Title: Championship Manager
Post by: R4tfink on January 17, 2004, 02:14:57 PM
Ok people, i know there is a Championship Manager 4 thread somewhere in the duldrums of this section....

Lets forget about that because for the most part that game is shit, full of bugs and errors and is Slllllllllooooowwww!

This thread is about Championship Manager in general.....from the original Champ 10 year ago on the Commodore Amiga to the 01/02 season...with the classic setup!

I wanna get some tips...im pretty good at it but you can learn some handy tips from other people...

What i wanna know and discuss: -

Best Tactics - I use the 4-1-3-2 option but i find it leaks too many goals.

Best Players- When i play as Forest(which is quite a lot) Prutton and Williams are exceptional talents and after a few seasons the bids start rolling in for these two youngsters.

Training - Usually i set my squad as follows....Midfielders - Skill, Defenders - Tactics, Attackers - Shooting.
Am i doing something wrong there?

Wheeling and Dealing - Whos the best player that you have ever purchased? Mine has to be Aliadiere from Arsenal for free as he was out of contract...just sold him 2 years later for 14.75 million.

Good Youngsters - We all know the future of football lies in the youth, know any goond youngsters, there normally cheap but given a year or two will prosper!

Let me know you Champ addicts!

Excellent thread!

I'm glad i'm not the only person who found CM4 like that, it was unbelivably slow, i only played it the day i got it...in several hours of playing it i was no more than 2 weeks into the game.......

Whats the update like (03/04) i would buy it but first i need to know its fast and not full of fuckin bugs!

I downloaded a demo from www.sigames.com (http://www.sigames.com) earlier which is the official site and its rubbish, exactly the same as CM4 but without the most prominent bugs slow as hell but with new bugs.

Dont bother, if you have broadband go to kazaa and download a copy of CM01/02 its the best one in the series easily!

If not then buy it, its like 10 quid if you pick it up second hand!

Some good news though Eidos and Sigames are parting company so we may see a return to the old format and quicker games!

I also use the 4-1-3-2 on the 01/02 season.

The best team I have ever had would be......

GK - Friedel

DL - Svend Agnus (QPR)
DR - Clarke Carlise
DC - Henning Berg
DC - Matt Elliot

DMC - Ronnie Wallwork (man U)

AML - Justin Walker (Lincoln)
AMC - Richard Langely (QPR)
AMR - Phil Mulryne (norwich)

Leroy Griffins (Qpr)
Doudou (Qpr)

Just try putting that midfield together, trust me you will have the best midfield in the league. Walker will get more goals and assists than he plays games, amazing player....if you play him right.

Its the fact its so slooooow that pisses me off most,

bugs can be fixed with patches but the fact that u just sit there waiting for it to load no matter how fast ur cpu is that really gets me!

Why oh why they thought a game that took a billion hours per season would sell is beyond me...and why haven't they corrected it......

It seems im the only one here who believes both 3 and 4 suck, i love the classic Championship Manager 2 97/98, classic game, my formation of choice always 5-3-2 attacking, players of choice John Curtis who is class on this game and if im in a lower league than the premiership division great players like Ronnie Wallwork are available on a free from the start

I think 3 rules and 4 is utter bollox...

I havent had any problems with 01/02 at all.

The only problem is i cant update it with the patches released to update the players and any bugs as i downloaded it from Kazaa...

I will probably buy it just so i can update if with the new player stats and most up to date transfers etc...as i relaly cant  be bothered to do it all myself with editors and stuff.

Takes fucking ages.

Ill take your word for it but seeing as your drunk and will regret that comment in the morning ill forget about it!

I will probably one day take the time to type it into kazaa and download it if i can be bothered. Other than that i wont.

Just started playing CM93, the second game...the first game with real players however...how beautifully nostalgic.

Yeah but its still UNBELIEVABLY SLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW isn't it? That was my main problem with CM4, bugs can be fixed with patches...but when it takes a month in real life to play 1 month in the game u know things have gone badly wrong.....

Excellent. I'm also a diehard-fan of cm 97/98. Agrees that Curtis is a classy player in game. The funniest in cm 97/98 is to wait for Papin, Blanc, Baggio, Southall and all the other old men star's reincarnation.

Does anyone know where I can get a good, up-to-date player update for CM 01/02? The newest one I've found has stats from the 02/03 season...

Maybe someone with CM4 can help....

I have two players in my squad (two best) who have serious problems with fitness.......play a game, unfit for next game. I've tried to adjust their game tactics, as I thought they were doing too much, and I've tried bringing them off as subs every game, but it doesn't help. Is there a way of putting them on their own training schelde? I've tried loads of times, but when I create my own, the whole team will go on it. It seems to lack a bit, this game, for building players up.

Am I missing something? Can you set single training sessions? I'd be very disappointed to find out I couldn't. How do you train younger players?

Its a error in the game - their invisible 'natural fitness' stat has been set super low by the developers simply to annoy people - just sell those players or get the editor and fix the stat

CM4 is shite but that error was also present in previous games

It's still amazing.  After all these years i am still playin' CM2 97/98 it's still far and away my fave without a doubt.  The only downside is obviously it's outdated, what with the Cup Winners Cup, Transfer System, Players etc.  Now i don't want anything to do with the new games, there is a lot to be said for simplicity.  As far as i am concerned this has the right balance of everything.  You can keep things going at a good pace and do the things you want to do as manager, i have no desire to talk to the press or do all the little crappy extras.  So, well, my point is this, well question.  Is there an up-to-date version of this game, or a newer copy, surely someone must of taken CM2 97/98 and updated everything and put it on the net right?

I remember the Data Editor on it i used years ago to update it, took me ages then my computer went bust, i was gutted, but now there are other things that need changing that i am not able to do through the editor or i just don't know how, plus updating ALL the players is an extremely time consuming process, help would be much appreciated : ok:

Dude! What the fuck? Problem with this game is that you have to be Claudio Ranieri to play it. Tinkering is key!
You have to play to your teams strength. Which means individually. So if you have players who cant dribble. Dont let them dribble!
More than ever, you have to scout the opposition to see how they play and to exploit holes in their tactics.
Its a fucking chore and a half and its one of the reasons that i play CM02 still. Because it takes so fucking long and the AI on FM series is more intelligent than any fucker could ever dream of.

If you play FM properly. It could take you weeks or months to play or season properly and get good results. I suppose thats the addiction of it. Im just lazy. I like CM02 cus you can play a season in a couple of hours, using one tactic and fit players around that tactic and normally kick ass. A little unrealistic but i like to think that i am Brian Clough and take Average players, play a tactic and get good results with them.
Plus, when i used to play FM i found that my eyes would pop out due to glaring at a tactics screen for hours making the most of my players attributes and covering their flaws.

You cunt!

I was worried that would be the case.

What would be handy is you sending me the link for 01/02 like you promised, you fuckin' gimp!

I won the Champions League with Steaua Bucharest at FM07.  My usual tactic was a 4-5-1, with 2 def midfielders, 2 wingers, one attacking midfielder and a striker.

It sucks man (or I do). I managed to get West Ham relegated. I'm now like, 14th in the championship.

I just signed Healy, he will play up front with Anelka, and get me back in the prem.

Having balazed my way through each version of Championship manager (i managed 45 consecutive wins with Barcelona with the 01/02 version - the run ending in a 7-3 thrashing in the CL final - d'oh!) I was really keen to see what Football Manger would offer

I've bought each version - and hated them all. Bugged to hell (i won every group game and yet didnt qualify for the champions league second round..) and the later offerings where impossibly hard - relegated with Villareal....

I wont bother with either FM or CM untill they actually get the game sorted - it shouldnt matter what tactics I choose, if i play as Chelsea I should, at the worst, finish top 4, and certainly not be relegated....

there was a beauty to earlier offerings where u chose a tactic and then never had to think about changing it...

and what the hell is wrong with Football Manager's training system - doesnt matter what i try the players decline...

I'm kicking ass at it now. Won the championship, and am going to terrorize every defence next season.

Healy scored the goal that won the league. He's fucking beautiful.

I bought Freddy Adu and a wee fella Kosstadinov (hearts). Amazing players, but have lost them because the game refuses to let me re-sign non EU players. It makes no sense. Perhaps it's because I'm a championship team, or was. I played Kosstadinov 44 times last season, he was my main striker, and now I've lost him.
