This should be fun.

Let's vote.

I'll go first.....VAN FUCKING HALEN!

For influence and overall impact? Van Halen (not Van Hagar, I mean just the real Van Halen). But for my own enjoyment, I prefer some classic Bon Jovi.

I'll go with BJ on this one. Every time I hear Eddie tapping, I feel like beating him over the head with his guitar. :P

Van Halen all the way - they invented hair metal, Bon Jovi were just using the template Van Halen had laid out

I agree. I think BJ (at least of the 80s) are a sort of pussafied Springsteen/Van Halen, mass produced for soccer moms and 12 year old girls.

That said, I got give Bon Jovi a lot of credit. Hats off to them for managing to survive grunge, post-grunge, nu-metal and now emo, and still be relevant, all over the world. They (Richie and Jon) put the band above all other petty bullshit and have consistently made the right career move.

While Van Halen survived grunge and were successful well into the mid-90s, all the lead-singer bullshit really did them in. While BJ released new music and gained a new, younger audience these last few years, Ed and Al just sat at home and drank/smoked while VH passed into a Deep Purple/UFO level of 80s AOR nostalgia obscurity. Nice going guys.

That said, comparing VH with BJ is like comparing Chaplin with the three stooges.

David Lee Roth is one of the greatest frontmen in the history of rock. In his prime, he was the man. While his act can get old, when he's good, his wit, charm and charisma is unmatched.

Have you ever listened to Fair Warning btw?

I prefer Bon Jovi... Van Halen is soooo  cheesy. Although I like some of their songs, and EVH is a genious

Bon Jovi is cheesy too, but they have lots of good songs and managed to reinvent themselves.. Off course, nowadays they suck.. But up until These Days their albums were great

Van Halen could never even dream of making a song like Dry County

Bon Jovi are far superior to Van Halen.

Jon Is a much more talented frontman than DLR are u kidding me?

Roth was a clown with his gay outfits and stupid karate kickin shit but Jon Destroys his audiences with his performances.

Jon is a far better musician and singer than Roth.

Richie is underrated as a guitar player and isnt too far behind EVH.

BJ have more hits, more album sales and overall better songs.

dave lee roth, a frontman many many frontmen in the 80s copied.

one axl highly respected as did many other band members.

dave brought about a new era of frontmen ready for the 80s to set it out from the 70s.

he was part of a band which built the formula bon jovi used to get famous in a watered down keyboard ridden version of it.

dave is amazing to watch compared to bon jovi, who yes is a good vocalist, doesnt own the stage like dave.

Let's take a look.

Quote

In terms of range, I'll concede JBJ is a better singer. But that doesn't really make him a better singer. I'll take Roth's bluesy, charismatic flat-tire vocals over the Michael Bolton styling of JBJ any day of the week. Also don't forget Sammy Hagar, who's technically as good a singer as JBJ, but doesn't sound as corny or contrived. Although I will further concede that there are some shitty songs like "Why Can't This Be Love" that are about as bad as anything from Bon Jovi.

Quote
Roth was a clown with his gay outfits and stupid karate kickin shit but Jon Destroys his audiences with his performances.

The videos I've seen of Bon Jovi from the 80s aren't too flattening. JBJ had the spandex, teased hair, lipstick, just like everyone else.

Quote
Jon is a far better musician and singer than Roth.

At making candy-ass fluff, sure.

Quote

BJ have sold 120 million albums world-wide, VH is at 80 million. And I agree that BJ has better songs, if you like pussafied, milk-toast.

Way to go DIck

Take DLR's best lyric compared to a single line in a BJ song.

JBJ:
Patron Saints of Lonely Souls
tell this boy which way to go
You got the car you got the keys
farewell to mediocrity

JBJ:
When You want to give up
and your heart's bout to break
Remember that you're perfect
God makes no mistakes

AND THE FUCK U TO ALL OF U

I've seen a million faces
and I've Rocked THEM ALL

One of the most famous lines ever written

So BAM!

name one verse as famous a THAT!

one verse as famous as that, i can do many....as i dont think that lines very famous, i didnt even know of it till i heard the song, and i can bet anyone who isnt much into bon jovi has no idea, but everyone can sing to some van halen songs.

though by far not there best, and a bit tacky compared to there raw rockier older stuff,  "jump", is a song far more famous than the lines you quoted

"Jump" was inspired by Dave watching a guy threaten to jump off a building. Lyrically, not the most creative song in the world, but I like it. It's a song about taking chances, living life to the fullest, totally non-pretentious.

I think 5150 was really the sell-out album. Dave's Eat 'Em and Smile blows it out of the water.

looks like bon jovi got to that point from the start with there pussy keyboards.

they annoy me, the great riff to raise your hands suddenly blasted with gay keyboards.

I cant even believe this is even an arguement. ?I like Bon Jovi. ?But they have pretty much been living off of "Slippery when wet" for 20 years. ?I know that New Jersey had some good songs too. ?But Bon Jovi is pretty much an "adult contemporary" band now.
Van Halen, on the other hand, even if you only count DLR Van Halen, was one of the greatest rock bands ever. ?With argueably the greatest frontmen ever(after Axl). ?And guitarist. ?

Mick Jagger
Steven Tyler
Freddie Mercury
Bruce Springsteen
Robert Plant

Any band who have almost as many famous Cover Songs than originals cant be better than a band like Bon Jovi.

Also who has the longest career?

Bon jovi by a mile

Sammy Hagar sucks, Please, its an insult to even bring him into this discussion. Van Hagar were way below Van Halen and shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence as Bon Jovi.

Jon has written way more great songs by himself than Dave

Runaway
Livin In Sin
Blaze of Glory
Bed Of Roses
Always

Whats Dave got?

Just a Gigolo? please

Hell even Van Halen hate Dave

Imagine Jon Bon Jovi with Eddie Van Halen

Seems to me people on this forum use Axl Rose Dick Flavored Mouthwash and agree with anything he likes or says.

So he says Bon jovi suck my dick and praises DLR therefore most of the drones on here are gonna act like Dave is better when is completely outclassed in every frontman category except the category of "Which frontman can do the widest splits category"

Yeah thats why their last album only debuted at Number 1 whipping the shit out of everyone's little darlings the "White Stripes'

Man it must be nice to suck and live off one album like that.

They play 3 songs off SWW in concert unlike another band I know that truly lives off one album.

Anyhow Bon Jovi's last 4 albums all debuted in the top 5. Every tour was amongst the top grossing tours of the year.

Sure they suck, They only sold out 3 straight nights in a football stadium. If they were really good they wouldve sold out a month straight right? ::)

DLR-

It's pretty obvious that you have a set mental image in your head of Bon Jovi only based on a few songs chosen as singles. No matter what youtube links I'd offer - I have a feeling you wouldn't even care to look. How the hell do you choose to compare the lyrics of 'In A Simple Rhyme' to the lyrics of 'You Give Love A Bad Name'? 'You Give Love A Bad Name's' lyrics are obviously tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be sentimental or deep. If you want to belittle Bon Jovi's lyrics why don't you actually do your research and look within the album tracks. Oh of course, not, you know the hits so you must know all Bon Jovi songs, right? ::)

What a fucking fallacy.

It doesn't take much research to find great Bon Jovi lyrics:

Dry County

Across the border they turn
Water into wine
Some say it's the devil's blood
They're squeezing from the vine
Some say it's a savior
In these hard and desperate times
For me it helps me to forget
That we're just born to die

I came here like so many did
To find the better life
To find my piece of easy street
To finally be alive
And I know nothing good comes easy
And all good things take some time
I made my bed I'll lie in it
To die in it's the crime

You can't help but prosper
Where the streets are paved with gold
They say the oil wells ran deeper here
than anybody's known
I packed up on my wife and kid
And left them back at home

Now there's nothing in this pay dirt
The ghosts are all I know
Now the oil's gone
The money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

In the blessed name of Jesus
I heard a preacher say
That we are God's children
And He'd be back someday
And I hoped that he knew
Something as he drank his cup of wine
I didn't have too good of a feeling
As I head out to the night

I cursed the sky to open
I begged the clouds for rain
I prayed to God for water
For this burning in my veins
It was like my soul's on fire
And I had to watch the flames
All my dreams went up in ashes
And my future blew away

Now the oil's gone
And the money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Men spend their whole lives
Waiting praying for their big reward
But it seems sometimes
The payoff leaves you feeling
Like a dirty whore
If I could choose the way I'll die
Make it by the gun or knife
'Cause the other way there's too much pain
Night after night after night

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Santa Fe

They say that no man is an island
And good things come to those who wait
But the things I hear are there
Just to remind me
Every dog will have his day

The spirits they intoxicate me
I watched them infiltrate my soul
They try to say it's too late for me
Tell my guns I'm coming home

I swear I'm gonna live forever
Tell my maker he can wait
I'm riding somewhere south of heaven
Heading back to Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

Once I was promised absolution
There's only one solution for my sins
You gotta face your ghosts and know
With no illusions
That only one of you is going home again

And I blame this world for making
A good man evil
It's this world that can drive a
Good man mad
And it's this world that turns a killer
Into a hero
Well I blame this world for making
A good man bad

Now I ain't getting into heaven
If the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

So I save a prayer
For when I need it most
To the Father, Son
And the Holy Ghost
And sign it from a sinner
With no name
When I meet my maker
When I close the book
On the hearts I broke
And the lives I took
Will he walk away
'Cause my soul's
Too late to save

Now I ain't getting into heaven
If the devil has his way
I swear I'm gonna live forever
Heading back to Santa Fe
Got debts to pay in Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

VH hands down , haha I had to get into the subject. VH changed music forever , bon jovi was just another band. EVH re invented tapping , Sambora didn't really do much.

How the fuck do u Re-invent something?

Are you a guitarist? Do you understand the importance of EVH ? Reinvent , means he took something and took it to a whole new level. Along with Randy Rhodes , he streamlined it.

How do you reinvent , simple

"Definitions of reinvent on the Web:

    * bring back into existence; "The candidate reinvented the concept of national health care so that he would get elected"
    * create anew and make over; "He reinvented African music for American listeners" "

Eddie Van Halen reinvented tapping on the guitar.

Yes I am a guitar player and I don't tap

Last I checked the best guitar player of the last 20 years, I think u may have heard of him.......... SLASH doesnt tap.

EVH is great but they don't have the catalog of songs Bon Jovi have.

EVH is like Buckethead, Steve Vai, Bumble foot only he was able to better hone his virtuoso talent into some melodic and ear pleasing mainstream riffs.

Take joe Perry for example

He is a legend but I hate his fuckin guitar solos. To me they are the longest most boring pieces of shit I have ever heard in my life.

Do you know WHY slash doesn't tap? Because he said straight foward , Dude thats Eddie's thing. So since BJ have more songs , they are better? Umm i take QUALITY over Quantity. Joe perry solos , are far from long? It's funny how you cite Slash as being the best guitarist in 20 years , and then rip on one of his biggest influences! But you aren't denying that EVH did reinvent it?

Jon is

Better lyricist
Better Piano player
Better Guitar player
Better Bass Player
Better singer
Better Songwriter

DLR

Better Gymnast

Jon Bon Jovi:

ohhhhhhh, we're half-way there, ohhh ohh livin' on a prayer.
David Lee Roth:

She aint waiting til she gets older,?
Her feet are making tracks in teh winter snow,?
She got a rainbow that touches her shoulder,?
She be headed where the thunder rolls

Jon Bon Jovi-

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, you give love a bad name

DLR-

She made her mountains sing.?
Birds against an icy sky.?
And I heard bells ringin'?
I think I heard an angel sigh.

It's pretty obvious that you have a set mental image in your head of Bon Jovi only based on a few songs chosen as singles. No matter what youtube links I'd offer - I have a feeling you wouldn't even care to look. How the hell do you choose to compare the lyrics of 'In A Simple Rhyme' to the lyrics of 'You Give Love A Bad Name'? 'You Give Love A Bad Name's' lyrics are obviously tongue-in-cheek and not meant to be sentimental or deep. If you want to belittle Bon Jovi's lyrics why don't you actually do your research and look within the album tracks. Oh of course, not, you know the hits so you must know all Bon Jovi songs, right? ::)

What a fucking fallacy.

It doesn't take much research to find great Bon Jovi lyrics:

Dry County

Across the border they turn
Water into wine
Some say it's the devil's blood
They're squeezing from the vine
Some say it's a savior
In these hard and desperate times
For me it helps me to forget
That we're just born to die

I came here like so many did
To find the better life
To find my piece of easy street
To finally be alive
And I know nothing good comes easy
And all good things take some time
I made my bed I'll lie in it
To die in it's the crime

You can't help but prosper
Where the streets are paved with gold
They say the oil wells ran deeper here
than anybody's known
I packed up on my wife and kid
And left them back at home

Now there's nothing in this pay dirt
The ghosts are all I know
Now the oil's gone
The money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

In the blessed name of Jesus
I heard a preacher say
That we are God's children
And He'd be back someday
And I hoped that he knew
Something as he drank his cup of wine
I didn't have too good of a feeling
As I head out to the night

I cursed the sky to open
I begged the clouds for rain
I prayed to God for water
For this burning in my veins
It was like my soul's on fire
And I had to watch the flames
All my dreams went up in ashes
And my future blew away

Now the oil's gone
And the money's gone
And the jobs are gone
Still we're hangin' on

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Men spend their whole lives
Waiting praying for their big reward
But it seems sometimes
The payoff leaves you feeling
Like a dirty whore
If I could choose the way I'll die
Make it by the gun or knife
'Cause the other way there's too much pain
Night after night after night

Down in dry county
They're swimming in the sand
Praying for some holy water
To wash the sins from off our hand
Here in dry county
The promise has run dry
Where nobody cries
And no one's getting out of here alive

Santa Fe

They say that no man is an island
And good things come to those who wait
But the things I hear are there
Just to remind me
Every dog will have his day

The spirits they intoxicate me
I watched them infiltrate my soul
They try to say it's too late for me
Tell my guns I'm coming home

I swear I'm gonna live forever
Tell my maker he can wait
I'm riding somewhere south of heaven
Heading back to Santa Fe
It's judgement day in Santa Fe

That's not true:

-Ice Cream Man
-You Really Got Me
-You're No Good
-Dancing in the streets
-Pretty Woman

I think that's it...so five cover songs that were hits, out of like, 40 hit or radio staples.

Bon Jovi number 1 singles: Billboard top 200 not the bullshit mainstream or modern rock number 1 which really doesn't count

Livin On A Prayer
You Give Love A Bad Name
Bad Medicine
I'll Be There For You
Blaze of Glory

Top 10 hits:
Prayer
Bad Name
Wanted
Bad Medicine
Lay Your Hands On Me
Born to Be My Baby
Livin In Sin
I'll Be There For You
Bed of Roses
Always
This Ain't A Love Song

Top 40
Prayer
Bad Name
Wanted
Bad Medicine
Lay Your Hands On Me
Born to Be My Baby
Livin In Sin
I'll Be There For You
Bed of Roses
Always
This Ain't A Love Song
Runaway
In and Out Of Love
Keep The Faith
In These Arms
It's my Life
Thank You For Lovin Me
Everyday
Misunderstood
Who Says You Can't Go Home *First rock band to have number 1 country single*
You Wanna Make A Memory

These are real no bullshitted inflated numbers

Also "Never Say Goodbye" was never released as a single but easily would've been a top 10 single.

Take Van Halen's 10 biggest hits vs Bon Jovi's 10 biggest hits and Bon Jovi destroy them.

To answer the Joe Perry thing:

I dont give a fuck if Joe Perry is Slash's brother, lover or Gay Cousin

Just cause Slash likes someone doesnt mean I HAVE TO AGREE WITH HIM

God damn Axl says something in an interview about DLR and u guys are ready to recline over onto Dave's nuts like Axl is your pimp and whatever he says is great u must obey.

I wonder how many of u fuckin drones went out and bought W.A.S.P. Cds after that interview and forced yourselves to like that shit just cause Axl does.

Its pathetic!

I love Joe Perry don't get me wrong but a whole bunch of his solos from Permanent Vacation on are just boring to me and great 4 minute songs seem to last 20 minutes once Tyler stops singing. Its like great songs with filler solos just so Joe will have a stamp on it.

Take "Love in An Elevator"

That song is great for 2 and a half minutes and then that fuckin thing seems like it never ever ends. I always hit the ole skip button after about 3 minutes of it.

And I'm sorry but I don't have numbers for top ten hits. What I listed are hit singles and classic rock radio staples.

I wont dispute the fact that Bon Jovi has sold more albums and presumably had more hits and are more relevant now, due to VH's career suicide moves. That said, in terms of influence and quality of music, it's just so one-sided it isn't even funny.

Maybe you wont be a VH fan, but I urge you to check out albums like Women and Children First, Van Halen and Fair Warning to see what the fuss is about.

Bon Jovi has had many amazing accomplishments in their career and are still VERY relevant today.  They've withstood the test of time, have a deep catalog of hit songs.  But with all that being said, they don't come close to Van Halen.  Unfortunately, VH is a mess now, and has been ever since Sammy left.  I obviously prefer the DLR version, but Sammy and VH put out a lot of great songs.  He's no slouch.  Their early demise hurts them in this debate, but the quality of their music is just plain better.  No knock on Bon Jovi, I like them.  They're just not in the same league.  And really, it's tough to compare the two bands anyway because they're really not similar.  Bon Jovi hasn't really "rocked" since the early 90's.  They've played some softer stuff, and they've done it well.  VH is, always has been, and always will be straight up rock and roll.

Van Halen musically is better, EVH is leagues ahead of Richie Sambora

Bon Jovi, never really got into them.  They make good bar music, but I feel like they're over commercialized, they make "fast food" music

You could say the same of Van Halen, I suppose.  Bon Jovi has a better singing voice than Roth or Hagar, but they all have corny lyrics from where I'm standing

I would rather listen to Van Halen, musically they're a lot better and I don't think a great deal of the lead singers.  Yeah David Lee Roth is a legendary frontman and performer but as a singer-songwriter I don't think he's that great

Nah, the rock ones are the charts that DO count... the top 200 just means it appeals to teenage girls!

Van Halen gets played on Classic Rock stations and Bon Jovi gets played on EZ rock... my tastes usual favour classic rock bands and this case is no exception.? Bon Jovi also loses serious points for that brutal acoustic hits CD...

Yeah thats why their last album only debuted at Number 1 whipping the shit out of everyone's little darlings the "White Stripes'

Man it must be nice to suck and live off one album like that.

They play 3 songs off SWW in concert unlike another band I know that truly lives off one album.

Anyhow Bon Jovi's last 4 albums all debuted in the top 5. Every tour was amongst the top grossing tours of the year.

Sure they suck, They only sold out 3 straight nights in a football stadium. If they were really good they wouldve sold out a month straight right? ::)

Err, i think you'll find that gnr play loads off appetite because that's what the fans want to hear, anyways why have you bought gnr into this argument,is it cos your running out of bad things to say about VH?

Why don't you remove yourself from his ass.

Since D knows so much about selling out, what does he make of BJ doing Duracell commercials?  Just to bring up one example.

VH changed music and conquered the world, while BJ basically ripped off others.

U guys are crazy

Eddie Van Halen alone cant carry that band.

Van Halen have like 3 songs that I think are even half way decent.

Panama,Jump, Hot For Teacher......

I won't go into how bad Sammy Hagar is, He is horrible in every shape way and form

Dave at least has personality and was a good entertainer

So I say compare BJ to Roth Van Halen but Sammy Hagar Van Halen sucks.
I think DLR is generic but I guess seeing how all of u guys on here like discussing Axl's teeth, clothes and shoe size, u all are in to starin at Dave in those tight Jane Fonda pants he wears.

Also Sambora plays a bluesy guitar style, he has a totally different style than EVH but Sambora's LOAP,Wanted and Lay Your Hands on Me Riffs are pretty damn good.

I of co urse am not fool enough to put Sambora in Eddie's league however but I think as superior as Eddie is to Richie, Jon is to Van Halen's frontmen.

U can't fuck with Eddie Van Halen, NO one will ever be able to deny his genius.

Its just I don't think he ever had THE AXL ROSE, THE STEVEN TYLER,

That quintessential amazing frontman to take those amazing guitar riffs and make them even more legendary by providing great vocals, lyrics and melodies.

Roth was an amazing showman but his voice and lyrics for the most part suck.

Alright, here's where your argument goes south.  You believe Sammy sucks.  And I'm sure many people agree.  Obviously, DLR is the real Van Halen, always, forever.  BUT you bring up top 40 hits, billboard 200 hits, whatever to defend Bon Jovi.  I'd be willing to bet, and I've got no facts to back this up, BUT I'd be willing to bet that the Sammy Hagar led Van Halen had more radio friendly top 40 hits than the DLR version.  Thus making your Bon Jovi had more hits argument useless, which I think we all knew from the start.  Those top 40 lists are nice to look at and put on your resume, but for the most part they don't amount to a whole lot.

While the Sammy era  had four number one albums, the DLR albums sold more over-all. The self-titled album and 1984 alone sold 20 million copies, about as much as all four Sammy albums combined.

Once again, speaking as someone who was there at the time, there is no comparison between the two. You are talking about two very different bands from two very different eras - Van Halen 1 came out in 1972, Bon Jovi was a pheomenom of (1987?).

The only thing they both have in common was that they got girls in harder rock type music.

HAHAHA Gary Cherone! What a fuckin Tool

Roth has a great voice. Go sing Panama karaoke and then you can talk.

OOPs! Misread the album cover wrongly. Mistook an 8 for a 2.......still my point stands they are almost a decade apart. End of the 70s was a completely different time to the end of the 80s.

Bon Jovi is a Pop Rock Band.

Van Halen is a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal band.

Van Halen is a better rock band.  Bon Jovi is a better pop band.

D, I love Dry Country.  Jon has a great voice.

But when you wanna rock, Ain't Talkin Bout Love, and Panama, and those others just rock harder.  Close call, but Van Halen for their musical influnce edges out BJ.

Several years ago in a Beavis and Butthead book they had all these vs.

David Lee Roth vs. Vince Neil, etc.

One was Jon Bon Jovi vs. a blade of grass.

I'd go with Bon Jovi on this one, as long as Jon has a megaphone and starts singing....

I give Trent Reznor credit where Credit is due and I like NIN but this is Bon Jovi

Jon has a much better voice than Trent, Richie is better than any NIN guitarist

BJ have more hits, more albums sold, they are a much bigger band then and now

So really there is no comparison

Trent makes more complex music but that doesnt mean it is better.

Bon Jovi hands down win this one.

well since RATT were quite a big band in the 80s associated with the same movement and had bon jovi support them ona tour.....

let the vs begin

although bon jovi maintained a successful career longer, i preffer RATTS music.

Just brilliant, stephens rough vocals mix perfectly with there riff filled songs. every track on the first 2 albums especially are dynamite! the riffs are amazing and the guitar duels are brilliant

lets try keep it with bon jovi 80s to very early 90s era so its more comparable rather than bon jovis new pop n country albums

I love Ratt's later work/hits - Like Shame Shame Shame, and Nobody Rides for Free. Also hits like Round & Round, Lay It Down, Way Cool Junior, etc.

But it's Bon Jovi they're going against... Bon Jovi have been kickin and puttin out newer hits i.e. It's My Life and Have A Nice Day to add on to an already amazing back catalogue.

If it was Ratt vs. Cinderella or Faster Pussycat - I'd say Ratt

Bon Jovi kills RATT.  RATT can't even headline their own nostalgia tours, playing second fiddle to Poison.  I saw Bon Jovi headline a few years back, in support of the first of way too many shitty new albums aimed at little girls).  Most of it was the good stuff, though.

well, when they havent put out an album since 99, but that album never got any pushing anyway, so 91 and they havent really toured as the full original line up. one member is dead the bassist isnt in them, i can see why.

there albums are far more powerful than bon jovi, they just rock.

Personally I like Ratt much more than BJ. Not saying one is better than the other, to me they are different styles of rock n roll. BJ is much more pop friendly/soft.

My .04-adjusted for inflation.

I'm from NJ all my life, right by where Jon grew up. I don't like most pop-hair metal sounding stuff from the eighties but I have to admit I rock out to some old school Jon Bon Jovi. Maybe it's the water. That being said, I think everything Bon Jovi have done over the past ten years is total garbage. It's soccor mom music. It should be played in elevators and dentists offices. The worst offense to my ears being "Who says you can't go home". And I'm from Jersey for christs Sake! As for Van Halen never got too into them. Always thought Ed was an amazing talent but his playing sounds emotionless. Lot of fun some of the roth era stuff.
I think it's a draw
both bands started out ok but then just got more and more watered down when there wasn't that much there to begin with.

That being said, I think everything Bon Jovi have done over the past ten years is total garbage. It's soccor mom music. It should be played in elevators and dentists offices.

That's how I feel about them.

Of course in highschool (back in the late 80's  :o) Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, was the shit, hands down. I had liked some of their work prior to that, but knew little about the band (it wasn't like you could get online in those days, you would just go by what you saw on Friday Night Videos, rare newspaper articles and HS rumors.) Their follow up album was great, and was in our collection of music we drove around and listened to-it was very well received.

Nothing since then (New Jersey?) has been very inspiring to me. It came across as something you hear while waiting for your teeth to get drilled on. While I do not deny their talent, and am sure some of their tunes are very "poppy" and catchy, they haven't done a thing for me since about 1989.

Bon Jovi sucks. Heres the thing. They recorded runaway to get all big with the middle school girls back in the day. Then they recorded one more song sped it up and slowed it down and played it acoustic both ways. That song has since been featured on every record they made, on every track.

In 2004 Jon Bon Jovi's songwriting was professionally reviewed in a contest. He lost to a chimp. Later that month he criticized the chimp publicly saying "That motherfucker hasnt done shit in 5 years? Ive done so much, I should be god". Since nobody really gives a shit about bon jovi, that was printed in the Bon Jovi press.

next thing youll see is john wearing braids and richie sambora will have a fucking top hat on. Bunch of posers

No, i take them for what they are.

A commercial popular audience orientated Rock band. Who just happen to write songs that i enjoy.

Avenged Sevenfold pretend to be this amazing metal band that think they are the next Guns N Roses.

They have the cheesiest tackiest of songs. N the guitar solos are wankfucks with no emotion in them.

Plus the rythym guitarist looks a total dickhead with his emo imagery and geek clothing. Plus his name is more ridiculous than "Rikki Rockett"

No they dont.

City of Evil is a pile of cheese ridden trash. The chorus;s are so gay and so weak they make Def Leppards chorus's sound like Slayer.  N all that silly acoustic crap half way through god knows how many minutes long songs is just pathetic.

Their follow up self titled album is just so uninspired. The music is totally silly. Especially the second half of the disk with all the silly clown themes n stupidness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZqxl57PeL8 poor mans "November Rain" with bad singing.

REALLY lame song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhCXkRDPuIc poor mans "Wanted Dead or Alive"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiF9HswNMSg "we are about to rock. oh but whats this chorus, well we thought we'd just gay it up for you"

His voice is disgustingly bad. The guitar solos are mindless shreddery, its not even good shredding. It makes Kerry Kings guitar solos sound interesting.  At least he can make damn good riffs up though.

Seriously, this is no joke, on Nickelback albums id go as far to say even they have heavier riffs than Avenged Shittenfold do.

A7X are one of the tamest, lamest poser rock/metal bands to come out this decade. Just another "we jumped on the screamo bandwagon then when everyone started ditching the screaming so did we".

Bland. Boring.

Honestly id rather listen to Bullet for My Valentine than those guys. BMFV while not really a band i listen to, at least have good riffs n guitar solos without naff chorus's.

While my level of Bon Jovi love doesn't rise to the heights of yours, I tend to agree that such comparisons are faulty.  I don't like a lot of what they've released lately, but the old stuff is still good, I like it, I've seen them put on a good show...nuff said.

I find it actually hilarious, that Bon Jovi are the 2nd most talked about band on here.

They must be doing something right.

that's because most people find it's kinda funny to bash em, just like the amy whinehouse thread has more pages then the foo fighters thread
Amy Winehouse is a tart.

and the foo fighters aint really that interesting.

so i spose it is more fun to talk about her retarded antics then Dave Grohls dodgy beard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiF9HswNMSg "we are about to rock. oh but whats this chorus, well we thought we'd just gay it up for you"

  Nice.  I remember when I first heard of them, and I listened to that album and got to that chorus and thought "WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?!".  Yeah...super lame chorus.  It goes from respectably metal (though far from killer metal) to corporate pop with the flick of a switch.
Its just a very bad transition and a very bad move to make when you have a cool verse riff like that.

agreed with the shitty chorus...luckily the other 75 songs they have make up for 1 shitty chorus...and as far as being taken seriously..Mr Lee,arent you fan of Airbourne?? Airboure? Really?  I thought they were a parody band like Spinal Tap when I first heard them...Im still not sure what they are....and you give respect to Nickelback?  That right there says enough...

Every Bon Jovi album is good...some are great...but i wish they would get back to the "Slippery when wet"/"New Jersey" type of songwriting...NOT sound because its totally 80's but the songwriting...

Draw, both make pretty similar music.

Bon Jovi vs. Avenged Sevenfold.

Bon Jovi owns that whiny 90's band Pearl Jam

but Sevenfold owns both of them...

Yeah, in some fantasy world only you live in.
ok ok, not better than Bon Jove but  Pearl Jam is a pile of shit...always has been...always will be..I am still amazed that Guns N Roses fans listen to that nonsense...

Shut up you old geezer.

were you even born for half the stuff we are talking about came out? :hihi:

Another old guy thing to do.  Make everyone older than they really are so the old guy doesn't feel as old.

I'll come volunteer at your home.  I'll follow the president-elects' example and give back to the community.

Lol Airbourne shits over Avenged Sevenfold.

No bullshit. Just jeans t-shirt, long hair and rock n fuckin roll.

There live show is tons better than A7X. The energy is immense, Avenged Sevenfold are boring, especially the singer, what a cunt.

Bon Jovi vs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience

^I think there are few bands who would sound cooler/better/funnier if they were "The [lead singer's name] Experience".

The John Lennon Experience?

The James Hetfield Experience?

The Vince Neil Experience?

The Axl Rose Experience??

All awesome names.

So to answer the question, I'd probably have to go for Hendrix, but only because I own the 3 albums, while I have, like, 2 Bon Jovi songs :P. I like Hendrix's stuff, but I prefer Zeppelin, Sabbath, Stones etc. from that era.

Bon Jovi is so much better than some folks want to admit.  People don't give them enough credit.  They've listened to the songs they hear on the radio, and have never listened to anything else.  Jon Bon Jovi is a very talented singer/songwriter, AND he puts on one of the best shows around.  If you don't think so, you need to really go out and listen to some of the stuff he has written... the stuff that doesn't get released.  If you have done that, and still aren't impressed, then so be it.  I'll never understand ya, but to each his own.

To say they have sold out is insane.  I hate when people say that about any band who does something different.  I'm pretty sure that musicians that are able to withstand the test of time do so because they, like anyone who really likes music, have an appreciation for all musical genres, and if they want to experiment with some of those genres, I wouldn't call it selling out; I'd say, they are actually showing their versatility.  They just don't pretend to be something they aren't.  They aren't the same guys that had the lifestyles that produced Slippery, (thank God, because how sad would that be 20+ years later?), and while they can still sing the shit of it, they can turn around and do something different just as well.  If anything, a band that goes a different direction once in a while and manages to pull it off is just proving how good they really are.

Snake Sabo used to play in BJ!

He didn't play in the band.  He grew up near Jon, and Jon helped him and Skid Row get their start.
