Post your favorite art pieces/ your own artwork.

One of my favorites: Monet - Impression Sunrise

Tai: Do you think she's pretty?
Cher: No, she's a full-on Monet.
Tai: What's a monet?
Cher: It's like a painting, see? From far away, it's OK, but up close, it's a big old mess.

i like deLacroix. the alley of ' big format french painter" in Le louvre is amazing ... i know it's "too much" , but the beauty and precision and power of photo reaslitic HUGE paintings kills me.

and the " Le Sacre de Napoleon "? - has the most impressive painted fabric ever. i can stare for hours at the fabric of the robe of napoleon ....

i dont like art tho.

i love art. but not photorealistic art. everyone, mostly nonartists are totally flabbergasted in awe love of photorealistic stuff but i just think, what's the damn point? it's impressive, but so what? truthfully, anyone can learn to copy directly from a picture or life or whatever. it's not expression.. take a picture of it if it's that great.... i think art's about expression, not really documenting life straight as it is. not anymore anyway. maybe it used to be. i do like some modern art and expressionistic, like i think picasso and dali are fucking brilliant..
i'll prolly post some of my stuff later..
and possibly fueled by relentless art history studying for school, i really don't like renaissance, i'm more for modern art. but i can appreciate art in most of its forms. .......unless i think it's boring.

Monet's art is from pre-photography time. He wanted to capture the light from different times of the day.

A lot of people say impressionism lacks expression, because it's not defined. But I think Monet's work has feeling behind it. The spirit of the mood lies within the colors.

yeah i mean, you gotta appreciate what he did. i mean the renaissance was basically the birth of a new art era, you know, and i don't really consider monet or any other reniassance artists stuff photorealistic. i mean the paint strokes and the colors, and the overall vibe of them, you can tell they weren't meant to be like a painting equivalent of a photo. they had meaning behind them and represented something. and i'm a big fan of color usage.
but i think peole who spend earthlings amount of time trying to get their stuff to look exactly how it looks like in real life are insane. i know a lot of them because i go to an arts school. their stuff is amazing and all but it has no personality of feeling or anything, it's just straight from life. and i fucking hate paintings of blending  >:( brush strokes are beautiful.

I agree that it's more interesting when artists' paint from their imaginations, rather than from what's directly in front of them.

Picasso was taught academic art, which is based on painting gods, goddesses, and religious figures/themes. Yet he was brave enough to stray from the norm and create something totally original, which was, Cubism art.

Van Gogh's brush strokes are, in my opinion, the most brilliant ever.

You know, I personally have an affinity for many artists, many "styles/periods/genres" and many individual works. But not one single painting manages to evoke such an august sense of solace, of sublime wonderment, of somatically spiritual contentment and no-questions-asked compliance with the human condition as The Bride of the Wind by Oskar Kokoschka:

You know any time I really kick back and take in one of Vincent's later works (replete with his signature brush strokes) I feel like I'm being duped somehow.

We have for example in his landscapes what would normally be considered serene and even majestic settings. However these settings are portrayed in such a way that it's assaulting! And I'm not talking about the cliche description of his use of color! I'm talking about the underlying violence and sinister air that lurks in his paintings.

Take Olive Trees with Yellow Sky and Sun :

Just look at the trees! Picasso at his best couldn't create such distinctly indistinct monsters!

It's really something else...leaves me wide-eyed and shaking my head half the time. Which I suppose means the man managed to make an impression on me. And admittedly I love his painting. But for reasons I can't really articulate as I don't necessarily expect a certain something from a particular painting as I would with that of another painter.

Do you get the same?

Definitely

I think the aggressiveness in some of his paintings was inspired by personal frustration. Sunflowers, cypress trees and stars are in 3D motion, as if they're possessed. Maybe he meant to impose his aggression onto things that are considered beautiful and serene, by making them twisted and out of control.

Maybe he meant to impose his aggression onto things that are considered beautiful and serene, by making them twisted and out of control.

Well Van Gogh believed that Impressionism restricted the ability to express the emotion that he sought to convey. Hence he is sometimes called an Expressionist as expression of emotion was his main concern. So yes, he no doubt imposed his agression and more besides onto things that are considered beautiful and serene.

I mean as you pointed out his landscapes are in a constant state of motion. The environments he created were filled with movement as opposed to the architectural stability that the post-Impressionists sought. A testament to his agressive expression.

But what's odd in all this is that for Van Gogh, color, not form determined the expressive content of his paintings.

It is known for example that yellow meant faith or love to him while simplistic reds and greens stood for the terrible passions of Man.

Which of course is interesting here as we essentially have God shining down upon His snarly and imperfect creations that interestingly cast shadows representative of something more...divine.

But the way that it was created and presented by the artist is just a degree or two enough off center that things feel odd.

And I get this from even his early paintings, this underlying sinister air. So your bit about personal frustration (if you meant the mental illness that affected his ability to paint) wouldn't extend back that far.

And because we know that he took his life due to his increasing inability to paint (he felt that art alone made his life worth living), what are we left with? Disparity between a past faith and a present outlook? And if so, can that really account for the topic at hand?

I was referring to his frustration from lack of money and recognition. He was truly a starving artist. Although painting was his livelihood, he wasn't profiting from it financially. To my knowledge, he only sold one painting while he was living.

Here's a fine still life by Adolf Hitler. Yes, THE Adolf Hitler. Unfortunately, people were into mediocre dada instead of truly beautiful art and snubbed his art as old fashioned and out of style. Modern art like dada became very popular during and after WWI because the German national spirit was crushed and everyone was depressed. No one thought about flowers or nature's beauty. Hitler failed to inspire them with his art, where he probably would have been accepted just a generation ago. Discusted with their ignorance, he decided to go into politics to spread nationalism instead. You all know the rest of this story...

There's a lesson to be learned here. Modern art that values philosophy over aesthetics is destined for mediocrity. Not all modern art is like this, but the whole scene tends to reach this conclusion. If I wanted philosophy, I would read. Art should celebrate beauty.  It's sad that many people pretend to enjoy modern art to appear sophisticated, like listening to mediocre jazz over brilliant classical music. When too many people get into this "modern" worldview, they lose their values and tend to fall for philosophies such as Hitler's.

I enjoy art with an esoteric aesthetic, like Darkthrone; this kind of stuff is just noise to most people. However, it has a hidden beauty that's hard to notice at first. I despise art that's "kvlt" for the sake of kvltness, like 99% of black metal and modern art out there. There are a few gems out there, of course. Guernia is one of them.

Van Gogh and Bosch are excellent. Picasso is good, but incredibly overrated these days. The dada here is interesting, but it's not the same as the old masters' work.

Hi Walk, honestly I knew something about? Hitler's artistic past, but I never saw any of his pictures, in fact I never thought that some of them were available to be seen and apreciated. On the other hands, if you look at those Roses, " there is only one that looks above, the other ones, are looking down, and their colors are off, wich tell people something important, his sadness, loneliness, and low steem with pretentions of superiority, now I know you didnt ask to make a self interpretation of the picture, but I wanted to share something that in my opinion says a lot about hitler and what was his behavior.

He was just born at the right place at the wrong time. His art looks fine to me. In fact, it looks proud and powerful compared to the depressing dada art of the time. It was also very unpopular and this only made him angrier. It's interesting to compare the aesthetics of fascism to democracy (at least at the time). Look at films like Triumph of the Will: guess where that infamous scene with the 1000s of people lined up is also seen? Return of the Jedi!  :)

If anything, art is an important part of propaganda, which is something Hitler absolutely mastered. He knew exactly how to combine philosophy with aesthetics. Modern art often leans to philosophy too much, and reactionary art is all show and no soul. Both are important to a complete piece.

I know this is a controversial one, but it's nearly a given that Van Gogh, Picasso, Da Vinci, etc will be thought of in an art thread, so I thought it would be interesting introducing an unexpected element. If anything, it shows that art and politics usually don't mix (Bono, I'm looking right at you!).

And I get this from even his early paintings, this underlying sinister air. So your bit about personal frustration (if you meant the mental illness that affected his ability to paint) wouldn't extend back that far.

I was referring to his frustration from lack of money and recognition. He was truly a starving artist. Although painting was his livelihood, he wasn't profiting from it financially. To my knowledge, he only sold one painting while he was living.

I just can't see that accounting for it. There's something more...and I don't have a clue what it might be.

Iv'e always enjoyed dadaism

It's an interesting movement and "Nude..." is certainly an interesting picture.

A thought or three?

I enjoy art with an esoteric aesthetic

Esoteric?

Esoteric?

#1  a.  Intended for or understood by only a particular group: an esoteric cult. b.  Of or relating to that which is known by a restricted number of people.

#2 a. Confined to a small group: esoteric interests. b. Not publicly disclosed; confidential.

Populist art is almost always mediocre. Esoteric art that only a few people appreciate is usually better. Populist art has to appeal to the lowest common denominator, so to speak. That's why its themes are simple, like democracy, peace, love, celebrities, etc.

myself, I have a fondness for weird japanese art:

I once saw a magnificent painting at the LACMA museum of an Asian landscape.  The mountains and sky were huge, and the birds were drawn with great detail, but the people in the painting were just tiny dots.  I wish I remember the artist's name!

Here's an incredible Frazetta piece of art celebrating the power and history of the Northern European aesthetic.

This one's a Nordic woman, one of the beautiful race. Her beauty warms even the coldest forest of Scandinavia.

Conan, He Man, and tons of other modern characters are based on Frezetta's archetypes. He is a great artist for upholding traditional aesthetics in a modern, cynical age and preserving the values of Indo-Europeans in a time of crisis.

I was having a discussion earlier today about the various hidden symbols in Da Vinci's Last Supper. It's easier to explain if the painting's in front of you. From what I remember from art history, the three windows behind Jesus represent the Holy Trinity. Right above the middle window and Jesus, is a fixture on the wall similiar to a halo. Also, the way everyone is angled at the table forms an M shape, which is supposedly in referrence to Mary Magdalene.

It's very interesting.

Actually when you really look closely, all the apostles look either really keen on smelling it, or scared as fuck...

See the one way over on the left with his hands up? He's probably going "Hey! It wasn't me! Dont' fart in my face!!" to the guy bending over next to him... who is talking to the (fe)male next to Jesus... probably asking "What's it smell like?" and (s)he's saying in return "REEALLY BAD!!". The guy next to the (fe)male looks rather annoyed at having that guy bending over between them and he's probably saying "You shut up! You're sick you are!"

See!! You can really tell a story from it!

It's Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. The painting is titled "Forever 27", because they all passed away at 27 or at least around that age. I think Janis and Kurt were both 27 when they died.? Morrison and Hendrix were both 28.

i am not religious but im certainly fascinated with religious imagery, it has a mythical property about it...the painting is a masterpiece but people have a tendency to see shapes and meaning where meaning doesnt exist...take the M you mentioned...jesus and some disciples may be shaped like an M but i can see over 50 M's in the walls and the ceiling...or do you think that is also deliberate?

Possibly. I think back then if people had different opinions on religion or politics that deviated from the normal census, there would've been harsh consequences. So I think people found a way to express their own opinions and beliefs through hidden or encoded art, music and literature. It's all in theory. But there may be an element of truth to it.

Ashes and Snow

There's a very special exhibition that is currently touring the world and I wanted to share it with all of you.? The exhibition is called 'Ashes and Snow'.

I consider myself very fortunate to have experienced it while it was in Los Angeles in 2006.? I don't want to over-hype it, if that's even possible, so let me just say this is something truely special and I'll leave it at that.?

Here's the link to the official website for those of you who are interested.? Perhaps someone could even put up an image or two.

^^^? It's nice to see that someone here is familiar with this exhibit!

I'm not sure where you live, but from what I understand, this exhibition has no final destination and will continue to travel around the world.? Perhaps someday it will be closer to you.? At the moment, the show is currently scheduled to be in Tokyo from March 11th to June 24th, 2007.? I'm not sure where it's heading after that.

Although there's no substitute for actually being there, I believe you can still purchase a dvd that contains the imagery shown in the main room of the exhibit... and it's mind blowing.? I purchased a copy at their gift shop as I was leaving, but I think you can order them via their website as well.?

Again, there's no substitute for actually being there, but if you're unable to attend... the dvd alone will probably blow you away.?

Cheers,
W.R.

I haven't seen this picture before. I really like it. In my head it talks about liberation from loneliness..

Well, it was an overall feeling but since you're asking it may be a good opprtunity to analyse this feeling a bit.

So, for one thing, she is sitting sad in a room that seems to have been abandoned a long time ago. It's almost empty of furniture, moss seems to be growing on the walls and the wind is bringing in some autumn leaves. What puzzles me a bit is the carpet. It looks like a grass bed removed from a garden. I can't imagine what the painter was thinking.

So, she's sitting in this empty, ugly room and it's obvious to me she wants to get out. Her figure is the only coloured thing in the picture, painted in bright colours as well. As if saying, "I don't belong here". But she's probably not the decisive type who'll break what bothers her in a storm of rage. Her face is sad but her hands are patiently pulling the thread in a skein, and surprise!

She manages to liberate two small birds from the inside of a black figure standing near her, but one she refuses to establish eye contact with. This figure could be the dark side of herself, or the personification of her troubles that she's stoically dismantling.

I think that the fact that the birds are coloured red and white but their size being yet small, shows that she's going to be free soon, it's not the time yet, it takes a lot of effort but she's working on it.

To me it's representative of sex, of domestic entrapment and the duality of human existence in terms of our societal structures and basic passions and the fine and sometimes blurred lines between them.

First off, she is surrounded by the artificial. It's the fabricated world of man. And for this woman, with her stately posture, elegant garments and lavish home, it's obvious that she is required to conform to certain societal standards in order to possess and to maintain her lifestyle and all the bells and whistles that go along with it. However, due to her forlorn facial expression, it's blatantly evident that she's unhappy with her station, or, at the very least, with the pageantry involved. But she's trapped, a trophy to her husband I'm sure. So she sits back, defeated, her life taking her where it will, all written in the stars it seems. Yet she feels. And this grows over time, burns hotter, cuts deeper. The line between raw emotion and cold control becomes blurred. The room, a caricature of her life, is gradually being taken over by nature itself, which is an allegory to those basal emotions starting to seep in. But this won't create a breaking point, no. She is destined instead to continue on the path imposed upon her. For the thread she holds is a metaphor for her life, and one that draws on the mythological Fates (thread of life, destiny and all that) to show us her sad future. She is not pulling the string (pun intended), rather, she is the string. And it propels her forward into a narrow and dark alley, into the imposing shadow of the figure of a male, presumably her husband. You'll notice that the figure, while having a barely perceptible face, still comes off as angry. And everything from the face to the body posturing to her desensitized aura hints at tyranny. It's as if he's scolding her right there and she's indifferent, lost in her own world instead, coping. Which is basically what I think this is, an artistic articulation of a coping mechanism. A device we all employ to help us get through the lives we are handed.

Like the woman, we all get pushed in directions we would rather not take and to places we would rather not be. And in those times we all wish we were moving in the opposite direction, free as birds, flying our coops and riding the wild winds to the ends of the Earth, to our freedom.

Your approach was very intresting, one i don't wholly agree with but one I can't ignore either, especially that part with the string. There could be a connection with the Moirae, but a rather distant one, as the Fates represented the three stages of life(birth, evolvement, death) and their myth doesn't touch issues of liberation.

No matter what, I enjoyed your analysis, thanks!

It is simplistic physically, but I think it could also be an interpretation piece. It's ironic that the fish is placed near a large body of water, yet its confined to a small bowl. That could be a reflection of how people live their lives. The earth is huge, but we're confined to our own small space with our own problems, dreams, etc.  Or something like that. ha

Journey, you're very welcome and I'm glad (honored really) that you took the time to watch it.

As for the 'Goldfish in Glass' image, I find it very thought provoking. I love images like that.

For me, I see it as an almost humorous existential portrait. A portrait that could represent our lives, our struggle to find happiness & contentment within our lives, and a glimpse of what awaits us on the other side.

The site is london ( uk) based and here is what is said about the artist :

Andrew Gonzalez

"Primarily a figurative artist, my images explore the Sophianic (wisdom) mysteries of the body. And through the inspiration of Western and Eastern esoteric symbolic imagery, the figures are sublimated by transfigurative energies, exalted in glory and destiny, made transparent to the transcendent by the dramatic union of the sensual and celestial."
"I do not consider my work fantasy art or surrealist, and although influenced by romanticism, symbolism and idealism my work comes closer to the purpose of a Transpersonal Tantric art."

That's a beautiful and profound way of looking at it.

Just mixing some colours at the moment, trying to get a "honey" brown......(eye colour).....

If I mix blue and green together, what colour will I get?

On topic, I like this painting by Kandinsky:

I'm after the advice of artists who have experience in mixing paint.
