that his days of being in a band were over and he was prepared to spend the rest of his career as a solo artist following his departure from Audioslave earlier this spring. Although AUDIOSLAVE guitarist Tom Morello recently said that he never officially heard from Cornell that he was leaving the group, the singer told Launch that he did make his intentions clear. "Tom and I did have communications about the fact that I was gonna go make a record, and that I was tired of what ended up seeming like political negotiations toward how we were gonna do AUDIOSLAVE business and getting nowhere with it," he said. "We had back and forths about that, and we also as a band sat in a room with other people trying to work this out on numerous occasions, and it wasn't really happening."

Cornell added that the process of "doing AUDIOSLAVE business" led him to go solo. "I still will always say that everybody did their best, I think, to try to come to some sort of an agreement, but it literally did sort of turn into these, like, negotiations, you know, almost like you're negotiating a contract with a record company, something like that," he said. "I can make my own records and I don't have to do that with myself."

Euphoria Morning is probably my favorite non-GNR CD. The first time I listened to it I didn't even like it that much (if at all), but I figured "Hey I bought it, might as well listen" and over a few days it just kept rising through my favorites list. I'm not loving the new single, it's okay but not great, but I can't wait for the new CD.

And although that is a great setlist, I, the small minority, would be very disappointed by the lack of Euphoria Morning songs.... though hearing Seasons and the Temple of the Dog stuff would be awesome (as well as the new stuff, Soundgarden, AND Audioslave).

It's decent. Nowhere near as strong as Euphoria Morning IMO, but then again I've had a lot of time to get used to it. It's got some strong songs off it, and a lot more that I think are the kind that grow on you.

Here's how I'd rank his work, everything"

1. Soundgarden- Superunknown
2. Soundgarden- BadmotorFinger
3. Soundgarden- Down on the Upside
4. Soundgarden- Screaming Life/Fopp
5. Soundgarden- Louder than Love
6. Audioslave- Out of Exile
7. Soundgarden- Ultramega OK
8. Temple of the Dog
9. Audioslave- s/t
10. Solo- EM
11. Audioslave- Rev.

And I'm not ranking the new CD as I haven't heard it.

You haven't included Temple Of The Dog... which is amazing. Also, you have overlooked SG's Ultramega OK.  And it's Louder than Love.

And I disagree with rating early Soundgarden so highly. My list would have Superunknown as #1, otherwise completely different than yours  Wink

Without a doubt my favorite singer ever not named Axl. And it's still pretty close. Obviously he's lost a TON of range in his voice but in his prime I'm not quite sure anyone on the planet could do the things he could with his voice. I was a huge soundgarden fan as a kid, always liked Louder than Love but thought they really became amazing with Badmotorfinger. They have so many non-singles songs that when friends of mine hear them in my car they shit because the stuff is so good. "Slaves and Bulldozers" "Let Me Drown" "Limo Wreck" "Somewhere" "Tighter and Tighter" "Drawing Flies" "Rhinosaur". I got euphoria morning when it came out and I was about 14-15 so it took me a while to get into it but now I love it. I remember when Audioslave first came out I was disappointed because his voice sounded so noticably different. He still sounded great but just couldn't reach back like he used to. Lot of songs I liked by them, but they never came close to touching Soundgarden. I actually thought that the last album was their best effort tho.
And I agree with RichardNixon TOTD was OK, but not as great as some seem to think. Some cool shit like "Say Hello 2 Heaven" "All Night Thing" and "Call Me A Dog" but overall doesn't do anything for me.

Is anyone else addicted to this album like I am? It's a departure for fans of Cornell's more straight ahead rock songs but it's still got that sound that makes Cornell amazing. It came out June 6th so I suggest everyone pick it up, fantastic album!

He released Carry On last year if that's what you're talking about. Probably the worst album he's ever made in my opinion, and I'm a fan of all his previous work. I also just read that Timberland is producing another album he is currently recording. He being Timberland of Justin Timberlake fame. What the fuck happened to The Chris Cornell of 20 years ago? That scream that could peel paint off walls and who actually gave a shit about making good music.

I'm listening to the new LP right now and yes that's surprising, but I enjoy it for the moment.
the last LP was so boooring and disapointing, this new album is like fresh air.

I've read here and there some bad reviews because it's different, less rock n'roll, more r'n'b, etc...
the fact is it's much better than his last solo record and a smart move.

Now, why couldn't he have written an entire album like that in 2009?

But that's not Cornell solo, it's Temple Of The Dog. Wink

Clarify

when I say I am not a fan, that doesnt mean I don't like some of his work. I don't follow his career though or buy his albums. I have heard a few songs of his I like though.

I guess with "Scream" after hearing so much negativity etc, I was expecting something just horrendous. what I heard wasn't bad at all.

There are actually quite a few good songs on the new record. You just have to understand and accept what sound he was going for.  Cornell's vocals are always awesome.

It is like with anything else. People want to make you one thing and put you into a box.

The sad part is, if Cornell did nothing but alt rock, he'd be criticized for being safe.

Guy does this and he is tore to shreds cause its a little different.

maybe we like this because we don't have much of an opinion on his previous works.

Or maybe I tend to find band/collaborated efforts more interesting than solos.

I don't like the Timbaland sound.

I don't like Timbaland artists.

Why would I like this album where a grunge legend has stooped so low as to work with a guy who samples beats for flavor of the week artists?

Timbaland actually comes up with most orginal beats etc.

I guess its like Metallica. Where I am not a huge fan, I can pick up Death Magentic and think it is the greatest album ever because I have no attachements to other albums.

Now I have went back and picked up other albums, I still like DM better than the Black Album.

With Cornell, where I am not a fan, I can listen to this and not get outraged at the difference.

"Seasons" is amazing. Also love the acoustic version of just Chris doing "like suicide".

Indeed it has. I just saw him this past monday with Soundgarden and I was blown away by his voice. He nails those high notes perfectly.
I really hope he'll return and do an accoustic show here again some day as I missed the one he did last year.

Really digging Higher Truth.
Was very much looking forward to it, but was initially disappointed.
Took a few spins to get into it, but it eventually sunk in, and I?d say it?s his most solid release since Euphoria Mourning.

The bonus track, Bend in the Road is my personal favorite.
Dead Wishes and Circling are other standouts.

Lyrically it?s stronger and more consistent than King Animal.

The new songs fit nicely with his back catalogue when I caught him at the Shubert Boston.
Amazing show, primarily him on acoustic, but also another talented musician who?s name escapes me on mandolin, and cello.

Standouts for me were River of Deceit, Seasons, Sunshower and When I?m Down.

Setlist:

Misery Chain
Before We Disappear
Can't Change Me
The Times They Are A-Changin?(w/new lyrics)
Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart
Fell on Black Days
Thank You
River of Deceit
Call Me a Dog
Doesn't Remind Me
Blow Up the Outside World
Let Your Eyes Wander
Billie Jean
Seasons
When I'm Down
Rusty Cage
Sunshower
Worried Moon
Black Hole Sun
I Am the Highway
Hunger Strike
Wooden Jesus

Encore:
Josephine
