 Cry

"Drip, drip from a dream dragon" - I love that line from his solo album.? Piper at the Gates.. and a Saucerful of Secrets are two fantastic albums and without Syd that wonderful band just wouldn't be known.? He had such an incredible imagination.? I wish he was here! Embarrassed

He dies a day after I purchase my first Floyd album.? no

Rest In Peace

Just Say No

What did he die of?? I heard complications from schizophrenia?

Diabetes complications as far as it's been released.

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

That is really sad.

It was foolish, but I always hoped he'd somehow make some sort of return to the music scene, and do one last album or something.

Not really sure or not if you're into bootlegs or such, but there's a yahoo group for Syd that compiled a 17 disc set of rare and unreleased stuff he did his last few years before dissappearing.? It has outakes from his first two solo albums, some super rare Floyd stuff and his third unreleased album in it.? If you can track that down it's good stuff.? They'll trade it to you from what I hear.? I downloaded a few things off of it, but I've yet to get the whole thing.

Cool, thanks for telling me about it.  Do you know if there's a name for the compilation or anything like that?  I do have an unofficial four cd box set of Syd's, but so far most of the material seems to be off Madcap, Barret, or Opel.

R.I.P. Syd

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the cross fire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger,
you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far
Shine on you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
and sail on the steel breeze
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

RIP Syd.

Fuck drugs.

Cheers Sid. I remember hearing Arnold Layne for the first time when I was a student, then someone lent me Dark Side of the Moon and I realised Radiohead were a bunch of introverted students mucking about with casios in comparison to the Floyd.

But RESPECT drugs

Actually Syd isn't in that video. The one in the black hat is Rick Wright (keyboardist, also a very underrated musician), and the one with the guitar is David Gilmour. Syd did write and sing the song though.

I believe the compliation asked about earlier is called "Have You Got It Yet?", or atleast it's similar.

This is a great old Floyd clip which includes an interview with Barrett and Waters at the end.  The host is an absolute arsehole but that just made the clip more interesting for me.  They keep their cool really well throughout. yes

Also I keep coming back to this clip of Graham Coxen singing Love You.  This is top class!

on BLAB, ALICE COOPER REMEMBERS SYD!!!

You might not think that the king of shock rock and Syd Barrett had much in common, but that's not the case. When the ALICE COOPER band was still making their name in Los Angeles in the late '60s, they were the house band at the Cheetah Club, where they met the original members of PINK FLOYD, who were in town to play a couple of shows there. In fact, the FLOYD guys ran out of money and moved into the house where Alice and his bandmates lived, and the two groups hung out a lot.

Cooper told TheRockRadio.com that he and Barrett shared "a moment" of sorts one day over breakfast. "Syd was sitting there at the table, and the box of cereal was between us," he said. "And he was watching the box of cereal the way that I would watch 'Star Trek' on television. He was seeing something I wasn't seeing. I don't know what he was on, but he could have sat there all day, staring into that cereal, and he would have been just as happy as anybody else."

Cooper also told TheRockRadio.com that he knew something was really wrong with Barrett at one of the gigs: "I remember the one night ? and in fact, I mentioned this to (PINK FLOYD singer-bassist) Roger Waters, and he says, 'That was the night we knew Syd was in a lot of trouble mentally' ? during their first song, he hits a chord, and he gets a shock, and then he just stops playing. The rest of the set, he just stands there and stares, for about an hour-and-a-half. Never played another note ? just stood there and stared. And the band just played."
