For influence and overall impact? Van Halen (not Van Hagar, I mean just the real Van Halen). But for my own enjoyment, I prefer some classic Bon Jovi.

I'll go with BJ on this one. Every time I hear Eddie tapping, I feel like beating him over the head with his guitar. Tongue

Van Halen all the way - they invented hair metal, Bon Jovi were just using the template Van Halen had laid out

I agree. I think BJ (at least of the 80s) are a sort of pussafied Springsteen/Van Halen, mass produced for soccer moms and 12 year old girls.

That said, I got give Bon Jovi a lot of credit. Hats off to them for managing to survive grunge, post-grunge, nu-metal and now emo, and still be relevant, all over the world. They (Richie and Jon) put the band above all other petty bullshit and have consistently made the right career move.

While Van Halen survived grunge and were successful well into the mid-90s, all the lead-singer bullshit really did them in. While BJ released new music and gained a new, younger audience these last few years, Ed and Al just sat at home and drank/smoked while VH passed into a Deep Purple/UFO level of 80s AOR nostalgia obscurity. Nice going guys.

That said, comparing VH with BJ is like comparing Chaplin with the three stooges.

David Lee Roth is one of the greatest frontmen in the history of rock. In his prime, he was the man. While his act can get old, when he's good, his wit, charm and charisma is unmatched.

Have you ever listened to Fair Warning btw?

I prefer Bon Jovi... Van Halen is soooo  cheesy. Although I like some of their songs, and EVH is a genious

Bon Jovi is cheesy too, but they have lots of good songs and managed to reinvent themselves.. Off course, nowadays they suck.. But up until These Days their albums were great

Van Halen could never even dream of making a song like Dry County

Bon Jovi are far superior to Van Halen.

Jon Is a much more talented frontman than DLR are u kidding me?

Roth was a clown with his gay outfits and stupid karate kickin shit but Jon Destroys his audiences with his performances.

Jon is a far better musician and singer than Roth.

Richie is underrated as a guitar player and isnt too far behind EVH.

BJ have more hits, more album sales and overall better songs.
