Title: Who would you like to see as the Opening Act on the next tour?
Post by: Classic Case on March 02, 2009, 06:29:49 PM
WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE  THE OPENING ACT IN THE NEXT GNR TOUR?

I saw Papa Roach and Sebastian Bach opening on the last tour, and they were great!...was a great start and the people was happy with them.

There is a Norwegian band called Audrey Horne, that i think would fith very very well opening for Guns N Roses. They toured Europe with Enslaved last year. Hmm.. and maybe Mastodon. Hmmm Isis.. the problem is that im not sure if the majority of gnr fans are Isis fans.. lol

I think Australia and NZ got the best line up of the entire tour with Rose Tattoo and Bach. But I would also love to see Airbourne or The Angels open for Guns.

Faith no More is reuniting...they would be an awesome opener.

Priestess would be a cool one, too.  Maybe Justin Hawkins new band.

I saw BFMV, Papa Roach, and Baz during 2006 with GNR. I would like to see Airborne also, and Weezer

Saw GnR/Metallica on tour together in the 90's.  Faith no More opened.  It was horrible.  (Not Metallica/Gnr) Probably just the reaction here, but everyone just wanted to get on to Metallica and Guns.  I actually felt kinda sorry for them.   Everyone was just yelling for them to get off the stage!

and now that GNRs manager said they will tour this summer and they will do stadiums I think the will need a good Opening band who can bring fans and sell tickets, so I think maybe Stone Temple Pilots (maybe Scott and Axl can work out theyr diferences), or maybe Linkin Park.

Avenged Sevenfold, Kings of Leon, or Shiny Toy Guns.  Or they could just open for Metallica.

No offense to you, but I hate how people keep saying they should open for Metallica. GNR's catalogue is as good (and Better) than it was when Metallica opened for them. A band that has the hits GNR has should not open. Nevermind that I think they put on a show that's tough to beat. I get why people say that about Metallica, looking at the success of Death Magnetic, but to me then it just shouldn't happen. There are a handful of bands so big that it would be weird for them to open for GNR, so just scratch those.
Cause I wouldn't want to see GNR open for anyone but the Beatles.

Post by: crow316 on March 05, 2009, 04:09:46 AM
I was joking about Metallica because of all the discussion over the last month. My other suggestions were serious though.  I would just like to see them have a newer, yet somewhat established act who is on the rise with a few hits also.  Not a holdover from the days when GNR were more successful.   However, Metallica never opened for GnR. They co-headlined.  And GnR would be extremely lucky to co-headline with Metallica again. But it wont happen.

Not sure who I would pick. GNR fans are always the hardest on opening acts. I really like Baz. Sevenfold would be cool.

Just bring back Baz and Rose Tattoo,
Angry Anderson just keeps getting better and better with age
(like Baz and Axl) ,  keep it the same, they were great opening acts.

With the "stadium tour" on the horizon, I'd really like to see a "festival" of sorts. If I got my wish I'd want any or all of these bands on the billl:

Theory Of A Deadman
Buckcherry
Papa Roach
Saving Abel
Shinedown
3 Doors Down

any or all of those bands in any order followed by

GUNS
N'
ROSES

I love MUSE but they still are no where near the GNR atmosphere. MUSE is one of my fav bands... but they're not co-healining equals.

I hated Papa Roach... lame songs and grew tired of all those damn power chords. Hope to gawd they are no where near the next batch of shows...

I'd love to see Alter Bridge. They have a great singer in Myles, and have pretty good songs.

Sorry i missed the humor... i need to sleep more often.
And yeah Metallica and GNR co-headlined in 92, i shouldn't have said "opened." My point was just that i can't imagine Axl going on stage before someone else, and I wouldn't want to. I agree with you about your more serious suggestions, but for a stadium tour they might want someone more established.

I think he was trying to say that there's not much of a chance for that. His question was because the original thread headline said something about headliner and opening act.

ok, if that is the case though, i imagine there would be a LOT of pressure on them to perform the old catalog which is something most of the fan's of the NU band don't want.  A lot of people that go to large show's aren't always diehard fan's and just want the single's or there not happy.

Actually, i know its stupid, but when i saw GNR live in 06 in Dublin, there was small section's of the crowd chanting for Slash. (some even dressed as him).

Also, when i saw VR live in Dublin, there was a small section chanting "Guns n Roses" and were only happy when they played Its so easy and brownstone.

i know this is ridiculous and slightly off topic but it shows the mentality of some fans that go to these things.

but i agree with you man, they will do a show that fits the crowd.

Major? I don't think he wouldn't play the bigger venues like GN'R....

His latest album was streaming on his Myspace and I don't think a lot of GN'R fans would be interested in hearing him do that kind of stuff....

So if he was playing his "usual" solo stuff, he could actually work as an opening act for GN'R.

So you dont think that GnRs "core audience" is open-minded enough to embrace somebody trying something a little different, experimenting with a new type of sound?
You put down Metallica fans by calling them to close-minded to embrace new Guns N Roses, and now you are doing the same thing.

Ok, fair observation.

But, knowing how well Mix Master Mike was received in 2002, and several of those younger metal bands in 2006, I'm a bit more careful about making statements about how open minded the concert audiences are.

With that in mind, I don't know if a Timbaland produced Chris Cornell would be an optimal opening act for GN'R.

Sorry if it offends you.

The problem with picking a GnR opner, is that the GnR audience is so "genere spread" I belive a straight forward Hard Rock band, or Rock n Roll band would be a safe guess..

My biggest wish would be something like Tool, Isis, Mastodon. Or maybe Faith No More..

Maybe Tool is too big for a opening act, but it would sure fill the stadiums with lots of Rock/Metal fans from a allaround genere..

First act:  Buckcherry

Second act:  Weezer

Third:  Kings of Leon

Fourth act:  Kid Rock

Headliner:  Guns

Not that this would be my dream lineup from a strictly musical standpoint but it makes sense in terms of demographics

Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters

The only one of those bands who would open fir anyone would be Motorhead. The others are too big to be an opening act.
Motorhead would be a great choice though. Them with Bach and maybe anthtrax would bring a massive crowd.

NICKELBACK.

FUCKING.

SUCKS.

If any band could keep me away from a GN'R show, it would be those no-talent pieces of cat shit!!!
I might go just to boo the shit out of them.  Although I'd probably end up getting in a fight or getting kicked out so it probably wouldn't be worth it in the end.

Motorhead's a great choice.
Turbonegro?
Slayer?
Megadeth - not my cup of tea personally but might suit?
Lez Zeppelin!

How about Alice Cooper - then they could play The Garden! would love to hear them sing together live..

Let me tell you all something about Nickelback - and this is a stone cold fact....

If Roadrunner Records did not have Nickleback, the label would not be here today.  Don't try and argue it, I know this as a fact.

And being broader you need to remember this FACT....

The music industry has been killed by the internet.  If it weren't for Nickleback, U2 & Coldplay we would have no new bands coming through.  Those bands are propping up the record and publsihing companies - and all the other bands get fed from that pot of money.  You think we'd being seeing as much Slipknot promo and presence in the market if it weren't for Nickleback? Think again!

So Nickleback.......  I'm game for it.  Bring it on!

Wouldn't agree with that at all.  Although they have had to find ways to adapt.  Most musicains make the majority of their money through merchandise.  The stones once had plastic cups at a gig with pictures of the band on them,  they got a massive pay day from it!!!

You don't have to agree.  But when you say that most bands make money from merch, just think about that a bit harder.  The only bands that sell enough merch for that to be a viable argument are the ones that are already sell albums in the high thousands.

Without people buying the Coldplay, U2, Nickleback albums in their millions - the labels would not be sending bands out on tour cause they couldn't afford to.

I have met two bands this year - both of whom have previously been on the cover of Kerrang / Rocksound etc, who are now quitting the band and have full time jobs because they can't afford to be in a band.

The music industry has not yet worked out how to monetise the internet revolution outside of the already succesful bands - but they need to work it out quickly.

360 deals just about work for the labels (for big bands) but are financial suicide for smaller bands.

Sorry, I was coming across like a smart ass.  I'm no expert, but I know a bit about this subject.

Just before I go back to the topic, here is some food for thought.....

I was told last week (by someone that would know) that Slipknot has not made Corey Taylor a millionaire.  Sounds ridiculous, but it is true.

Some do.  In most cases, smaller bands will buy-on to the tours.  Backyard Babies toured the UK last year and both support bands paid to be on that tour.  Whether the band paid for it themselves (which many do) or a label / manager paid I do not know in this instance.

Obviously the exception to this is when the support band shares a label - such as the recent announcement that Black Stone Cherry will support Nickleback on the UK dates in May.  I believe they are both on RoadRunner.

Record labels pay for it... the artist must pay back. Management is who handles where and how many shows the artists do. Since the money is paid back and there is no royalty issues with tours, the artists make more money. That is how artists truly make money, by touring. The label depending on the artists may or may not pay at all. So if the artist is big enough, like Madonna, they finance it themselves, knowing full well they will not only make their money back... but make a very nice return.

Just couldn't get into him. I saw them in albany in 2002 and i left thru both cky and mmm set couldn't wait for gnr. But that's how it seems to always be when a big band comes. It's not like back in the day when you looked forward to seeing all the bands unless it's a double headlining tour.

A co-headling bill with Guns and Muse would be amazing.

You call yourself a MUSE fan but question whether they're big enough to co-headline with GNR?  Now in North America this would be a correct statement, but perhaps not so much in Europe.  Muse are HUGE!  They were the first band to sell out the new Wembley Stadium, in fact they sold it out back to back nights.  That's 136 000 people over two nights.  Granted some were drawn by the fact that Wembley Stadium was brand new, but Muse has major pull in Europe.  GNR would do well by having them play with them if they wanted to fill stadiums in Europe.

Thanks to GNR's 2006 Inland performance I became aware of Muse.

Cheers,

Andrew

I think the obvious two bands that could help pull off a stadium tour are Van Halen and/or Aerosmith.  The flip side to that equation is that I can't see either band opening for this incarnation of Guns.  If it were the original lineup, then that would be a different story.

The other names being thrown around, ie. Kid Rock, Kings of Leon, Avenged Sevenfold, etc., would work if they were committed to selling out arenas.  You have to factor in that GNR has already toured twice on the strength of their back catalogue, most are now aware that this isn't the same band that made GNR a house-hold name, and few except for the hardcore fan-base are that energized about hearing anything from Chinese Democracy.

The only way I can see it work is for a band like Aerosmith or Van Halen to act much like Metallica did in '92 and agree to play first because they have no interest in waiting around for Axl to get onstage.  If it's viewed from a logistical or practical perspective it may work.  If pride overrules, I can't see how an arraignment would be reached.

Cheers,

Andrew

First - Iron Maiden wouldn't open for Gn'R. They have their own public (very different than the one of Gn'R) n' they're headliners.

Second - Gn'R n' Maiden didn't finish the '88 tour in the best conditions, Maiden kick off Gn'R from their tour due the "erratic" behaviour

Thirst - Axl once said that he hope they (Gn'R) never became a band like Maiden. Dickinson said recently that ChD is shit.

I saw Twilight Singers perform a few years ago at the Warsaw, an old polish club in my Brooklyn neighborhood, with Mark Lanegan-- before the Gutter Twins, and at that very moment in time they were the best band in america. Same goes for The Cardinals. My girlfriend was really into them and I was skeptical, but saw them play for three and a half hours non-stop. They have the ability  to change their sound, and this show had them in a very fuzzed out 1970's fashion. They are very proficient and have that classic american roots rock n roll vibe.

I miss the era of shows when a larger band would give bands with more of a cult following a larger audience, and the talent of the musicianship made everyone play better, and yr. turned on to new sounds; for the love of music...

It's a shame that crowds at GNR shows tend to be horrible to the opening acts that are unfamiliar to them.

They are releasing a new record this month, besides as far as I know Axl Rose likes Queensryche, would be at least interesting, I love Queensryche, it's has a lot of in common with GNR, for instance epic songs, great guitar solos, beautiful ballads and a terrific frontman of course.

For a stadium tour...you're going to need some big names.  As cool as some of those smaller bands are...people will want a lot for their money.

No one has mentioned them yet...but how about Jane's Addiction?  The original line-up is back together and Dave and Axl have worked together in the past.

The Killers recently had some negative comments towards GNR.  It wasn't too bad, but they said something like they deserved to beat them in the charts because it's their time now.  In essence, it's not 1992 anymore.  At least that's what I got out of the comment.  So F'em!

I miss the era of shows when a larger band would give bands with more of a cult following a larger audience, and the talent of the musicianship made everyone play better, and yr. turned on to new sounds; for the love of music...

--mojo

It's a shame that crowds at GNR shows tend to be horrible to the opening acts that are unfamiliar to them.

                                                                            * * * *

THEORY: I wonder if GNR has considered headlining Coachella, Lollapalloza, etc. I believe that some of the crowd negativity comes from the ' I want to hear Sweet Child O' Mine' for the zillionth time set-- this and those who are obsessed with seeing Mr. Rose in person, and so anyone or anything interfering with that communion comes off as an obstruction at best.

Because Chinese Democracy has a potential wide range of appeal (as a whole I think it has more than little commonalities with Radiohead and others, as a concept album) why not have a set directed at these crowds?

Lastly, I think for this to work though-- would have to be a new media promotion including videos targeting this crowd and possible appearances on SNL, etc.

Even if this isn't considered-- the Metallica option is a sure shot, and there's nothing wrong with that...

Those are my worthless two cents in these dread economic times...

What is probably going to hapen:

Jane's Addiction- main NIN supporting act *see Nine Inch Nails*

Metallica- coming back and willing to tour with G'N'R, it'd be a perfect solution

Guns 'N Roses

Nine Inch Nails- if the NIN extends their tour, G'N'R would lose fans hoping to see Robert.  However, if Robert toured with G'N'R the same thing would happen with NIN.  Trent and Axl would beg him to play with them, in the end, they would have to tour together

Loaded- Axl never knocks down the possiblility of him playing with Duff again and vice versa, infact, they note it.  Maybe they have planned this for a long time and they are setting us up.

what I would like to see but won't happen

Guns 'N Roses

Velvet Revolver

Benighted

Muse

Coheed and Cambria

Faldor, that's not necessarily true. I remember tomatoes, bottles and other stuff were thrown at Faith No More when they opened for Metallica/GNR at Giants Stadium in 1992.

I believe it originated from here

http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgi

SPREADING DEMOCRACY AROUND THE WORLD: Axl Rose intends to take the current lineup of Guns N? Roses out on a worldwide stadium tour this summer, industry insiders told rollingstone.com. ?Axl has been basically quiet, keeping out of the limelight for almost 15 years,? said Guns manager Irving Azoff in the news item. ?People think they know him, but they really only know what has been said about him by questionable people. He is a good guy and often misunderstood?he is a professional who has worked very hard to build and maintain a high creative standard for Guns N? Roses, which I support. We have some exciting things in the works this year for GNR, I?m looking forward to it.? Right on the heels of this news come unconfirmed reports about a co-headlining tour with GNR and fellow L.A. hard-rock icons Van Halen. If this pairing comes to pass, we?re betting it?ll move some serious ducats.

I wonder were they'd play in Ireland, we don't really have any stadiums except for Croke park.  And Croke park are only allowed to have 4 gigs a year, which is usually really commercial pop acts, or billy joel and stuff.  Any other venue couldn't really be classified as a stadium.

I fail to see the logic in having Van Halen tour with them; all it does is perpetuate the "has been" perception of GN'R.  When they tour, they need to find an "up and coming" band to open (Black Keys or maybe just Dan Auerbach solo?) and then if they feel the need to co-headline with a big group; perhaps Aerosmith, U2, or maybe Metallica.   I honestly don't see how they can sell out a stadium unless they tour with one of those three.

Yeah, but;

n August of most years since 1981 the grounds of Slane castle are used to host a rock concert. The natural amphitheatre has a 100,000 person capacity and has in the past hosted concerts by Queen, Thin Lizzy, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Guns N' Roses, Neil Young, R.E.M., The Verve, Robbie Williams, Bryan Adams, U2, Stereophonics, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iggy Pop, Foo Fighters, Madonna. Oasis is going to perform this summer. The Stones appeared in 1982 and returned again in August 2007. U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bryan Adams have all released DVDs of their performances at the castle. Madonna remains the only female artist to ever have headlined at the venue.

Thanks man, ive been to Slane castle before for the Chili Pepper gig.  I cant see Axl selling it out though so i thought the RDS might be more realistic.  Chinese Democracy hasn't had much publicity here in Dublin unless your a hardcore Guns fan.  Last time they played the RDS it wasnt really that full.  Hopefully they'll have better luck this time.

well, there r a few options.

if it's gonna be Guns N' Roses and Metallica (which i doubt), then the openers should be Alice In Chains and/or Faith No More.

if it's gonna be Guns N' Roses and Van Halen, then maybe someone like Hot Leg, Chickenfoot or Kid Rock.

if Guns goes out as the only headliner, i'd like to see Chris Cornell or maybe Lacuna Coil open the shows.

Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed & Cambria, Billy Talent, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Baz, System of a Down, Lostprophets, etc...
just get 2-3 solid openers and a major headliner to co-headline with and a stadium tour isn't that far fetched.

Duff McKagans Loaded would be cool choise, just book ticket another show 5th of June in Tampere Finland (got tickets to Helsinki 3rd of june already)

hm and since my 2 brothers play in band their band "AphoreA" would be perfect choice (in my opinion of course) if and when Guns will tour in FINLAND again

check em (AphoreA) out:

Black Stone Cherry
Silvertide
Black Tide

I agree about the whole VH deal, it only furthers the whole washed-out 80's persona some people still associate with GN'R. Get some new and fresh music to open the show. Besides what happned to the days where up and coming bands where given a chance to showcase their talent?!!

A few diffrent ones to check out would be "Lacuna Coil"  a smaller opening band is the INDIE band KHZ.  For somthing completely out there "diablo swing orchestra", however even bringing Helmet back would be cool.  That band seemed to go over well with the crowds.

nickelback i really like them. Or just someone that is big like gnr so it could be a monster bill. it stinks when you only want to see the headliner but lets face it there isn't really much out there today.

Nickelback???,...u kiddin right???

NICKELBACK.

FUCKING.

SUCKS.

If any band could keep me away from a GN'R show, it would be those no-talent pieces of cat shit!!!
I might go just to boo the shit out of them.  Although I'd probably end up getting in a fight or getting kicked out so it probably wouldn't be worth it in the end.

NICKELGAY.

SLIPKNOT not a good example they have sold over what 5 million records I don't think they are dragging anyone down.

As far as Nickleback goes while not much of a fan of them I find the backlash on their success rather hypocritical.  This is what EVERY ONE THINGS A ROCK BAND SHOULD BE.  They are a bunch of buddies who got together and worked their way up to where they are today.  They were not put together by any music excustives ect.  Regardless if you hate them they got their fame the honest way.  They did not have a multi million dollar ad campaign.

As for the internet detroyed the record industry is pure bullshit.  Over 5 billion songs sold by ITUNES, Millions by other sites.  It is the record labels fault they fucked over artists for years stealing every dime from them so the only way they made money was by radio play or live shows they see fuck all from CD sales in general.  This is not just my opinion but that of a few metal bands including a few that are on roadrunner records.

Here are a few that would be great bands to open for G&R.

Buck Cherry
Faster Pussycat
L.A. Guns
The Cult
Cinderella (That's if they are still around)
RATT

These are just a few.
The band that does open for G&R should be a band that plays similar rock & roll / hard-rock or even metal. This way we get more bang for the buck!!!  :peace:

I like Buckcherry, Cinderella and The Cult because they are many levels above the others in terms of musical talent and credibility.  The only ones I could see touring with Guns are Buckcherry and The Cult.  I would prefer one of those two from the list you mentioned.

I actually like the Cinderella idea , Tom had axe last years tour because he blew his vocal cords or something.

As others have stated I think you have to have baz, he is the best opener bar none. Then maybe a little Vienna boys choir followed by 2.5 hrs of solid GnR. It's hard to imagine a Co. headliner that can really stand up against axl and co. although I do understand the whole ticket sales deal.

What's wroNg with Nickelback? it's a good band, really. I would be hapy if they were invited but I guess they are much bigger than this Axl's own version of "Guns N' Roses" in the U.S right now so... I can't see them opening.

- Loaded (would be cool to see Duff again  :))
- THE OFFSPRING (would kick ass! but once again they are much bigger)
- Camp Freddy

Dream would be a Tour with Oasis, RHCP or Muse, but all these bands are much bigger so Axl would be the opener.

I'd like to see Baz come along again. It's amazing value that way as Baz's show alone is a great night out and adding in GNR is just perfect. His frontman style also compliments Axl's in my opinion.

Another idea I'd enjoy would be Buckcherry.

I'd go to a Rob Zombie + GnR tour too.

Finally, Dope opening for GnR would be nice too ( their latest album, No Regrets has a rather AFD vibe and sounds great ).

On the European leg I would like to see GNR/ Buckcherry/ Backyard Babies
now that would be a great lineup. Also it would be great to see them use the instant live format, like bands like Pearl Jam and The Black Crowes have to record shows for sale after the shows. Great way for the band to make some money and great soundboard recordings for the fans.

I do love Eminem, and agree it is a good idea, but I have seen him live twice, and thought he was a horrible live act. Maybe  the sound system was part of it, but all he did was sing (somewhat) along to his records. He would only sing like half the words, and you could hear his studio voice in the backgroud. Actually, kinda reminded me of Vince Neil live, only better.

I fully agree. I think Eminem is a great talent, but live, I am not so sure. I would also worry about the younger fans of Eminem and their treatment of GN'R. I think GN'R need a GN'R audience in attendance to make the night special.

I would also worry about ticket prices. Eminem and cru have a price. Guns, as some know here, are also not cheap to hire. In the current economic climate, one has to be careful.

Bands like Backyard Babies make sense. They know GN'R already and would, generally, be received positively by a GN'R audience. Very new bands tend to slate bands they have supported to gain media attention so this should be taken into consideration also.

You know with a good amount of the newer stuff having a prog. element to it I wonder how a band like Dream Theater would be received with GNR?  Though if you wanted to go for a more gritty rock vibe I think a band like Vains of Jenna could be cool. Or I know Extreme just put a new CD out last year that could be cool.

It would probably be too much "work" for the person opening but .....
..... have the GNR guys (besides Axl) each take turns being the opening act with their solo material.  : ok:

Like one show Chris' SexTapes band could open ... the next show Tommy could bring in his band to do stuff from 'Village Gorilla Head' and Replacements' songs ... the next show Ron could bring in his band to do his 'Abnormal' songs ... and so on and so on.

That would kill two birds with one stone:
1.  The fans would get to better know each band member on his own merits.
2.  The opening acts won't (hopefully) get booed off the stage.  :hihi:

I have some of her albums and it's good. Beautifull voice. I don't know if she could open for Guns though, but I'd like to see a duet with Axl one day.
She did a duet with Santana a while back and it was pretty good.  It was even a Hit single from What I remember.

:hihi:

This is a really cool idea. Some years BLS played on Ozzfest then Zakk came back to play with Ozzy. Plus Sixx:AM was going the same thing last year on Ozzfest. It'd be cool to see.

So who? I tell you, I saw Brian Adams last year and it was one of the best Rock show I have ever seen. I think a lot of people who grew up with GN'R also grew up with Bryan Adams, it was the same erea, late 80's/early 90's. Everybody knows him. Great artist and great music. He is very respected.

Yeah but people that grew up with GN'R had taste.

I hope you haven't seen the "Creed" thread..

maybe one of the hotter up and coming rock bands from whatever country/continent they are touring, something like: ireland/UK - have million dollar reload open; australia/newzealand- maybe wolfmother (of course they are opening for AC/DC during the aussy leg of their tour),  US - Loaded (well, maybe not)?? but something along those lines :-\

I would never usually add my opinion to a thread like this because the band will choose who they want as a support, as and when they tour. But I will say, I would love it if Axl was to check out this fucking amazing Australian band called Mammal.

They would really do the guns tour proud as an opening act. I saw them at Birmingham Carling Academy last night. You guys should check them out. They are very very good!!!

Check ouy my My Space one of their tunes is on there. Fucking great band!!! http://www.myspace.com/mikeaka33

I say no opening band let GNR perform for a 2hrs and play as much of the new stuff live that hasnt been played. But if there is an opening band it will be some one much lesser known especially if its only for a couple of shows what bands gonna go for what is at this point maybe 3 shows. If it were a longer tour then yes im sure alot of bands would jump at the chance to open. And people stop with bands like Aerosmith they are too big of a band to ever open for GNR at this stage in both bands careers. I love the new GNR stuff but i dont know if they have the credibility yet to have as big a band or close to as big as GNR opening up for em.

The whole concept of opening acts is interesting.

Obviously most people are there for the headliner and don't pay attention to the opening act(s).

So you could either go with a band that's in the same genre as the headliner, or go for something totally different.

In both cases, chances are the opening acts will get booed and/or ignored!

I think it's cool to see bands that aren't necessarily similar to the headliner. Obviously it's not always a good idea. Depends on the crowd...

It always seems to help if the opening act has at least one "known" song and plays it.  :hihi:

Maybe the thread title better be "tweet @bumblefoot #bands I'd like GNR to tour with" so that people can see it's bumble tweet.

And why not tweet Bumble at twitter as well.

Ace Freeley has a new album that many of his contemporaries seem to really dig.  He's a well respected artist in the rock world.  Anvil has been opening for AC DC on their latest tour dates as far as I know.

You should, above all Queensryche. Great, great, GREAT band. Empire and Promise Land are terrific records. Furthermore, Operation Mindcrime I, is one of the best conceptual album ever, beside The Wall and Tommy. Axl used to like Queensryche a lot, I guess he still does...

Unless they want to do a double bill, I think it's GNR's obligation to give the opening spot to someone just breaking into the business.

When they are ready to do S AM, let me know, there's a kick ass band out of Argentina I'd love to see get on the bill.

And since they are doing dates in Asia and two in Japan, The birthday (featuring Chiba Yusuke and Kuhara Kazuyuki from Thee Michelle gun elephant and the great guitar player Imai Akinobu, from Rosso): they put out great songs (Stupid, Kiki the pixy, Alicia, Namida ga koboresou, Calendar girl, Ano ko no suitcase, Press factory,...) and live, they're quite fuckin' good. Buckcherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed & Cambria, Billy Talent, Kid Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Baz, System of a Down, Lostprophets, etc...
just get 2-3 solid openers and a major headliner to co-headline with and a stadium tour isn't that far fetched.
so pumped for when this thing gets a rollin'!
System of a Down said they'd reform and open for GNR if the old lineup ever reunited.  I love'em, but I don't think they're an option.

OMG!! I didn't know SOAD had said this. It's my second favorite band ever, but as they are on hiatus I never thought of suggesting them.

yes - but would Billy Corgan's ego allow him to open for Gn'R? unlikely; but i'd love to see it happen though!

by the way, any chance of Sixx:A.M. having an opening slot?
Nikki did double duty for both Crue & SixxAM during Cruefest1; Ashba could pull it off for the Gn'R tour & it'd be baddass

Would the Smashing Pumpkins be a good fit ?

I saw the reformed Smashing Pumpkins and they put on a good show; though unlike GNR, they have a touch of the "Radiohead syndrome" in that they don't usually play their hits.  Makes you appreciate GNR's hit-focused set lists a bit more when you see a band play nothing but deep cuts that only appease the die-hard fans.

Mind you, I don't think Billy Corgan's ego would allow himself to "open" for anyone, let alone GNR.  The only band that big bands will open for these days is the Rolling Stones.

Cheers,

Andrew

If they were to go with some of the bigger Canadian bands out there right now, my vote would be Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, IllScarlett or perhaps Default.

I know Billy Talent and IllScarlett both released CDs this year and our free during the months of January and February.  Not a huge fan of either band (though the drummer in my band's brother is the lead guitarist in IllSarlett), they'd both be a good choice in terms of draw and sound.  Bill Talent I know is huge in Europe and Canada, though not well known elsewhere.

illScarlett would be doable

Billy Talent is too big in Canada at this point. They're playing the ACC in March - headlining. It would be awesome to see them open, I love them live (I have tix to the ACC show) but I doubt they're going to open when they've got their own headlining tour 2 months later.

I kind of like the idea of a local band opening for one of the spots for Regina and Stoon they have the local "Into Eternity" who have toured with megadeath so they can do a show this size.

Anvil is a interesting idea.

As for Nightwish I would love to see that happen but they just finished a crazy 2-3 year world tour and my understanding is that they are on break until 2011.

However there is "Diablo swing orchestra" which might be interesting.

Another band would be "Silversun pickups"  I saw them live a few months back and they put on an amazing show, while the songs are not heavy they are very guitar centric and I think would go over well with the GnR crowd.

As for mixing it up such as having a rap group open, or D.J. group I don't think it will work well at all with the GnR crowd.  I am all for some change I actually think "Helmet" from the last tour fit well with the crowd I know I would be thrilled to get to see them again live.

I dont think Loaded is a good idea tbh.  I mean they play Its so easy, dust n'bones, so fine etc in their set - so we'd hear Loaded play ISE and then GnR play it a bit later on?? Nah..
I love the thought that as Axl intimated, something could happen with Duff in the future, but to expect them to be on the same bill on a tour together over and above one date is a bit much.
Loaded are a good band and I can see why people want them - but I prefer local bands getting a chance, or some other suggestions here like The Crooked Vultures or Motorhead

While this would be my first choice. Honestly, Alice is a little too big a name IMO.

Doubt they'd do it, but it would be my number one choice.

they aren't a bigger name than Guns N' Roses.  They would make a great opening act.

Bach does the job well too.   I wouldn't mind seeing him on the tour again.

i wasn't saying they were but I think they are too big to open for anyone really. Just an opinion though. Its not intended as a slight to Guns.

Yep. Agree here.

A question: Do you guys think that they would do it? More to the point do you think AIC is too big to open for Guns?

I feel they are but i don't keep up with music like some on here may. Just curious?

I don't think Alice In Chains would have any problem opening up for Guns. And no, I don't think they are regarded by most as being "too big to open for Guns."

There may be some AIC diehards who feel this way, but the majority certainly wouldn't.

Check 'em out:

http://www.myspace.com/billytalent (Rusted From the Rain is a good song to check out)
http://www.myspace.com/illscarlett

Cheers,

Andrew

illScarlett would be doable

Billy Talent is too big in Canada at this point.

Agreed. Billy Talent in the US and Europe would be great though. They are fine people and a great band

Phoenix or Band of Horses.

Phoenix is one fine band. I don't think it'd fit though with Guns...too alternative.

I'll bring Dinosaur Jr. It'd be awesome having two of my favorite bands at the same show

Saw them with Def Leppard and Poison this summer.  They're currently in Vegas playing The Beatles Sergeant Peppers, I believe.  Good live band, but not a good match for a GNR show.

i don't know, their fifth in the billboard album sales and check my brain is all over the radio (#1 billboard rock song).

Going on Leno in a couple of days should help their case. I dont think its as cut and dry as a couple of die hards. If thats the case then they have a shitload of diehards.

No doubt. I think it would be especially strategic for a U.S. tour. Reintroduce everyone to guns, Alice is doing really well on the radio and in the states.

I think people would pay as a curiosity to see axl and knowing they would like the Alice part. Then when Axl and co. blow em away, it'll leave a bigger impression.

Right now in the states Guns is struggling big time, but they could become a big tour act if they just get some momentum.

I think snagging Ashba will turn out to be a huge coup. the guy can produce records and it sounds like that was a big stumbling block for Axl with all the
guys he went through comprising Chinese Democracy.
