Bret Michaels -- From Deathbed to 'Idol' Judge?

May 29th 2010 10:15 AM PDT by TMZ Staff

Bret Michaels returned to the stage last night in Biloxi, MS where Bret dropped a huge piece of info on the crowd -- he might be taking Simon Cowell's seat on "American Idol."

Right before Bret played the classic "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," he told the crowd, "I can't say this is true yet, cause I don't know. Next year they asked me to possibly be the judge on 'American Idol.'" Very vague, but still ...

As for the rest of the show, one audience member told us, "I figured he'd be wobbly and sitting on a stool. But he was energetic, running around the stage with his guitar. It was like when I saw Poison years ago. It was a awesome show."

UPDATE: A source close to Bret tells TMZ Bret is "in the running to replace Simon" but that nothing is close to being done yet. A rep for FOX says they are not commenting on any speculation regarding Simon's replacement. Stay tuned ...

I hope that show fails miserably whoever takes over for Simon.  Bret did do a good job making over and marketing that country artist on The Apprentice this year though, so maybe he would make some sense as a replacement.

Bret has a new show on VH1 that just aired this week.  They had a disclaimer at the beginning that they were shooting up until his health problems and hope to reconvene when he is well again, which by the looks of things was the day he got out of the hospital.

From an interview with Bret Michaels with Billboard:

June 04, 2010

"I think this is good for my soul," Michaels said in a phone interview Thursday from his latest concert stop in Minneapolis. "Honestly, I'm taking every precaution. I'm not doing anything stupid. I'm going on stage and telling the fans that I'm going to give 100 percent of everything I've got, but if it's only 75 or 80 percent, I think they will understand."

"I don't want my legacy to be that I had a brain hemorrhage," said Michaels. "I want it to be that I rocked, I treated people with respect and I made a lot of good friends along the way. I think that came back to me when I got sick. I truly believe if you're a good person, and you spread love, then that love will come back to you."

From a recent interview with Bret Michaels:

There's lots of buzz saying you may replace Simon Cowell on 'Idol,' and our readers overwhelmingly voted for you to be the next judge. Is that a responsibility you'd want?

This is a good question, and here's why -- I'd be honored to do it. I feel there's one area I shine in, it's giving musicians unbelievable advice. When you talk about being a judge, Simon did an amazing job. He cut to the chase with his brutal honesty. Mine would be less brutal and with more advice along with the judging. I'll say that wasn't the right song, do you have what it takes? My life is all-encompassing ... it's being a performer, as well as a singer-songwriter and a producer. I can cover every aspect of the business for them. I'd be honored to do it and fans would be blown away by the advice. Everyone thinks when you get a record deal, you've made it. I say the exact opposite. You have a foot in the door, now how do you last 20 years. What's going to make fans watch 'Idol' and see a kid write a great song, and 20 years from now they still want to see you playing music. I would love to do it and I could give killer advice.

BRET MICHAELS 'Would Be Honored' To Replace SIMON COWELL On 'American Idol' - June 8, 2010

Mike Hess of PopEater.com recently conducted an interview with POISON singer Bret Michaels. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

PopEater.com: Firstly and most importantly, how are you feeling?

Bret: Honestly, all things considered with what I've been through, I'm feeling pretty good. I know my body pretty well. I'm running [at] about 75 percent where I'd like to be. I'm striving to get back to 100. I went out this last Memorial Day weekend and did shows, and I walked out on stage ... most fans, we're like family now. On stage, normally, I go completely insane and kick-ass. This time, I gave 100 percent of my 75 percent. My one leg is still jacked up on my left side ... The injections I'm taking in my leg, they're pretty painful. My legs are black and blue from the thigh to the knee on both sides now. That, plus the blood thinner I need with that ridiculous PFO hole in my heart ... I'm like, "Man, I guess the brain hemorrhage and appendix removal wasn't enough." But in spirit, I'm excited. It's good for my soul to be out making music again.

PopEater.com: There's lots of buzz saying you may replace Simon Cowell on "American Idol", and our readers overwhelmingly voted for you to be the next judge. Is that a responsibility you'd want?

Bret: This is a good question, and here's why ? I'd be honored to do it. What's going to make fans watch "Idol" and see a kid write a great song, and 20 years from now they still want to see you playing music. I would love to do it and I could give killer advice.

PopEater.com: And you're also considering doing a new version of "Rock Star"?

Bret: That offer has already been made, and we're just trying to consider putting everything in. I've got a VH1 show I'm shooting called "Life As I Know It", which will air in the fall. Then it would either be "Rock Star" at the beginning of the year, or I'd start "Idol" [and] then we'll start shooting when they start their season again. I'm really excited about it, but "Rock Star" is another place where I'd take on the job of hosting, and what I want to do is, every week, bring in three important people from the music industry. Maybe like a producer, an agent and a celebrity come in. Then you bring in someone from AOL, someone from here, from there. You say, "Why would I want to do an interview with you?" I'd want to round it out more to show the new young musicians there's a lot more to the music industry than playing music. When I first started playing music, I thought all you did was play your guitar and everything falls into place. There's a lot more to it.

PopEater.com: Your new album, "Custom Built", comes out July 6. What are you most excited for the public to hear?

Bret: For me, there's so many different songs I want people to hear ... I'm excited about the rootsy version of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn", the new stuff. The theme song to my show is called "Riding Against the Wind" ... and a cover of SUBLIME's "What I Got". That's one of my favorite songs; it just puts me in a great mood. I love hearing that song, so I busted it out live, and I thought I did a really respectful version of it. I wanted to keep some of what the song is, but I added some of my own lyrics and a cool breakdown to it. We played it live and it went over insane. It's been one of my favorite songs since the early '90s.

Bret looks great, but Miley cannot sing. Why did he let her ruin one of his best songs.  Huh I don't think she has staying power. she will be the next Lindsey Lohan.

All that "on his death bed" drama distracted me but now I remember why I hate Bret Michaels.

I certainly don't wish him ill but I find it amazing how quickly he went from that back to this shit.

BRET MICHAELS DOCTORS PUT TO REST MEDICAL CONDITION SPECULATION

BRET MICHAELS DOCTORS PUT TO REST ANY SPECULATION THAT HIS RECENT BRAIN HEMORRHAGE AND APPENDECTOMY WEREN?T SERIOUS, REAL OR LIFE THREATENING

Recently there have been a few erroneous, false and irresponsible statements spread on the internet and one news station that Bret Michaels medical condition wasn?t serious, real or life threatening. Dr. Joseph Zabramski, MD, Bret?s neurosurgeon at Barrow Neurological Institute states, ?The fact is, the subarachnoid hemorrhage that Mr. Michaels suffered was very real, and very serious as was the T.I.A (warning stroke) and P.F.O., which will be operated on later this year. A subarachnoid hemorrhage is a life-threatening, neurosurgical emergency that requires an extensive work up and management in the ICU to prevent re-bleeding and manage the complications associated with the initial hemorrhage. For anyone to speculate that this was not a life threatening medical emergency is absolutely incorrect. Between 15 and 20 percent of patients die as a result of the initial hemorrhage, and only approximately 50 percent of those that survive have a good outcome. Recovery from subarachnoid hemorrhage is determined primarily by the size of the initial bleeding episode. Mr. Michaels quick reaction to the hemorrhage and immediate medical attention that followed aided in his ability to make a strong recovery and stop the brain hemorrhage before it caused severe and permanent brain damage. Mr. Michaels is fortunate to be alive after all that he has been through. Bret is truly one of the most determined individuals I have ever met when it comes to an attempt at making a full recovery.

Dr. Greg Gonzaba, whose team treated Michaels for the appendicitis in San Antonio. states ?When I arrived I found Mr. Michaels to be acutely distressed, upon my examination I concluded he was suffering from an ?acute abdomen?, a medical diagnosis suspicious for a serious, potentially fatal abdominal problem, such as appendicitis, cholecystitis or possible diverticulitis. These conditions, if left untreated could escalate to a potentially fatal problem such as organ rupture, sepsis/toxicity and eventually death by overwhelming infection not to mention Mr. Michaels is a diabetic which could complicate the condition. For a news source to assume and state his condition was not serious is completely false and irresponsible.?

In recent months Bret Michaels? health issues and determination to recover and continue touring have been viewed as both inspirational by some and as potentially jeopardizing to his health by others. Michaels, a lifelong type 1 diabetic, had an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage, a T.I.A (warning stroke) and was diagnosed with a P.F.O (hole in his heart). This domino effect happened over the course of a month and a half. Although Michaels is not 100% yet his fight to recover both physically and mentally combined with continued lab work including blood tests MRI?s and physical?s, 4 daily insulin injections along with 2 daily Lovenox injections to thin the blood will be continued until he is able to have the operation on his heart in the fall ?

Janna Elias V.P. of Michaels Entertainment states ?All people heal differently and while Bret may be out on the road and performing he is still not 100%. He still has pain from the chemical meningitis, short term memory loss and gets fatigued quicker than normal. Bret isn?t by any means trying to put his health in jeopardy by being on the road. He simply feels that music is a powerful healer. For Bret to sit around and not live his life to the fullest would likely be more detrimental to his recovery then playing music, it is the same mind set as the lyrics to Tim McGraw?s song ?Live like you were Dying.??

Bret Michaels: I would love to do 'idol'

July 12, 2010

Here's a sneak peek at Tuesday's interview with Bret Michaels. Rumors abound that Bret will become the next judge on "American Idol." Here's what Michaels had to say. What do you think? Who should replace the irreplaceable Simon Cowell?

Bret Michaels is acting like a moron if I was in his place I would listen to my doctor and get some rest at either the hospital(if it was that bad) or at my house I wouldn't travel or anything unless in was a fact that I was going to die soon from it.

This makes it hard for me to be conciderant when he has a fucking hole in his heart or brain and he is just running around just to make some fucking money!!!
