Title: your say on INTERNET dating
Post by: Gunna_girl01 on May 15, 2006, 01:02:36 AM
What do you think about internet dating?

is it fake, stupid, or even imaginary?

does it turn you on, or make you sick?

can you ever be sure that your not talking to a one eyed, fungy infested, one legged hermit ( apologies if this describes you )

Your opinion ????
Please post

If it's done safely, it's a great way to meet people.

I'd prefer the old fashioned way though myself.

My brother met his gf that way. One tiny little problem though: she lives 250 k away.....  :-[ I never dated anybody through the net, but it seems to work for others. My best friend once went to A'dam to meet some guy she met on the net. He turned out to be quite a nice guy (after me warning her about serial killers using email to lure girls). Didn't start going out with him though, he was too far away.

What do you think about internet dating?

I don't think it's that different from any other form of meeting someone. It may even be better getting know someone on the net, because you're able to see more of their ideas, interests and beliefs, etc... on various topics. As in real life, people tend to have that halo effect when you first meet them. You both sort of walk on eggshells as not to offend the other. People seem to be more uninhibited on the internet.

Internet dating sites were never my type. It just seems too forced, in my opinion. I think it's best when it happens on accident as it did with my relationship.

It works fine, if you just act wisely.. 'Cause many of these 15yo girls hangin' on chats are actually 45yo men :P Sad thing though. But I know alot of people who have met their partner online. That's cool IMO :peace:

or the 15 year old girl could be your daughter and it doesn't seem to stop some..

I believe in friendships over the net.

Love is as physical as it is intellectual, so two have to meet physically to say they even " like" each other for real.

For instance, smell is VERY important for me. Skin smell, not perfume.

It either turns me on, or it doesn't.

How the xxxx do i know on the net ?

You said absolutely everything.

Internet is cool to meet people with the same interests as you and all, but it's nothing like the old fashioned way.

Met my soon to be wife thanks to HereTodayGoneToHell and then yahoo messenger.

Internet is great as long as both people are honest.

INternet allows u to open up and not be insecure and shy.

If I had saw Journey out in public, I never wouldve had the courage to approach her and ask her out.

Thanks to this site and yahoo messenger, we were able to break the ice and slowly build a great relationship.

When we finally met it was nerve wracking but not weird or awkward at all. She was everything she said she was and more.

Hopefully I was the same.

Its worked out great almost 2 years running now.

So internet dating isnt taboo or weird or pathetic.

I believe u have to search wide and broad to find your soulmate and mine lived 220 miles away but it has been 100 percent worth it.

I'll tell you a story. I met my gf online, like 5 years ago. So we met IRL after couple of years --> started dating. Now we've been together for 2 years and nothing seems to stop us. We're fuckin' happy and that's all I really care about. I don't believe in love/dating through the internet, but it's a good way to meet interesting people. But yeah, to fall in love you need the physical "communication"..

I know alot of relationships that has started online and seem to never end. Welcome to the 2000's :peace: Maybe people are going to get married online in the near future :hihi: Hope not.

My say on internet dating...

The internet is a nice way to get to "know" people. It's a headstart when you get to see each other for the first time. You know what the person in front of you is about and you're not prejudiced on looks. Good looks aren't everything, though 80% of the bar/ disco-scene where you are supposed to meet somebody seems to rely on it. But in the end, you have to live with someones character. Go figure :).

Met my gf at a site for catholics. Catholics are hard to find in the city where I live but I wanted to stay in touch with my beliefs. Hang out with people who have the same beliefs. My gf and I seemed to like each other more than average and took the big plunge. Never regretted it, never will.

Search and you won't find. Let it happen.. and it happens :).

I met my current fiance through http://hotornot.com

We met in July and got engaged in March, we'll be married without 10 months.

I think it's a great way to go.

Well I wouldn't do it, but I think everyone is a serial killer.

I have a friend who met someone through eHarmony and so far its going well, but they've only been together about 10 months so who knows.  Anyway, I hope it works out for her because her biological clock is ticking so loud I can hear it from my house.

It seems like when she was looking, she got more serious responses from the pay sites rather than free ones.

I never done it but it can be an easy way to meet someone with similar interests in your area. I don't get dating someone halfway across the world, though.

It's like hate, sometimes, you want to hate someone and when you meet, it's love at first sight.

I think that the internet is a great way to connect (no pun intended :)) and meet new friends, or love interests.

Two years ago, I actually placed a personal ad on the internet.  I was just sick of the club scene and being set up by friends.  It just was not working for me at all.

A few months later, a wonderful person emailed me, and we exchanged three emails.  We dated for one year, and were married this past December :)

Although one might click online, I definitely believe one should take it to an off line level as soon as possible.

I am sure glad that I am.  We'll be celebrating our fifth month wedding anniversary next week.  Awww... how romantic :)  Hehe.

Thanks journey... and congrats to you as well for finding someone special via the internet route as well :)  Some members of my family tell me to keep in a secret, with regards how we met.  But you know what, who cares?  What difference does it really make in the long run?

We actually saw VR in Miami Florida on New Year's during our honeymoon.  Hehe.  My guy knows what I like! :)

I can't believe that poster above met their partner on hotornot!

In the old ICQ days I met a girl, travelled up to Brisbane straight out of high school to meet! She was hot! 6 years later we are still friends and chat quite a bit and will meet up as friends next time I go up or vice versa.

I've met other girls off the net as well, but the one I just mentioned was the most memorable in terms of love.

I think it is really cool and unique to really connect over the net without that physical judgement etc.

The only issue I have, is that I tend to really fall head over heals initially and think I'm really in love etc. but I just get caught up in the whole infactuation thing. I'd really like to get to know the girl that I'm going to settle down with, gradually, and get to know them slowly and fall in love with them through spending time with them. I think with the internet, you meet someone you have already fallen for and really miss that part. Although it might work for other people.

Since being single I have been chatting to one or two ladies and I certainly would do it again, just try and take it nice and slowly. It's really cool to click with someone and have those long chats that seem to last forever when you really find someone that's on your wavelength.

i felt in love for the first time with someone i knew on msn ( well, in a forum, then we contacted through msn)  :P after 9 moths chating everyday with no pics no phone calls,  all the chat made me fall in love, then we met at a concert and it was like love at first sight and at the same time like we knew for ages. well, we lasted 1 oner and 7 months and the relationship ended sadly because of me.  well, life goes on. i think i got lucky to meet such a person, i still have contact with him and i still love him, despite of age and distance we bet for our relationship to work and it was all about love  :) it was beautiful while it lasted.

but i know some people don't have the same luck as me, i've heard horrible stories  :-\

They started talking online about a year ago, and met face to face about 10 months ago.  But she was seriously desperate to get married and have kids...she's getting to be almost too old.  So it did help her to meet someone who was agreeable to that timeframe.

I tried it a couple times. Most of the time when i met the chicks in person though... there was a fatal flaw they hadn't told me about i.e the pic they send was from five years and 30 pounds ago. Or they were just freaky.

But I did meet one of my good female friends online... we probably would have dated but she lived in another city and I started dating a girl i met in 'real life' ...  but we are still friends though. so you can meet cool people... you just have to be wary of liars.

Yeah I tried it twice and the first time, the chick was a total monster....the pic she sent me wasn't even her, so I just walked away and left here where I met her.  The second time was okay, the girl and I went to the movies a few times and we really didnt' have a lot in common, but we ended up becomming good friends for a little bit.  So yeah definitely hit or miss.  My comment is MAKE SURE THEY HAVE A REAL TIME WEBCAM SHOW for you so you really know it's them.  I mean I'm not THAT shallow, but when I supposedly meet someone who posts this nice pic of them (it wasn't like one of those model chicks where you KNOW it's fake) but this girl looked sweet.......I ended up meeting her and she was really nasty looking.  She recognized me and called out my name and i'm like you can't be Trish.and she's like oh yeah that was my friends pic I put up because I didn't have a camera yet.......so I just was like well I'm sorry, but I'm not interested.
But as for that.....i only tried it twice and that's that.  Myspace is only for contacting old friends now!  No more internet dating for me.

it's funny though...

i think some of you are pretty harsh..

if you meet someone who lookeD good and who got fat, at least you know they only have to lose kilos to be back to being attractive ( and who hasn't put weight on once ?)

It's not like you met someone who had no particular physical attractiveness, is it ?

I haven't put on weight or fat even once  :)

And I must say I feel sorry for those people who's companion has put on weight and don't have the will to lose it.

And for that last remark, I must  confess that I've met a few of those, too.

I feel sad for people who like myself have always had weight problems due to medication ( i was on depakin at the age of 10)

I was quite ok 2 years ago ( but then, i was very happy, so weight + hapiness = loss=)

Now, i have a LOT to lose due to my pregnancy and as i am still breastfeeding Gabriel, i can't go on a strict diet ( not allowed). Right now, i looked tied, daunted, stressed out and big.

In 6 months, it'll be different.

Imagine someone sees you and judges there and then ? That's bad i think.

Because it doesn't take much to go back to being pretty ..

Goes to show that the interest is only sexual then, isn't it ?

If someone can't go past the first look and imagine you can look a whole lot different...

Still, if someone puts a picture of their friend (or a total stranger) online then shows up looking completely different I think the person they're meeting has every right to walk away.? Really, they should've been expecting that reaction when they put the faux picture up.? It's deliberately misleading, right?? A date-trap.

I don't think there's the stigma that was onces attatched to it anymore.  It's perfectly fine.  Aslong as you're careful and wise and speak for a good while before meeting. If it's going to be something worth doing (meeting up) then being patient is a good way of seeing how the other person reacts to that.  And make sure you speak on cam a few times to make sure the picture is that person lol.

And be realistic... it's great when you meet someone that you automaticly click with and can talk to all night. But if you're living far away from each other and you don't have any money to see each other regular, then my advice would be to just stay good chatty friends. Because it can hurt if good intentions don't manage to come true.  But if it's all good and you want it to happen and your enjoying each others company, don't worry whatanyone else thinks, it's your life  ;-)

Yes, totally.

I don't understand why somebody would put up a fake pic and still intend on meeting the person they lured online. They are going to see that you lied to them from the start. The first thing you did was lie to somebody........nice way to kick off a new friendship/relationship.  ::)

From a recent french survey, almost half of the online daters lied about themselves.

They have also found out " married/concubined"men were more likely to put fake photos ( and i don't care if idiots say i don't like men, it'(s not me saying, it's surveys)

They also said that the main reason people try to "date" was quick sex.

Exactly.....I was already standoffish about doing the date in the first place, and to be lied to immediately was a huge shock.  I mean sure she was a monster, but even all shallowness aside......that's a fucking big no no first off......oh sweet nice to meet you, nice way to steal an idenity first time I meet you!  Maybe the chick was gonna rape me or something (lord knows she could have overpowered me) I dont' know.....but needless to say, what a shitty thing to do.   Fuck first off why would I lie to meet someone online in the first place....just something I wanted to try out and she initiated conversation first (yes much like Captain Howdy) and thank god i was like hey let's meet in a public place.  The Billster might not be around today at all spreading his love!  back to meeting chicks in bars :peace:

I dont have anything against heavy girls, but if a chick posts a pic of her being thin and u meet them and they are HUGE, its matter of trust.

If they are gonna lie about that, what else are they lying about?

Like SLC said, U cant start something off with a lie like that.

Blue Cut, this chick was a double bagger.........

the kind where u put a bag on her head and also a bag on your own head just in case her's falls off! :hihi:

What does a person like that think you would do? Just forgive them like it was no big deal? What kind of person would that make you? (Besides stupid)

Ya know!??

What are these people thinking?

I'm pretty sure if they're bad enough off to commit idenity theft......then like D said, they're probably a double bagger.  If they're bad enough in that situation to have to meet lovers in a situation like that, then odds are they're playing with a Pinochle deck.
But then again did you guys ever see that Tyra Banks show.  She got all fixed up in a fat suit and met guys on a blind date and they all shrugged her off.  In a sense I wouldn't think that that's something to go do and prove for your show, fuck we already know people are very picky about that stuff.

Dead on. And I'll carry a gun just in case, too.

But there was once this girl I'd thought I'd bang since she looke damn nice, but I didn't like her personality. Anyways when I met her she was some fat annoying girl.

Fortunately I had a date next day, too, so I drove her to train station and picked up the new girl, lol the look on her face.

The new girl, she looked damn nice.

I'd prefer the old fashioned way though myself.

The great thing about technology is that things change. The "old fashioned way" in the 19th century was  marrying your neighbor. Technology = new  opportunities=change, and change is good (for the most  part). The fact is, with people  so busy and stressed for time, the internet  can be an  efficient  and effective  way to meet people.

I would say that paying a few bucks  to a professional site  to act as a "filter" is worth the money because it saves you time, and ultimately, money, as you don't waste bucks  on lunches and dinners  with people  you have no  interest in pursuing a relationship.

The best  way is a connection through a  mutual friend, but today,  that does  not always work, so internet  dating can be  effective, but the  free sites are caveat emptor.

i think the internet is a good way to make and meet friends too, i mean im fully prego and not working, my parnter works an hour away from where we live.. it's hard to make friends off the street u no... all my friends are yobbo's and not the type of ppl i want my child to be brought up around...they dont have very good morals and shit like that. i mean hell yea i was a hella big party girl but it aint apart of my life anymore... so no offence to yobbo's, i used to be one ....

Nothing wrong with it. I gave it a try in 2000 when it was still fairly new. Tried it on & off and then 2 years later I met my future wife on Yahoo Personals.  So it worked great for me.

What led me to try it was that I got tired of the bar scene and was finding it harder to meet people who were on the same page as I was at when I was approaching my late 20's & becoming more responsible.
