Listen to the song Get Stoned by the Finnish band Stone. Sound familiar? Metallica are thieves and have always been thieves, period.  Angry

EDIT: They could have stolen it from Excel, too. Hmm... Wink

Well, Get Stoned isn't there, but you can hear some Stone songs to get an idea of how they were.

Get Stoned and Enter Sandman do have some similarities in their riffs, but to say that it's stolen is totally incorrect in my opinion.

Both bands were thrash, and Metallica was still active in the "true" thrash scene when Stone put out that song. The fact that the songs were released so close to each other, time wise, and the fact that the bands were similar is also evidence. It's kind of like how Kiss stole the Dictator's song The Minnesota Strip to make War Machine. Both bands are from New York, and the songs came out about the same time, and the same style, suggests a rip off.

If two similar songs are highly separated by genres, time, location, etc, then it could just be a coincidence. There is just too many similarities in the two examples I gave for it to just a coincidence, though. It's not just the opening riff of Get Stoned; it's also the second part of it, and the drumming as well.

And Madagascar shares the same bass riff as Stairway to Heaven but no one seems to care to much on that one Wink

Well the reverse to this of course is that they are fans of Metallica & thus
borrowed the chord progression.   http://www.rockdetector.com/officialbio,8588.sm

A Rip off  of course would be that stole the song & recorded it with out permission.
Another note the Chord progression & tone of Enter Sandman is also similar to Skid Rows song
Piece of me ,so it could be said that both groups got there idea from Rachel Bolan but again
It still would not be a complete Rip off cause of coarse we could than say they all bit off of Toni Iomi from Black Sabbath

How many times has Black Sabbath and the Devil's Third been used?  At some point, all the cool riffs will have been created, and then we'll have to bring in new instruments to make rock "new" again...like the accordion!

Up, I found another interesting one. Metallica apparently liked Darkthrone, too. More of a stretch, but interesting.
