I have to admitt I like the entire album, I think alotof new gnr fans only aren't opening their minds to new music and it's spoiling their judgement because they're comparing everything to old guns, or the few boots they've heard///

Sorry, but I really tried to open my mind(listened many times). The only thing that I can tell you that I opened my mind for Audioslave after the first listen, and then I appreciate many songs. It's like when I was reading different reviews of Ain't Life Grand , but after listening, I liked a lot that album. I think that the rockers on ALG have more driving force. The only ballad (Back to the Moment) is also a great song, maybe many people compared Rod with Axl, but I didn't.  And symplifying, if somebody offered me to give one CD after the first listen, Audioslave or Ain't Life Grand vs Contraband, I would pick one of the first two.  peace

sometimes i wonder if they tried to hard to not sound like gnr and stp

u know

i wonder if slash played something and thought "thats to GNR" so maybe he held back in spots

same with scott i wonder if he sung or wrote some stuff and was like "thats to stp"

i do love dirty little thing though

the album is solid, not sure ill still be listening to it next year at this time, but for the moment its pretty good

overall its 3 stars out of 5, its good, not great, not excellent, its good, but i know they can do better on album number 2 after they've jelled some

I agree, D. Scott said that they left out the tracks that sounded too GNR or STPish - there were probably some great songs that they left out. Sad But at least it lessens their chances of getting shit on for trying to sound like GNR or STP.

Also, Scott said that with STP, if everyone didn't like the songs, they included them anyway, but that it's going to be different with this band and if they didn't all agree then they wouldn't do it. I say don't listen to Slash(!), as he didn't like Sweet Child, which became one of their biggest songs ever. He even said so himself: "That just shows how much I know," or whatever he said...  Grin

very true kiedis

i only liked about 8 songs off of rhcp "by the way" cd for a few months and now i think its one of the 5 best cds ive ever heard
so the more i listen im sure the better contraband will become

however the lyrics on the by the way cd made it easy for me to relate to that

i cant really relate my  life to what scott sings about which is why i think im having a hard time getting fully connected with this disc

I think dirty little thing is a great song, nice solo by slash.. I think the more you listen the more you'll enjoy the album, Inotice it took me a few goarounds to soak in the music and hear stuff I missed

I agree! I think the reason it grew on my after the 2nd day is because it sounds like GN'R and AFD only grew on me the 2nd day also.

My favorite rocker on the album!!!

Song by song review:

1. Sucker Train Blues

Great opening track, great intro. Chorus stuck in my head after hearing the song for the first time. 8/10

2. Do it for the Kids

One of my favourites, I love the chorus. 8/10

3. Big Machine

This one took a while to get into. It?s ok, defends its place on the album. 7/10

4. Illegal I Song

Great song, especially Matt shines on this one. Scott does a great job too. 8/10

5. Spectacle

IMO this is the song they should have dropped from the album. Kinda like a remake of Do it for the Kids (the choruses are too similar). Slash?s solo is excellent but couldn?t save the song. 5/10

6. Fall to Pieces

This song is well placed, it comes just when you?ve had enough of rockers for a while. Chorus is a bit dull, but I love the verses (nice melody by Scott) 7/10

7. Headspace

This is the best track, or at least the best rocker, on Contraband. Fucking excellent. The chorus riff sounds like a rocked-out Soundgarden riff (not bad association). The weirdest thing on this song is that c-part after the actual chorus ("living, taking chances..."): every time I hear that part, it reminds me of Linkin? Park! I hate Linkin?Park, but while Chester Bennington would?ve shouted his way through this part (like he always does in the choruses...zzz...), Scott shows his talent and sings the part with true beauty.

Should be a single. 10/10

8. Superhuman

Another one of my favourites. Scott does a fine job on this one as well, except for the "rodeo, rodeo, rodeo" part. Interesting guitar work. 9/10

9. Set Me Free

Excellent, one of the best rockers. 9/10

10. You Got No Right

IMO the best moment on Contraband. Sends shivers down my spine. 10/10

11. Slither

Great song, especially the intro sounds excellent. I still wonder why they released this as their first single. It?s a great song, but not in my top three. 8/10

12. Dirty Little Thing

Didn?t excpect too much from this one, maybe because the Paris Hilton theme didn?t sound that great. I stand corrected, this song fucking rocks! One of the best rockers. 9/10

13. Loving the Alien

The third song on my top 3 (the others being Headspace and YGNR). Beautiful. I don?t know if it?s only my ears, but doesn?t the verse have a kind of country-vibe to it. I hate country music (apart from Johnny Cash) but I love the song. A great ending with Slash?s guitar fading out, EXCELLENT! 10/10

Oveall rating 8.5/10
