hmmm, there seems to be 2 types of quotes in the original post.

One group is just slamming the record for no good reason other than their apparent dislike for the band-members...   The comparison to electronica music is ridiculous.

The other group is  bummed because it doesnt sound like classic Guns blues-style rock.   I can understand that in some ways, but as has been said before, VR is not old-GNR, so there's no point in expecting that.  However, I wonder how much control Weiland has over this band.

--
EDIT:  Alright, I just listened to You Got No Right again, and each time I listen, it just increases my excitement for this album!  It sounds like Slash to me, and I think Weiland sounds great in that song.

Some songs will probably sound less 'Slash'-y than others, but based on other quotes we've read about the songs on Contraband (Booker's thread), I think it will be great.  yes

Im pretty sure its gonna be a good record, its not gonna be a fiasco. There will be solos, the only thing that worries me a bit is the "too STP sound" cuz even though I like some of STP stuff its not what I want from Duff and Slash.
Anyway we are just a couple of weeks away to find out.  ok

Nope.  Over there they try to make up bullshit while sounding as literate and "in the know" as possible.

"Sounds like STP", they say....Scott himself stated that Slither had an STP feel signaling out only that song as opposed to stating that the whole album had an STP feel.

A dramatic statement drawing from a recent major letdown for Metallica fans who were given an album with no solos.

Another dramatic statement by saying Slash's guitar playing lacks his trademark bluesy feeling......which would be a dramatic letdown for Slash fans.

Bunch of drama queens if you ask me.

Looks like some people at the Velvetrope.com forum have heard Contraband.

Here are some quotes:

I've heard the album. My biggest complaint is that it feels like Slash is trying to play 'modern rock'. The tunes don't have a trace of the blues-based rock that GnR was built on. It sounds like he's trying to write STP riffs. No guitar solos either. They are strangely absent from most of the songs. Still curious to see how it does.

--

it sounds like an stp record...thats fine..i like stp.

--

I will agree wholeheartedly that Slash has left the blues at home for this outing. If I didn't already know, there's no way I'd have known that was him on the CD.

It's nice to see a guy be able to handle more than one style, but Slash needs to sound like Slash in order to be Slash, knowutimean? Otherwise, he just sounds like a hired gun.

Scott sounds like he's trying way too hard to come off like he's not trying (you know, that whole world-weary, jaded rock star trip) and he ends up sounding like he sang all his vocal parts slumped in a chair in the studio lounge.

Thus, the end result, to my ears, lacks honesty. Like when the Scorpions made that electronica album (Eye II Eye, produced by Peter "We Built Ths City" Wolf, no less) a few years back. Normally, fans can smell that kinda tomfoolery a mile away (I'll give 'em credit for that), as Jane's Addiction quickly learned. sure, it's nice being modern and edgy, but when you have millions of fans out there who love you for what you are, going out of your way to make them go "eh" just doesn't seem like a smart move.

Of course, sight unseen, "Slither" doesn't suck any harder than anything else getting spins in the modern rock arena.

I will also add, again, that Matt Sorum is a wooden-ass drummer with two lead feet, if ever there was one. That he has been allowed to continually suck the groove out of both The Cult and Guns & Roses amazes me.

--

this is not a good record. it's passable modern rock, which sounds like some dudes trying to ape stp. you can hear slash playing in there, but he isn't really on board like he should be because the music they have written doesn't call for slash's signature blues/rock style (and mastery). this record is like the equivalent of a fuel/saliva/sponge-type of record. sounds good, but really isn't.

--------

/jarmo

Sorry Jarmo, but this is obviously all bullshit. There have been numerous interviews and reviews staing otherwise to nearly everyhthing stated above, especially with regards to solos.

Hell, even Douglas Green said there's solos on every song and he recorded the album. I think I'd believe him over some nobody posting at velvetrope

Heres Douglas' exact quote

"Well like I said before I think Slash is playing better then ever. And he gets to play a lot on this record. There are solos on every song and that's great. You don't hold a card as good as Slash and not play him." - Douglas Grean

Odd that he would mention thats theres solos on every song when theres solos on none, or even less then half... Huh

Quote
No guitar solos either. They are strangely absent from most of the songs
