whoa there, what the fuck happened here.

I was under the impression that people are going on at nesquick becomes he keeps bringing the same subject up in multiple threads, and therefore getting on people's nerves - not because of his opinion. If he doesn't like it , fine, just don't go on about it every chance you get, in threads that often aren't even to do with that subject.

And before the back slapping, honesty, call a spade a spade bullshit goes any further. it was Nesquick who bashed some other guy in another thread, only today, for having an opinion - calling him biased/over enthusiastic, etc.

I don't want to make this about nesquick, but have an opinion, don't keep hammering down people's throats constantly, and appreciate that others have one too.

The difference was, Matt did a drum solo and Slash would do a solo and that would be it for the entire show. Not solo's, solo's and more solo's? hihi

Wrong.

They'd do a solo in between Double Talkin' Jive and Civil War (he usually did Voodoo Child then) as well as a solo where he usually played The Godfather.

Add to that the drum solo and Duff and Matt jamming with Slash joining in. Plus a longer piano solo by Axl.

Occasionally they even let the additional musicians solo (Move To The City on Live Era is a good example).

And since this has nothing to do with the September 16th show anymore, I suggest you take it to Dead Horse from now on.

I'm not interested in seeing this discussion turning up in every thread about a show.

I'm going to write a full review but his mic was not working during PC. so he left to try to fix it or something and then came back to finish the song...

i`d really like to know what caused axl to leave the stage during paradise city......  maybe he really wanted to play a longer set list....  which would`ve been cool         them dropping the robin solo would support that theory...

on another hand when he ran to scream at Merck, I grabbed my cell phone to check the time, I originally thought Merck was probably trying to shut the show down becuase of the time and Axl did seem like he had more songs for the encore...who knows, it was 1am and the Hard Rock probably wanted to shut shit down and get the crowd out to the tables before it was too late...guess we will find out soon enough, either way it was the BEST concert I have ever seen, EVER!? I am 40 and a vetern concert goer, I have seen everyone from A-Z including Guns back in the 80' and 90's,  I have seen people like Bob Marley, SRV, Pink Floyd...this show was fucking electric, in your face and just fucking so hard to really put in to words...it was worth the years of monitoring web boards and fan sites for any new info...pissed and frustrated with all the CD setbacks and the last cancelled tour, the it was the SHIT and worth all $175.00!

I hear ya, I lived in Henderson back in 1998 for 6 months...guess being from California and remembering back to the Old LA Forum shows when Guns went on at 11:30pm, ended around 2am, I remember they were fined for every minute after 11pm and it was pretty fucking expensive...so you are probably right, why the fuck would shit shutdown that early in Vegas? Either way it was amazing despite that hiccup at the end...it did'nt effect my concert experience, we all have seen Axl get pissed at so much shit it's really hard to know what might be going on at that exact moment unless you really see something and I didn't see shit and the vocals seemed fine...I was pretty buzzed...LOL...

For the record, Matt Sorum's solo's sucked ass, those drum solos lasted 5 minutes but felt like 2 hours.

I think it would be cool if all 3 guitarists did a trade off guitar type battle onstage or something

But a Keyboard solo, 3 guitar solos....... But this isnt just a diss on GNR, Im not a big fan of solos period regardless of the band. well unless its Tommy Lee's drum solos, now those are great.

Even Slash's solos during the show I most always fast forwarded.

Im just not a fan of them

The 20 minutes they spend doing solos, they could do 3 more songs.

Its just u had the awesome Godfather solo and then Dizzy would come in with the Piano and it kicked ass...... Then Axl would do the "Bad time" and Sail away Sweet Sister right into SCOM.. U can't beat that. Robin's solos before SCOM have been kinda bad in my opinion.

Live!! From Burning Hills, Wellington...

« Reply #689 on: September 19, 2006, 06:36:23 AM »

This whole solo thing is hilarious.

Don't people realise that during the UYI tour, solos made up an average of 15% of most shows, some more then 15%.

Even several shows from around 1988 had around 15% solos/jams (check out Phoenix '88 for example).

These figures don't include things like the bits of covers such as wild horses, which aren't songs, but I suppose they aren't solos either - these would increase the figure, (much like Bumblefoot's rendition of 'Don't Cry').

This year GNR have averaged about 19-20% solos/jams, including 'Beautiful', and 'Don't Cry' by Bumblefoot. In fact, if you don't count 'Don't Cry' which is a GN'R song anyway, that the crowd sing along to as if they were playing the song as a whole band, that figure drops to around 17%.

So... what the hell's all the whining about?

@#$%Funker

you and jarmo stating that the old GNR did it on UYI tour is irrelevant. Simply put, two wrongs don't make a right

The UYI tour, although amazing, had too much excess including the soloing

I for one, think they should play a tight, cohesive set - the majority of concert goers get bored and momentum is lost during solo spots

this is my review of the sept 16th show!

The North American Tour has begun to almost a perfect
start and it was even better than I expected.  The
road has been kind to Guns and they are having a lot
of fun up there on stage.
Axl came out with red sunglasses and a white t-shirt
that said something like Youth Assassin and he was on
fire, seemingly on a mission.  I?d say that Axl
sounded the best I?ve ever heard him at this first
warm up gig in Vegas.  Unlike in NYC, the sound
problems were mostly all fixed and I could hear him
very well throughout almost all the show.   Axl nailed
pretty much every high note, scream and nuance in the
songs, which was VERY impressive to me because it
seemed as though he had a cold (I saw him get Kleenex
during the show and he was drinking a lot more than
usual).

The first 3 songs really fire up the crowd and the
band so it?s hard to imagine them changing that
because it just works so well!  They actually had
smaller pyro going on during this show including the
spark shower for November Rain.  The stage didn?t have
the Video screens in the back or the Chinese banners
though because the club was so small.

Every song was awesome and tonight I can?t recall any
big mistakes and that bodes very well for the rest of
the tour.
Better was really powerful and tonight I could hear
the little intro vocals pretty well.  The Blues was
the best version I?ve heard so far ? Axl really nailed
the vocals throughout and he stood on top of the piano
at the end which was awesome.  You Could be Mine was
another powerhouse which they really played well. I
think it could be cool if they opened with it but I
don?t think that would happen either.  November Rain
is really epic now because I think all three solos are
played very well and of course the vocals are very
good.  Brain did some different fills during this
song, which were nice to hear.  I think that during
the band intros Axl mentioned that they were welcoming
him back and he made a joke about how he ditched the
European Tour.

Patience was also the best I?ve ever heard.  Axl held
the last note for a really long time.
Rocket Queen was a request from Tommy ? Axl said that
he really wanted to play it.  They then proceeded to
rip that song up and it was one of the best
performances of the night [Fortus played the slide
solo].  Nightrain kept the high energy up and once
again had a long jammed out outtro with many solos
from everyone.
For the encore we got Madagascar which was beautiful
but also missing something because there were no video
screens.  After this the energy spiked when they
launched into the intro to Paradise City.
Unfortunately Axl?s mic stopped working after the
first verse and he ran to the side to ?talk? to
whoever was in charge.  He definitely wasn?t too happy
about this!  After the song was done and after all the
explosions and confetti flew in the air they quickly
left the stage.  After a little while they came out to
a loud ovation (well deserved) and a group bow.  I was
reeling. Even though I?ve seen the songs before it?s
still a shock to see this kind of spectacle at a rock
show; there?s nothing like it.

After the European tour, GNR is now much tighter than
they were earlier this year, they have great chemistry
and Bumblefoot (wearing a cool looking completely red
suit that night) is becoming much more incorporated
into the band.
For example, he?s now doing longer solos for Knockin?
on Heaven?s Door (although I think for this one he
should play it closer to the album version).

I think they could do without so many guitar solos
personally ? if I had a choice I?d cut out 2 or 3 of
them because it takes some energy away from the show.
Although I must say that it was nice to see that some
of them were different than back in May.  I also think
they should ditch Beautiful and do some other songs,
kind of rotate them around.  I usually don?t like
Robin?s solos that much but now they are shorter and
more creative, so I was glad to see that.  Bumblefoot
sometimes does these crazy tapping solos, which I am
not a big fan of ? I think that he does better playing
the bluesy type of solos.  However his Don?t Cry solo
is really well arranged and he nails it.  It got some
of the crowd singing along after they recognized it.
He is a great and energetic stage presence that?s for
sure.  Richard?s solos are probably my favorite, the
most bluesy of the bunch.  He has really impressed me
so far this year!!  I also was digging Dizzy?s solo
which was Ziggy Stardust.   Besides the guitar and
piano solos I think that the little interlude jams are
pretty sweet because they are all improv.  Sometimes
Axl joins in with some vocal melodies, whistling or
shakers.

Tonight?s show was so good that I think it is the best
overall I?ve seen them play, and I think they only
will get better with more touring!!
There really is nothing like seeing this band in a
small venue.  The energy and crowd interaction is
unmatched and you can really feel the band?s intensity
and in some cases their sweat. Of course there is the
always-fun moshers and crowd surfers, which oddly
enough weren?t near me!  The next night however was a
different story....

Some other bits that I remembered from throughout the
show:

I think during You Could be Mine, Axl even did a jump
from the drum riser to the stage (but not quite like
those epic jumps he used to do).

He was in a great mood and thanked us for coming out a
few times and mentioned that we were in a quiet little
city in the desert.

At one point during the show Axl?s mic stand hit the
drum kit and they were laughing about it.  The stage
is so small that people were running into each other
pretty often ? kind of funny.

I believe after November Rain, Axl went into the Elvis
voice and said ?Thank you very much!?

Robin fell down to the ground during Rocket Queen, and
that was kind of funny.

Axl told a story about Live and let Die: He found out
that Paul McCartney?s kids were telling him that it
was so cool that they covered a Guns n? Roses song.  I
loved it!!!

Also someone asked him about Sebastian Bach but Axl
replied that he wasn?t there today. He also talked
with a fan up in front but I don?t know what he was
talking about.
Some stupid people were throwing stuff and Axl
commented on that too asking them to ?be good.? Or
something to that effect instead of getting angry and
ranting.

I think the wrong question is being asked here.  It's not whether the solos disrupt the flow of the performance (which I sometimes think they do); the better question is are they needed and why.

I say yes, they are needed simply to give Axl a break from singing.  I'm not sure how many of you actually sing professionally, but to sing like Axl does for over 2 hours isn't easy.  There's no way anyone could sustain the level of stress that Axl puts on his vocal chords without taking a good break from time to time.  Look at every other band who's lead singer has the same range and intensity that Axl puts forth.  The two that come time mind are Led Zeppeline and AC/DC.  It's my impression that both these bands use some serious guitar/drum solos to give their respective singers some time to cool their vocal chords.  Without these breaks, most singers in that are akin to Axl's sound would blow their chords out half way through the show.

My vocal style is much like Axl's (one guess as to who I was influenced by) and singing along to a GNR cd, i can get through 6, maybe 7 songs before my vocals start to go and I need a break.

Cheers,

Andrew

Here?s and idea,

If Axl needs a break instead of so many solos?.when Izzy is there Let him sing a song or two like You aint the first, double talking Jive, or dust and bones. Izzy singin these songs accompanied by Axl in the back would be cool and Axl could take a breather at the same time.

I totally agree that a break is needed but one less solo wouldn't hurt right?  or maybe let Tommy sing a cover or something like that?

I dont see a problem with solos, I enjoyed everyone of them.  I want to hear what each member can do on their own as much as I want to here them play the songs.

You are at a concert for a musical experience.   yes

Umm, Izzy wasn't there and I also think people tend to forget this is a band and all members deserve the spotlight for a few mins or so.  Except drum solos, I think everyone can agree we don't need those but if they decided to play one I wouldn't be complaining.

Enjoy the band people, stop over-analyzing every last thing.  Be happy we have a tour happening here!

talking about.

commented on that too asking them to ?be good.? Or
something to that effect instead of getting angry and
ranting.

Top review mate! Really enjoyable reading! Glad you had a good time! Makes me kind of jealous to be mising these shows after the great summer we have had with the gigs in Europe! Makes me want more!! Mike
