http://www.voivod.com/

I was never a huge fan of this band, but it's sad to see this metal legend go. Now's a good time to give Nothingface another listen.

Lately, I've come to appreciate Voivod's album Dimension Hatross. It's similar to Nothingface, but the production is much warmer, and it is much less experimental. As a whole, Voivod's experimental albums are much better than their early, punky, thrashy albums. They use some really interesting, unorthodox chords, but they make them fit together somehow. This album is definitely what led up to Nothingface. I think it's a loose concept album, but I'll check out the lyrics later, since I'm trying to decipher the music's complexity so far. Wink

I hadn't really gotten into them until now because Voivod is notoriously inconsistent, but at the very least Nothingface and Dimension Hatross are worth hearing. Maybe I'll like the others some, too.

Interestingly, I think fans of old prog, like King Crimson, Yes, and Rush, would enjoy this a lot, probably much more than the typical thrasher. I think much of the criticism of Voivod comes from fans of their earlier, simpler work. Don't let these simians scare you away from some of the best experimental metal of the late 80's.

I've liked what I've heard of Voivod but they are just another band to put on the endless list of bands to get around to at some point.

I've read Piggy's story though, it's really sad but also reall cool that he made so much effort to get the last album out.  That gives it real meaning.  It's really sad that someone who is talented and even fairly popular in rock terms gets NO coverage for this, yet some trash like Arctic Monkeys get splashed all over the papers.  Or they'll do story after story on that tard from The Libertines.  It was the same with Dimebag, it hardly got a mention yet it's one of the biggest music tragedies since Lennon.  The general public are deeply ignorant about rock and metal, it's frustrating.

Heh, Voivod weren't even highly praised back "in the day". They've always been a love or hate band. I think their whole attitude is very cyberpunkish, evoking Neuromancer and Snow Crash. But maybe I have too much of an imagination and associate weird sounds in weird songs with weird, random things. Wink

No one cared when I mentioned Richard Mills's death, but that's probably related to his controversial choice of lyrics. Ok, fine, he was a national socialist, but his music was worth hearing, in both Arghoslent and Grand Belial's Key. This kind of music is just too kvlt for the mainstream media. Actually, most music related deaths are only mentioned when it has to do with murder, suicide, or weird deaths (John Bonham and Michael Hutchence  rofl)
