I tried getting into Zep some months back and thought they were ok.

Bought 2 Pink Floyd albums last night and I am in love and inspired and seriously fucking moved beyond words.

pink floyd have some great guitar solos.

but led zeppelin for me, they rock more and have more energy to there songs...i personally, can listen to that more often. i have to be in the right frame of mind for floyd.

I haven't heard all their material, just the hits...

The Zeppelin for me.

I only know Floyd's more well-known songs (Comfortably Numb, See Emily Play, Money etc.) whereas I've got all of LZ's albums. Perhaps Pink Floyd are too sophisticated for someone like me Grin

However, I like The Nile Song by Floyd. It's on the album Music From The Film More and it's fairly heavy for them.

Also, Floyd have awesome album covers Cheesy

Since it's like comparing apples and oranges, and it all comes down to opinion, it's not exactly a "fair" thread, but it is really kind of cool to see who everyone around here favors.  They both have a lot to offer...

... At least as far as The Wall goes. Your biggest mistake would be to look at either of those two albums, with a view that they're the best that the band had to offer

(though I'm not necesarily saying that was not the case with the latter...).

My advice would be to look past those two albums to begin with. I guess it depends what Floyd you're after... If it's the trippy psychedelic rock along the lines of See Emily Play with Lucifer Sam and all the like, then your only choice is Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Err. A fantastic album!, but not necesarily a great Pink Floyd album.

... Well, it was. But, err, looking at the career as a whole, it wasn't. Though it remains one of my top five. Err.

I'm not sure actually.

... Wait!!, I just reread your question. I thought that it was one to start off with. Bollocks to this post then, maybe DSotM is the album that you have to hear.

I didn't read the original question as to what was the *best* album, only a good one to start off with (if that makes sense).   Anyone more well-versed in Floyd than I am - and believe me, that wouldn't take much - would have a much better take on it.

   I think this tough as hell to answer because both bands are very different. Depends what you like I guess. Zep was the ultimate "rock band" with rock stars as we see them today. The guys in Floyd were always more out of the spotlight and sort of more "artistic" I guess. Really hard to say who is better.

Their shows are so different. Floyd with their visual ideas. Zepplin with Bonzo/Moby Dick and jamming... you never heard of Floyd jamming 30 minutes of Have a Cigar...

I've seen Floyd (without Roger) and I guess no one has seen Zepplin with Bonzo on this web-site...

Who is better U2 vs Guns??? flame away but it's tough to say because they are so different.

Motley vs Guns, ok. You can try to compare (Guns win hands down) but you get my drift, they are somewhat similar.

Take both's most popular albums DSOTM or LZ IV or maybe The wall with Physical Grafitti (only because both are Dbl albums and released close to the end of both bands career). Tough Call...

How can you compare these 4 albums? That's why most top lists suck, it's fuckin' hard.

but zep is more universal and timeless. They don't sing about how the society at the time and place suck.

when I hear no quarter, I see a wet forest, dark night and a moon. their music is picturesque.

  I adore Led Zepp, but Pink Floyd are in a league of their own, nobody can touch them, NOBODY ! Not The Zep, not Guns N' Roses, not The Beatles.
   As far as hits go, Queen can offer some competiton, but listening to a Floyd album from start to finish is a surreal experience...

Zeppelin takes it for me.  Like someone else said previously, you need to be in the right frame of mind for Pink Floyd.  Zep you can throw in at any time and rock the F out.  Sometimes Floyd will just put you to sleep.

I'm not the most appropriate person to give a serious opinion on that, as Pink Floyd is my favourite band ever, but as far as opinion goes I've never heard of a band that released 4 perfect albums in a row like that:

1973 - Dark Side of the Moon

1975 - Wish You Were Here

1977 - Animals

1979 - The Wall

Possibly the toughest question ever

Luckily they are so different from each other, that no one can really say for sure

I'd give a slight edge to Floyd myself - not a knock on Zep, but Floyd is just incredible in every aspect
