It's an excellent and highly promising debut and i am delighted i finally have it - think ac/dc meets aerosmith and u have their sound - of course it's fair to say they ain't exactly bringing anything new, their doing what others did over 25 years ago - but they are the most promising thing out there.

I heard Aint Coming Home and I loved it  yes  They do have an Aerosmith vibe to them which is cool.  Like you said, it aint exactly new, but they have attitude and a great sound.  When you said Lafty sounds like Hanson, I was expecting a much higher pitched voice  hihi

Lol - there are a few times on the album when he does, esp the first song.

here's a cool article from mtv.com. great to see these guys are getting national exposure.

Silvertide Go A Few Rounds With Van Halen, Aerosmith Before 'Comin' Home'
12.03.2004 6:00 AM EST

Young band has an old-school take on rock's message and the songwriting process.

Few music careers begin as dramatically as that of Philadelphia's bluesy hard rockers Silvertide. By the end of the band's first gig in February 2001, police had raided the club where they were playing and arrested dozens of crowd members for

"We want [people] to forget about their problems, drink a few beers and just rock out." ? Silvertide's Walt Lafty underage drinking and drug possession. Frontman Walt Lafty was almost hauled off as well.

"I had given a bunch of equipment to my friends so they could sneak out the back and say they were carrying gear," he explained. "Then I noticed all the gear was gone and I wasn't out yet. So when I tried leaving, this black female cop goes, 'Why should I let you out of here? You look like you're 12 years old.' I was drunk out of my mind, and I had to sing an Al Green song to her to prove I was in the band."

The event set the tone for the gritty, good-time outfit, whose music blends the swagger of the Black Crowes, the stomp of Led Zeppelin and the trashy flash of Aerosmith. Other contemporary bands may sing about bruising relationships and other ego-shattering trauma, but Silvertide prefer the get-your-rocks-off and party-till-you puke ethos of bands like M?tley Cr?e.

"We're not interested in singing about being depressed and taking on the anger of the world," Lafty said. "People deal with that stuff enough in their lives. We want them to forget about their problems, drink a few beers and just rock out."

Silvertide's debut album, Show and Tell, is an overflowing keg of high-testosterone vocals, heavy-groove guitars and flailing beats that recalls the height of '80s rock debauchery. Such a sound is common for musicians in their 30s and 40s who grew up with Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses, but it's odd coming from a bunch of kids in their early 20s. "We're don't really relate to a lot of the stuff on the radio," Lafty said. "We prefer the great music from the past, but not the Black Crowes. A lot of people compare us to them because my voice sounds a lot like Chris Robinson's, but none of us even owned a Black Crowes record growing up."

Despite their non-conformity with the marketplace, Silvertide are connecting strongly with rock fans. Audiences greeted them warmly on tours with Aerosmith, Van Halen and Shinedown, and their boisterous debut single, "Ain't Comin' Home," has been near the top of radio charts for weeks. The track addresses the Spinal Tap edict: "Have a good time all the time."

"It's about realizing that God gave us the bone and the body to be able to have fun," Lafty elaborated. "You can live through a lot, and your body can take a lot of abuse. So, instead of whining and bitching about going to work and trying to always work towards going to college, kick back once in a while and let loose."

While "Ain't Comin' Home" has clearly kick-started Silvertide's career, the song originally wasn't slated for Show & Tell. The band wrote it three years ago and considered it dated. However, since the group liked playing it live, it decided to throw it on the disc. "We realized there was no reason to be ashamed of it just because it's something we wrote early on," Lafty said. "So we added it at the last minute, and weirdly, it's the one everyone latched on to."

Lafty started writing songs for Show & Tell when he was in high school, and finished many of them during his long shifts working as the janitor for a chain of health clubs. After Silvertide were signed in 2002, they finished the songs at a band house they rented in Los Angeles, then recorded the album with Oliver Leiber at various studios in L.A., New York and Philadelphia. Then the group hit the road hard. While Show & Tell was in the can well over a year before its June release, Lafty said the long wait was actually beneficial.

"It gave us a chance to really fine-tune the songs on the road," Lafty said. "We have played with a lot of bands that have new records that have just come out, and they haven't been on the road at all. I'm not gonna mention names, but they suck because they haven't had the experience."

Silvertide will remain on the road through December 18 with Shinedown before going out with Saliva. Much of next year will also be spent living out of suitcases ? which doesn't mean there won't be new material. Before they headed out with Shinedown, Silvertide spent a week in the studio working on new songs, and Lafty said they will continue writing on their bus.

"Having a ton of material is the key to making a great record," he explained. "A lot of new bands just write two good songs and then put them out with eight other songs they've just thrown together. We've learned from a lot of the great older bands that would tour their asses off and write constantly. Then when it came time to do the record, they had a wide array of things to chose from, so they could narrow it down and pick the best."

I converted a friend into a Silvertide fan, and he saw them at The Roxy recently.  He said he had a great time. Then I came across this review in LA Weekly:

Loose and boozy metal is about as unfashionable as Axl Rose's old headscarves right now, but dont tell that to Philly's Silvertide.  Primed to be Clive Davis' rock & roll redeemers, the young fellas had a somewhat sparse crowd to mug and chug for when they took the Roxy stage, but they weren't about to abandon the arena-size audacity that got 'em signed in the first place.

Guitarist Nick Perri (wearer of said hair acouterment) definitely knows how to fondle a guitar, and he pulled off his Angus Young spasms, both physically and sonically, with impressive precision, even if his overzealousness seemed like attention-whoring at times.  Perhaps if singer Walt Lafty had a more powerful presence....but the waify crooner's Chris Robinson-ish vox were too often drowned in the maelstrom of ricocheting riffs and bass lines spewed by his bandmates- a departure from their Oliver Leiber-produced J records debut which boasted a bluesier, vocal driven mix.  Still, Lafty did attempt to make his own impression with a ballsy stunt that a more seasoned performer would never dare attempt (even on the intentionally over-the-top Metal Skool night, which this wasn't).  Ambling sweaty and shirtless through the crowd, he commanded everyone to get down - yes, all the way down on their knees for a sing-along.  Demanding such subservience from an L.A. crowd...well, its rock & roll suicide.

Or so you'd think.  But just as we cringed for the inevitable awkward lack of response, bodies started to fall to floor.  Wavelike, the room was transformed into a not-so-mellow love-in, as awed kneelers began chanting along aggressively to the band's midtempo closing anthem about, yup, good ol' Cali.  Guess youthful ignorance is bliss when you're living in Paradise City.

LA reviewers can be a bitch sometimes...  but I am looking forward to hearing more from them.

mary jane is probably my favorite tune. it just rocks and sounds even better live.

i saw them two nights ago at the electric factory in philly. another great show.

but they played a month ago in philly (WMMR spring break concert with billy idol). it was incredible. Dee Snider was the "host", so he introduced the bands and talked a little between sets.

but the highlight of the night was when dee snider comes out on stage with silvertide, and they rip into Communication Breakdown. the place went nuts. i could not believe how good dee sounded. he sounded perfect. and silvertide rocked it out. it was awesome.

i saw Silvertide perform at a small club in Philly last night (grape street pub - about 200 people). they played 7 new songs. every one was fucking awesome!!!

some of the new songs are a little heavier, and a little more raw. basically, they sound more influenced by GnR.  ok

hopefully the finished versions sound as good. from what i heard, their second album could blow the first away. honestly, 3 or 4 of the songs are as good or better than anything they've released.

they closed the show with a VERY extended version of ain't coming home, and in the middle they went into "head like a hole". it rocked!!

anyone know when their new album is coming out?

i asked nick perry (lead guitar) and he said there's no definitive timetable right now, but that a fall release is likely.

they hope to be back on tour in the summer.

here's an AWESOME interview with Walt.

http://rocknrolluniverse.com/rocknrolluniverse_404.htm

he says he doesn't like "better" by GnR, but his dad loves it. hopefully that doesn't hurt their chances of opening for Gnr. hihi

Cool find Sandman, thanks.  Yeah I don't really see Walt's style liking Better, it's a little too 'structured' (don't really know what i am even meaning by that) for a free flowing rock frontman like Walt.

Can't wait to see what Nick and Mark have wrote guitar wise, I read somewhere where Nick has really gotten into songwriting.

This band has got the shittiest updating of its website besides gnr and its message board is horrible.  I tried asking some questions in there and nobody responds, it's basically a board for people from Philly to talk about upcoming gigs and "if you like Silvertide you'll love this band".  So it's cool to get information here.

I wonder what kind of direction they are going to go with the next album.  I'm a little skeptical of "heavy" if it's music wise or lyric wise.  I guess out of all their songs the only one I'm not a big fan of is Adult Child and that kind of has that darker heavy feel to it for me.

I still watch their live video of ACH on aol.com about once a week, they are just incredible live.

P.S., does anyone know of or have any live recordings of this band?  thanks in advance!

DN - i have not heard of any live recordings. which is crazy cause i've seen them about 20-30 times. i agree - they are an incredible live band.

i think they really need to showcase nick on the new album. he's the strength of the band IMO.

the new songs i heard sounded awesome. one song reminded me of "alive" by PJ. and another had an awesome riff that was repeated throughout much of the song....sort of reminded me of "back in black".

That sounds sweet about their new stuff, i'm fucking pumped now.  I agree 100% that Nick is the heart of the band and they should showcase him more.  I got a Nothing Stays version off the net (presumably from an earlier EP of theirs) and it has got all these crazy guitar fills and holds throughout the verses, and then on the album version they went and eliminated all his fills.

I wish I was from the Philly area, they've only been to the upper midwest twice back in 2004 and everytime last year that the headliner of their tour would come around Silvertide wouldn't be included on the bill (Alterbridge, Crue).  Maybe I'll just have to fly out east for a show like I'm doing with GNR.
