Title: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: Jim on September 17, 2004, 11:30:39 AM
I went to see these guys at the beginning of this year and they are incredible.

Their latest album (Waking the Fallen) is fucking amazing. I'd recommend Chapter Four, Unholy Confessions and Remenissions from it to almost anybody, and also probably Eternal Rest.

Warmess on the Soul, from their debut (Sounding the Seventh Trumpt, which also rules), is also a bad ass song.

They're edging away from any emo bands that may resemble them, and are quite a melodious hardcore band.  : ok:

Supposedly they're about to start recording their next album, so it's all good news there,

Anybody else a fan, or seen them live?

I got their latest album - and wasn't that impressed - bit too much screaming, its been done before and much better.

See, I heard of this band ages ago. But, it is it hardcore in the punk sense, or is it hardcore in the "Were a metal band, but we don't want to admit it" sense?

I get the impression that they would sound like FFAF or KSE, just by the fans they have. Ignorance is bliss.

they dont sound like punk to me at all.

they sound like a metal band. metal band with screamo vovals.

theres an article about them in one of the guitar mags i got, and the guitarist Synyster Gates gives me the impression that he's a cocky fag who thinks he's the greatest guitarist to walk the earth.

in the interview he passes judgement on a lot of guitar players. "jimmy page couldn't play his way out of a paper bag" "EVH was nothing special, that two fingered thing is so old" etc . Some of what he said may be true, but wat a damn criticial bastard considering nobody gives a fuck about synyster gates' riffs.

sorry he just really pissed me off.

Well, inbetween I would guess, but a lot of their stuff isn't really very punky.

They are nothing like FFAF, although I can see why I would think that you would think they are.

As I said, they're a far cry from bands that they may seem like, even if they share similar friends.

I would definatly not refer to them as an emo band.

Just been reading about them in the latest Kerrang mag.  3 of the members favourite albums are GN'R ones so they seem to be big fans and the article cites them as the most dangerous rock 'n' roll band since GN'R so im definately intrigued but i get the feeling Kerrang may be talking out of their arses...they seem to have a habit of doing that, anywayz i think i might download some of their stuff see what their like....anyone got anything positive to say about them?

Melodical, most definatly brutha.

I went to see them a couple of weeks actually. They were great. My only complaint is that they played a lot of new stuff...Now I like to hear new stuff, but when the majority of a set list is full of stuff you've never heard before? Not so much.

The new album is out tommorow, actually. Maybe it came out today here, actually? I've been revising all day.......

But yeah, they're great, check out pretty much anything from Waking the Fallen...Rock n' fucking roll. Kinda.

Edit the first: You can stream the new album over at the website, now
Edit the second: They filmed their new video at the gig I was at.  : ok:  Well, some of it at least....

i think the new album is amazing , at first its alittle weird because its alittle different from the past songs , but i have been listening to this new album and keeps getting better ,  Seize the Day , M.I.A ,Bat Country,Betrayed are pretty good songs .

and you can listen a lot of Guns in their songs , indeed their have to be fans of the band because the new album sounds alot like some of the UYI songs.

i was looking for a thread on them and couldnt find one.  They are sooo kick ass, i saw them on nov 18th, it was easily the best show ive ever seen.  in my opinion they are going to be the band that brings metal back to the main stream, i mean they are already on TRL which no metal or real rock band for that matter has been in a while, so they are on a damn good start.  i fucking love this band, they are amazing.  Synyster Gates is definatly my new favorite guitarist. peace

Metalcore is its own thing, I think. It's not really metal, or hardcore; it's both. It will have its own comminity, but I don't think it will have too much influence on the rest of metal. If it's too metallic, it becomes thrash.

I think Shadow's Fall is the best metalcore band out there today. A7X is a bit bland to me, but I can take small doses of them when I'm in a metalcore mood. And of course, metalcore is always much, much better live! It's energetic music designed to make heads band!

(but thrash is still better ;))

Has anyone heard this band?  I always assumed that they were just another of those crappy metalcore bands.  But I never even listened to them, until I happened to hear "Bat Country" a couple weeks ago.  That's a great song!  The music really harkens back to classic rock/metal a lot more than I would have expected, and the singer kind of reminds me of Mike Patton.  I also detect a sizable Guns N' Roses influence there.  "Beast and the Harlot" is an awesome song too - very Maiden-ish.

i love city of evil. fucking great album. i find myself listening from the second half onwards but. maybe the first 5 songs or so are yet to grow on me.

i hated avenged sevenfold earlier albums with a passion. sounding the seventh strumpet and waking the fallen. when i heard those albums i thought jeez this band could be so good if they actually wrote good songs and not shitty genereic metal core. now with the new album they've broken away from metalcore finally.

They made me laugh - I couldn't even get through 1 song when I listened to the CD at a store.  This is the kind of music you listen to to piss off your parents or go see live in concert b/c you like to mosh and crowd surf.  Pretty shitty music/band.

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold

You obviously don't like hardcore, or probably any punk for that matter. Metalcore combines metal riffs and melodies with hardcore breakdowns, vocals and energy. It's one of the best fusion genres out there. It's not thrash, so it's not fair to compare it to that. It's its own thing. Thrash, intrestingly, takes a lot of its style from punk.

May i just say, when i posted that, some idiot sent me a few songs over msn, from there previous albums which was screamo, i hate that stuff, but they told it was from the new album, so i thought  fuck that.

Luckily i heard "the beast and the harlotte" and was blown away, so i got the album and it was great, other than the lil weaky parts they put in for chorus's or something.

I bought the CD and I was impressed with the guitar and drum works. They have some real, real talanted players in the band. Their songs are pretty good. Could be in the emo grouping but I do not refer to them as that. Promising young band with a different feel to the modern day metal.

yeah, the whole "image" thing is just a distraction, i have a feeling they'll be ditching it soon.  still though, i can't think of any other bands out there in the mainstream that are trying to sound like true hard rock/metal besides avenged sevenfold.   Thats not to say there aren't, i just don't know who they are.

I agree.

I still think the band is bordering on becoming a true credible hard rock band, with songs like bat country or almost easy, and becoming something different. They could easily become a great band, like it says on the new issue of guitar world, or they could become a shitty band like dragon force.

I ended up downloading it anyway. In this article, which talks about the DVD version being encoded http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/upcoming_releases/avenged_sevenfold_interactive_dvd_album.html

It might end up being a pain to burn them to itunes, so I decided to download it, and then just get the album when it comes out, for the extras and to have it to listen to in the car.

'Almost Easy' is good, I've only listened to the first 4 tracks so far. Let me know what you think of the album after youve listened to it.

not doing much for me, the songs never really flow.

although i love the guitar solos, i just find the songs boring.

id much rather CRASHDIET of HCSS new albums over this, they certainly deserve more attention for there work, its tons better than avenged .

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: Wheres Izzy on October 21, 2007, 06:46:30 PM
New album isn't bad by any means, but it's probably their weakest effort so far, and it took me a long time to get past the vocals on some of their earlier stuff. City of Evil really blows this latest out of the water. Again not a horrible album but not very good either.

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: Robman? on October 21, 2007, 07:44:53 PM
After listening to the whole album, I'm kinda disappointed.

City of Evil had some boring songs, but it had some good songs with 'Bat Country' 'The beast and the harlot' 'Burn it down' and 'Seize the day.'

After hearing 'Almost Easy' I thought the whole album would be a bit more like it, good rock songs. Sadly, a lot of the songs are particularly boring, except for maybe Gunslinger. I suppose the band is trying not to be 'main stream' by having all these 8 minute long boring ass songs, but it comes off as amateurish.

Boring album, the sweep picking gets boring after a while, some of the vocals are kinda unimaginative. If they threw away the crappy boring songs, kept the good ones, and started over then it might have turned out all right. This is not a great rock album, just a few good singles maybe.

A7X is a pretty good band, but I really wish they would eliminate all their emo/screamo songs.  They have some really good hard rock songs with a touch of classic rock influences (like Axl's voice) but then they have some absolutley horrible songs.  For example I wont See you tonight, really great epic song, and then I wont see you tonight part 2, what the hell is that?!

i really could care less that they worked with crashdiet, just because i dont like Crashdiets' music I'm not going to immediately stop my self from enjoying another band because they're associated with them. I didn't like that band because they just seemed like one giant cliche to me, Everything about them seemed cheesy and fake. Thats not to say that Avenged Sevenfold isnt at certian times but i highly disagree that Gemini Five are a better band.

Operator covered it, they're pretty good, check 'em out on myspace  http://www.myspace.com/operatormusic

When Avenged came out, most of em were in costume.  M. Shadows was dressed like Rambo, Syn and Zachy were doctors covered in blood, and Johnny was Beetlejuice.

only 4 tracks in, but it def has a more mainstream sound - which isn't bad by any means.  Listening to Afterlife right now - good tune.  I think you'll have some regular sounding A7X songs with some more mainstream/arena rock/radio friendly tunes mixed in along with some "trying new stuff" songs.

i shouldn't say anything till I've listened a few times, but i felt like typing so....   :hihi:

ok, a few more songs into this...

what
the
fuck

Lost and A little piece of Heaven sound like fucking fall out boy  :hihi:

Lost has that Cher effect on the vocals and ALPoH (alpo? haha) sounds like god damn circus music.

very disappointing follow up effort.

these songs might grow on me with more listens, but I was hoping A7X would represent mainstream hard rock.  this is just trying too hard to be "different" - at least with these two songs... bummer  :-\

First five tracks or so are good, the last track is pretty good, everything else sucks.  :hihi:

quite a bit of filler, prevents it from being a really great rock album.

I wouldn't even call it filler though - its just such an odd sound for a hard rock band.  I like when bands try new stuff, but some of the later tracks are just so fucking bad and "Good Charlotte-ish".

Very disappointing - I don't know why they couldn't just make a total kick ass, hard rock, in your face album.  city of evil is so rocking from the first to last track - every song is good on that disc.

very disappointing, i've barely listened to it since i've bought it.

theyve never made a good enough album to warrant the fame they have created for themselves.

There vocalist is wank also.

The thing that made City of Evil so amazing was the guitar chords, tones, and a huge amount of soloing. The new album is rather bland guitar-wise. It's just big, really. There's a few very good songs on the album but overall it's a little disappointing.

Considering that I have been listening to rock music since before the Illusions came out...i would say that I know a thing or 2....I will go on record as saying the new Avenged Sevenfold album is the BEST hard rock album to come out in the last 15 years....It has it ALL....and is far more creative than any of the bullshit that has come out in recent years....also considering these guys are only 24-26 years old it is insane to think what kind of records they will be giving us the future...

Yeah I agree totally. And I loved City of Evil. I think it's one of the better albums of this century so far. The self titled is terrible tho. Where COE takes cues from Iron Maiden or The Misfits or even GnR this album seems to be influenced by good charlotte or fall out boy, which makes me not want to bother with A7X ever again. I was really looking forward to this album and was equally disappointed. I'll just keep listening to Waking The Fallen (which fucking rules) and use my copy of the self titled to prop something up.

wow - you 100% summed up my exact thoughts on this album.  perfect analysis.  the 2nd half of the album is straight out of the good charlotte play book.  really fucking lame.

i can maybe understand people liking it, but best album of the year? best of the last 15!??! hahah c'mon guys - thats just ridiculous.  if you want to listen to an amazing CD that you can't stop listening to from beginning to end, check out Down's latest album.

i'm not ready to give up on them yet, city of evil is just too good to think its the best they have to offer.  beast and the harlot is such a great song.  i with the self titled was more almost easy/critical affair and less lost and the clown music song.

i thought "a little piece of heaven"(the clown musid song) was the reason why the album was so great..it was completely out of left field and didnt sound anything like anything anyone else is doing.  All bands today follow the same (screaming verses/singing chorus) formula and it sounds like shit...other that or you have bands like Hinder who think they are modern day GNR but they are more like the other cookie cutter rock bands like Daughtry and Nickelback....  I love Pantera but Down is unlistenable....

New Down album is incredible. If you're stating that without hearing it I think you should check it out. If you have, well you have a right to your opinion. And I don't think A7X made the clown music song for artistic purposes or to be different. It sounds like it was because it's easily digestable "rock" for the same people who bought Justin Timberlake's albums. Guarentee it is eventually a single.

This A7X album got boring quickly, I listened for maybe a week then got bored, and I doubt I'll ever listen again. The band's attitude and the feel of the music is just embarrassing.

Lyrics suck? Those lyrics sum up the life of the members of Down over the past years and the tragic events with Dime and Hurricane Katrina. Bitching about song titles? They sound solid and tight as a band on the record.. We must have different speakers.  :hihi:

i don't own Down 2, just NoLa and Over the Under (down 3).  PLEASE do yourself a favor and check out the latest down - you can hear a few songs on their myspace and most of the album is on youtube too.

i really wanted to like A7X newest, but I just can't.  its painfully average (and thats being nice).  I'm all for bands trying new things and sounding different, but it still has to be good.  Most of A7X's "different" songs are just, well...  bad.

I literally can't stop listening to Down 3, every song is just amazing.

most people that hate crashdiet pre-judge them by image though, thats my issue.

avenged sevenfold are an established band, they have alot of fans and are making alot of money, i think its fine they have some criticism...

but, my post was just saying the new album is a waste of hard drive space, i downloaded it to give it a shot too as the singles were good from it.

Not just me dissappointed with this album either, if you look above at some previous posts. so chill cheapjon and lets leave you to review this album ;)

lee.. i know you downloaded it, i know you and other guys thought it sucked, i read it a month back.. i've read this thread even though i haven't downloaded it until tonight.. i don't care about what you guys think, i'm here to voice my unspoken opinion of the new selftitled album.. i've already read yours so no reason of coming back with your "new album sucks" comments (that goes out to all the haters of the new album : ok:)

this is for lee.. when you came back saying how the album sucked, i was joking with you, talkin' bout crashdiet.. you know i haven't pre-judged them, i like their first album, but the 5 songs i've heard of the new IMO suck.. (and those 5 are the songs you've sent me that you thought were the best on the record..) we have already talked abot this issue on msn so you don't have to come and take it here now :hihi:

i don't like talking about crashdiet or down in the a7x thread.. there's threads for all 3 bands, let's use 'em

lee, i'm sorry that you didn't understand such an obvious joke :P

saying a band sucks is not giving them criticism though..

"Shadows7X"

Janes Addiction started late 80s continued through 90s, split reformed and did another album, toured and then split.
And i think there albums are awesome and totally better than anything AS have done.

Theres alot of better bands around before and after Avenged Sevenfold. I dont understand why people like them so, lets subtract all the girl fans who like them because of there typical of today image.

Thats majority of there fanbase gone.

Now for those who are left, whats so good about them? What do they do that is so amazing, they dont have songs you can relate to really, the songs on the new self titled album arnt even memorable. Granted City of Evil does have memorable songs but the chorus's are cringeworthy to the fullest and thats what i can never dig about City Of Evil.

Ok, synster or however his name is spelt, is a good guitarist, i like his guitar solos and i like the twin leads he and zakky(i think? lol)  do together. But other than that, the music simply has nothing about it and the vocals are weak which is a big turn off point in the music they output.

Ok ive given a post with points, i havent ripped on the band, ive brought up points, that someone here can address if they wish as to why they disagree. So if anyone who will give a good, non retarded "your an asshole, you listen to this band, they suck blah blah", reply, do so.

That was a good honest post...I do disagree with you saying how Janes Addiction was...I personally thought they were terrible...they had horrible choruses, Dave Navarro is a weak guitarist and Perry sounds like a chick....im not ripping you for liking them....taste in music is an opinion...everyone has a different one

as far as the reason I like Sevenfold and think they are the greatest band of the last 20 years is because they have phenomenal meaningful lyrics, their solos are great, they have great song arrangements...all of their records sound different and they dont try to fit into any type of genre, they just record whatever they want...the last record had metal songs, country songs, and a song that sounded like it could be the soundtrack to a Tim Burton movie....I just think they are very diverse rock band, with all of the attitude that GNR had....The main thing is that ALL of their records sound different...I dont understand how someone who is into GNR and Motley Crue could be turned off by a7x....as far as the vocals go I like the fact that they have a punk rock vocalist singing over twin leads....every other band I heard with twin leads had that whailing british vocals like Priest and Maiden...and I cant stand those bands....just my opinion....

I also thought the last self titled album is one of the best records I have ever heard...very diverse, catchy, hard...you name it it had it....I personally cant shut it off

i liked Gunslinger and the first single off it. But the rest didnt have very good riffs.

See ive tried very hard to like the band because i like the guitar work. But city of evil the chorus's spoil it, and self titled the majority of the songs dont do very much for me.

The only song which isnt completely cheese ridden of city of evil is bat county which i think is a good song. I would have loved Beast and the Harlot.....if it wasnt for that chorus lol.

I'm not a fan but as mentioned earlier the beast and the harlot could've been a pretty good song if it wasn't for the chorus. I fail to recognise any GnR comparisons that have been attributed to them though!

The biggest similarity is some of the vocal melodies and accents. Musically they seem more inspired by a mix of Iron maiden/punk/pantera, especially on COE. You should check out a song from COE called "Trashed and Scattered" and you'll see why they get the guns comparison. Lyrically and attitude wise it is very Axl. I like the song and think of it more as being inspired by Axl as opposed to blatantly ripping him off, but I could easily see how someone could get that op[inion. Also I think a lot of the comparisons made about A7X and GNR have more to do with the bands lifestyle and how the old line up was back in the day.

They are from England.

"across the pond" means over the Channel where France and Europe begins.

Apparently the UK are apart of Europe now but no one really likes to think of us being apart of it. And we havent even changed our currency to the euro anyway so we ain't properly apart of it.

Oasis are from the UK asswipe.

fuck coldplay and fuck BFMV.

When i say Europe, i mean across the pond. if you get the term.

so Oasis are not from Europe?
They are from England.

"across the pond" means over the Channel where France and Europe begins.

I thought it was their best one...definitely their best tour..ive seen them 9 times and the few times on this tour really showed how they perfected their live show.  I guess it is more radio friendly although I have actually heard them on the radio maybe twice in the past 5 years here in the New York market.

I'll agree with you that they put on one hell of a live show. I couldn't believe how much better Matt sang live as compared to the studio, and they're just plain fun to watch.

just got the steel panther album. matt sings on turn out the lights, very funny. imo opinion, i dont think radio friendly is a bad thing. i think each one of their albums has shown growth in the band. the fact that they could do a song like little piece of heaven shows they aren't afraid to take chances. if i wanted to hear a band that stays the same i'd just listen to slayer. & that's not a shot at slayer, i love slayer, but they dont exactly push the boundaries.

Avenged Sevenfold just got the legendary and quite possibly greatest rock drummer of all time Mike Portnoy to record the Rev's parts for the new album!!!

DREAM THEATER Drummer Is 'Honored' To Be Playing With AVENGED SEVENFOLD - Feb. 18, 2010
Orange County, California hard rockers AVENGED SEVENFOLD have tapped DREAM THEATER's Mike Portnoy to play on their forthcoming album following the recent passing of AVENGED SEVENFOLD drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan.

Commented Portnoy: "Even under normal circumstances I would've been happy to help the guys out in any way I could, as I think AVENGED SEVENFOLD are a great band...but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them... and I didn't even have to think twice about saying yes.

"These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there's a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make...

"I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy's memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.

"I want their fans to realize that I'm not trying to step into or fill The Rev's shoes...I'm just merely lacing 'em up for him!"

Sullivan was found dead at his Huntington Beach home on December 28.

The Orange County coroner's office ordered "toxicology, microscopic and laboratory tests" to help determine why Sullivan died.

Regarding their decision to ask Portnoy to be involved in the making of the new album, AVENGED SEVENFOLD said in a statement, "Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it's our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans.

"We asked Jimmy's all-time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that's what Jim would have wanted.

"It's comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev's abilities.

"Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy."

UPDATE FROM ZACKY IN THE STUDIO
Wed, 02/24/2010 - 19:56

Finished tracking drums with MP. They sound fucking amazing. Jimmy will be proud. Jimmy's also smiling knowing that Mike Portnoy has a deathbat forever tattooed on him. To show Mike that A7X is deeper then just a band I got one to match his. Jimmy would have done the same. Mike realized that our fans and friends are considered family. Being an A7X fan isn?t always easy because it means you?re not only gonna laugh with us, but cry with us and defend us on occasion. If you?re part of the family it's for life. Shads dedicated his right hand to our brother, without hesitation. I believe what we all share together is magical and wouldn't have it any other way...Ill try my best to keep you updated from the studio.
much love

MIKE PORTNOY WILL BE DRUMMING WITH A7X
Quote
After having had such an amazing experience recording my drum tracks for the new Avenged Sevenfold album, we all knew it would be awesome if I'd be able to do some touring with the band after its release...

I am happy to say that the timing worked out perfectly that my touring cycle with Dream Theater (and Transatlantic) was coming to an end just as A7X's was scheduled begin!

(well, perfect for everyone except my poor family!) : )

Although I wish I could stay on board with A7X in a more permanent capacity, the reality is that I am committed to Dream Theater as my main priority (that is my baby after all!), and I will need to resume work with DT to start a new album at some point in 2011....

However, I will be able to join my brothers in Avenged Sevenfold for at least the duration of their touring throughout 2010...and hopefully this will give them the time to continue to heal and get comfortable back on the road....

You can look at me like the band's "rebound drummer" to buy them some time until they are comfortable and ready to make a commitment to somebody new for full-time relationship in their future!

In the meantime, I am real excited to hit the road with the boys...to bring my drumming from their new album to life on stage and to honor The Rev with all of their older material....

(Hey, do I get to have a cool, bad-ass stage name now???) : )

C-ya out there,

MP

I thought cheesy rock music was your thing.  Do they not  have enough references to how they "love to rock," or have "come here to rock",  or will be rocking "all night long" for your taste? :hihi:

Post by: mrlee on May 25, 2010, 05:38:53 PM
yeah i like some of that cheese, but its got good riffs to back it up.

This "Nightmare" song is a different type of cheese, the lyrics fall closely to Iron Maidens level of tackyness with all the flesh, monsters "ohh scaryyyy". Plus his Axl "Its so Easy" impersonating is getting worse!

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: Bodhi on May 25, 2010, 09:30:29 PM
well agree to disagree. It wasnt about monsters it was about being a shitty person and going to hell(burning flesh).  I think lyrically A7X is better than most current metal/rock bands, their songs actually tell a story, they are not about how much pussy they can get or how much alcohol they can drink.  And the guitar playing, bass and drumming is light years ahead of other bands.  Mike Portnoy is the greatest rock drummer in the history of mankind, the only guy close to him in recent years was the Rev, which is why he is a perfect fit for this record.

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: mrlee on May 26, 2010, 11:30:45 AM
i just think its too over the top though.

Example, the drum intro to that song. The OTT "drums a million beats at once" drum roll. Just lacks in the rythym. I think things can get overly technical sometimes  n it spoils a songs groove.

NUMBER 1!!!!!!!!!

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's 'Nightmare' Headed For Top Of U.S. Chart - July 28, 2010

"Nightmare", the fifth album from Orange County, California's AVENGED SEVENFOLD, is likely to sell between 160,000 and 175,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at the top of next week's The Billboard 200 chart, according to industry web site Hits Daily Double. The estimate was based on one-day sales reports compiled after the record arrived in stores on Tuesday (July 27).

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's self-titled fourth album sold 94,000 copies in its first week of release back in November 2007, nearly three times what its 2005 effort, "City of Evil", sold in its biggest week on the chart.

the vocals are some of my favorite parts actually, its like having kind of a punk/screamer voice over dueling twin guitar solos.  Usually its some type of wailing british style voice like Dickinson or Halford over music like this, its different which is why I like it.  The wailers sound like they are about to fight dragons with swords, this has an edge to it.  plus most importantly he never sings about how much he loves to "rock" or about getting wasted and "partying."

I really think that Shadows has come into his own vocally in this record. He sounds a lot less whiny than he has in previous records.
Also... God Hates Us is my least favourite track on the record. I prefer the more melodic stuff.

its not really punk vocals though, punk vocals are often more aggressive.

He just sings in a mock "Its so Easy" Axl Rose voice most of the tone, its really monotone and gets really uninspired. and screaming vocals of today suck ass. If it were Sebastian Bach screams, id be happy. But hes a far cry from bach.

Also, "shes a dwelling place for demoms" and various cheese is alot worse than singing about partying. While i prefer good lyrics, i dont think you can use A7x's lyrics to impress me lol!

the album is alot to consume. but it has so much emotion in not only the lyrics, but the guitar work also. the drumming is unreal. as far as the lyrics for beast and the harlot, they are not cheesy at all. they are very biblical & have alot of metaphors. maybe they are too complex for some, or not your cup of tea. from there 1st release to nightmare they have grown up so much. this is a very special band. im just so happy & excited to see what lies ahead 4 them.

Well if everyone (and by everyone, im not just on bout this forum) wasnt buttlicking them just because their drummer died...i wouldnt have to!!!

Its what i call John Lennon Syndrome. Once the dude dies, everything is seen through rose tinted glasses.

Happened with Nirvana n Kurt Cobain. In Utero is horrendous for the most part n its treated like some holy album.

Everyone suddenly became Pantera fans, and the band became cool again once Dimebag died. (i like Pantera though)

And anyway, for the most part, i just post about bands i like on these forums. Everybody else gets to rip when they want. So im sure, just for one band, im allowed a good rant or two about them.

Well if everyone (and by everyone, im not just on bout this forum) wasnt buttlicking them just because their drummer died...i wouldnt have to!!!

lee, you were in this thread when the self titled came out as well and was writing about how shitty they were, at that time, both me and bodhi were already fans so we didn't start to buttlick 'em when the rev died, you're full of it now man..

Its what i call John Lennon Syndrome. Once the dude dies, everything is seen through rose tinted glasses.

couldnt be further from the truth.  First of all who is "everyone" on this forum?  There are like 4 people who post in this thread.  Second, you know how many album sales their drummer dying contributed to?  0,  Ill spell it out ZERO.  This is a band that gets zero radio airplay and most people in America have no idea who the hell they are, let alone that their drummer died.  The sales of their last few records have been trending upwards for years and this thing was hitting number 1 or 2 even if the drummer didnt die.

And on a side note, ive been "buttlicking" this band and saying how much better they are than everyone for like 6 years now.  Not suddenly... :hihi:

last off topic post. But i do not see the hype.

Their previous albums had some great stuff. But minus the "ballady" type songs of all apologies etc. The rock songs are crap, the guitars n vocals are all out of tune etc.

yeah absolutely, i think we talked about this before at some point.  I have heard Avenged on the radio twice in 10 years, and on indie stations, never a mainstream rock station. They are almost an underground band here in the states.

in utero sold very well & was praised by critics, and fans way before kurt died. you can't compare the rev. passing to kurt at all. comparing cliff from metallica is similar. when cliff died nobody outside of the metal world cared. metallica was growing in popularity. once justice was released, (i dont count garage days as a album) it blew everyone away. did cliffs' passing sell justice? hell no! the music did. thats what will sell "nightmare". and i live in los angeles and a7x get no radio play here. i dont like acdc, but i would never rip them because i would look foolish, and yes i have seen acdc live & they are awesome, i just dont care for there music. as i understand people dont like a7x, thats fine, but why even post in there section? if i posted in a acdc section i would look like a ass. btw, i just got the instrumentals of nightmare. the inst. give you a different aspect of the cd. the drumming is insane. i just cant get enough of this cd.

hell no, they play like 3,000 seat places, they only play arenas when they headline with another big band or 2.  They sell out most shows, but they are not a well known band in the states, def part of a certain scene.

That's crazy. In the UK their going to be part of a high profile co-headline tour with Stone Sour. I had no idea that they didn't get treated the same way in their home country.
I've been a fan since I heard Trashed & Scattered on a CD that came on the cover of a magazine over here in '05. Then saw them play in London, and in 06 they had a pretty respectable place on the bill at Download that was pretty damn awesome.

yeah they are a popular band in the states, but only among certain people. They get no radio play whatsoever here in the NYC area.  This album will debut at number 1 on the billboard charts, maybe number 2 if Eminem holds up, but i woulndnt be surprised if it drops out of the Top 10 next week or maybe even 20, cause everyone that wants it bought it the first week, they arent in position to win over new fans with promo because they really dont get any promo.  Also keep in mind this is a country that thinks Slash is still in GNR, have no idea that "Chinese Democracy" came out and also fills up 20,000 seat arenas to watch Nickelback...so......

Musically Mark Tremonti pisses all over Everclear, there is no argument there,  as I have always said I enjoy Tremontis playing he is a great guitar player.  Although his playing in Alter Bridge blows away Creed, he still has a some cool riffs in Creed.   You actually thought Art was a good songwriter and artist....thats classic. Then again judging from your musical interests besides GNR, musicianship is obviously not a priority for you.  So you not "getting" Avenged Sevenfold makes all the more sense..

Regardless of that Avenged Sevenfold is the best young hard rock band going today, so lets focus on that.  Once again, I dont know why you are trolling this thread..

Everclear were never a guitar band. For someone like yourself with such intimate knowledge of the music world, you should know such an argument is absurd. They were a grunge band who morphed into an alternative band. After 15 years, everyone and their dog still agrees Sparkle and Fade is one of the defintive grunge albums of the '90s.

On the otherhand, who in the 21st Century even remotely cares about Creed? Oh, total meatheads like yourself.

Say what you will about Everclear or Art, but at least they always looked like a solid rock band, not like aX7 below who look like a bunch of girls who stole their mom?s makeup kit before raiding Hot Topic:

Off topic: I remember seeing an interview with that arrogant fuckwit Everclear frontman saying about certain bands overstaying their welcome ie. some of the bigger rock bands that were around at the time.
And well Art, I happen to think Everclear overstayed their welcome after their first single came out. I thought their music was ok for what it was, but statements like that make me think "who the fuck are you to judge other bands an musicians that have been around for a while?"

And to call their shitty "pop" CD a definitive album from the grunge period, is just laughable.

Back on topic: I've head plenty of good things about this new Ax7 album, and I've seen some great live footage of them, so I'll buy this album to check it out, and to support them seeing there aren't many good rock bands around these days.

Not for its image alone - though it certainly doesn't help. The fact that it is the most awful music ever to be referred to as 'rock' is the main reason it's put down, though.

Everclear's major-label debut is a tough, melodic set of gnarled post-punk hard rock. An easy comparison is Nirvana, but Everclear's music is closer to the country-rock leanings of Screaming Trees ? underneath their loud, grungy guitars there is a distinct rootsiness lacking in most Seattle bands and that gives Sparkle and Fade its edge.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD Bassist On Topping BILLBOARD Chart - Aug. 4, 2010

Bassist Johnny Christ of Orange County, California's AVENGED SEVENFOLD spoke to MTV News about how the band celebrated the news that its fifth album, "Nightmare", debuted at the top of The Billboard 200 chart with first-week sales of over 162,000 copies.

"I got the call from my manager last night," Christ said. "Unfortunately, Matt [Sanders, better known as M. Shadows] and Zack [a.k.a. Zacky Vengeance] were doing press in L.A., but me and Brian [a.k.a. Synyster Gates] went out to celebrate and had some dinner together. It was pretty fun. It was more about the drinks. We were just drinking, having a good time. We should have been being good boys and not drinking last night, but it's the first time we're on the top of the Billboard, and that only happens once. We had to do something."

"Nightmare" was completed after the death of drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away last December following an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol. Vengeance told The Pulse of Radio how the band got through the making of the record after losing their friend. "You know, you carry on knowing that there's something so much more important than yourself to deliver, to millions of fans across the world, to all your friends, and to yourself," he said. "To put out this piece of music that he helped write with us is extremely, extremely difficult and I don't wish it on anybody. But I think the end result is even that much more spectacular because it brought us all closer and we did, you know, him justice."

The band recruited DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy to play on the new album and all the band's 2010 tour dates.

Portnoy made his concert debut with the band on July 25 as they played live for the first time since Sullivan's death at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD will co-headline this summer's inaugural Uproar Festival tour with DISTURBED and STONE SOUR, beginning on August 17 in Minneapolis.

Yeah, that sounds like the epitome of "pop" :hihi:

All the singles released from the album sounded like pop rock to me, I don't need to read a review to tell me what my ears hear.

Yes, and singles are always representative of what an entire album sounds like - all of STP's 4 sounds exactly like Sour Girl ::)

I don't believe we were talking about STP, but all the stuff I've heard played on the radio by Everclear sounds like pop rock, and pretty lame pop rock at that.

You can argue your point about "definitive grunge album" all you want, they sure don't sound like it to me.

Avenged Sevenfold Hit Number One, Prove Metal Is Recession Proof
 by Amy Sciarretto

Avenged Sevenfold debuted at the plum spot of number one on this week's Billboard sales chart, with their new album 'Nightmare' selling nearly 163,000 copies its first week in stores and finally toppling Eminem from his month-long reign atop the charts.

That's a huge amount of records in today's marketplace, and the band has been clawing its way to the top since the early '00s, so it's a testament to their work ethic and to the devotion of their fans, who rallied behind the band when drummer Jimmy 'The Rev' Sullivan unexpectedly passed away in late December. Moreover, it's one of two key factors that are proving that in a down music industry, metal is recession-proof.

In addition to 'Nightmare' outpacing its self-titled predecessor by nearly doubling its first week's sales tally, the third annual Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, featuring the likes of Korn, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God, Five Finger Death Punch, Hatebreed and Shadows Fall, among others, is bucking the summer tour trend that has seen acts like Christina Aguilera and Limp Bizkit cancel entire tours and more mainstream-leaning jaunts like the all-female Lilith Fair and the 'American Idol' tour axing dates.

The touring market is sluggish, with ticket sales plummeting to alarming, code red lows, but with Mayhem, it's full steam ahead. The tour is enjoying a 30 percent increase in sales this summer, thanks to an attractive and affordable ticket price for a 10-hour day of quality metal entertainment. Fans are turning out in droves, showing up for the side stage bands and staying through the headliner encore.

While there is no denying that the economy is in a tenuous state, the metal community is still looking for quality entertainment with value-friendly prices. The headbangers are still buying records and showing up for concerts. We may be flirting with a recession overall and record and ticket sales continue to dip, but Avenged Sevenfold, who will co-headline the Uproar festival starting later this month, which picks up where Mayhem leaves off, and Mayhem are two shining example of metal circumventing the recession and serving as a bright spot! Music heals and cures and metal fans are letting it the genre do its job.

im wondering what the drop off in record sales will be this week. i honestly think a7x should be the last band on stage rather than disturbed. a7x just put on a way better show, & really get the crowd into it. i would hate to have to go on after them, they really tire the crowd out!

Post by: Bodhi on August 10, 2010, 03:02:23 PM
Im anticipating a HUGE drop off this second week.  The fans all bought it first week or found an independent retailer and bought it before the first week(like me), they are not a mainstream band, everyone who wants the record has it already...

Post by: fear the juggalo 2 on August 10, 2010, 05:23:37 PM
i agree. almost every album has a huge drop off with the exception of eminem & susan boyle. im sure if they do snl it will help. (which is a rumor). if it can stay in the top 10 that would be great. regardless, 162k is very impressive, along with a successful tour is a plus. i just hope if they cant get portnoy to stay, they can find a replacement. i would love to see atreyu drummer jump ships. he has a great voice, & is a good song writer. he's also a solid drummer.

yeah Atreyu is a great band too...i know they have Portnoy till the end of the year and they booked dates for next year already so that tells me they have a replacement in mind.  SNL would be great if they played that...

wow! i am really suprised by it staying in the top 10. number 3 is great. have you seen how much the limited edition version is selling for on ebay? the lithograph alone sold for over 300 bucks, & the cd sells for over 200. i knew i should have bought more than one!

i believe they only made 2000 of them. im gonna use the deathbat on the lithograph for my chest tattoo. i really like the detail in the wings. i also hope they release a blu ray of this uproar tour. the show looks awesome! as i've said many times, this band is the real deal. may we see a gnr,a7x, faith no more summer tour? hmmm?

i enjoyed some songs off their paper sails album.

I know they released a new album but it didnt seem to get any airplay or much press here in the UK. (they did tremendously well on previous albums, i guess the metalcore fad is going out of style here)

Out of all the new American Metal bands this is the only one thats done anything for me.

Although again, the production on the album makes the songs alot less heavier than they could of been. But live these guys are a spectacle. I saw them on support for Airbourne n they kicked ass.

Latest single (unfortuantely they released a mellow track, but meh)

-edit- managed to find a pro shot live vid, although the mixing leaves something to be desired, better than a cam video though.

ok so i went to the uproar tour last night. a7x was unreal. the stage my only complaint was the setlist was too short. this is a must see show. even if you dont like the band the show is exactly that, a show! i hope they keep this stage & go back out by themselves.

I personally like when the dude hangs himself at the beginning of the show...I saw them on Uproar 3 times, im going to post some pics here in the next day or two...your right great set, but too short, thats what happens when you have to co-headline.  Disturbed going on last is complete bullshit by the way...

Title: Re: Avenged Sevenfold
Post by: fear the juggalo 2 on September 19, 2010, 04:49:53 AM
i agree. the set is way to short. i only watched 2 songs by disturbed. they wernt bad, but they need to go on before a7x. i hope they do their own tour with this show. i hope they release a dvd. i just cant stop thinking about how good that was. one of my fav. shows of all time, & i was at vegas 01/01/01. it is real close to that. when that banner of jimmy went up. i choked up. that was awesome. his family was at the show. it was great. i really hope mike stays with them for awhile. his drumming is unreal!

Thats cool, but every theatrical show needs a flying drummer!

Just ask Tommy Lee, or Joey Jordison!

i think it sold that the 1st week, or close to it. i dont think it has gone gold yet though. i think this tour is really helping the sales. they are getting such good reviews, & they deserve them. the show is mind blowing!

They are probably in the 350,000 to 400,000 range by now, it did about 250,000 in the first 2 weeks, and its been in the Top 20 for like 2 months till now,

oh yeah, it was easily the biggest hard rock album of the year.  "Welcome to the Family" is a great song, but  i would have liked to see them go with a Rev tribute video for "So Far Away".."Buried Alive" is amazing but was already used as a lyric video when the album came out..

Starting to really get into this band, the more I delve into their catalogue, the more I find I like after a few listens.

I'm absolutely loving Almost Easy at the moment, just a great kick ass heavy rock tune.

I have City Of Evil, and I plan to get their self-titled and Nightmare.
There's an album that came out before City of Evil though right?

yeah the album before City of Evil is called "Waking the Fallen" and is still regarded by many as their best album.  FYI the vocals are different on "Waking the Fallen"  Matt screams the verses on most songs and sings the chorus, they were a big part of the Orange County Metalcore scene at that time, and that was their style.

Yeah, I've seen some live footage of them playing some Waking the Fallen material, and I'm not a fan of the screaming vocals, I'm glad he shifted to more melodic, actual singing.

i really like stst & waking the fallen. the vocals are different, but are still very diverse. i remember the 1st time a saw them play. the thing that caught my eye was zacky wearing a gnr shirt. (back then it was'nt cool to like gnr). after there set i met them & they gave me a demo cd. (which is stst, but different takes, no synyster gates, & a bass player named justin sane). when i listened to the album, i knew they had the "it" factor. this wasnt just another band. then waking the fallen hit. that album has elements of gnr, pantera, metallica, & queen. you could here something special & unique was forming. (to this day, i hear something different everytime i listen to it). then city of evil hit, & the rest is history.(& for the record the self titled is a very good album.) i love that this band is not afraid to try things different. but give the 1st 2 albums a listen. they may be a different gem. but you may find that they sparkle just as much as the others!

i agree bodhi, they get better on every tour. this last tour was unreal. the stage show was top notch. i dont think there is a better live act on tour right now. (sorry guns). it really is a unbelievable show. if they could get a gnr/a7x tour that would be a dream. i cant see how any gnr fans could deny a7x if they saw that nightmare tour. but seeing them in the early days was different . i remember them getting booed off the stage when they opened for shadows fall & poison the well. ohh have times changed!

How does the new album Nightmare compare to their other albums?

In my opinion "Nightmare" is their best album with the self titled and "Waking the Fallen"  being tied for a very close second.  "Nightmare" just is a very complete record, great solos, ballads, heavy stuff, catchy choruses its pretty much everything I have loved about this band over the past 6 years all rolled into one package. I really feel like it is the best hard rock record of the last decade for sure.  I like how they are not scared to do anything.  For instance the end of self titled there is a song called "A little Piece of Heaven" and that thing is so far out of left field.  They worked with Danny Elfman's(Beetlejuice theme) orchestra on that one.  Then they have a country ballad at the end with "Dear God"  I like that they dont feel like they have to fit a certain genre.

nightmare is their ".and justice for all". not that it sounds like justice, but its their comming out. nightmare has everything. imo it will go down as one of the great hard rock albums of all time. if they release "buried alive", it will do what "one" did for metallica. the song is that good!

Yeah, I didn't really get A Little Piece of Heaven when I first listened through. I just thought WTF??? as it sounds like a polka tune in parts. But when I went back over the lyrics and saw the hilarious animated film clip, I have a new appreciation for it. The lyrics are pretty fucked up though - "I knew you would be cold, that's why I bought a heater for your thighs" referring to some messed up necrophilia stuff going on...  It's obviously all tongue in cheek though!

Thanks for the write up on Nightmare too, I'm gonna absorb these other albums some more first, then head out and get Nightmare.
I've just gone nuts on Avenged Sevenfold over the last week, and I'm loving them!

Its so weird how in America the band is like this little cult band.

They are huge in the UK. Probably one of the most popular modern metal bands to come out in the mid 00s and still are.

Other bands that came out with similar success levels at the time with them (which associated them all together at that time) were  Trivium, and Bullet for My Valentine.

Haha, I don't know where you live Bohdi, but here in Vegas A7X is played constantly. I can't turn on the radio without hearing Nightmare. I also listen to a radio stream from Grand Forks, ND and they're constantly playing it as well. They just got done with the Uproar tour, and every review I read about that said they were easily the best band of the night and most people were there to see them and not Disturbed. IMO A7X is pretty fucking big in the states right now. Yes, radio pushes crap like Nickelback and Saving Able, to the point where I wanna strangle myself, but Avenged is far from a cult band here in the States and hardly ignored. They are playing the Joint in December, and I really want to go, but after looking at their recent setlists....10 songs? that's it? an Hour? WTF? I know they were part of a festival, but if the show doesn't get any longer than that, I don't think i can justify a ticket. Hell, I get pissed everytime I see Motley just because they stick to the 90 minute and not a second over rule.

I live in the New York City/NJ area..and no one outside of people who actively FOLLOW hard rock know who they are.  That is this area, where pop and rap still dominate.  I went to 3 Uproar shows here and they were packed so the fans are there, but we dont even have a modern rock radio station in the NYC area. My friends who are into Metallica and GNR and all that know who they of course, but random people always ask me what is "avenged sevenfold" when they see me wearing a shirt of theirs.  They certainly have a following in this area, but are far from a household name.  I work for a music channel in NYC and we actually do play them all the time, but we are the exception to the rule.  We have about 5 different Top 40 stations all playing the same songs.

Well if they don't get played in America, there's no chance I'd hear them in Australia then! :hihi:

I remember seeing a couple of their videos (Bat County, Seize the Day) on a heavy metal videos show, when I used to have cable tv, but other than that, nothing.
All I'd heard about them was from online, and some rock magazine write ups here and there that I'd read.

And yeah, it is a shame they're playing such short sets. They have a big catalog of great songs to pick form!

They're playing a festival in Australia in February next year, so I imagine it'd probably be the same there.
Still hoping they play a side show of their own too.

its not your fault, they get no radio play whatsoever in America.  This country is too busy pushing bands like Nickelback, Saving Abel, ETC...most people have never heard them.

Well if they don't get played in America, there's no chance I'd hear them in Australia then! :hihi:

hahah my bad, i thought you were from America for some reason..I need to start checkin those profiles..haha

nightmare is their ".and justice for all". not that it sounds like justice, but its their comming out. nightmare has everything. imo it will go down as one of the great hard rock albums of all time. if they release "buried alive", it will do what "one" did for metallica. the song is that good!
Uh oh, looks like your favorite bands gonna be going down hill on the next album release!!!

downhill?  The Black album is the best Metallica album..so they will go downhill after the next album, and then return to be the kings of rock 12 years later...

as far as the uproar tour, they were not allowed to play any longer. at our show in irvine they asked the promoter if they could play last because it was their home town. the promoter said he didnt have a problem with it, but it was up to disturbed. they asked disturbed & they said "no"! but they are headlining the joint show so it will be longer. as far as the black album goes, i dont like it. i felt like bob rock really messed them up. i live in los angeles & a7x get no play at all here.

where did you hear that story about Disturbed?  Thats dick if they did that.  Disturbed fucking blows, I went to 3 of the Uproar shows and left before Disturbed came on every night except 1 where I stayed for 10 minutes and felt like I was watching a UFC commerical.

Its simplified and made with an accessible radio ready mindset. As far as creativity goes, its a let down.

On song writing though its got some good shit (although ill be honest, im not really a big metallica fan at all)

To be fair though, i think as an outsider non fan, id like Avenged more if they had shorter straight up songs rather than the progressive rock influence and experimentation. For their sound, id prefer that.

(not saying i dont like genre crossing though, im a fan of some very strange bands)

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's 'Nightmare' Is No. 1 Most Played Track At Media Base Active Rock For 2010 - Oct. 20, 2010

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's current single, "Nightmare", is the most played song at Media Base Active Rock for 2010. The track has achieved 34,311 spins and is expected to hold the No. 1 position for the rest of the year. The song climbed to No. 1 on the Active Rock chart in August, where it remained for three weeks. "Nightmare" has also enjoyed airplay at Mainstream and Modern Rock radio stations across the country and was the No. 1 Rock Song on iTunes in the U.S. and the U.K. in its debut week.

"Nightmare", the fifth album from AVENGED SEVENFOLD, sold 162,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at the top of The Billboard 200 chart.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's self-titled fourth album opened with 94,000 units back in November 2007, nearly three times what its 2005 effort, "City of Evil", sold in its biggest week on the chart.

The official video for "Nightmare", the album's first single and title track, premiered on MTV2, MTV.com, and MTV2.com on July 17 and became the second most popular video on YouTube, racking up more than 1,280,865 views in its first week. The "lyric" video that premiered via YouTube has racked up three million views.

"Nightmare" was completed after the death of drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who passed away last December following an overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol.

The band recruited DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy to play on the new album and all the band's 2010 tour dates.

Portnoy made his concert debut with the band on July 25 as they played live for the first time since Sullivan's death at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

yeah, i've met them a few times. a few of my friends are very close 2 them. my son plays the drums, & one time we spoke to them the rev. sat down with him for 30 min & helped him with his timing. he didnt have to do that, but just did out of the kindness of his heart. it's things like that, that define you as a person. if only other bands would treat their fans the way a7x do, they would have even more success!

how'd you guys rate their albums? i'd say

2. Waking The Fallen
3. City Of Evil
4. Diamonds In The Rough
5. Sounding The Seventh Trumpet
6. Avenged Sevenfold

1. sounding the seventh trumpet    2. nightmare         3. waking the fallen                  4. avenged sevenfold             5. city of evil       6. d.i.t.r (i dont even count that as a album)              my list may be a lil' jaded. stst goes first because thats how i got into then, so that album is special to me. the st should be higher because that album still gets the most play. im sure from month to month the order would change for me.

ok heres my ranking

1. Nightmare
2. Avenged Sevenfold
3. Waking the Fallen
4. City of Evil
5. Diamonds in the Rough
6. Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

I will add that I love STST, and just cause its last doesnt mean I dont like it.  I love all of their stuff.

Dry County is an awesome song, one of Bon Jovi's best, but I don't hear any A7x influence or style in there particularly.

I dont think the words progressive or epic belong in the same sentence as Bon Jovi.   :hihi:

Things are going to sound similar in western music notation. That's just the nature of the beast. Bon Jovi aren't unique sounding in anyway.

With Dry County you can make an exception. Very epic song, unlike the stuff their churning out these days.
This is from Keep The Faith era of the bad when they were putting out some of their very best music too.

I saw these guys open up for GN'R in Paris and Hammersmith in 2006. It is horrible what they've had to go through recently, but they have come out stronger.

I must admit, I don't listen to them all that much, but I admire and respect them as a band.

And it's cool how much they all love Guns N' Roses.

yeah I think Slippery When Wet, New Jersey, Keep The Faith and These Days were awesome...definitely a solid decade of great song writing.  I even enjoy a good amount of the new songs over the last 10 years, but I must admit when I hear some of the new songs Im not sure if it is  Taylor Swift or Bon Jovi until the vocals start.

There's no GA pit here, all seats. Only time I ever saw GA pit there was for Breaking Benjamin/Three Days Grace - the other shows were seated.

I didn't grab any yet, don't think it will sell out - and need to find the 'right seats' ;)

interesting....and surprising.

MIKE PORTNOY's Time With AVENGED SEVENFOLD Comes To An End - Dec. 16, 2010

Former DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy has released the following statement:

"Yes, the rumors are true... Sadly my time with AVENGED SEVENFOLD has come to an end... The band has decided to carry on into 2011 without me...

"I had a great time with them throughout 2010, but it was their choice to end the relationship at the end of 2010 as was always the initial plan....

"I had an awesome time on stage with the guys every night and have so many cool memories from the experience with them... I am proud to always be part of the AVENGED SEVENFOLD family and history. I also adore the AVENGED SEVENFOLD fans and totally appreciate the way they welcomed me aboard and were so loving and supportive during my time with the band...thank you!

"As far as my future, I am excited by the endless musical possibilities that lie ahead of me...my love for music runs very deep and my taste is very broad and ecclectic which will give me the chance to explore many different things and collaborate with many great friends and artists I admire and respect...

"Happy holidaze to you all and c-ya in the New Year."

Drum-cam footage of Mike Portnoy performing the songs "Almost Easy" and "Welcome To The Family" with AVENGED SEVENFOLD on November 20, 2010 in Stockholm, Sweden and November 14, 2010 in Paris, France, respectively, can be viewed below.

AVENGED recruited Portnoy to play on its new album, "Nightmare", following the death last December of the band's drummer, James "The Rev" Sullivan. Portnoy was Sullivan's favorite drummer.

Portnoy recently stated about his involvement with AVENGED SEVENFOLD (see video below), "The relationship started as a tribute for Jimmy, and as a result of the musical and personal chemistry making the record, it's blossomed into being on the road with them. Originally that was only going to be for a couple of months until I went back to DREAM THEATER. Now because of the way the DREAM THEATER story unfolded, I will remain out with AVENGED SEVENFOLD into 2011, and stay on the road with them through the whole album cycle."

He added, "Although I'm not a band member [of AVENGED SEVENFOLD], I'm definitely part of the onstage presentation and chemistry. During the first couple of shows I played I was trying to lean back and be respectful. I was thinking, 'This is Jimmy's drum throne, this is his space.' But they were like, 'No! Be yourself, do your thing.' I came out of my shell and now I'm totally at home with these guys. We have a great chemistry, musically and personally."

Portnoy added one of Sullivan's cymbals to his touring kit: a Sabian ride The Rev had owned for years which the company had refurbished, but hadn't been able to return before his death.

Portnoy made his concert debut with AVENGED SEVENFOLD on July 25 as they played live for the first time since Sullivan's death at the Heavy MTL festival in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Nightmare is a good album, but I wouldn't say it's their best. It has far too many slow songs on there.
That said, I think Buried Alive is one of the best songs they've ever written, but strongest album is their self-titled effort.

Sadly the album has too much slow shit on it.

If Buried Alive was released to rock radio as a single, I think it could do for A7x what Metallica releasing Unforgiven did for them.

Well, maybe not, but it's a really great ballad-y number, that kicks you in the ass at the end!

AVENGED SEVENFOLD Performs With New Touring Drummer For First Time (Video) - Jan. 21, 2011

AVENGED SEVENFOLD kicked off the "Nightmare After Christmas" tour with STONE SOUR and HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD on Thursday (January 20) in Reading, Pennsylvania. The show marked AVENGED's live debut with Arin Ilejay, formerly the drummer for Los Angeles-based Christian rock group CONFIDE, who is sitting behind the kit for AVENGED's upcoming tour dates.

AVENGED SEVENFOLD's setlist was as follows:

01. Nightmare
02. Critical Acclaim
03. Welcome to the Family
04. Danger Line
05. Buried Alive
06. So Far Away
07. Afterlife
08. God Hates Us
09. Bat Country
10. Unholy Confessions

Encore:

11. Fiction
12. A Little Piece of Heaven

Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be viewed below.

The relatively unknown Ilejay is the second drummer to play with AVENGED SEVENFOLD following the December 2009 death of original drummer James "The Rev" Sullivan. The band recruited ex-DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy to play on its latest album, "Nightmare", and all its 2010 tour dates before dismissing him at the end of the year.

The band said in a statement, "We recently asked several friends who knew Jimmy and his style, and also knew our music and each of our personalities to suggest drummers to tour with us starting this year. Our longtime studio drum tech Mike Fasano recommended Arin Ilejay. We've rehearsed with Arin and have been impressed with his technical skills, attitude and work ethic. We're very excited to tour with Arin and hope all of you will give him the warm welcome to the family we have."

Ilejay played on CONFIDE's 2008 debut album, "Shout The Truth", and appeared on tour with the group.

Sullivan was found dead in his Huntington Beach, California home at the age of 28. His death was attributed to a lethal combination of prescription drugs and alcohol.

AVENGED frontman M. Shadows told The Pulse Of Radio that he was surprised to get both STONE SOUR and HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD for the "Nightmare After Christmas" tour. "When we wanted to put this tour together, we didn't think that we could get both of them on the same bill, but it turned out that they were both willing to do that," he said. "Now we have what we feel is just a totally killer tour and a lot of variety and we're hitting up a lot of markets that we didn't hit on (the) Uproar (tour) and we're getting to places that don't get the most shows."

The tour stops on Saturday (January 22) in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The latest single from "Nightmare", which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart last summer, is "Welcome To The Family".

Avenged Sevenfold is taking over the hard rock world.

They swept every category of the Golden God Awards, played It's So Easy with Duff, Mouth For War with Vinnie Paul. have a sold out arena tour, and "Nightmare" debuted number 1 on billboard and  is on its way to going platinum.  They are the most important hard rock band on the planet right now...Sebastian Bach knows whats up>>>

Avenged Sevenfold is letting the fans choose their whole set list for this summers Rockstar Uproar tour which they are headlining.  A7X has been around for 12 years and has 6 albums out so the fans are really going deep in the catalog to pick out some rare tracks, its pretty awesome.  More bands should do this!  They have been on the "Nightmare" touring cycle for over a year and are looking to switch things up.  I'm going to 3 Uproar shows myself.. here is Avenged Sevenfolds statement:

Hey guys, we just finished up our first year of touring in support of "Nightmare".  We wanna thank you all for the overwhelming support worldwide and are excited to embark on the second half of the touring cycle.  We realize that playing UPROAR for a second year has some advantages and some disadvantages. We don't want people to feel they are seeing the same show as last year.  We are concerned that people may feel we are going to give them the same setlist, production, merch, etc. etc.  We have put our heads together to try and find a solution to these concerns.  Not only are we gonna do a brand new stage show with all new production, but we are going to let you decide what songs we are gonna play.

Here is how it's gonna work:

- Vote for the 10 Avenged Sevenfold songs that you want us to play on the UPROAR Tour.

- We will take the 20 songs with the most votes and rotate them in and out of the setlist every night.  We literally are not going to know what we are playing until just before the shows take place.  This way some people will see songs they never thought they would hear live and others will hear an entirely different set of songs.

We hope you have fun with this.

You only get one chance to vote so think hard about your choices...

We are counting on you to choose the right songs!

Love A7X

?We?re Going To Be Doing Something No Other Band Has Ever Done,? M Shadows Tells Kerrang!

Frontman M Shadows has told Kerrang! that the band are set for a break? to write their new record!

?We?ll do this run of shows and then we?ll take some time off, ? M Shadows says of the bands forthcoming North American gigs which include a performance at Metallica?s Orion Festival. ?It won?t be like a hiatus ? we?re just going to slowly write the next record and then when we?re ready we?ll record it.?

?To tell you the truth, we have some very cool things in the works that I can?t talk about right now,? continues the singer. ?We?re going to be doing something that no other band has ever done. The fans will be very happy!?

All of this, of course, means the band will be hidden away from public view for a while ? and M Shadows says it could be a year before the band are back in the UK.

?This is our time to get back into Avenged Sevenfold, and I?m sure by next summer it?ll all be going again,? he explains. ?We?ll probably come over to the UK and the first thing we do will be festivals. Last years tour and Download were so amazing, we decided to leave it at that. But we?ll come back with the new record and make it really special!?

thought I made a post in here before.... hmm.

A7X just announced they will be closing out Musikfest here in Bethlehem, PA on August 11th.

Avenged Sevenfold will close out Musikfest in Bethlehem, ArtsQuest announced today.

The metal rockers are scheduled to perform 7 p.m. Aug.  11, the last day of the festival, on the Sands Steel Stage.

Tickets cost $49 and $59.

Formed in 1999, Avenged Sevenfold gained mainstream popularity in the mid-2000s with songs such as "Afterlife" and and the "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" inspired song "Bat Country."

After the death of their drummer,  James "The Rev" Sullivan, in 2009,  the group considered disbanding, but instead carried on, releasing the "Nightmare" album in 2010. Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy carried on as Avenged Sevenfold's drummer.

With five studio albums to date, Avenged Sevenfold has continued to play on packaged tours and festivals including Metallica's Orion Festival last summer.

For more information on the band's headlining date in Bethlehem, visit musikfest.org.

Hail To The King is awesome, the band has matured into a streamlined killer metal groove.
It reminds of Black album era Metallica, and the production sounds huge too. Best sound mix this band has gotten to date. Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!

Since there hasnt been much talk on a7x. just thought id throw out there. they are currently number 32 on the billboard 200. They've been on the charts for 9 weeks now. they debuted on the charts at number 1. so far the album is doing very well & the tour has been very successful. if you havent gotten a chance to hear hail to the king. give it a few spins, the band you thought you may have disliked, you just might think a lil differently about them now. this is by far their most "metal" album to date. the music is slow down, but the progression has not. this band tends to accomplish something different on every release,  & this is by far no different.so with all that said. i was wondering what everyones thoughts were on hail to the king?
