Title: Best female voices ?
Post by: //JK75 on November 10, 2006, 12:59:45 AM
Hi, I love rock n' roll in general, but maybe my other passion in music is female voices... R&B, pop, rock whatever...
I just love some great voices... Here are a few of my favorites these days...

Joss Stone
Natalie Merchant - Ex 10000 Maniacs
Andrea Corr - The Corrs (of course)

can you recommend more ?

Anneke Von Giesbergen - The Gathering

Oh yes, her voice is just beauty refined to its finest. Marcela Bovio is a singer similar to Anneke, she's awesome as well.

Jennifer Warnes, who's worked and sang with Leonard Cohen, also has a personal and beautiful voice. You can for example hear her in Take This Waltz.

Yet, my favorite female vocalist has to be Yma Sumac, a.k.a. Voice of the Xtabay. The five octave Peruvian marvel just pwns everyone else so hard.

Jessicka Fodera, from the tiny l.a. band "scarling." has a great voice. It was probably more rockish when she was in her former band, "Jack off Jill" (Managed by one Doug Goldstein, you might remember him from somewhere.)

And Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane/Starship. She was great.

there's one thing to be a rock n' roll singer and a totally different thing to have a great voice. and courtney can't compare to some ladies that were named here. it's about the voice not the rock n' roll attitude. and nirvana has a lot to do with courtney because a lot of nirvana fans got into hole just because they released an album one week after kurt died  and they sounded like nirvana so that's why they were successfull.

Jewel... the best female voice alive.  Janis Joplin is also one of my favorites of all time.  Tori Amos as someone said is a great singer.  I like to take into account people that sing songs that they wrote themselves and that's another reason Jewel is top of the line.  She can rock with the best of them as well and she's pretty fucking hot.  I met her a few years back and she looked so perfect in person... she had a tiny blue sun dress on and she is so tiny herself.  I have a thing for tiny chicks no offense to you big girls out there.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Charlotte Church. She has some fucking pipes on her and she can party with the best of them.  I don't really get into her music at all but the girl can sing.  There are some fantastic female voices out there and you guys have done a pretty good job at bringing up some of the best.

Cristina Scabbia, yes ... I'm sorry I forgot her. For female metal singers, I'd throw in Nienke de Jong from Autumn. Also, Liv Kristine formerly from Theatre of Tragedy and now with Leaves' Eyes, which isn't to discredit Theatre's new singer Nell Sigland because I think "Storm" is one of their strongest albums. As for Nightwish, I prefer their new singer Anette Olzon and the direction they've been able to go in with her vocals.

Winehouse has a great voice indeed... I love her album. It's really sad she's allowing drama to dominate her life. She's a very talented woman who needs to learn about how to live her life without being dependant on men and circumstances. Her current situation actually raises an  interesting question (among others) I think : can you be a great artist without suffering and having flaws ?
